Product Description
The essays in this volume all originated at the 2001 conference of the International Society for the Study of Time. The theme 'Time and Uncertainty' sounds redundant, but the contributions try to come to terms with the irreducible openness of time and the impermanence of life. The essays from various disciplines have been grouped around 'fracture and rupture' (grappling with time and uncertainty as a breach) and 'rapture and structure (solving uncertainty into pattern). ... Product Description
Arnaldo Momigliano was convinced that all disciplines need to be aware of their own history. His famous lecture "Ancient History and the Antiquarian", delivered in 1949 at the Warburg Institute, and published in 1950 in the "Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes", has become a landmark. In it he showed how historiography had been changed by the recognition that what historians had left out of the record could be put back by the antiquarians. He argued that a comprehensive interest in the vestiges of ancient civilization, beginning in the Renaissance and refined and enlarged during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, made a rigid distinction between historical and antiquarian studies unjustifiable; furthermore, the standards set by the antiquarians in the understanding and interpretation of the past still have relevance. In December 1991, four years after Momigliano's death, an international colloquium was held at the Warburg Institute in his memory. The participants, from London, Berlin, Paris, Princeton and Rome, presented papers which both illustrated Momigliano's theme and assess his own contribution. This volume presents these papers, and borrows its title from Momigliano's original lecture. ... Product Description
Governmental GAAP Guide discusses all the promulgated accounting principles applicable to financial reporting by state and local governments. It delivers a thorough analysis of GASB Statements, GASB Interpretations, GASB Technical Bulletins, NCGA Statements, NCGA Interpretations and certain AICPA Statements of Position, as well as Auditing and Accounting Guides.Everything has been analyzed and restated in plain English and is supported by timesaving examples and illustrations. The Guide alerts readers to and discusses financial accounting and reporting standards necessary to prepare the basic external financial statements of a governmental entity. (A companion publication, Governmental GAAP Practice Manual, illustrates how governmental financial statements are prepared based on the standards established by GASB-34 and beyond.) The Governmental GAAP Guide is organized into six main sections. The first section, Basic Governmental Accounting Concepts and Standards, describes the fundamental concepts and principles that provide the foundation for financial reporting by governmental entities. Governmental Accounts and Transactions--Government-Wide Financial Statements, Fund Financial Statements, and Fiduciary Financial Statements covers specific accounting and reporting standards. The next three sections discuss fund reporting by (1) governmental funds, (2) proprietary funds, and (3) fiduciary funds.Accounting and reporting standards for public colleges and universities as mandated by GASB-34 are described in the section, Reporting by Special Purpose Governments. To facilitate research, major topics in the text are cross-referenced to the pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. Illustrations, figures and paragraphs called "Observations" demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles. The Guide also includes a cross-reference to the original pronouncements and a detailed topical index. This year's edition is current through GASB-50. ... Read more

Product Description
CPA s Multistate Guide to Ethics and Professional Conduct provides CPAs with a single reference source regarding ethics and professional standards set by the national and international standard-setting bodies, as well as the individual state societies. As the book states: "The importance of proper ethical behavior by accountants cannot be understated. As seen in the aftermath of the high profile accounting scandals of the 21st century, an absence of or decline in ethics and moral character leads to a loss of public trust. A loss of public trust undermines the very fabric of our societal and economic beliefs and actions. When public trust is lost, previously unspoken or informal conventions of proper behavior are lost; and, when these informal conventions are lost, government and the public resort to more rules and regulations to restore their trust". The goal of the authors is to promote ethical conduct within the accounting profession by providing ethics concepts, interpretive material, and practical examples. This book gives readers both a technical and in-depth review of professional conduct as it applies to practitioners and CPAs who work in an industry setting. This guide is a must-have for CPAs wishing to stay compliant in an ever-changing regulatory environment. It is filled with Practice Pointers, Observations, Actual Ethics Cases and a special Ethics Q&A. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading: myths smashed, eyes opened.
This wonderful book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in evolution or high level nutrition. You will soon see clearly that evolution is not fully understood. The case is made that evolution is constrained by nutritional requirements as much as a car is by the highway (my analogy not theirs). The myth of the boundless potential of evolution is destroyed forever, and sobering limits are imposed.

Don't blame Darwin- they make it clear that he saw the "highway as well as the car", but we have deified his theory and overlooked the limitations that he actually wrote about. One feels somewhat chastened after 30 years or so of blind worship to find that evolution is not the magic amulet taught in school, but merely a powerful tool with quite mundane limitations. These limitations must be understood if one wishes to have any scientific credibility. Sadly only a minority of scientists understand these limitations, and this little book makes the opinions of many seem peurile.

The philosophical and thought provoking discussion is most stimulating- the many interesting facts and anecdotes making it most most worthwhile reading. Like a kitten, my eyes have been opened. Thank you Crawford and Marsh

5-0 out of 5 stars A different view of evolution
I know quite a bit about nutrition and the problem with our modern diet, so I was mostly interested in their theories on how nutrition has shaped evolution.

The authors present some truly astounding theories on theevolution of humankind, and argue their case well. The book is a bit slowin the beginning, but once they start talking about the evolution of lifefrom the algae onward, hand on to your hats!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - supplies missing pieces of the dietary puzzle
As I began to read, I had a sense of deja vu - and no wonder, it was published in the UK as The Driving Force in 1989. I lent my copy to some miserable bastard who never returned it and it's now out of print, so I'mdelighted to have re-acquired it, albeit inadvertantly; I recommend ithighly.Don't be put off by any philosphical excess here, theories of ourorigin don't matter nearly as much as the biochemistry set out in this bookwhich can literally restore your health if you have a Western degenerativedisease.Crawford and Marsh elucidate an emerging paradigm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Confirms nutritional links with man's mind and shape
While Crawford and March do a good job of presenting documented information, the data appears to confirm creation rather than evolution.Certainly nutrition can affect the size of man's brain, body and mentalcapacity. But had anthropologists written this book they would havefalsely concluded that modern man is a different species.Mankind canprogress or regress depending upon nutritional factors.Mankind appears tobe in regression at the present time.Population expansion may forcefamines and disease, lest we forget the earth's human population has gonefrom 1.5 to 6.0 billion in just a couple of centuries.Good reading forthe serious reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Controversial thesis that connects evolution with conditions
This book was co-authoredby David Marsh. Please ring 0044 171 460 2027 for details of other publications by D.Marsh. As co-author I wish to point out that the heterodox content of our major thesis as set out in this bookhas lead to severe academic ostracization of Michael Crawfurd in theintellectually impoverished and narrow milieu of biochemical nutritionists.Assuming that you, the potential reader, are not constrained by narrowacademic rivalries may I invite you to enlarge your conception of theprocesses that have shaped our development and that of all the species withwhich we share this planet. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good idea, but a little to difficult
Reviewed by Zoltan Freedman (age 8) for Reader Views (08/10)

This is a hard book to review because it is not a regular story book. It is like an activity book and the story sort of happens a little bit on each page as you go through it. Each page has questions and spots in the book where you can draw your answers. Some the questions are riddles. Some let you draw things from your imagination. I like the imagination ones better because the riddles are usually hard. I like the imagination suggestions that it gives.

A riddle that I could answer was "Larva is just one of my names and what a beautiful insect I become when I spread my wings. Draw me." One of the imagination questions was "Search deep within your mind and chime up with your own creature. Draw it."

I think this book is okay (not great) for eight-year-olds because the drawing stuff is fun but some of the questions are hard.

I think that "The Mystery of Journeys Crowne" would be better if there was more to read in it. I would like more story and less activities. I think the story about Bazel (the explorer) trying to unlock a mystery would be a good story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations in "The Mystery of Journeys Crowne."
This book is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I have ever seen.It is truly an original and imaginative way to present many interesting facts,as the reader/artist is led through a picture wonderland of clues and interesting challenges. This is great fun - especially for kids who love to draw.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the über activity book!
Totally novel and more details than you can take in with just one reading! Using only your wits and your creative pen/pencil/crayon design your own tale and solve the mystery. This is the über activity book! Keep those kids busy with their nose stuck in a book - and no weapons are allowed. You'll have to use your own talents this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow,super imaginative and so detailed.
This is no ordinary book,my 8 year old could not stop enjoying herself. She was delighted with the colorful illustrations of this book. This is one of those books that make the child think and create and imagine.its all fun and games for the child but to a parent you know that this also means its a challenging book.My 11 year old thought this was COOL as well. This is going to make a exciting christmas or birthday gift for any creative kid.Like the previous reviewers have said this book is truly unique, breath taking with vivid colors and detail galore and a book you and your child will love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging, creative and fun
I wish there had been books like this when I was young! After setting the scene with a story page, the reader is thereafter encouraged to create and draw his own tale, whilst following clues to bring it to a conclusion. Some of the challenges include musical notation and decifering whilst much is left to the imagination.I fell at the first hurdle, unable to find the golden key which was supposedly under my nose, but that did not deter me.The illustrations throughout are consistently good, bright and attractive.Congratulations to Crawford for a truly unique activity book.I am hungry for more. ... This book brings together leading figures from the field to provide an up-to-date introduction to anthropological genetics, aimed at advanced undergraduates to professionals, in genetics, biology, medicine and anthropology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reflects Today's State of the Art
This text is basically an anthropology textbook on human evolution that integrates the latest biological and cultural research. It comes from the merger of genetic analysis and cultural anthropology. The authors see a co-evolution of genes with culture that helps to define the organism and the environment in which they live in which both are acting as cause and effect.

This book was written at the suggestion of the American Association of Anthropological Genetics (AAAG) with the intent of being used as a textbook at the advanced undergraduage and graduate level. It is broken into four major parts:

Theory: Covering Evolution and Genetic Variations and Isolates
Methods: Field Research, historical demography, molecular markers
General Applications: Forensic DNA, Emerging technology, Linkage analysis
The Human Diaspora: Africa, Europe, Oceania, Americas.

Dr. Crawford originally was to be the editor of the book. Due to contributors failing to meet promised deadlines, he has written a substantial part of the book. ... Read more

Description
In this beautifully illustrated history, U.S. Naval Historical Center staff historians examine how three naval warriors demonstrated honor, courage, and commitment when confronting superior British forces during America's "second war of independence." David Porter in the frigate Essex orchestrated a devastating attack on the British whaling fleet in the Pacific; Joshua Barney's naval flotilla in the Chesapeake helped delay the British attack on Washington in 1814; and Thomas Macdonough's superior tactical leadership at the Battle of Plattsburgh led to the defeat of his Royal Navy opponents and prompted the British government to negotiate a peace agreement.

Product Description

This work is a training manual for members of the crew of the 1797 United States frigate Constitution, the world’s oldest warship in commission. The venerable vessel, which earned its nickname, “Old Ironsides,” during the War of 1812, is today permanently berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard, across the Charles River from its building site in Boston, Massachusetts. The historic frigate is open to visitors year round, with tours provided by the crew, active sailors in the United States Navy. The lessons in the manual are divided among three groups, corresponding to the three skill levels of the tour guides, Basic, Advanced, and Master. In addition to the chronology and major events in the history of USS Constitution, the manual explains the historical contexts in which those events took place. The text is written in an engaging and accessible manner that will make it attractive to anyone interested in USS Constitution or in the early U.S. Navy in general.
