5-0 out of 5 stars side splitting laughter
As I was reading this book, it felt like Bill Cosby was doing a stand up routine like he did for "Bill Cosby, himself".I purchased this book back when it was first released and had it with me on a weekend getaway.I was sitting in front of a fireplace in a beautiful bed and breakfast (it was winter time) and I could not stop laughing out loud while reading this book.My stomach hurt, I laughed so hard. The things he talks about are real life situations, and sometimes you don't even think about them unless someone else mentions them and you say to yourself "You know, he's right" or "I never thought of that!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Chewing the Fat
I have loved most of Bill Cosby's books, yet his two most recent publications, this one and "Congratulations! Now What? A Book for Graduates" have fallen very flat.Perhaps I would have appreciated this book more if I was in the same age group.Even as health conscious as I am, I still think Cosby missed the mark.

Each chapter continues a theme of the pitfalls of getting old.Whether it means having to change your diet or alter other vices from your life, the body cannot have certain things if we are to live a long life.Obviously, Cosby takes a humorous approach to this subject. He does not actually claim to be a health expect. The problem is that Cosby's jokes have already been done, mostly by many other people.

I would recommend most of Cosby's books expect those cited. It seems Cosby is at his best when he is talking about the family or experiences of his youth. In his most recent work, he may be straying too far outside his strength.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Am What I Ate
ISBN 0060545747 - Not the sort of laugh out loud funny that Cosby usually does, this book is still amusing - more importantly, it's an honest look at the results of a lifetime of bad habits. For folks who won't listen to their doctors, take it from a man who's clearly not fond of listening to his doctor, either!

I was disappointed to not find this book on a par with Cosby's usual humor.Still, not a terrible read, either.Read it for a chuckle, pick up a copy of his stand-up routines for real laughs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Nice!
Whether you do or don't like the humor of Bill Cosby, you should read this book if you have any sense of humor at all then you will enjoy it if you do! It's everything funny about why good food can make us feel bad. This book is great for anyone who is having to go to the doctor... over and over... or multiple doctors because it reminds you to laugh to keep from crying! And helps you laugh so hard you cry - at least I did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Cosby
Bill Cosby the doctor of comedy has written a book about a healthy life stile. If you dodge diets, you should read it. If you're creative you should read it. If you like imagining people making a fool of themselves in the act of not following their diets you should read it. In my opinion this is a funny book. He eats a cookie and gets caught because he said he was going to the bathroom. If you like funny books you'll like it. ... Read more

Product Description
A shocking reality all parents should read.

"Jocelyn challenges parents to question themselves as to who is ultimately accountable for the interest of their children."-Dr. Daniel Moses, Founder of Book Source 4Kids, Inc.

"I'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was two? Where were you when he was twelve? Where were you when he was eighteen, and how come you don't know he had a pistol? And where is his father, and why don't you know where he is?" -Bill Cosby

In abusing Cosby, we blame everyone but ourselves for not being noble and decent parents. All of Cosby's history of contribution and love faces an onslaught of abuse. Here is one of our beloved leaders who, for more than half a century, has donated his life's work to loving and cherishing children and their families. Yet he is scorned for his demanding call to action. Assuming responsibility lies at the core of what Cosby stands for.  Nothing frightens me more than the approach taken toward Bill Cosby and the realization that many are willing to place children in the shadows of civilization in exchange for their own dominance and wealth. These intellectual "giants" replace, with excuses and reproach, the common sense approach of embracing family values. They will fight to the end for the so-called "deprived," while the children remain invisible in their world of immature parents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Genocide Is Not Only In Darfur
As a black woman, I have never conceptualized the idea that we are destroying our own race.I have never connected to the concept that we as black people are the main culprits in the eradication of our own race. This young man is brilliant and courageous for having the gust to say enough is enough.

My brothers, the genocide is not only in Africa, but right here in our doorsteps. We are killing each other senselessly.Maxwell is 100% correct. My black brothers, you are committing genocide.Every time you abandoned your children and disconnect with your responsibilities, you are destroying your own race.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speaking Truthfully
This writer says what most people are afraid to say.Black people have many opportunities in this country. We often forget that in society, we all have to do for ourselves. The suffering of black children fall upon the shoulder of the black family.

He uses an approach that often not used within black philosophical thinking; he goes directly at the core of the problem. He attacks black leaders and shows his leadership potential in not being afraid to tell the truth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.
"Childhood" started off rather funny, but then lost steam as it progressed.Bill Cosby is a very funny person, and I've enjoyed his stand-up comedy about childhood and parenting, but reading about it is very different, and I felt he tried too hard to be funny.I sometimes got confused at what age he was speaking about in his childhood and sometimes it all just felt muddled.I also wished he had either solely spoken about his childhood, or his own children, as they transitions into both were a bit choppy.I "sorta" recommend

3-0 out of 5 stars Child's Play
The books written by Bill Cosby give unique and humorous insight into his chosen topic. While Fatherhood became his best selling book, little is ever mentioned of Childhood. While this book has the standard format of most Cosby books, it does not measure up to the standard of his other books.

Childhood is a brief chronology of some of Cosby's childhood adventures.Periodically, he uses his own children as a means of comparison to demonstrate the changes in the stage of life known as childhood. Some of the more entertaining stories that I related to included childhood crushes, finding games in most any object, and terrorizing substitute teachers.I was particularly amused by the Spanish Fly story and the hose-ball games. In hindsight, children of years gone by could have been amused by almost anything.

While the book had its moments, it never made me laugh the way some of Cosby's other books did.I think this might be a book that only true Cosby fans would enjoy.I believe there is good reason that this book is not as famous as some of his other books. It is just not as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Cosby has never really grown up...
...and that is a good thing. In this book, his fourth, Cosby again collects some of his material from his comic routines to compare and contrast his childhood with that of his children.I have alway found Cosby at his funniest whenever he shares the misadventures of his youth in the projects. The book also has a warm, nostalgic feel for a time long past.Sadly some of my favorite routines (i.e. "Chicken Heart" and the one where he and Weird Harold stay far longer at a horror movie than they should have) are absent, something that keeps the book from getting five stars.Nonetheless the book is a laughter inducing read.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious all the way through
Coz is on a roll in this one.I laughed all the way through. It's like listening to one of his old standup records!

3-0 out of 5 stars amusing
It made me chuckle, but seems I've heard most of it before during his stand up routines. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Matt's Review
This book, Cosby The Life of a Comedy Legend is a biography about Bill Cosby and his struggles and accomplishments through is long life. I thought this book was an alright book, at times it was kind of confusing and at some parts of the book it was boring, for it was the same stuff over and over for a bit. The book was very fun to read and it was very informative, I learned so much about Bill Cosby. The book is very informative about Cosby, from his childhood, to him in collage, to him has an adult, and some present day information. Some of this information included information like: Bill Cosby was born in July of 1936 to Anna and William Cosby. Cosby was born and raised in Philidelphia. Cosby went to Temple University. Bill Cosby went to the navy after dropping out of High School. Cosby played football and track in collage. Before Cosby was a comedian he was a bartender. Things like that. So if your bored one day or you need to do a project or something on a famous person, consider picking up this book; it's great!

4-0 out of 5 stars A man for all things
The book depicts the life of Bill Cosby, and his rise to superstardom. The book gives the reader insight into a myriad of situations, like the attempted rape of Cosby's daughter by Mike Tyson, the sucker punch that Bill Cosby landed on the face of Tommy Smothers, the day Cosby stopped mid-show, and the failures of his movies and various other projects. The book is an honest portrayal of the total life of Bill Cosby - both his failures and successes.

The book offers a glimpse into Cos' breakthrough performances on television and movies. Everything to the I-Spy television series in the 1960s to the movie Ghost Dad in the 1990s. Always under the public microscope, Cosby has been overtly criticized for never being black enough and for not dealing directly with black issues. When the Cosby show first appeared, people criticized the show for being a false representation of a black middle-class family. But Cosby always had a vision for creating a show that would depict human issues and behavior and not black issues nor white issues - just human issues. It is somewhat ironic that the same media that chastises actors and comedians for speaking out on issues, also chastises actors and comedians when they gives us their opinions on issues. For example, the same media that tore down Cosby for not standing up for black issues, also criticized him when he began to lecture and give speeches about the issues he felt strongly about - namely, education and television programming. For Cosby, it has always been a lose-lose situation.

I wholeheartedly recommend the book. Let me end on a funny note...
