Product Description

A fresh perspective enlivens this classic story about a losing team with an energetic new coach. Written by two Ohio teenagers about their high school's cross-country team, this account offers engaging portraits of the kids and their coach, passes on lessons of hard work and sacrifice, and follows the ascent of the Salem Quakers cross-country team to a first-place ranking in their conference and third place at the 2003 state championships. Along the way the teenagers learn the unromantic truth about the athletic association that regulates their high school sport—legal wrangling and uproar ensue when officials find scoring errors in a postseason meet. As they develop their talents and teamwork, the teens also learn valuable lessons about sports rules, bureaucracy, and true success.

4-0 out of 5 stars An impressive effort
This is a book about a high school cross country season written by two of the team members.

As I read it I had to go back a couple of times to verify that the authors were actually recent high school students. It is an amazing effort. While it may lack the polish of professional writing it more than makes up for it by it's realism.A professional writer may have made certain events sound more exciting than they really were but as I read it, I found myself silently thanking the authors for simply "telling it like it is".

I am glad I found this book.Despite the young age of the authors it in not only a book for teens. It is a book for teens or adults to enjoy and learn from.Great value for money.

4-0 out of 5 stars From Adversity Can Come Victory
Residing in Ohio, the chronicle of the travails and triumphs of the Salem High School cross-country team has extra meaning; the scoring error in the state championship meet which spoiled a solid season was a controversial issue chronicled in the sports media throughout the Buckeye State.

And that is where the story could have ended, but is only the beginning. The hard work to climb the hill back to the top the following season is the compelling story from team members and cousins Paul and Joe Shivers.

The story is geared to high-school readers and could be used by coaches as a teaching tool. Champions are not made simply from reaching the finish line in first place; they are shaped by adversity and never giving up.

This is an inspirational story that is played every late-summer and fall out on turf courses throughout the nation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressing: From a high school runner
Personally, I found that this book wasn't very inspiring and was written quite amateurishly. The only reason I finished it was that it was given to me as gift. If you are looking for and inspiring running book I would highly recommend Bowerman and the Men of Oregon: The Story of Oregon's Legendary Coach and Nike's Cofounder.

1-0 out of 5 stars over-rated
To be perfectly honest this book was an utter dissapointment. The language is impressive for the authors age however the overall story line is lacking. The book overemphasized the work effort that the boys upon this team actually underwent, and also downsized the incredible amount of luck that they were able to have 5 extremely talented athletes in two very uncompetetive years for the state of Ohio. In addition the author Joe Shivers desperatley made himself up to be an important member of the team by exagerating the importance of the sixth runner. I myself have competed in numerous major cross country meets and other than within this book I have yet to find a meet where the winner was decided by a sixth runner. This is a prime example of how joe attempted to make his inability to make the top five somehow important and relevant to the story. Overall this is a story of ten or so spoiled boys that manage to be lucky enough through enormous talent and an uncompetetive state meet become state champions. The story has no depth and lacks any sort of inspiration that a book of this nature should posess. If you want a good running book try Running With The Buffaloes by chris lear but do not buy this book for it is a complete disapointment.

This book focuses on Conrad's Malay fiction and the way in which it deals with cross-cultural encoutners, cultural identity and cultural dislocation. Issues of race and gender are to the fore. There are a number of books which deal with Conrad and Empire, but Robert Hampson's book carves its own niche by taking the arguments of others further.

Product Description
Compiled and illustrated by Sister Joseph Marie, C.H.T. (Carmelite Hermit of the Trinity).
THE CARMELITE SAINTS in their prayers and reflections reveal a deep communion with the Passion of Jesus. In the light of Christ crucified they beheld the depths of the heart of God and discovered there as well the meaning of the human heart. We cannot reach the thicket of God's riches for which we were created, Saint John of the Cross says, without peering into the thicket of his sufferings.
One of the most fruitful practices of Christian piety is known as The Way of the Cross (or Stations of the Cross), a devotion that in all probability dates back to the era of the first Christians. As practiced today, the devotion centers on fourteen chosen representations of the sufferings of Christ on his way to Calvary. Each station or stop is a place for contemplation, a moment to gaze on the sorrowful Christ who remains close to us in the mystery of human suffering. One day while making the Way of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux was seized with a forceful love of God and totally plunged in fire and sweetness. Theologians see this grace as of special importance for the transmission of her Little Way.
Now we have the opportunity to make the Way of the Cross with five inspiring Carmelite saints. Following along with them Christ in his sufferings, we see that the Passion of Christ cannot be exhausted, and these saints have always more to tell us. This is not a book to be read but once and then discarded, it is a book for a lifetime. 'The Savior today looks at us, solemnly probing us, and asks each one of us: Will you remain faithful to the Crucified?' (Saint Edith Stein) ... Read more

The words that ring in his ears all his waking hours. So what does he say? Where I come from this stinks worse than pigs. From cradle to cross, these Journeys are much more than Christmastime tales, Joseph completes the series of three men touched and changed for all eternity by the baby, the boy, the man Yeshua. Perhaps the most overlooked and yet most famous father of all times gets shocking news that changes the course of history and blast Josephs beliefs. He knows this child is not his. Cant be. He hasnt touched her thought about it be he hasnt not in that way. Even if it was within the law for a betrothed couple to come together, it still was outside of Gods will. Mary should be a blushing bride, not the towns gossip. Joe's reaction may surprise you, maybe not. And that is just the beginning. The law allows him to turn her in and have her stoned. He considers his options. She's beginning to show. Everyone will know. He will be the laughing stock unless he divorces her, turning his back on the shame. But - he loves her. His heart is broken, but aches to hold her and make everything all right again. Only a miracle could save him, them. 4-0 out of 5 stars Some mislabeled photos, but a worthwhile book
This book is an interesting addition to one's Holocaust library. Being translated from Polish into English, the text does not always flow smoothly, but the awkwardness of expression does not mar the importance of this little known account of the bravery of some young Jewish children during WW II. The author was a member of the Jewish Resistance, which provided clothing, false identity cards and money to pay for food and shelter, to Jews they found hiding in "Aryan" Warsaw. He discovered a group of Jewish urchins, recently escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto. To survive, they sold cigarettes and other trifles in Three Crosses Square in central Warsaw, hiding their Jewishness. The author gradually befriended them and gained their trust. In talking with them, he learned their stories of family loss and narrow escapes. He buried his notes, dug them up years later and published them in the form of this book.

One negative thing about the book is that the names in at least two of the accompanying photos appear to be mislabeled: the photo of the 5 boys on the cover must have been reversed, if one examines the names of the boys on the same photo prior to page 18 (e.g. "Toothy" must be the lad on the right, not the left, etc.) In the young man's photo facing page 36, the name on the identity card is "Jasia". In the text, it is clear that Jasia is a young woman. These errors should have been corrected in recent editions, but were not.

One fact that was brought out repeatedly by the author is that the Poles who helped these young Jews were all too rare. Many of those who provided "dens" or safekeeping expected payment. Many of those who provided havens turned away these Jewish children when there was danger of them being discovered by either Germans or fellow Poles. The antisemitism of the general Polish population is mentioned many times. For example, these young Jewish people volunteered enthusiastically in the 1944 Warsaw uprising against the Germans. Yet, when they and Gentile Poles were taken to German POW camps as comrades in arms, the Poles taunted and threatened them, once they discovered the Jews in their midst. The Poles even denounced them to their German captors, hoping the Jews would be killed.

I would recommend this book as an interesting adjunct to one's collection of Holocaust testimonies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Boys Surviving in Aryan Warsaw. Insight into Benefactors and Blackmailers
Instead of repeating other reviewers, I focus mainly on barely-mentioned and unmentioned content. The story of the Jewish boys who sold cigarettes in the Polish side of Warsaw is a moving one. The Jewish boys met Polish boys who bullied them, and other Polish boys who protected them. (p. 116). The Jewish boys obtained fake identification (pp. 125-126), probably from the Zegota, a one-of-a-kind Polish organization of aid to Jews (unmatched anywhere in all of German-occupied Europe.)

Polish boys were also involved in trade. (p. 115). In fact, the reader who is interested in a more broad-based analysis of the experiences of both Jewish and Polish children should read Did the Children Cry: Hitler's War Against Jewish and Polish Children, 1939-1945.

Ziemian focuses on the challenges of living in the Polish side of Warsaw: "The street urchins, whose only possessions were their meager clothing, did not attract any special attention from the shmalzers [szmalcowniki](blackmailers who denounced Jews to the Germans) and were therefore in less danger than the adults." (p. 14). When the Jewish boys did experience threats of denunciation to the Germans, it was in order to try to force them to disclose the names and addresses of wealthy fugitive Jews. (pp. 52-53, 64).The fact that the Jewish boys were usually left alone by the blackmailers adds to the contention that most szmalcowniki were not hard-core Jew hunters. Instead, most of them were petty extortionists who did not actually denounce Jews to the Nazis. (See the Peczkis review of Secret City: The Hidden Jews of Warsaw, 1940-1945).

In addition those who actually denounced Jews to the Germans were not limited to Poles. While in Aryan Warsaw, fugitive Jews often ran to each other. Ziemian comments: "Chance meetings between Jews, even among acquaintances, unless they were true friends, usually ended with the words: `Excuse me; I don't know you, you must be mistaken.' and a fast retreat in the opposite direction. Every Jew was afraid of his own shadow." (p. 14). Not mentioned is the fact, noted in other Jewish memoirs, that any "fugitive Jew" could be a Gestapo agent.

Some of the Jewish boys were later involved in the Poles' Warsaw Uprising (1944), and even performed feats of bravery. (p. 155). After the war, many of the Jewish boys, soon to be men, moved to Israel, where many of them led very successful lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars unforgettable book for children
I read this book as a child in Hebrew - it was one of the most powerful books I've ever read as a child. It's a "simple" story of everyday survivel of group of Jewish children - who lived under a Polish identety beyoned the Warsow Getto. The book contains real pictures of those children - in real time - which makes everything "live like" and make the Holocaust "touchable". As a mother - I am buying this book to my children and I hope they will never forget as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars great read
The book The Cigarette Sellers of Three Crosses Square is a great book. When I read it, I was always on edge.It just had so many surprising events; I just did not want to put it down. The book chronicles the survival of a group of orphaned Jewish children in German occupied Poland during WWII.The author, Joseph Ziemian, was a member of the Jewish resistance. He helps the children by getting them false identification papers and money. The children had a very meager and bleak existence, some escaped detection and survived to be liberated, some did not.
This book is best for junior high and up, as there are some graphic scenes.
There are two editions of the book; one published in the seventies and one published in '05.The books are identical except for one thing; the '05 edition has an additional epilogue. It gives an account of what happened to the character in the eleven years since the book was first published.I recommend the '05 edition for this reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars True stories are the best stories.
This book catalogues the experiences of children who survived World War Two.That in itself is a stunning feat. But these weren't just children, these were Jewish children. They escaped from the Warsaw ghetto. The book follows the lives of the Sellers, both while within the ghetto and while they lived beyond it's walls.Being agile, and small, they were able to cross over the border into Gentile Warsaw and forage for food. They would bring the food back to their families, being the sole providers in a world designed not to provide. When the ghetto was liquidated, these children moved as they always had, into the city, but never moved back. The book follows their lives, their exploits and adventures, and their heartbreaks. It is a stunning book, not only for the subject matter, but for it's testament to the human spirit. These children didn't just survive. They lived. ... I AM to depart, you to remain; but which shall have the happier lot, who can tell ? " So spake Socrates to his friends just before he drank the fatal hemlock. In all the utterances of the ancient philosophy there is no sadder word. The uncertainty of the hereafter, the impenetrable gloom that shrouds the state of the departed, sets the contemplative soul shivering with mortal dread. Like the expiring Hobbes, more than two thousand years later, the grand old Athenian felt himself "taking a leap in the dark." In his case, however, there was more excuse than in that of the modern unbeliever. Thedayspring from on high had not yet visited mankind. The morning star was still below the horizon. Four centuries must pass before the rising Sun of righteousness could bring the perfect day. The Christ came, the true Light of the world; and life and immortality, dawning from his manger, culminated upon his sepulchre. Redeeming Love has revealed to us more of God and man than all the sages of antiquity ever knew; and our reviving and ascending Redeemer has shed a flood of radiance upon the grave and whatever lies beyond. In the immortal Christ we have a sufficient answer to the patriarch's question -- "If a man die, shall he live again?" In his mysterio... ... Read more
