Product Description

Tommy is twenty-nine, lives and loves in London, and has a morbid fear of the c word (commitment), the b word (boyfriend), and the f word (forgetting to call his drug dealer before the weekend). But when he begins to feel the urge to become a father, and the pressure from his boyfriend to make a real commitment to their relationship, Tommy starts to wonder if his chosen lifestyle can ever make him happy.

Faced with the choice of maintaining his hedonistic, drugged-out, and admittedly fabulous existence or chucking it all in favor of a far more sensitive, fulfilling, and -- let's face it -- slightly more staid lifestyle, Tommy finds himself in a true quandary. Through a series of adventures and misadventures that lead him from London nightspots to New York bedrooms and back, our boy Tommy manages to answer some of life's most pressing questions -- even those he never thought to ask.

Amazon.com Review
In his debut novel Tommy's Tale, Alan Cumming writes like thelove child of Nick Hornby and Dan Savage. His protagonist, Tommy, anE-popping, pansexual Londoner, reads like one of Hornby's won't-grow-upurban Peter Pans. The plot, of course, lies in seeing these charactersdragged kicking and screaming into adulthood. Tommy eventually follows this story arc, but with a lot of absolutely filthy sex thrown in along the way--that's where the Dan Savage factor comes into play. Like that august columnist, Tommy never met a sex act he didn't want to a) engage in, and b) describe in lifelike detail. Aside from his sexcapades, Tommy spends his time hanging out with his sort-of boyfriend Charlie, working as a photographer's assistant, taking drugs, and creating a bohemian dream flat with his beloved roommates. His life is about fun until he finds himself growing attached to Charlie's 8-year-old son Finn. As a result of this relationship, he develops an itch to have a kid of his own, and the rest of this hyperkinetic, diaristic novel is devoted to that pursuit. Unfortunately, Tommy is a narrator utterly without a filter--he just natters on and on about whatever enters his head. At best, this style is chatty. At worst, it's out-and-out logorrhea. As an actor and a screenwriter, Alan Cumming is a dizzyingly sophisticated, gleefully ironic, and achingly sentimental force. Alan Cumming as an author is, well, not. --Claire Dederer ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good
I was very excited about this book, as I adore Alan Cumming beyond all reason. But the book is...not so good. It's not entirely terrible, but it is very disappointing.I'm very glad that I picked it up at a thrift store for a couple of bucks, rather than buying it new.

I just don't really care about what happens to the characters - not even our main character/narrator feels even remotely sympathetic, and I just can't bring myself to feel invested in his life. The writing itself isn't too bad - but I also wouldn't call it good.Descriptions and dialogue are often trite or forced, and beyond that the writing is simply unspectacular.

But worst of all, despite all the sex and drugs, it's just plain boring. You'd think with all this drama and depravity going on, it would at least be titillating or exciting, but it's just not.I basically had to force myself to finish it, slogging along for nearly 300 pages.

I wanted to love this book, really I did, but it just doesn't work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boy grows up
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Tommy's Tale; I especially liked the very lively, chatty and informal writing style. The story as told by Tommy centres mainly on a period of a few weeks in which the narrator finally comes to the realisation that, approaching the age of thirty, he needs to change his boyish ways and accept responsibility, and that includes deciding if he should settle with his forty year old boyfriend Charlie (and his boyfriend's lovable son Finn). He has help in the form of his two faithful flat mates, Bobby and Sadie. This is a very funny and warm story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Cumming is the man!
If your an Alan Cumming fan and like sassy, sexy wit, than you will love this book. I have bought it 3 times as gifts because everyone has to read it at some point in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tommy's Fairy Tales
I thought this a particularly fun book to read for spare time, and also because it's by the great actor Alan Cumming.

Once upon a time, there lived a boy named Tommy. Tommy lived in London with his friends. He had relationships and conflicts. Between his relationships, he soon had the urge to have a child of his own. But between the conflicts, this was not all too easy.

A couple of my favorite things about this book is the random fairy talechapters about certain subjects and Tommy's rules for certain things. {For example, water, drugs, depression, etc}. Tommy also spends a lot of time taking showers and thinking to himself in the process. I like the way he describes things where he is and what he's thinking about when it comes to meeting new people in new places, such as New York. Alan Cumming is a very good novelist and I hope he writes another book later on. I don't mean to brag, but this novel is well worth reading. Whether you like Alan Cumming or it just looks interesting {which were my reasons for getting it}, you should read it sometime. It doesn't necessarily have a plot, then again, it does because of Tommy's relationships and how it all goes with his friends and all that jazz. Even though this book might not quite be for everyone, it's pretty good for it's pizzazz of Tommy's occasional silly rules and fairy tale chapters about separate people in separate "worlds" who have their own special, odd hobbies ...and so on. Not only are Tommy's rules cool, but they are actually also helpful if you ever find yourself in need of any related case in the category. Alan Cumming really makes it all worthwhile to take some time to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tale of a Tommy
Hi. I am a great fan of Alan Cumming, so when I heard he wrote a novel, I had to read it, so I got it from the library and now I'm buying it. Don't think my love for him prejudices my opinion of the book, though. It really is a masterpiece. Any psychologist or druggie alike would love this book. It goes into the head of a truly "true" guy and brings you into a different world. The name is perfect, it is really Tommy's Tale. It's amazing and people should read it. However, keep in mind that you must be prepared for it. I know there are plenty of people who wouldn't understand it at all. That's okay, though; there's always those people. Read it. If you don't get it, just leave it alone. You either will someday or have already passed that point. I love it, but liking it probably isn't really the point. Read it. ... Read more

Product Description

With more than one million people currently infected and half a million already dead, the U.S. ranks among the top ten most severe AIDS epidemics in the world. Americans should know more about the current state of the epidemic so they can protect themselves and demand that the government act responsibly to reduce the danger of HIV in this country. Hunter exposes the ways in which the U.S. shamefully resembles a developing country, and the many fronts on which the government has failed to control the spread of the disease. In this startling book, she also shows what we must do to change the future of AIDS.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book lacks scholarship
While earning rave reviews from Donald Trump (forward) and Alicia Keys (front cover), this book fails to get my vote. Don't get me wrong, I am not a christian fundamentalist responding to Ms. Hunter's assertion that Republicans and the Cristian right are spreading HIV/AIDS in America. Rather I am a public health professional responding to the lack of scholarship in this work.

Ms. Hunter repeats results from many studies to back up the claims she makes, but fails to adequately cite these studies. When she does cite a study often does not go into enough detail to allow one to interpret the results. For example, she talks about a study that says 80% of prostitutes have contemplated suicide, but does not say what percent of people in general contemplate suicide.

Sometimes she just doesn't understand the scientific information she reports. She says " Sexual arousal in the vaginal wall decrease the pain threshold 50 percent, while orgasm reduces it 100 per cent". Of course, if this were true stimulation would make women more susceptible to pain, and orgasm would mean pure agony. I do think that Ms. Hunter meant "increases", if not,I advise her to find a new sex partner.

My only consolation is that I checked this book out from the library and I did notwaste my money on it, only my time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emerging AIDS Pandemic Given Necessary Spotlight in Highly Personalized Book
Even with the majesty of the recent HBO production of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" still fresh in our collective psyches, it is astounding how this plague continues to spread unabated. In fact, it seems to be going undercover yet again at a time when a new surge of HIV is most definitively on its way. The palpable danger of HIV/AIDS comes to searing life in medical anthropologist Susan Hunter's blistering book, the third she has tackled on this subject (the first two dealing with the AIDS epidemics in Africa and Asia). While she can get somewhat didactic, her points are well supported, the most significant being that our social, political, and economic systems have been deeply compromised by fundamentalist Christian doctrine.

The statistics are shocking yet inevitable once it becomes clear how half-hearted efforts have been to thwart the disease. According to the Center for Disease Control, between 2002 and 2003, the U.S. experienced a surge in new HIV infections and crossed the million milestone in 2005. Yet, it's the human face that Hunter brings to AIDS that makes her book resonate as deeply as it does. She has developed a heartbreaking narrative primarily derived from extensive interviews she held with Tom and Paige Swanberg of Billings, Montana and their families. Through Tom's infection, they become the vehicle by which we recognize the intractable connection points among the various religious, political, economic, and social forces that have actually increased the number of AIDS cases here.

While the personal impact of the Swanbergs highlights both strengths and weaknesses in character that Hunter documents in moving detail, there is also the not-so-startling revelation of an enormous and fatally flawed political system and medial infrastructure dictated by ignorance and presumptive thinking. The exploitation of the epidemic has been sadly seen by some as an excuse to manifest their greed and allow the public to live in fantasy about the current state of disease. What has resulted is a shift in the chief demographic of HIV/AIDS from an exclusively male populace toward the perceived fringes, specifically teenagers who are too young to know about the first outbreak in the 1980's and aging baby boomers who think they are part of a pre-AIDS generation. In fact, one of the most poignant stories in the book is about Susan Howe, a sixty-year-old Pittsburgh activist infected ten years ago in a brutal rape.

As always, there is the prevalent perception that AIDS is the disease of gays and addicts, and the government is more than willing to support this misconception to support their own agenda. The newest victims, according to Hunter, have been deliberately provided with misinformation, and once infected, they become promptly ignored by the system that s supposed to help them. Tom's story, in particular, is a much-needed wake-up call about the importance of discriminating behavior and self-protection.

Hunter does provide hope through examples found in other parts of the world, specifically Brazil's efforts to arrest the spread of AIDS worldwide. In deciding to provide medical treatment for all those infected with HIV, Brazil apparently prevented at least half of the new infections projected for 2002. This was done at a cost of less than $100 million spent on producing free AIDS drugs from 1997 to 2001 and translated into a savings of $1 billion in medical costs. The author leaves the reader a sense of hope even within a seemingly insurmountable barrier against political mobilization. Her book provides an indispensable light into a long, dark tunnel. ... Product Description
There is growing interest in the role schools can play in contributing to area regeneration. Schools serving disadvantaged areas are encouraged to be outward looking, to engage with families and communities and to coordinate their efforts with those of other agencies. At the same time, however, schools are required to maintain a relentless focus on their 'core business' of teaching and learning in order to drive up pupils' attainments. This report explores the ways in which schools serving two economically and socially disadvantaged urban areas have attempted to resolve this dilemma. It focuses on the relationship between the schools and their respective communities and on outcomes in terms of individual and community development.Drawing on interviews with a wide range of 'stakeholders' and on school performance data, the report: builds up a picture of how staff and community members view the schools' involvement in regeneration; outlines different models of schools' roles in relation to regeneration; analyses the difficulties, successes and failures schools experience in taking on a wider role; and discusses the policy implications and makes recommendations for future policy and practice. The report has important messages for all professionals, community leaders and politicians serving disadvantaged areas. It will be of particular interest to headteachers, school governors, LEA officers, local authority regeneration officers and others who wish to explore the educational contribution to the neighbourhood renewal agenda. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Love Roald Dahl, but this is not for young children.
I knew little beforehand about Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts. Being a huge fan of Roald Dahl, it sounded great. I was listening to it before letting students listen to it, and regrettably, I don't think I will be letting students listen to it. There are some words, while probably fine several years ago, are not appropriate anymore. While I love the rhymes in these stories myself, my students will not be hearing them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the little ones
Wonderfully read by Alan Cumming, with the typical Dahl sense of humor, cruel as usual, but very funny. In case your kids are fed up with the happy endings of fairy tales, this is just the right CD to give to them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Night is too Long
This movie was filled with romance and suspense. It keeps you guessing until the end. Did he love him or did he not?
It is a movie you can never get tired of watching, because it leaves you wanting answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't belive it!!!
I almost can't believe that this story is so great. It's an amazing story, with incredible characters. You enjoy every aspect of this journey. I live in Mexico and my profession is literature related, and this completely blows my mind. I completely recommended. Besides, the service is very fast. Amazon never disappoints me.

3-0 out of 5 stars atmospheric twists
I was really intrigued by this book, the use of voice and mood are superb! and the plot twists and turns that keep you reading and anticipating. I also LOVED that it was and authentic main character an that sexuality is explored so intelligently AND described in such a way that makes you feel it with them! Vine/Rendall is a great writer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and Compelling
This dense elaborately plotted book is perhaps the best I've read by Rendell/Vine, and that's saying a lot.A bit deus ex machina in places, but the characters are so finely and richly portrayed, and I became so emotionally involved in the plot, I didn't care. The settings, particularly that of Alaska, are also wonderfully drawn. Highest recommendation to anyone who loves a good mystery novel that also holds its own as quality mainstream fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Twist on a Love Story
I have read most of Ruth Rendell's books written as Ruth Rendell, but this is my first one written as Barbara Vine.I don't really know why I waited this long.Perhaps I didn't want to be disappointed because I love Ms. Rendell's writing so much (especially the Inspector Wexford series).Well, I wasn't disappointed with this book, and intend to read all the others.Although this book is darker than the Ruth Rendell books, it is possible to tell that they are written by Ms. Rendell. She is a wonderful author, and her plotting and characterizations are really good. This book is also a little different because it is a love story when all is said and done, but there is the characteristic Rendell twist at the end of the book. The book is also different because everything in it is narrated, so we read about everything "second-hand" so to speak. But that doesn't kill the tension.I find it strangely kept the tension going tighter and tighter as we read through Tim's narrative. We are front and centre for love, death, fear, superstition and hate.Powerful emotions! ...
