5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BOOK
I LIKED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. BEAUTIFUL PICTURES OF MR. CURTIS' PAINTINGS.
GOOD EXPLANATIONS OF LIGHT AND ATMOSPHEAR.WOULD HAVE LIKED SOME VISUAL DEMONSTRATIONS .

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book.
I first saw this book in the library and was so impressed with it that I just had to purchase a copy for myself. David Curtis has a truly wonderful ability to paint beach scenes with such startling clarity that I enjoy looking at them all so much. His work with oils is brilliant and this book has to be in any painter's collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars The long and short of it
Capturing the Moment in Oils....by David Curtis is a lush, lovely book depicting the painter's beautifully executed oils.Certainly he knows his stuff when it comes to painting, but this book, unlike his previous one, is woefully short on showing the painting process and long on descriptions of place and thinking.I was truly disappointed that there weren't demonstrations and sequential photos of at least a few of the paintings in progress.Buyers should know that this is more of a coffee table book than a treatise for the artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INSPIRING, but more a practical guide than a typical art instruction book
I admire Mr. Curtis mastery of outdoor painting, and it wasn't long before I decided to get this book. Strong compositional sense and an incredible ability to convey the light and mood of the subject in a realistic yet painterly manner would define his style. He paints "on the spot" but may occasionally complete a painting in the studio, while still retaining a spontaneous quality.

With the title "Capturing the Moment in Oils" one would expect a book about alla prima painting and indeed, the instruction has a lot to do with different plein-air settings and the "one-hit" brushstroke approach (with no subsequent modification) that Curtis shares with other Masters like Richard Schmid. The downside is that the author doesn't go much into detail about the fundamentals (values, edges, color...well, mileage is important too) that are needed to get this "one-hit brushstroke" right. And you must be warned: this book has little information about how a beginner can get started, nor does it feature any picture of the artist materials or him while painting. Just his paintings, mostly landscapes and seascapes ones, which IMO gives the book a nice sober look. It's quite short of step-by-steps too. If you rely on the product description from the publisher, you may be in for a surprise.

The text still has a lot of useful and interesting insights; it features a nice discussion about how to start a painting and it even deals with glazing, which the artist considers as an additional tool to succeed in achieving the results you're aiming for. I do enjoy benefiting from Curtis expert guidance and read about his own ways of approaching things; you just need to know that the instruction is not as focused and thorough as it could have been...no big deal; still very useful as I said before. Overall, this is a good practical guide about David Curtis equipment and how he uses it in the course of a painting. In fact, this book reminds me a lot of his watercolor book, which I also recommend nonetheless for its gorgeous gallery of moody watercolors.

To sum up, I would say that the Art generously displayed in this book is masterful and highly inspirational but if you are completely new to painting, you may need a more thorough basic instruction. Anyway, the book is very pleasant to flip through and is worth buying solely for the artwork. It is a great addition to the serious landscape painter library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection for family reading
This collection of legends is designed for school aged children to read alone, or for parents to read aloud. The tales are authentic Hawaiian folklore, not "disneyfied," touristy or cute -- but they are short, simply written, and child-friendly. Reading them aloud gives you a real sense of the power of storytelling... my seven-year-old sits spellbound, big-eyed and entranced, for tale after tale.I'm very impressed and pleased with the book. ... Invaluable workbook to help GPs and practice staff meet the requirements of continuing professional development (cpd)

General practitioners, like all other health professionals, need to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in medicine and education. They also need to respond to changing technology and changes in the delivery of care. The environment in which GPs work is extremely dynamic but this book helps to keep GPs up-to-date with these advancements and with their professional skills.

The Chief Medical Officer in the UK has recommended that the key to professional development is a Practice Professional Development Plan (PPDP) which, in turn, helps set objectives for individual GPs, the Personal Development Plan.

This workbook takes the mystery out of professional development by explaining how to use existing information to analyse strengths and weaknesses, priorities and needs, and to develop a plan that will improve working life on all levels and leading ultimately to improved patient care.

This book provides tangible methods for how to implement an abstract concept that is being foisted on busy professionals - a must read for every GP in the UK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book made me laugh(very hard), stare in shock, and almost cry. This comic book was unlike anything I have ever seen before. It immedietly hooks you in with its teenage humor and zest. If you buy this book I can promise it will not be a let down. The characters are very funny, well written/drawn. A definite five stars from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A silly trip into the younger side of DC
While SUperman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the JLA seem to hog a lot of the DC spot light, we sometimes forget about the younger side of the DC world.Granted Robin continuaously teams wiht BAtman and we more often than not see Superboy help out Superman, but what about the other protoges that include Impulse, WOnder Girl, and Arrowette. This novel focus on these teen heroes as well as the return of Red Tornado and the joining of a rescued MEta human from a previouse Novel, Secret.

The book starts off with Robin, Superboy, and Impulse just hanging at the former JLA HQ when they meet a retired Red Tornado. From there the story leads to their battles with a young Mxplyx, Desparos ghost, rescuing meta human children, and facing off against their most dangerouse (and short lived) villian Harm.

The book features cool action that you would see in any DC story, but also features comical moments as RObin is as serioue as his mentor Batman (to the point he won't even reveal who he really is) Superboy is running on Hormones as he falls for Arrowette and inadvertadly makes Wodner Girl Jealouse, and Impulse is so childish and silly that one can't help but laugh.

Overall this is a really silly yet action packed novel that is fun to read and loaded with laughs and suspense.I would recomend this to any DC fan or any one in need of some cheesey fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Smells Like Teen Spit
I went into this expecting something funny and fantastic- Peter David being the genius behind the best novels of the Star Trek series, a phenomal run on The Incredible Hulk, and the longtime scribe of Captain Marvel- and I emerged, horribly dissapointed, from the burnt-out wreckage of this train accident of a graphic novel.

Reading this tripe is like being a teenager all over again: a grinding headache, an overwhelming urge to roll your eyes and a complete and utter contempt for your fellow human being sets in after less then five pages.

The characters are flat, the jokes revolve almost entirely around bad puns and are altogether lame, moments of angst are forced and uncomfortable to read, and out of four primary villains only one is actually defeated by this 'super-team'and not some other character or lucky circumstance.

The one shining moment in the whole book is a story taken, not from the series, but from the Young Justice Secret Files one-shot and is written and drawn by D. Curtis Johnson and Ale Garza, respectively. In this issue Robin and Superboy do not sport interchangeable faces, Arrowette is not an annoying priss who turns to submissive mush whenever she gets around a super-male and the story is actually engaging. I was dissapointed when this secton was over because it meant I had to go back to slogging through David's unfathomably bad mire.

For a decent read about teen superheroes try graphic novels of Marv Wolfman and Georege Perez's run on the New Teen Titans, Claremont's stint on Uncanny X-men, or (And believe me, it pains me to say this) even the Brandon Choi, J. Scott Campbell incarnation of Gen13, at the very least you'll enjoy the art.

As for Peter David, please don't let this sour you on his work. His talent is enormous and I'd like to think of this as just a minor misstep; spend your money on one of his great paperbacks or on any other of his graphic novels instead. I'd hate to think anyone passed on other highly entertaining works just because this drivel tainted their perspective.

3-0 out of 5 stars a cool new comic featuring the young heros of dc.
{MAJOR SPOILERS} a enjoyable comic, that at first has just id, ego and superego, fighting evil werever it lurks and soon the girls join in. I liked the story of "harm". a teenager who plans to be the worlds greatest super villan, and belive it or else, he is pretty stong, fast, and smart. his dad is forced to shot him, which is pretty bad because he was a cool villan.

this gets only three stars because robin is out of charicter, {he's smart but not THIS smart} and because the parent/teacher conference is just unreal. {wonder girl and arrowette's moms, nightwing for robin, dubbilex for superboy and max mercury for impulse.

heros: robin, superboy, impulse, arrowette, secret, wonder girl, superman, batman, wonder woman, martian manhunter, aquaman, flash, green lantern, max mercury, nightwing, oracle, supergirl {mentioned}, dubbilex, green arrow {illusion}, red tornado.

villans: harm, despero, mr. myxzptlk, tora, rip roar, mighty endowed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This book is, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining comics I've ever read.It starts with Superboy, Robin, and Impulse having a sleepover in the JLA's old headquarters.Impulse, being the annoying flitterbug that he is, manages to awaken the long-dormant Red Tornado with extreme annoyance.Red Tornado, previously withdrawn from his lost humanity, agrees to serve as the supervisor to the new team. While on a routine mission, the boys uncover a celestial piece of technology, dubbed, much to Impulse's annoyance, the "Supercycle" not only does this intelligent device transform an archeologist into a twisted being calling herself "Mighty Endowed" (to which Superboy applaudes) it also happens to belong to a now-free New God.Abound with teen-humor, the boys eventually allow three girls into their team, Secret, Arrowette, and Wonder Girl. The kids sound like real kids, they act like real teenagers, (well, except maybe for Robin) and respond like normal teenages to the dreaded words of "Parent/Teacher Conference."On the whole, this book is a MUST BUY.So WHY did I give it only FOUR stars?Well, the fact is, though it mostly maintained continuity, there is a gaping hole in the time that they obtained Secret. They don't go into it at all, which is pretty bad considering that theyjust deleted like four issues.Lastly, some of the plot themes are a tad on the banal side. The battle with Tora, the woman who runs with the bulls, not too mention their conflict with Mr. Mxytplk is very funny, but lacking a bit in content. So, if you like superpowered-teens, BUY THIS BOOK!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized and Unfocused
I bought this book on a whim because my husband said he liked the layout.Sure, it would seem nice to have a book that lays out your pregnancy week by week, but that isn't exactly what this book does; so it's misleading. Here are my complaints:

-Each week has a different exercize, making it almost impossible to use the book while doing a complete workout routine. You'd have to figure out how to flip week to week (which I haven't mastered).
-The new symtoms mentioned each week are not necessarily complementary to the actual week in which it is being mentioned. So, in order to get the info I either need to read the entire book ASAP, or not use this book as any kind of guideline for symtoms and what to expect at all.
-Why did the author find it necessary to list a new and horrible potential complication of pregnancy each week? Couldn't that have been condensed in another section as well?
-The author claims there is an index if you'd rather flip right to one section, yet despite the lengthy index full of complex medical terminology (I'd likely never consult this book for in the first place since a vast array of potential complications is only generally explained), I couldn't find such simple and important phrases such as "cramping" in the index. Was this a computer generated index? It seems like it.
-I initially thought that each week would give the same information-such as the size of the fetus, yet was disappointed to discover that the type of information given each week is not uniform. Many weeks there is no information about fetus size mentioned.
-Fetal development details could have been much more detailed later in the book.
-Illustrations are nice, but photographs would have been much better.
-I feel in some sections I am being lectured. For example, discouraging bringing your kids to the doctor's office if they could cry or complain.Sorry, but this is normal for kids and of all people an OB or midwife clinic should understand that the vast majority of the world population doesn't have a nanny on call.Parents struggle as it is with most of the United States being family unfriendly and there is no need to burden them with this lecture in a pregnancy book.
-As I indicated, information is basically just scattered due to the format.
-Virtually useless for those anticipating a natural birth at home or in a hostpial that is supportive of natural birth. It talks plenty about drugs and very little about alternative options.

What I liked about this book was that it does have a good amount of information, but sadly it should be mostly useless to most people expecting a 'normal' pregnancy and natural birth. But If I DID have a complication in my pregnancy, this is certainly not the medical resource for researching the latest information, which puts it in the no-man's land as far as about 50% of the content is concerned.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better pregnancy books I've read
This book is great to have on the nightstand for a 5-10 read before bed once or twice a week.It is an easy read and very straightforward so it's hard not to just read thru the entire book in one sitting rather than read it week by week.It is not the most informative but it also does not have a lot of useless details. The illustrations are straightforward and to the point. It's not a cutesy book and very little humor which makes it a nice change from other books with lots of fluff and cutesy illustrations and comments. This book was highly recommended by a physician friend of mine so I've read it for my pregnancy and buy it for my friends for their pregnancies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Negative Information
This book is written by two knowledgeable professionals, however, it is full of negative information regarding what can go wrong during your pregnancy and all the bad things that could affect your fetus. Granted, this is useful information for a small percentage of women who are pregnant, but I've pretty much stopped reading it (and will skim some parts only) because the material can really scare you and make you anxious. If you are a first-time Mom like myself, I'd choose a different, more positive book on pregnancy and enjoy the experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly idiotic
I read this after "What to Expect When You're Expecting," thinking it would give me a specific understanding of the progress of the pregnancy. But the title is just a marketing gimmick; assignment of advice to specific weeks is arbitrary, and the advice itself is oversimplified, patronizing, and idiotic: don't do crack while pregnant, and have your husband buy you a present... seriously?!?

3-0 out of 5 stars Information is good, if you use the index
This is my first pregnancy, so I was excited to buy this book and see how the baby and I were developing each week.I also thought that it would keep me from having information overload -- just a small amount of information every week.I'm now at week 13 and I don't use the week-by-week format any more, except to check in and see how the baby is developing.I almost always use the index in the book to find information. This occurred to me during the first few weeks when I was experiencing cramping and I didn't know why. That topic had not yet been covered in the book, and it wasn't listed as an early symptom. As a first time pregnant lady, I thought that meant something was wrong.Another problem is that cramping was not listed in the index. Finally I heard the term round ligament pain and looked that up.It wasn't listed until week 17, but I had been experiencing it almost from the beginning.I realize that the authors wanted to keep the chapers concise, but the readers should realize that pregnancies don't work in a week-by-week format. Some symptoms or questions may come along earlier in real life than they do in the book. ... Read more
