Product Description

Although he is an international superstar, Sean Connery still knows the city of Edinburgh practically street by street from delivering the morning milk as a schoolboy. In this vivid and highly personal portrait of Scotland and its achievements, Connery shines a light upon both his own upbringing an the successes and failures of Scotland's long and storied history. Along the way, he strives to answer the trickiest of questions, including How did Scots devise so many new sports and games? What gave fire to the Gothic tendency in Scottish literature? Why have so many creatively inventive and influential architects been Scots? Where did Scotland's unreal blend of psychotic humor originate? and What about the national tradition of self-deprecation sometimes called the Scottish cringe? While revealing as never before his own vibrant personal history, Connery offers a correction to common misconceptions surrounding Scottish history and offers an intimate, insider's view of the true nature of Scotland.

2-0 out of 5 stars On not being an autobiography
Originally Connery meant to do an autobiography ,but upon finding out that if he did his ex-wife Diane Cilento was going to go public with allegations that he beat her during their marriage. So, instead, you get this boring tome. Not long after being released in the UK it was remaindered.I love Connery as Bond but, as books go, Moore's MY WORD IS MY BOND is a better read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Being A Scot
What a delight it was to receive my long awaited copy of "Being A Scot".
Sean did an excellent job of relating the history of his country, all the work he puts into keeping the arts alive and well in Scotland, and so much of his own personal history.I found it fascinating! And the personal photograghs!!And other artwork! Now I want to visit there more than ever before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Being a Scot
This was a gift for my husband who loves the book.He is summarizing parts of it for me as he reads it.It is fun to hear about parts of Scotland which we have visited. It is also good to feel the pride Sean Connery has for being a Scot.
I was happy that the book was finally available since I heard about it after the book fair in Edinburgh in August, 2008. ... Read more

Product Description

From humble beginnings as a milkman and coffin-polisher to one of the world’s biggest box-office names, Sean Connery is one of Hollywood’s all-time greatest success stories. The star of nearly 80 films, Connery is perhaps still best known for his seven performances as James Bond. Indeed, for many movie fans Connery’s 007 is unsurpassed to this day. But how did this working-class Scot come to embody the quintessentially English agent? This definitive biography reveals Connery’s early successes and failures—both personal and professional—and looks at the little-known life behind the cameras. Frank and thorough, this is a complete look at the film world’s classic charismatic hard man.

5-0 out of 5 stars The REAL James Bond
I have always enjoyed reading biographies and this one is just as interesting as all the others. It not only tells about Sean from being a baby through adult life with his marriages and children. It also tells of all the movies and plays he was in and the amount of money each earned. Many of his movies I never heard of and now I want to see how he was in them. Sean devised a way to save money from not only the US IRS, but from Englands' tax agency over the years after losing much of what he had saved and also trusting one person with his money. He is living very comfortably now in his older years and is still working.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for behind the scenes
Just finished the book this morning.Should have waited for a more recent book, that included his most recent movies.Easy read, with interesting thoughts from his co-stars and friends (and not so good friends).I have new respect for this person, and not just what he does on the screen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unveiling a Very Private Man!
The life of Sean Connery, arguably the most popular movie star of the past 40 years and everyone's favorite James Bond, is examined in this updated edition of a book first published in 1983. It is the best biography of Connery this reviewer has come across.

Callan does a marvelous job of revealing this gifted actor and most private of men. Talking with many of Connery's friends and movie business associates along with quotes from Connery himself, he has fashioned a comprehensive account of the born-into-poverty Thomas Connery who became a screen legend as James Bond.

Tiring of the 007 hype and worried of being typecast, Connery broke away to chart his own, iconoclastic career in movies. His subsequent track record was mixed: Marnie, The Hill, Zardoz, Time Bandits, The Man Who Would be King, The Wind and The Lion, Medicine Man, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc. but whatever the movie, Connery was always eminently watchable.

Connery marched to the sound of his own drummer and, as revealed in this book, was always quite ready to speak his mind or take legal action. In most ways, he was as fascinating a person off the screen as he was on.

Sean Connery fans will want this book. In 286 fast-paced pages, Michael Callan gives us a multi-dimensional portrait of one fascinating human being. ... Read more

Product Description

Sean Connery is one of the world’s true superstars, applauded by critics and filmgoers alike. Now, John Parker traces the rise to stardom of the tough Edinburgh street kid, who left school at the age of 13. Arriving in London with gold teeth and tattoos to seek his fortune in the meat market of bodybuilding, Connery fought against snobbery to become a self-taught Shakespearean actor. Then came the big break. Auditioning for the part of James Bond, he told producers with typical bluntness how Bond should be played, and it landed him the job—and overnight stardom. Connery went on to become one of the world’s most versatile, highly paid actors, winning an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables. Here, John Parker offers an engaging portrait of one of the most glamorous, talented, and complex actors in movie history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sir Sean (Tommy) Connery A Noble Scot
A special man with a long career in the movies. This book is informative, but the reality he was type-casted as James Bond and never could destroy the monster he created.
The author should have spent more time with a history of growing up in Scotland with a hard knox life of growing up without the opportunities that were not available when growing up.
This man of great character makes us want to be better people in the world at large to be productive individuals with grit... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just fine

Sean Connery, a biography by Michael Freedland. Picked up this biography becase I like Sean Connery as an actor. I wanted to know what he did differently to be where he is.

I did get to know a lot many details about Sean Connery. I did, however, have to find on the Internet some more details I was interested in. What I did get to know is that Sean stood up for most of his beliefs, no matter what.

2.5/5

1-0 out of 5 stars Boy, Don't Read This One
In my opinion, this book was terrible. Freedland does not give a clear picture of Connery's life or ideas. He pictures his life to be free of hardship and very glamorous, but anyone might be able to tell you of thehorrors that come with fame. The author skips around so much that thereader is at a loss as to what he is trying to portray. The details are tooprecise and B-O-R-I-N-G!If you want to get in a good nap, please feelfree to view this work, but if you are busy and don't have time to be boredwith details, stay away. ... Product Description

Why is the only non-American winner of the AFI's prestigious Life Achievement Award a Scotsman? Perhaps because Sean Connery's career, though international in scope and global in appeal, made him a "genuine movie star" without any pretensions or pandering to fashion. Indisputably, Connery's incarnation of James Bond catapulted him to stardom and lay the foundation for the most successful franchise in motion picture history. Together Bond and Connery became larger-than-life; but it was Connery, not Bond, whose powerful presence went on to permeate scores of other roles. Connery can be as cool and charismatic as Steve McQueen, as elegant as Cary Grant, or as generous as Frank Sinatra. Said Audrey Hepburn: "There are only two great stars in my recollection who have not been changed by massive success: Lassie and Sean Connery."
