Product Description
Once in a lifetime, a man may find himself in a desperate battle for everything he holds dear. But that all-out war has come twice for John Fortunato. Once for his country -- and now to save his hometown and the woman he loves...

Digger

Twenty-five years ago John Fortunato was a soldier in Vietnam, fighting in the crushing darkness of the tunnels of Cu Chi, from which the Vietcong launched their deadliest operations. When he got back to his hometown of Elk River, Illinois, he secretly re-created those hellish tunnels. Partly a memorial, partly a kind of exorcism, they now lie hidden beneath the town's peaceful streets. John traded his M-16 rifle for a Nikon camera and built a career as a successful photographer. He thought he had put the war and the bloodshed behind him, but a powerful new enemy has other plans for John Fortunato.

On a quiet April night, Fortunato witnesses the brutal sidewalk shooting of an innocent man. The vicious crime is but the first assault in a struggle that will erupt into a full-scale battle for control of Elk River, a struggle that will divide neighbors and tear families apart. On one side is a tough, beautiful labor lawyer; on the other is a man who will stop at nothing to control the entire town. And on the front line is John Fortunato, whose secret tunnels will provide the battleground for his own war, a war that revives the killing grounds of Cu Chi in a way he could never have imagined.

From the terrible intimacy of tunnel combat below the steaming jungles of Vietnam, to the brutal battles on the streets of the American heartland, to the unyielding courage of a man and woman prepared to sacrifice everything to make a dream come true, Digger is a harrowing story that breaks all the rules.Amazon.com Review
Ideas and plot gimmicks explode like land mines in thisinnovative thriller about a Vietnam vet who recreates the tunnelswhere so many of his buddies died under the streets of his Illinoishometown. From this unique perspective, John Fortunato watches thestart of another war--a struggle for the control of a local laborunion. Mix Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest with TheX-Files (Fortunato has paranormal powers of perception when he'sunderground)--and you'll get some idea of how original this conceptis, especially in the current thriller market. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Small Town War
One review was titled "Total Dude Book" and while men that like this genre will probably like this book, so will women who like action & adventure novels.

When John came back from fighting in Vietnam, he started working on building a tunnel in Elk Grove, as small town in Illinois. After his friends, Darien and Gil returned they joined him. Each vet had had another reason that just the common thread that joined most vets together, they had left the war, but the war had not left them. They often joked, saying they were trying to exorcise or exercise their demons.

Darien also felt safer in his tunnel than anywhere else. For Gil, it was his way of remembering the glory of being an elite soldier.John's reason was the guilt over his best buddy being killed and not bringing his body back. They were the only three that new of their underground masterpiece.
Flynn does a great job of blending the town's story, their story, and the labor struggle in short, easy to read chapters. There is a lot of violence, but it doesn't make the story any worse.

I have enjoyed all of Flynn's books and my only complaint is that there are not enough of them. The book could have been better if the charcter had been drawn better. For that reason I would rate this book 4 1/2.(I wish Amazon would put stars that you could fill in 1/4 increments.IMHO, it would help the rating system be more accurate).

4-0 out of 5 stars NEVER A DULL MOMENT
I have had this book for quite a while & was not in the mood to read it. So there it was when I needed something "different." I didn't expect much so was very surprised that it was so entertaining, full of action & never a dull moment. One of the reviews said it was "a man's book." Not true, although I seldom read "chick books" I don't read many of this type. Now I am at Amazon looking for other books by this author. He did a great job withthe action scenes, pretty good love scenes that weren't too long & overly descriptive. He needs to develope his characters more but did fairly well here. Very nice job in all & I hope his other books are as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one great book
I read this book many years ago and remembered how much I loved it... I have a friend who is a book lover and I went to BAM to buy it... Wow.. I couldn't believe they did not have it... I really enjoyed this book and learned alot that I didn't know about tunnell rats... Actually i was talking at work about this book and learned that i was working with someone whowas a tunnell rat back in the korean war....Did you know you had to be short to be a tunnell rat? Well I'm gald I found this book.I'm going to buy it and read it again , then pass it on...

4-0 out of 5 stars Total Dude Book
If you are in the mood for a type of book that is like the typical summer guy movies, this is the book for you. I think the average body count per chapter was 5. I can't remember the last time I read a book that had so many people killed. Also, the whole tunnel system under the town is an interesting idea that every man dreamed of in their youth. Yes, there are some definitive aspects of the book that force you to ignore logic but I didn't mind. Overall, a fun romp totally intended for guys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great adventure
Fast paced adventure novel. Has the same type of feeling as Die Hard, but the villian isn't as good as Hans. Great fun to read. ... Read more

If you will refer to the time-table of the D. R. & G. Railway you will find that the station of Chargrove is marked with a character dagger ([Picture: Character dagger]), meaning that trains stop there only to let off passengers or, when properly signaled, to let them on. Mary Louise, during the journey, had noted this fact with misgivings that were by no means relieved when she stepped from the sumptuous train and found before her merely a shed-like structure, open on all sides, that served as station-house. ... You will like Mary Louise because she is so much like yourself. Mrs. Van Dyne has succeeded in finding a very human girl for her heroine; Mary Louise is really not a fiction character at all. Perhaps you know the author through her Aunt Jane's Nieces stories; then you don't need to be told that you will want to read all the volumes that will be written about lovable Mary Louise. Mrs. Van Dyne is recognized as one of the most interesting writers for girls to-day. Her success is largely due to the fact that she does not write DOWN to her young readers; she realizes that the girl of to-day does not have to be babied, and that her quick mind is able to appreciate stories that are as well planned and cleverly told as adult fiction.
