Product Description
Given the militarism of the Empire and Nazi Germany, why did postwar West Germany experience massive waves of peace protest in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1980s? How have postwar peace movements shaped German political culture? Will the cultural norms that frown on the use of military force constrain foreign policy in the new, unified, Germany? In Paradoxes of Peace, Alice Holmes Cooper traces the evolution of peace movements in West Germany (1945-90) and in united Germany since 1990. Cooper examines the domestic and international constellations that gave rise to the peace movements, the sources of their multi-faceted ideologies and participants, and their organizational structures and strategies. The author then investigates the peace movement's response to the challenges of the post-Cold War world.
Whereas previous work on German peace movements has concentrated on one period of mobilization or on elite security-policy debates, this comprehensive study examines all phases of mobilization since 1945, taking into account the full spectrum of actors, movement organization and strategy, and the broad political, social, and economic environments spawning peace protest. Arguing that theories of resource mobilization, changes in values, and crises of modernity are insufficient to explain peace movements, Paradoxes of Peace tailors a "political process" approach to postwar German movements. It investigates the political opportunities--the changing domestic and international constellation--which most favored peace mobilization since 1945. It examines the process through which the peace movement transformed popular consciousness and created a peace constituency. It analyzes how German peace movements gradually built an indispensable organizational infrastructure autonomous from parties and other social institutions. Cooper argues that the convergence of these factors determined the movement's capacity to mobilize and have political impact and allowed these to grow over time.
Alice Holmes Cooper is Assistant Professor of Government, University of Virginia.

Product Description
Nine Great Questions About 9 Iconic Alice Cooper Album Packages. Ernie Cefalu takes the time to answer YOUR questions about some of the most important Alice Cooper albums of his career.

The story is a series of nine questions and answers. It's a quick read for the Ultimate Alice Cooper Fan who wants to know even more then before!!

Question:
Do you remember with each album who had the original basic idea for the art design and packaging? It seems to me there would have been a lot of cooks involved in that particular soup eg the band (some of whom had an art background), management, as well as the record company.

Answer: (Ernie Cefalu)
First Of all, we only did a few album covers that were originated by the record companies. I would safely say that out of the 209 album covers I have done to date, less than 6 were done for the labels. We were always able to create totally without a label or its art department having any input. Record companies internal art departments were always our constant competitor as well as our harshest critics.

Pacific Eye & Ear was responsible for 9 Alice Cooper album packages from “Schools Out” through “Raise Your Fist And Yell”. As the Pacific Eye & Ear Creative Director, my job was to initiate the preliminary thinking, rough design layouts and, in my case, all the “Custom Packaging”. For Alice, that was the “School’s Out,” “Billion Dollar Babies” and “Muscle Of Love” albums custom packaging and lettering/logos needed for “all” projects (music or corporate) that went through the art department. Once that was completed I would call a meeting in the art department where we would share both input from the client and my initial thinking as well.

I had assembled a young unheard of team of in-house illustrators starting with Joe Garnett, Drew Struzan, Bill Garland, Joe Pategno, Ingrid Heanke (who each went on to become world class artists). As a group, would spend at least a few hour’s “brain storming” and building on the original “starter ideas” that were in place.

Maybe we would end up in a different place, maybe not, but for sure we would always end up in a better place! Once we agreed that the concept was tight enough and in a great place, it was up to me to decide which illustrator or photographer would get the final “nod” on the finish.

As for input from the artist, band and or management, it was always about the same: rough track’s sometimes an album title, usually the single’s title, and my “discussion brief” with them explaining exactly what they were trying to message to their fans through their music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alce Cooper's Album Covers
As a big Alice Cooper fan I always wondered who did all his crazy album covers? Now after reading Mr. Cefalu's accounting of his tenor with "The Coop's" covers... I know who. Thank you for this in depth look behind the scenes of what I consider to be some of the most iconic covers ever done, by two of the most creative artists of our time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nine Iconic Alice Cooper Covers
I am the ultimate "Alice Cooper" fan and after reading this great story I am the ultimate "Ernie Cefalu" fan as well! Every one of my favorite album covers for Alice were done by Ernie and Pacific Eye & Ear. I have always felt that Alice's covers were way ahead of there time and now I know so much more about why!

Now I better understand what goes into making a successful cover, a cover that reflects not only the music but the artist as well. Just like a conductor Ernie conceived and directed these visual masterpices utlizing increadable artistic talent like Drew Struzanh, Bill Garland and others. An artist himself Ernie's lettering for Alice covers and some of the other 209 covers that he has designed is outstanding.

I will now go back and purchase all 7 stories because you, Ernie have caught my interest. Thank you for the great education and I am looking forward to all you're future installments.

5-0 out of 5 stars DELICIOUSLY SCARY!
This whole cd is very scary, but I especially love Bill Mumy's story "The Black '59." He reads this story in a way that only Bill can! I also got the book "Comic Prose" and read it before I heard Bill's interpretation. Good read and good listen! I love Bill reading on audio because he puts such enthusiasm into each sentence making you really get drawn into the storyline. No one can read an audio reading like Bill can! This cd is a must! It is deliciously scary, indeed! I like to pull it out and listen to it during thunder storms when the power is out. HAHAHA! Now, that's a good time...a real good time!

4-0 out of 5 stars There is Always an Empty Seat on the Whammy Bar Express to the Downstairs Eternal...
"Shock Rock" defied expectations as a surprisingly above-average collection. Nonetheless, several of these tales belong in the accursed hellhole of the bargain bin: "Voodoo Child" by Graham Masterson is uneventful; "You Know they Got a Hell of a Band" by Stephen King is deadly dull; the colloboration between Billy Mummy and Peter David, "The Black '59", is unimaginative. The largest disappointment is John Byrne's "Hide in Plain Sight", an amateurish sex romp with an obvious conclusion that reads like it was written by a 14-year-old boy with a hard-on. JOHN BYRNE!! THE GUY WHO DREW THE FANTASTIC FOUR--SUPERMAN--X MEN!! WHAT THE HECKFIRE, BYRNIE!?! The last two tales in the collection, "Flaming Telepaths" and "Addicted to Love", are two great stories that bring down the curtain. "Bunky" is a caffeinated sugar-high that takes a couple reads to comprehend, but it is a worthy contribution. METALLICA DIED WITH CLIFF!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Scary but unimaginative
Good horror books on audio are hard to come by so when I came across this title I bought it right away. The stories in this collection are scary, and some will down right give you the creeps but as you listen on, you start to notice that each story is more or less like the last just altered a bit and given a new title.Simply put there are too many "the dead come back" stories in this anthology for my liking.Horror stories can be so much more. How about a Psycho or haunted song or haunted music store even.there was none of that. There were a lot of dead rockers coming back to kill or avenge and again some of the stories were truly frightening. My rating is actually 3.5 stars but it would have easily gotten 5 if there was more variety to it.It is read by various readers including Joan Jett which in my personal opinion should stick to singing. Her flat delivery does nothing for me.I'm glad the stories weren't sugar coated and that there were swear words abound.Drugs and sex of course were mentioned often though all were heterocentric, more variety there would have been nice as well.Overall, a good audio production I would recommended and it does come with a bonus cassette filled with rock songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of rock n"roll and horror combined !
This is an excellent book combining the best of rock and horror fiction.See my review of Shock Rock 2, a continuation of this fine anthology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood n' Guts & Rock n' Roll
As a connoisseur of horror in general and horror fiction anthologies inspecific, I have to say that this collection is one of the finestavailable. The intro by the father of shock rock himself, Alice Cooper, gets the book off to a roaring start. The stories that follow do notdisappoint, ( a hallmark of editor Jeff Gelb's other anthology work), andmakes this a must have for anyone who enjoys rock n' roll, and horror. Mr.Gelb, a second volume please? ... Read more

Speed across the pond was awesome, far quicker than expected. Price not bad either (OK, price very good, only the shipping added quite a bit so not the seller's fault at all).
