Sanello draws back the curtain that Tom Cruise has pulled over his life to expose the man, not the manufactured image. Based on exhaustive research and interviews with Cruise's closest associates--and a personal interview with Cruise--this biography explores the painful and dramatic events that propelled a lonely child into a star, and provides behind-the-scenes details about his movies and his two marriages. 1-0 out of 5 stars Does unauthorised mean "just make it up"?
I can't believe it!If you're going to write a book about someone you think they'd check the facts!Frank Sanello must not know much about Tom Cruise - first of all he had him down as the lead in Endless Love(including a photo of 'not Tom Cruise' with Brooke Shields. There were alsopics of Tom with Rebecca DeMornay in All the right moves (wasn't that RiskyBusiness? ). This is just the start and I could go on - but I won't it'srubbish....he made up stuff to fill the pages....a non-fiction book ismeant to be just that!I'm sure I could find plenty of other Tom Cruisebooks that will actually give me the facts... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Style over substance, and poor style at that
Early in his career, Tom Cruise developed a cocky, in-your-face persona that he used in film after film.
He played the cocky unlikable fighter pilot, the cocky unlikable bartender, the cocky unlikable NASCAR driver and the cocky unlikable pool hustler in movies that were limited by his character. Even in films that were saved by the superior performances of others - such as Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man", or Paul Newman in "The Color of Money"- Tom still played the cocky unlikable character.

With a handful of bizarre public appearances, he developed a nearly universal reputation, Sloane Crosley wrote in Village Voice, as "one spoke behind Michael Jackson on the freak wheel."

This is his cocky fighter pilot movie.

I see one five-star review after another on this page praising the blu-ray version of this film, in particular the audio.I am not reviewing a blu-ray experience - only the film - and I have to say that no soundtrack could make a silk purse from this sow's ear.

As in many Cruise films, supporting parts are excellently cast and performed: here by pre-bald Anthony Edwards as Goose and pre-famous Meg Ryan as Mrs. Goose and Kelly McGillis as Top Gun instructor and love interest and Tom Skerritt as a Navy Commander who looks and sounds like a real Navy Commander.Val Kilmer is more sympathetic than Cruise's character as his competing fighter pilot, Iceman.

Aside from the just plain tediousness of the umpteenth iteration of Cruise's cocky-unlikable personna, the film panders shamelessly to the lowest, most testosterone-driven machismo. An attempt is made to humanize Cruise's "Maverick" as Skerritt's character confides in Maverick that he knew his father back when he heroically saved three other planes in a dogfight "on the wrong side of the line of some map."This make's Maverick's father heroic, perhaps, but doesn't for a moment justify Maverick repeatedly crossing the line as an I'm-too-cool-to-follow-the-rules Hot Shot.

In a telling scene Iceman confronts Maverick after a flight:

Iceman: You two really are cowboys.
Maverick: What's your problem, Kazanski?
Iceman: You're everyone's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air, you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous.
Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous.

And by the normal structure of movies the audience is supposed to think (and millions of brainless testosterone-driven men DID think) "yeah! You tell him, Maverick!" and the structure of the film, I guess, is that you're supposed to view Iceman as the villain?I put a question mark on what should be a statement, because the character of Maverick is WAY on the "wrong side of the line".Heroism and bravery and the ability to think creatively outside the box are still desirable characteristics in the military and in the human race, but in the military I've known for nearly 30 years carelessly risking your life, the lives of others and millions of dollars of government property doesn't make you a hero - it makes you the subject of courts-martial.

I almost recommend the film only to watch Skerritt and Edwards and Ryan - she made her mark in the minds of millions in scenes such as the one where she orders Goose "take me to bed, or lose me forever!"It's just too bad that the leading character of the film is cocky and unlikable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Gun on Blue Ray
We have not yet watched this because it is a Christmas gift for my husband and he does not know about it.The rating is for the service I received, it was great.Helga Brayton

4-0 out of 5 stars "80's Classic!"
Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis star in Tony Scott's 1986 action film.
A fighter pilot romances an instructor and loses his best friend in
an accident. This is definitely one of Tom's best and I'm glad to
have this 2-disc set that not only has nice picture and sound,
but cool extras. I highly recommend this 80's classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars TOP GUN - Blu-Ray
I saw TOP GUN in the theater, owned it on VHS & DVD, this blu-ray I just bought for $10.00 is no doubt the best I've seen and heard. I love this movie even more now than ever before. What really amazed me is how great the surround audio is, the audio on DVD disappointed me big time and thank goodness, this blu-ray made up for it, what a superb upgrade even with the video. I love the aerial and F-14 shots, Tony Scott really made a magnificent job with it, in my opinion, along with the great surround sound, it makes you feel like you're sitting right there inside that cockpit. I love this blu-ray and I highly recommend it, it will make a great addition to your movie library. Thank you, Paramount, for giving this movie the superb upgrade it deserves.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is supposed to be high definition????
I'm going to get right to the point. First off this is a great movie especially if the F-14 is your favorite aircraft. However the picture looks the same as it did when I used to watch this on a 19" inch TV in the late 80's on a rented VHS tape. Paramount should be ashamed, this is not even close to 720 let alone 1080. I have old DVD's that offer a better picture in the bluray player then this. Yes it does have a cool menu but the picture is NOT high-Def and the sound is only acceptable when you put the setting on 6.1 DTS Master (only reason I gave 2-stars). If you do not have a good external speaker system do not waste your money because the picture and the sound won't be worth it. ... Read more

Product Description

For over two decades, Michelangelo Signorile has been among the most outspoken and controversial critics of American politics and culture. As a gay activist and journalist, he earned acclaim as the father of the "outing" phenomenon. Today, he remains one of the most widely read and talked about gay muckrakers. In Hitting Hard (Signorile's first new book since his national bestseller, Outing Yourself), the author tackles the most heated topics of debate among gay people and the political left.

4-0 out of 5 stars Signorile does it again.
I have a great deal of admiration and respect for this man.I think he is intellectually honest and pulls no punches.Always enjoy his take on topics and people he writes about.

5-0 out of 5 stars National treasure
Once again, Michele Signorile has put out a collection of articles that express -- clearly, elegantly, wittily and pertinently -- the best thinking on gay issues being thought today. With Larry Kramer and a few others, he has been the voice of sane homosexuality for quite some time, saying things that should long ago not have needed to be said -- but wow! the attention span does seem to get shorter every day. I hope, therefore, that he will continue to say them as often and as copiously as he deems necessary, and for many years to come. I most seriously urge every gay man in America (and elsewhere too) to read him and to LISTEN. He really knows what he is talking about --and there are truly not many men around these days, in any sphere, about whom one can say the same! I do not know him, but I love him. He is a national treasure. Long may he flourish. I eagerly await his every article and his next book.

"My mother and my father did not tell me the name of Tom Cruise; neither my grandma. First, my parents weren’t rich. They were farmers all their lives. Second, I was born in a poor village; life was always hard beyond comprehension.

--Afantastic journey from the East to the West; an inspirational story about American Dreams. It’s the ultimate expression about Love, Dream and Hope. It reveals the totality of possibilities ofhuman potential.

How do we Americans review this original piece of art from an international transplant from China? How do we judge her own feelings and emotions towards this developed country called America? And what can we learn from this poor Chinese girl’s unique vision and perspective? And how Americais going to acceptanother “ The Cather in the Rye” which’s going to shake its own culture?

Well, you have to read the book, andbe prepared to allow your mind blown away.

According to Wikipedia, "Tom Swift is the young protagonist in several series of juvenile adventure novels which began in the early twentieth century and continues to the present. Each such series stars a hero named Tom Swift who is a genius inventor and whose breakthroughs in technology (especially transport technology) drive the plots of the novels, placing them in a genre sometimes called "invention fiction" or "Edisonade". ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography is a biography of actor Tom Cruise, written by Andrew Morton. The book was published in the United States in hardcover format on January 15, 2008 by St. Martin's Press, with a first printing of 400,000 copies, and an audio format on five CDs by Macmillan Audio.Cruise's lawyers and the Church of Scientology have released several statements which question the truthfulness of assertions made by Morton in the book. In an official 15-page statement released to the press, the Church called the book "a bigoted, defamatory assault replete with lies". The book was not published in the UK or New Zealand[7] due to strict libel laws in those countries. Although initially not published in Australia, it was later published there and became popular. ...
