Product Description
The movement towards creating sustainable communities has gained increased prominence with approaches such as New Urbanism, yet there are few examples of the successes. This text offers an analysis of one such example: Village Homes outside Davis, California. The area offers features including extensive common areas and green space; community gardens, orchards and vineyeards; narrow streets; pedestrian and bike paths; solar homes; and an innovative ecological drainage system. The authors were instrumental in the design of Village Homes and draw extensively on their practical experiences, as well as examples from a number of other sustainable village projects, to deliver a comprehensive analysis of the process of designing and building sustainable communities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE STORY OF THE "VILLAGE HOMES" IN DAVIS
The Village Homes community in Davis, California was designed by wife/husband team of Judy and Michael Corbett (and was heavily influenced by Howard's Garden City proposals, as well as the "greenbelt" communities in Maryland). Its keyword is "sustainable design"----that is, designing the community in such a way that it does not damage the environment, or consume nonrenewable resources. Begun in 1972, houses and apartments in this "garden village" are built to conserve energy and to utilize solar technology where possible, promote natural drainage of rainfall, have large open spaces for residents, feature "edible landscapes" (foliage such as fruit that can be picked for free by residents), and a sense of "community" promoted by the large number of public projects (such as building a playground for children).

The authors begin by saying, "When we set out to design and build Village Homes in 1972, it seemed unlikely that we would be successful. We had no financial assets and no track record in development....Luck was on our side.It took a great deal of tenacity and perseverence, but in the end we were able to overcome multiple obstacles and build Village Homes."This book details the struggle, and offers perceptive comments on both Village Homes, and similar community design movements.

Ironically (and unfortunately), despite the ultimate financial success of the community (their homes have probably the highest resale value in Davis), there have not been other similar-sized or larger communities created based on the Village Homes model. The authors note that "Over time, houses in Village Homes have been growing increasingly less affordable.Over a twenty-year period, the community's reputation has changed from 'that hippie subdivision' to 'the most costly place per square foot to live in Davis.'"

They also note that "The shopping center serves as a place to purchase goods and services, but ... it fails to function as a town center for the area it serves....Aside from a few restaurants, there is little or no space for leisure or socializing. There are no plazas or civic spaces."

This 2000 book will be of considerable interest to those interested in intentional communities, ecovillages, permaculture, environmentalism, the New Urbanism, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read for those interested in green living
This description of a well-designed eco community is useful on several fronts:1) it mentions several sustainable communities in case you are looking for a better place to live;2) It tells the realistic story of the challenges involved in creating a sustainable community, in case you are thinking of starting such a community; and 3) It makes an easy and inspiring read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sustainable Communities
Judy and Michael Corbett have written a brief and thoughtful, not to mention well-informed book on the subject of designing and building sustainable communities. The various chapters on the history of their subject, on their seminal and justifiably respected community in Davis, CA,and on elements of the planning process and the integration of real estatepragmatics with environmental ideals will serve as both a user-friendlyintroduction for lay readers and a handy reference for professionalslooking to expand their horizons. The writing is clear and uncomplicated, the design of the book is simple and straightforward, and there is the nicesense throughout that it has been put together by people who know wherofthey speak. One complaint: it's unclear why a paperback published by anon-academic press would be priced a bit high but it is unfortunate, as it willserve to prevent this book from reaching the broader audience it deserves. ... Product Description
This story includes a brief excursion into Western human history and through pre-Industrial European towns and villages, in order to explore our fundamental nature and our real needs as human beings. The journey will show us what sustainable human settlements that existed for hundreds of years and into the present looked like before the era of fossil fuels. This view of a past full of insight and ingenuity - both of which were somehow lost as we blindly embraced everything "modern" - allows us to visualize a future world with healthy, fulfilling lifestyles, and buildings and communities that nurture the human spirit and exist in harmony with nature. This book will help us understand what is necessary to rediscover the extraordinary human creativity and ingenuity that have repeatedly saved us throughout our existence and allowed us to thrive as a species. Drawing from the best of our past, present, and visionary re-thinking of both, The Poetry of Architecture is an indispensable guide to a sustainable and livable future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images...Great read
I bought this book yesterday and plan to carry it during my travels to Europe next week. I have yet to get through the entire book, but I love the way the author has captured the beauty of European countryside and its architecture through the mesmerizing images. The travelogue is heart-warming and beautiful. The history text is a bit of a drag, but gives you a feel for understanding the evolution of European culture.
As an architect myself, I find it difficult to find a well written book that brings together history, politics and its evolution along with emphasizing the role that architecture plays on the human mind and our existence as a species. This one looks very promising so far. I look forward to reading the rest of the book during my long flight to Frankfurt.

5-0 out of 5 stars A World of learning for socio-political enthusiasts with a leaning towards architecture
The Poetry of Architecture

I've read Mike Corbett's earlier book "A Better Place to Live: New Designs for Tomorrow's Communities" , and was excited to lay my hands on "The Poetry of Architecture". Corbett has an uncanny sense of space and human response to beauty and aesthetics (as can be seen by his conceptualization and development of the 'Village Homes' in Davis, California). In this book, he gives the reader a deeper understanding of the history and the evolution of European civilization, religion, politics and architecture, which he also intersperses with anecdotes from his travels though the continent. The first half of the book hence lays the groundwork for understanding the relationships between nature, architecture and human mind and its development through the ages to the industrialized 20th century.
He ends the book brilliantly by analyzing the pitfalls of the lifestyles we lead today as a mechanical and capitalistic society far removed from the beauty of the pre-industrial ages.
The book is an eye opener for architects/students, and a must read for anybody in governance and politics, especially at the local level. My personal favorite is the appendix that list the various steps that we can take as a community at the local level to ensure a sustainable lifestyle for ourselves and our children. Corbett churns out a winner once again. Very thought-provoking and inspiring ! ... Read more

Product Description

This is the compelling yet disturbing story of Corbett Mack (1892–1974), an opiate addict who was a member of the Nuumuu (Numa), or Northern Paiute. The Northern Paiute are best known as the people who produced Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet whose revitalistic teachings swept the Indian world in the 1890s. Mack is from the generation following the collapse of the Ghost Dance religion, a generation of Nomogweta or “half-breeds” (also called “stolen children”)—Paiute of mixed ancestry who were raised in an increasingly bicultural world and who fell into virtual peonage to white (often Italian) potato farmers.

Around the turn of the century, the use of opium became widespread among the Paiute, adopted from equally victimized Chinese laborers with whom they worked closely in the fields. The story of Corbett Mack is an uncompromising account of a harsh and sometimes traumatic life that was typical of an entire generation of Paiute. It was a life born out of the turmoil and humiliation of an Indian boarding school, troubled by opiate addiction, bound to constant labor in the fields, yet nonetheless made meaningful through the perseverance of Paiute cultural traditions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thougt it was...
This is the story of Corbett Mack, a "Stolen Child" (half blood) of the Northern Paiute of the late 1800's. It tells the story in his own words of what it was like to be unaccepted in the white world nor the Indian world. The plight of the Notrhern Paiute after the arrival of thewhiteman. He became an alcohol and opiate addict, and lead a tragic lifethat was somewhat typical of Native Americans during that time.

Judgingthe book by it's title I had hoped it was about the life of the NorthernPaiute prior to white man's arrival. A good book for this purpose is"Indians of The Plateau and Great Basin" by Victoria Sherrow. ... Read more

Product Description
Business process outsourcing (BPO) is a $6 trillion global industry involving thousands of companies and millions of employees.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) is one of the very few business tools available to managers with the power to fundamentally transform their organizations. Done on a global scale, BPO enables companies to simultaneously reengineer their existing operations, create a more flexible and adaptable organizational structure, and tap the best minds in the world to create an innovation explosion.

For the first time ever, BPO's best-known expert and pioneer, Michael Corbett, who helped craft IBM's entry into the outsourcing business, details the opportunities presented by BPO as well as a plan for implementing and sustaining its benefits.

The Outsourcing Revolution is written for executives and managers in organizations of any size who want to learn how BPO can improve their company's performance. More than a ""how-to"" book, it provides a comprehensive framework for decision making and action based on the real-life experiences of executives heading up successful initiatives for their companies today. Readers will learn how to:

* Determine the value of BPO for any process.

* Analyze risk, evaluate its potential impact, and use a range of techniques to reduce, eliminate, and manage that risk.

* Identify, evaluate, and select the right partner or partners.

* Turn contractor relationships into long-term, successful BPO relationships.

* Transition people, processes, and technologies to the BPO state.

* Identify, develop, and reward outsourcing managers.

* Create new ways of doing business ahead of the competition.

The Outsourcing Revolution features case studies detailing how specific companies planned, implemented, and are managing BPO. Results from surveys of more than 1,500 companies provide real data on what organizations around the world are doing and why, as well as what does and doesn't work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Outsourcing is a great concept
This book gave me a logical and linear process to review the value of outsourcing in my business. I'm a marketing consultant to the accounting industry and my customers are always complaining about a shortage of qualified staff. Knowledgeable accountants are just plain not available to hire at just about any reasonable cost in the past 6 years.

I liked the `value chain' process of determining what other functions could be outsourced in a business, not just to India but maybe local vendors as well. We discovered that with a little thought we might be able to move up to 40% of our operation off site this year, and possibly another 20% next year.

I'm recommending to my accountant customers that they all consider hiring one to five staff from India and start moving all low value, boring tasks off shore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for Historical View on Outsourcing but Not Cutting Edge Current View
This books is a short, conversational style (not instructive or informational) read that will leave you largely unsatsified if you are looking for a how-to, why-is, where-are, or what-if.

Outsourcing and offshoring are evolving too quickly and they've already left this offering behind. This book addresses the when-did and who-was, as in personal memoirs. Its not what I would categorize a business book and I think that is what people have expected of it.You get what you pay for so don't let the value price fool you. It was one of the originals but the bookshelves have filled with dozens of much more value provided guides on the subject matter.

Borrow - don't buy, is my advice

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Breed
For my money, clearly the best book available on outsourcing. While others seem loaded up with simplistic templates and general information readily available over the web, Corbett actually explains what's happening and why and provided me (and my company) a clear roadmap for all of our outsourcing work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
The arguement on why to outsource has been debated ad nauseum. Either you see the financial and organization value or you're behind the curve.

Most business leaders are convinced, but if you're not, this book will provide you the same old reasons. I found the book dated as compared to other selections on outsourcing in the book store.

My suggestion is borrow this one...don't buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nuts and Bolts Offhsoring and Outsourcing Story

Product Description
A fascinating architectural study in museum design and urban planning.

Designed by the internationally renowned Swiss firm of Herzog & de Meuron, winners of the 2001 Pritzker Prize, the new de Young Museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is a stunning architectural tour de force. This book documents the complex five-year process that resulted in an outstanding contribution to contemporary museum architecture.

Founded by San Francisco Chronicle publisher Michael de Young, the museum originated in the Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 and grew to become the city's largest art museum. Its superb permanent collection includes the arts of Africa, Oceania, and traditional cultures of the Americas; American painting and sculpture from the colonial period to the present; and both Western and non-Western textiles.

After the de Young was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the museum's fate—and the decision to replace the old building with a new museum on the same site—became the focus of intense public debate. How Herzog & de Meuron, in cooperation with the San Francisco firm of Fong & Chan Architects and Oakland-based landscape designer Walter Hood, responded to the challenge of creating a building in harmony with its park setting is an important theme of the story.

Lavishly illustrated with color photographs as well as plans, drawings, and models, the book traces the architects' creative process in striking detail. The new de Young is significant as Herzog & de Meuron's first major building in North America and as the first museum the architects have designed from the ground up. Reflecting its surroundings, the building is clad entirely in a skin of dimpled and perforated, naturally oxidized copper panels, whose abstract pattern was distilled from manipulated photographs of the park's tree canopy. With its elegant, twisting tower rising above the tree line, providing visitors with dramatic views, the de Young is a superlative work of architecture and a handsome tribute to the city of San Francisco. 250 illustrations, 200 in color. ... Product Description

The relationship between rural communities and contemporary education is analyzed in this innovative case study of the town of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia. Rather than supporting place-based curriculums and establishing social, economic, and cultural networks within suburban populations, the modern school has typically stood in opposition to local life. Contemporary classes also incorrectly teach rural children that their communities and traditional lifestyles have nothing of value to offer. Product Description
Featuring entries by some of America's most prominent living poets and writers, including John Ashbery, Paul Auster, Amiri Baraka, Diane DiPrima, Susan Howe, Peter Gizzi, Anne Waldman, and John Yau, The Blind See Only This World is a tribute to American poet John Wieners. Wieners, associated with the San Francisco Renaissance and the Black Mountain School-he studied at Black Mountain College under Charles Olson during the 1950's-is also a definitive figure in the Boston/Cambridge literary world. He is renowned among contemporary poets for his maverick wit, his Romantic daring, and most of all for his ability to poke fun at himself. The Blind See Only This World accompanies the conferring of Pressed Wafer's first annual Lifetime Achievement Award on John Wieners this past spring, and testifies to the wide range of poets he has influenced and inspired. ...
