Product Description
This book is a welcome overview of the involvement of mitochondria in cell death and disease, an extraordinarily active research area of major importance to both basic biology and medical science. Clear and thorough chapters present the current approaches leading research teams are taking to examine the role that mitochondria play in inducing the death of various cell types, including heart, brain, and liver cells.

The volume is comprehensive in that it examines apoptosis and necrosis from multiple levels and perspectives. As well as covering the genetic and biochemical basis of mitochondrial involvement in cell death, it details how mitochondrial dysfunction could result in various neurodegenerative, inflammatory, and ischemic diseases, and the aging process. Researchers and postgraduates throughout the biological and medical sciences--particularly those investigating the causes and potential treatments of cancers, septic shock, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease--will benefit from this book. ... Product Description

Open Sources 2.0 is a collection of insightful and thought-provoking essays from today's technology leaders that continues painting the evolutionary picture that developed in the 1999 book Open Sources: Voices from the Revolution .

These essays explore open source's impact on the software industry and reveal how open source concepts are infiltrating other areas of commerce and society. The essays appeal to a broad audience: the software developer will find thoughtful reflections on practices and methodology from leading open source developers like Jeremy Allison and Ben Laurie, while the business executive will find analyses of business strategies from the likes of Sleepycat co-founder and CEO Michael Olson and Open Source Business Conference founder Matt Asay.

From China, Europe, India, and Brazil we get essays that describe the developing world's efforts to join the technology forefront and use open source to take control of its high tech destiny. For anyone with a strong interest in technology trends, these essays are a must-read.

The enduring significance of open source goes well beyond high technology, however. At the heart of the new paradigm is network-enabled distributed collaboration: the growing impact of this model on all forms of online collaboration is fundamentally challenging our modern notion of community.

What does the future hold? Veteran open source commentators Tim O'Reilly and Doc Searls offer their perspectives, as do leading open source scholars Steven Weber and Sonali Shah. Andrew Hessel traces the migration of open source ideas from computer technology to biotechnology, and Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger and Slashdot co-founder Jeff Bates provide frontline views of functioning, flourishing online collaborative communities.

The power of collaboration, enabled by the internet and open source software, is changing the world in ways we can only begin to imagine.Open Sources 2.0 further develops the evolutionary picture that emerged in the original Open Sources and expounds on the transformative open source philosophy.

"This is a wonderful collection of thoughts and examples by great minds from the free software movement, and is a must have for anyone who follows free software development and project histories."

A 'must' for any interested in open source who would understand its ongoing evolution and potential.

4-0 out of 5 stars How OSS is changing the world as we know it...
Open Source Software (OSS) has radically redefined the landscape of the software industry and the Information Technology field. As much a mindset as a methodology, there are many elements of OSS that draw some of the deepest thinkers of our field. You can find some of those essays in the book Open Sources 2.0 - The Continuing Evolution, edited by Chris DiBona, Danese Cooper, and Mark Stone. There's a little something here for everyone...

As with all compilations from various writers and authors, it's not possible to have all the articles flow with the same voice and pace. And really, they shouldn't.You're looking to get a wide array of opinions and insights, not a blended mind dump from a single writer.Conversely, you'll find that some of the articles resonate with you, and others have you moving into scan mode to get to the next one.If you keep that in mind as you're working through the book, you'll get a lot more out of it.

For me, there were two areas that were enjoyable and valuable. The story of how Wikipedia went through growing pains and worked through rules and culture was interesting.Likewise, the story of Slashdot and how it got to what it is today is insightful.I still don't care for the site, but you can't argue it's effect in the technology world. The most thought-provoking essays for me revolved around the commoditization of software.Coupled with a different book I recently finished, I realize that certain software vendors are in a very precarious position, and they are following the same path that has led others to destruction as they attempt to hold on to what doesn't work any more. Those essays would have been worth the cost of the book alone to me...

If you're part of the OSS movement, or if you're trying to understand how it will affect your business, this is a good book to read and ponder...

5-0 out of 5 stars Interestingread on different facets of open source movement
This collection of essays on the open source movement could be called a second edition to the book "Open Sources: Voices from the Revolution" that was published in 1999. That book spent much space trying to argue that the open source movement was legitimate and here to stay. That argument has long since been settled, so this book takes up the current and future trends of the open source movement. The essays can be read in any order, and depending on your expertise, some may not be of any real interest to you- for example the open source biology essay might not be valuable to someone interested in network security. However, all essays are written to be accessible to a wide audience in spite of that fact. For example, I have no background in biology whatsoever, but I still found the essay on open source biology an understandable and interesting read. I particularly enjoyed the essay on the open source paradigm shift by Tim O'Reilly. His premise is that free and open source developers are in much the same position today that IBM was in 1981 when it changed the rules of the computer industry, but failed to understand the consequences of the change. This allowed others, Microsoft in particular, to reap the benefits. O'Reilly concludes thatexisting proprietary software vendors are no better off, playing by the old rules while the new rules are reshaping the industry around them. Another favorite of mine was on the commoditization of software in which it is explained that this process has been driven by standards, in particular by the rise of communications-oriented systems such as the Internet, which depend on shared protocols, and define the interfaces and datatypes shared between cooperating components instead of those components' internals. There are also two fascinating essays on the open source movement in China and India, neither of which was really a factor when the first edition of this book was published six years ago. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in where technology might be headed in the future, not just those who are employed in the tech industry. I notice that nothing about the contents of the book is currently shown by Amazon, so I show the table of contents here for the purpose of completeness:
The list of essays are:

4-0 out of 5 stars Deconstructing Coop
Coop, what can be said about the non-traditional depiction of work that embodies the illustrative nature of Coops portfolio? The answer is that Coop has the traditional style of a tattoo artist pin up and the ranges of visionary styles that create imagery that have strong Freudian ID overtones.

Bottom-line Coop is a fantastic and unique artist with a depth of perception in the human psychosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devil of a good time...
A vast majority of Coop's art featured in Devil's Advocate are, in actuality, posters the artist was commissioned to create for various rock shows and punk concerts, with the challenging task of grabbing the attention of casual passers-by and hopefully get them to attend whatever concert or event they're promoting.

In this task you'll discover that Coop's posters more than succeed in catching your eye, in fact, they demand you stop and look!

Such posters include aliens wrestling with curvy female astronauts, a sleek Creature from the Black Lagoon, babes with hot rods, tiki temptresses and Betty page-esque hotties flirting at you from the poster in luscious color.

From another artist, all of this could of come across as vulgar and cheap, but instead, it oozes raw sexuality and is just a heck of a lot of fun.Don't miss out. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly interesting, but contains factual errors
On a certain page of "Matter" a callout next to a picture of a glass lens states that "glass flows over time".This is a widely believed myth that is simply not true. The "evidence" for the liquid nature of glass comes from old church and cathedral windows that appear to be thicker at the bottom as the glass has flowed over the centuries. This is not the case. Here is why they are thicker at the bottom:

"In Mediaeval times panes of glass were often made by the Crown glass process.A lump of molten glass was rolled, blown, expanded, flattened and finally spun into a disc before being cut into panes. The sheets were thicker towards the edge of the disc and were usually installed with the heavier side at the bottom."

Examples of other pieces of ancient glassware (Roman, etc.) exhibit no signs of glass "flow".

4-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing the matter with this book!
"Eyewitness Matter" tells everything about Matter. It has chapters on solid matter, liquid matter and gas matter, plus chapters on molecules in motion, crystals, hot matter and more! All of the chapters in the book have descriptive information on the topics in Matter. If you have gotten the other Eyewitness Science Series books, then make sure you have this one. ... Read more

Product Description
American Beauty is a 1999 American drama film, directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball. Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a middle-aged office worker who has a midlife crisis after becoming infatuated with his teenage daughter's best friend. The film co-stars Annette Bening and Thora Birch as Lester's wife and daughter respectively. Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley and Chris Cooper also feature. American Beauty marked acclaimed theater director Mendes' film directorial debut; it was also Ball's first produced film screenplay. The film was financed by DreamWorks, which bought Ball's spec script for a six-figure sum in 1998. Spacey was Mendes' first choice for the role of Lester Burnham, though DreamWorks had urged the director to consider better-known actors; similarly, the studio suggested several actors for the role of Carolyn?Lester's wife?until Mendes cast Bening without DreamWorks' knowledge. Principal photography took place between December 1998 and February 1999 on soundstages at the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank, California and on location in Los Angeles. The film underwent several changes during editing that affected its tone and eliminated expository bookend scenes. ... Read more

Excerpt: Marlin Oliver Briscoe (born September 10, 1945 in Oakland, California) is a former American collegiate and Professional Football wide receiver/quarterback who played professionally for nine years. Before being drafted by the American Football League's Denver Broncos in the 1968 Common Draft, Briscoe played high school football at Omaha South High School and college football at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Briscoe was 5-foot-10 and 177 pounds when the AFL's Broncos took him in the 14th-round of the 1968 draft. He was eighth on the Broncos' QB depth chart in training camp. On September 29, 1968, starter Steve Tensi suffered a broken collarbone, and backup Joe DiVito was spotty. Head coach Lou Saban summoned Briscoe from the sidelines in the fourth quarter against the Boston Patriots. Briscoe's first play was a 22-yard completion. On his second series he orchestrated an 80-yard touchdown drive. He completed a 21-yard pass and ran for 38 more himself, carrying it the last 12 yards for the score. When Marlin Briscoe broke the Denver huddle and surveyed the Cincinnati Bengals defense as he walked to the line of scrimmage Oct. 6, 1968, he became the first starting black quarterback in the modern era, extending the American Football League's propensity to use blacks at positions they were denied in the NFL. Briscoe threw 14 touchdown passes that year, still Denver's rookie record. He completed only 41.5 percent of his passes, but averaged a very good 7.1 yards per attempt and his 17.1 yards per completion led the American Football ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1922788 ...
