3-0 out of 5 stars Limited Access-Missing Details.
The author states that his idea of writing this unathorized biography was fueled by Sheryl Crow's music. That's good motivation.

The Prelude portion of "No Fool To This Game" explores the membership of what was later loosely known as the "Tuesday Night Music Club" and Sheryl Crow's introduction to it. This collection of musicians and the subsequent split is dealt with at some length, but I don't feel that that exposure was dwelt on too much. The "bad blood" did have an impact on the people and careers of those involved.

Mr. Buskin examines Crow's childhood, friends, and musically talented parents. She was a performer at an early age. One of the fascinating friendships examined was that of Don Henley. Henley was a major influence in her career as a supporter and advisor.

The struggle and ultimate failure to release her first album was detailed.

The author also gives details about Sheryl Crow's songs such as where they originated from, who collaborated on them, and what albums they appear on.

This book suffers from the author's limited access to the subject of the book herself. He makes the best of print and videotaped interviews from sources like VH1, and Rolling Stone magazine.
He does a very good job of covering Sheryl Crow from when she became famous as a musical artist to the date of the book's writing.
What's missing are details about her college days and career as a music teacher. This is all information that would be invaluable if it had input from Sheryl Crow herself.
This is an o.k. book until something with more personal insight from Sheryl Crow appears.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too much to expect...
This book is very enjoyable - up until the part dealing with Tuesday Night Music Club. This part easily takes up 2/3 of the book. It also becomes over-informative about the album and its making - there's so many little remarks and infos that really aren't that interesting about the album, and make reading that section tedious.

Everything else in the book relating to the other albums is basically short mentions of them, compared to the TNMC section. Don't expect to learn anything much about the follow-up albums.

In short, I wanted a bio of Sheryl Crow, not a long-winded overdone account of how TNMC was made.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average reading
This is currently the only book about Sheryl Crow in print. In the first chapter, the author, Richard Buskin, states and explains how Sheryl wanted no part in this book. It's easy to see why. While the book is informative, it draws from too many of the same sources. I lost count of the times he quotes VH1's Behind the Music special on her. Not only that, but the text is often very meandering and the author often repeats himself. However there are some interesting accounts of her albums. Like the acclaimed first album that was never released because Sheryl did not like the polished sound of the record, to the behind the scenes turmoil behind her first album TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, in which Sheryl was accused of taking all the credit and giving none to the band. That was the longest part of the book. Next was SHERYL CROW's second album and how she did not want to work with Bill Botrell who she worked with on her first released album. This is when the book became more interesting, because it dealt with where Sheryl became more in control of the type of music she wanted to do and how she wanted to present herself. I enjoyed the story of how the song "The Book" came to be. Next was THE GLOBE SESSIONS, her 1998 album, and how she was having trouble recording the album and finding the right songs, how it was delayed etc. Then he explains about her current album C'MON C'MON and the trouble she suffered during the recording process such as depression, not wanting to record, and everything like that. The book does not talk much about her relationships with Eric Clapton and Owen Wilson. It's not that bad a book but hopefully there will be an autobiography in the future or at least a book written about her with better references and quotes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great effort especially given his limitations
Hope that Mr. Buskin gets an opportunity to write an authorized biography of Ms. Crow.In the introduction, he freely acknowledges that neither she, her family nor her management would speak to him.In spite of this, his book seems to present a pretty balanced account of her career and avoids being sleazy. He provides terrific insight into the record industry and how records and stars are made.Still, I would like to read "the rest of the story...," to hear more from Ms. Crow and her family.Would recommend to book to anyone interested in Ms. Crow and her career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behind the Music......
It's fascinating reading about how my favorite Sheryl Crow songs were birthed into existence. That was my favorite part of the book and Mr. Buskin did a superb job of detailing the history of all of her songs. This is a gripping story of Ms. Crow's rise to fame via determination, hard work and a single-minded ambition to succeed. I came away applauding her tenacity, her talent and her sheer will to survive in the dog-eat-dog music business. If you enjoy Sheryl Crow's music then this book is a must-read for you. You'll come away feeling as if you know her and her music in a deeper way. I highly recommend this well-written book. ... Read more

Product Description
An advice-from-the-trenches cancer survival guidebook for young women with cancer.

Actress and photographer Kris Carr thought she had a hangover, but a Jivamukti yoga class didn't provide its usual kick-ass cure. A visit to her doctor confirmed her "liver looked like Swiss cheese," covered with cancerous tumors. She entered trench warfare (wearing cowboy boots into the MRI machine, no less), vowing, "Cancer needed a makeover and I was just the gal to do it!" She began writing and filming her journey, documenting her interactions with friends, doctors, alternative "quacks," blind dates, and other women with cancer--sadly a growing group. These include hip, young women such as illustrator-author Marisa Acocella Marchetto (Cancer Vixen), Glamour writer-editor Erin Zammett (My So-Called Normal Life), MTV personality Diem Brown (Real World/Road Rules Challenge), model Sharon Blynn (founder, Bald Is Beautiful), and music manager Jackie Farry, among others.

The Learning Channel is broadcasting the premiere of Carr's unforgettable documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer on August 29, 2007 @ 9:00-11:00pm (ET/PT).

CRAZY SEXY CANCER TIPS gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr's own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. Chapters cover your changing social life, dating, sex, and appearance; essential health tips on how to boost your immune system; recipes; medical and holistic resources; and information on young survivor support groups. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars made me smile
Kris Carr's books are a bit irreverent when the world is crashing with a capitol "C" on your body.
I'll keep it simple.Reading her books helped me a lot. And I am sometimes an old curmudgeonella.... old cranky lady.At this point, I take anything that helps me and makes me smile, too. She did it with her book.Thank you, Kris

5-0 out of 5 stars Read! Read! Read!
I received this book in September from a special friend, who also had cancer. At that time when I had just been diagnosed with an aggressive Stage III Cancer and going thru chemo and facing surgery, radiation and nasty odds of a recurrence , THIS WAS THE ONLY THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH!! OUT LOUD!!Didn't matter that she was younger or had different treatment or even if I agreed with her choices (even though I did).I was laughing and during those dark times laughter is the best medicine...kudos to you Kris Carr, can't wait to read the second one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very empowering
Very Empowering book that shows you to do something about your cancer as an alternative of in addition to your standard treatment from the doctor. As bad as your situation may be, you can't help but get postive vibes reading this book. Also so of the tips are very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Therapy
I purchased this book for my sister in law that had just been told she had stage 2 breast cancer. When you have someone close to you that has been diagnosed you really don't know what to say and my niece told me about this book so I immediately ordered it for her.She has since had surgery and everything is good for her and she really appreciated the words that the book said for me.She like everyone else that is diagnosed, was mad, sad and everything in between but reading the book helped her alot and I very much appreciate that to Kris Carr the author of Crazy Sexy Cancer.

1-0 out of 5 stars EZ Edition, NOT the full guitar parts
The low review is as much for false advertising as it is anything else. This is actually decent EZ guitar edition of some nice Sheryl Crow songs, but it IS easy, and its NOT marked as such. While it includes simple and sometimes accurate main riffs and a few licks to songs like "Strong Enough" and "Favorite Mistake", it totally ignores the solos and doesn't even give the real riffs to some (such as "If it Makes You Happy").On top of that, it wastes a lot of space converting the vocal lines to guitar tab. I got it used for $3.93, so it would cost me that much in shipping to send it back. Otherwise I would. Don't get me wrong,if you are a beginning guitarist (like the previous reviewer) and can get it cheap, this might be for you, BUT IT IS AN EASY-GUITAR VERSIONS TYPE BOOK and should be advertised as such. If you are a more experienced guitarist who is trying to get the nuances and difficult bits of Crow's music, save up for the "Very Best of Sheryl Crow" book, which has nearly all the same songs and then some. Its what I'm going to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Sheryl Crow fans!

2-0 out of 5 stars Save $ and Just Use Your Ear!
This book just goes to show how important it is to look for the little "Authentic Transcriptions" stamp that most guitar-book covers display. These transcriptions are downright LAZY, reducing key singles like "Steve McQueen," "Soak Up The Sun," and "C'mon C'mon" to a few composite arrangements and a "recall with variation" markings. Were they afraid they'd run out of room? Nowhere to be found on these three tracks are Crow's outstanding supporting vocals, which ONLY appear on "Weather Channel" and the straight-thirds of "It's So Easy."

I never even stopped to think that a guitar book wouldn't include background vocals or note *SOME* alternate rhythms/patterns upon repeated recall -- in my experience it's unheard of.Then again, so is entirely ignoring the primary electric guitar on the opening track. Go figure. Mid-album rockers "Over You" and "Lucky Kid" seem to have escaped the narcolepsy of their transcriptionist, but don't let the multiple staves fool you: the production of this album is incredibly layered -- if I can find this many problems with it in 48-hours there are surely other missing parts that i just haven't tried to play yet.

This book is a good jumping off point for your own arrangements, and perhaps a wonderful tool for the beginning guitarist, but you can probably find equally competent transcriptions for most of these songs on the internet for free.Save your money! ... Read more

What Are You Most Grateful For?

Ricky Gervais says . . . Pajamas.
I've started wearing pajamas out, because they're more comfortable than trousers. (Laughs) I started out with jeans, then went to sweatpants about ten years ago. Now it's just pajamas. I wore them to the White House. I've gone whole hog.

Dolly Parton says . . . Humble Roots.
I think being brought up dirt poor left with me with a feeling of what it was like to go without, so I can relate when people are having a hard time. In my case, being a songwriter, I'm able to write not only for and about myself, but for what I know other people are feeling, even if they don't always have the means to get their voices heard.

Anne Rice says . . . Clackety-Clack.
My stepmother, who was a very practical, wonderful woman, took me into Dallas before I went into college to buy me a typewriter. She picked out this wonderful little portable one, black and white keys, and it was real fast. I still have it. I won't give it up.

In this enlightening and engaging collection, celebrities from Seth Rogen and Sheryl Crowe to Joyce Carol Oates and B.B. King share the people, places, and things for which they are most grateful. Alternately sentimental and surprising, wise and wacky, these heartfelt "gratitude bucket lists" as described by some of our most beloved artists are sure to inspire readers everywhere to make their own lists--and live their own lives with more love, affection, and thanksgiving. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, a must have!!
When this book came into my life it offered me an inspired, empowered meaning to push me forward in life. This book is priceless and all the stories have an incredible lesson, gift or challenge someone has grown through. They say the definition of success is to model someone who has what you want.I couldn't think of a better book where someone can model successful people and learn from their stories of gratitude.

Todd Jensen, the author is an incredibly talented writer. He is incredibly gifted and for him to have interviewed so many celebrities, marks a huge accomplishment not too many people have been able to reach.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants more in life, anyone who is ready to transform, be grateful, enjoy their journey. It makes a wonderful holiday gift as well!I personally bought ten books and am giving them as gifts to my inner circle!!And planning on buying many more during the holiday season to share with some very special people.

5-0 out of 5 stars My entire family is getting this for Christmas!
There are a lot of self-help books on gratitude out there, but this one takes a much different approach. Instead of feeling all touchy-feely or instructional, it offers insights and personal anecdotes from a wide variety of public figures.

I really loved the approach - It felt like I was reading interesting articles on some of my personal heroes (e.g. Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut), but when I put it down, I actually felt lighter and happier. Fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting positive book!
"On Gratitude" was a great read all the way around. In a time in which all we see on the television and in newspapers are bad news, it is great to pick up a book based solely on positivity and good cheer! The book makes the reader start thinking about what he or she is grateful for in our lives. And makes some of the things we have been whining about seem small.I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting a beautiful read, with a positive outlook upon completion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sessions on how to write songs for the globe
With Sheryl Crow's deeply personal songs printed in front of you, you gain an appreciation for both her musical and lyrical skills. While the intimacy of her lyrics often goes unsung, her musical talents are rarely challenged. The Globe Sessions lets a respecting fan learn from her chord progressions and phrasing and move to create quality music yourself. You can also learn from her frank yet complex lyrics. (Bob Dylan asked HER to sing one of his songs, so her skill is genuine). A must for serious singers and songwriters; a chance to learn from one of the most powerful forces in music right now.

Arthur Scott Bailey (1877-1949) was author of more than forty children's books. Bailey attended St. Albans Academy and graduated in 1896, in a class of only eleven other students. He then went on to the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, where he became involved in a fraternal organization, Sigma Phi. However, he left UVM in 1901 and transferred to Harvard, where he earned his bachelor's degree. In 1904 he travelled to New York City and became an editor for various publishers. Which publishers these were is unknown, with the exception of the Macaulay Company, where he was working in early 1915. Among his most famous works are: Sleepy-Time Tales: The Tale of Frisky Squirrel (1915), Sleepy-Time Tales: The Tale of Peter Mink (1916), Tuck-me-in Tales: The Tale of Jasper Jay (1917), Tuck-me-in Tales: The Tale of Buster Bumblebee (1918), Slumber-Town Tales: The Tale of Henrietta Hen (1921) and Slumber-Town Tales: The Tale of Turkey Proudfoot (1921). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Old already, but it took time to learn all this
I have a Guitar/Vocal Edition with Tablature of this book:SHERYL CROW (1997).The first song in the book, "Ordinary Morning," starts with a Slow blues (dotted quarter note equals 40) 12/8 time (ten measures/minute) vocal line in the key of B, with names of the chords G#m, G, C#, F#, and E7 above the first five measures to indicate the "Harmony implied by bass and keyboard."(p. 5).The guitar tablature finally provides string and fret information for an A7 chord for the final six sixteenth notes (each a quarter of a second long) played on page 5.

This book does not show how to form every guitar chord for every song unless you look at the individual notes in the music and corresponding string and fret numbers in the tablature. On page 12, under the title "If It Makes You Happy," there is a chart showing the 23 fingering for the chord Em and a chart with x321 fingering for a C chord, but an "*" in the opening lines of the song for Gtrs. 1and for Gtr. 3 explains the open G tuning used for the tablature on pages 12-14.C is formed in the early part of the song by using the fifth fret for the middle four strings or the 5 highest strings.Because the fifth string has been tuned down (from A to G), the fingering shown in the chart for the chord Em at the top of page 12 could be used to play the first two eighth notes of an Am chord when the song finally gets to the word "happy" at the beginning of the chorus on page 14, but the second fret is also used for another string on the second beat in the chorus, and the notes which follow suggest the need for other fingers. The Bridge which starts on page 15 has an Em chord and C chord used for Gtr. 2, and the explanation is on the last page of the book."Rhythm Slashes:Strum Indications:Strum with indicated rhythm. The chord voicings are found on the first page of the transcription underneath the song title."(p. 124).The Gtr. 2 at the Bridge must be using standard tuning to form the guitar chords as a typical Gtr. 2 would be following the written names of the chords at the beginning of the song.Gtr. 1 drops out after four measures at the Bridge, but there are notes and Tablature there for Gtr. 4 (Elec.) and Gtr. 5 (Acoustic) playing Riff A "P.M. throughout."(p. 15).The Guitar Tab Glossary by Kenn Chipkin and Aaron Stang on pages 123-124 (copyright 1990 Beam Me Up Music) explains that P.M. means Palm Mute.

Beginners learning music have to acquire mechanical techniques that must be practiced until they seem innate in order to produce a performance which adds elements that seem artistic.Modern recording techniques have allowed fans to become familiar with the most sophisticated performances of pop songs as the modern form of artistic expression, with tremolo, trill, vibrato and staccato being just a few of the techniques that remain from the classical skill set.Bending notes is a guitar trick that can be indicated in this book ranging from Microtone (to the equivalent of half a fret) to a whole step and a half. The slide notes provided by Gtr. 3 in "If It Makes You Happy" don't start until after the vocal line "You get down, real low down."Then Gtr. 3 has eleven eighth notes before its first half note with seven slides between them, but the slides are all between two tones of a pattern that has just three musical tones. After the line "You listen to Coltrane, derail your own train.Well who hasn't been there before?" the slide goes up to a higher set of three tones, but with only four slides for ten notes. At 98 beats per minute, each slide is taking place within three tenths of a second.

People who have the Sheryl Crow CD with these songs can look at the CD to see what the other songs are.I actually like songs that are the easiest to learn. Some of my favorites have a pattern of four chords that repeat throughout the song."Home" shows four chord charts under the title on page 62 and those chords dominate the song and the ending on page 75.Only two additional chords occur in the Bridge on page 68.Finding words might be a problem for people who don't automatically know them well enough to think of the right verse when the music is repeating.Verse 2 appears in eight lines at the bottom of page 75, under the legato slides shown for the last three measures of "Home."Verse 1 has words under the vocal notes on pages 62-64.Once the chorus starts and three guitar parts are shown, there are only four measures on page 64, five measures on pages 66 and 67, six measures on pages 68 and 69, and nine measures on each page 70-72.Words for the vocal part on Verse 3 are under the notes on pages 71-72.Most rock music does not show notes for vocal harmony parts, but the blend on the chorus of "Home" is so important that small notes are shown on pages 64, 65, 66, 70, and 71.The harmony only has four musical tones, but with so much going on, it certainly helps to know what they are and when they change. One person with a guitar can feel great doing this song until it gets to that part, but then what?

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
Sheryl Crow rocks and this music book is great. It's easy to use and understand.I haven't learned all the songs on it, but her songs are so much fun to play and sing along to and having the sheet music for all her songs help. All the guitar parts aren't exactly like hers, but it's real close and still sounds great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent....
Each one of Sheryl's albums are magnificent in their own right, although when this was released it was the better of the first two albums. Each song is class in the first degree.I'm fairly new to guitar playing, but Ifound this tab book allowed me to play along with all of the tracks quitequickly.
