3-0 out of 5 stars Great fun from one of the masters of horror....
It seems an amazing fact that the majority of actors who have tied their stars to horror have had personalities that couldn't be farther apart than the characters they played. Certainly, Peter Cushing may be the classic example of this. He often played unethical murderous characters in horror films and appeared as the hero in countless others, but he was one of the most soft-spoken gentleman one could ever meet. This book includes both of Cushing's books - written in the late 80s. His Autobiography and the follow up "Past Forgetting." The first is excellent, recounting his life and career from its early days to the present and includes many thoughtful anecdotes and his great love for his wife Helen shines through. The second part - Past Forgetting - is for fans only. It's not badly written or boring but contains little of substance and is not easily recalled. A disappointment after the first book, but then again - when you already told your life story, what are you supposed to do? Tell it again. Still, this is highly recommended for all fans of Cushing and Hammer films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Cushing....A Love Story
Peter Cushing was fiercely devoted to his wife, Helen and this autobiography certainly drives that point home. The death of his wife in the early 1970's left Cushing in a deep state of mourning that he never really recovered from, in his own words, he spent the remaining years of his life after Helen's death, awaiting his own death.Cushing regales us with stories of his early years, his years in Hollywood, his eventual return to England and his association with Hammer and Amicus, but throughout the entire book, we never lose sight of the fact that Cushing was deeply in love with his wife. One seldom hears/reads of such devotion to one's spouse, but always the gentleman, Cushing gives us all a glimpse into what his world was really like and although it would have been nice to hear more tales of his Hammer/Amicus days, the fact that he opened his heart and bared his soul unashamedly is enough to make this book a must for any Cushing fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Helen, Too Little Hammer
Peter Cushing's two-volume autobiography, now conveniently combined into one volume, is indispensible reading to any Hammer fan like myself, who grew up looking forward to each new Cushing shocker. It is the essentialcompanion volume to Christopher Lee's autobiography "Tall, Dark &Gruesome". Mr. Cushing's considerable personal charm and famousgentlemanliness shines from these pages. For my own taste, I could haveused less on his great romance with Helen and more day-to-day off screen atHammer & Amicus, but other readers, especially women, will reactdifferently.Cushing was nothing if not madly in love with his wife, andher early death left a void nothing ever filled, though Cushing lived onpast her for over 20 years. The photos have been well & generouslyselected, and overall, the book is a pleasureable read about one of thenicest men ever to make a career scaring the pants off us. Those who knowPeter only as Grand Moff Tarkin in "Star Wars" will find a wealthof career that led to that pinnicle, and even his die-hard HammerFrankenstein & Van Helsing fans may not know he worked with Laurel& Hardy, Cary Grant and James Whale! It makes you feel like you'resitting in a lovely seaside cottage, sipping tea and nibbling cakes whilePeter regales you with tales from a life you may end up wishing you hadled. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Cushing, buy this book!
First things first: It's a pity that the author may lose a few sales seeing that Amazon - probably *the* major online venue for books - has listed this book under an incorrect title. The correct title is IN ALL SINCERITY... PETER CUSHING, not "In all sincerely" which doesn't even make any sense grammatically.

This is the first time I observed such a faux pas from Amazon and I hope this can be rectified as the book deserves to be easily found via a regular title search.

The title refers to the way Cushing always signed his letters or autographs. It's become such a trademark for him that if you ever come across a signed item from him that does not carry this sentence, it more than likely is not authentic.

Cushing was one of the most popular actors of the Horror Screen. Both admired by public and fellow colleagues as the "gentle man" of horrors, he was one of the last of a breed of courteous and ever polite people who seem to belong to a long forgotten era. There doesn't appear to be *anyone* who has even the slightest disparaging thing to say about him.

There are already a number of excellent books on Cushing on the market, but the angle of this one is that the author had approached as many of Cushing's fellow-actors and directors that he could get in contact with.

As such the book is told from the perspective of celebrities who knew him and freely shared their insights into this man's personality. His love for his wife Helen is well documented and runs like a thread through the whole book.

When I initially heard about the project I expected a thin booklet with a couple of quotations by the people interviewed. I couldn't believe it when I noticed that the final product covers more than 400 pages and as such is one of the most in depth books about the actor on the market. It is very well researched and the only thing annoying is the lack of an index, something that would have come in handy to find all the relevant quotations again. The actual interview passages are also a little bit too much in the simple form of "What was it like working with....?", but these are only minor niggles and shouldn't deter anyone from reading this book.

At the beginning of every chapter you will also find illustrations from comic artist Neil ("Black Forest"/"Wicked West") Vokes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Gentle Man of Horror": More than meets the eye!
As the editor of "In All Sincerity. . . Peter Cushing," I am somewhat biased, but as a reader of fine biography, Christopher Gullo has done an amazing job with this book. His research is meticulous, as is his ability to tell a great story through the use of facts and data. His insight is deep yet constrained and reveals many ephemeral details that Cushing himself often glossed over or ignored due to his modesty and lack of self-aggrandizement. As his first book effort, Gullo has done himself and Peter Cushing a great service. Compared to other works on this subject, "In All Sincerity" epitomizes the nature of a true devotee and leaves the proverbial door wide open for more research and exploration on a fabulous actor and a true "Gentle Man" of the human race.

5-0 out of 5 stars A marvellous tribute to a marvellous actor & gentleman!
If you are a fan [like many of us] or just have a passing interest in one of the truly great actors of the past 60 years, then this book is a must. Although there have been plenty of recent books devoted to the life and times of Peter Cushing, this volume stands out due to the meticulous research by the author along with it's easy flowing style. A joy to read and a future source book for fans of the great man I'm sure - packed from cover to cover with fascinating details of the great man and his career. Well done Chris - step out!! 5 Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars In All Sincerity, I love this book!
If you are a Peter Cushing fan, then you MUST buy this book. It will give you a detailed history of Peter's life and take you on a journey you won't forget.Knowing Peter as I did, I know he would be proud that "In All Sincerity" was written about him.

A wonderful book, a wonderful title and a wonderful writer!Christpher Gullo has left us ALL Peter's legacy to be enjoyed for years to come, and for ALL new Peter Cushing fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Cushing: The Gentle Man of Horror and his 91 Films
From what I know, there are only three books that have been writin about Peter Cushing: the two volumes of his auto-biography and this amazing book. This is a very informative and entertaining book on an amazing actor. It gives detailed information about every movie Peter Cushing ever acted in.This book is a must have for every die-hard Peter Cushing fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book that shows much love of the subject.
This is a fan love letter to Peter Cushing. As such it is, perhaps, beyond criticising. It contains an obsesive amount of material on Mr. Cushing and others involved in the old Hammer films. Despite it's fan perspective, itmanages to give fair critical readings of his movies. Be warned, the bookis pricey for what you get. If you are a rabid Cushing fan, however, or agenre fan with deep pockets, this book is recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Midnight Marquee Press, Inc. is pleased to introduce this volume that begins the "second phase" of Midnight Marquee Press’ acclaimed Actors Series. Having shone the spotlight on those titans of Golden and Silver Age horror (all American by birth or naturalization)—Lugosi, Karloff, Chaney, Jr., Price, and Lorre—Midnight Marquee now ventures into the Iron Age of Hammer (and British horror) with a collection examining the work of Peter Cushing.

Cushing has been the subject of other books (and his own autobiographies, reprinted in one volume by Midnight Marquee Press, 1999), so one might question the need for yet another work. The answer, I think, lies in the essays that make up this volume, which put the emphasis squarely on the performer himself (as befits an Actors Series). Not only do Midnight Marquee’s stable of reliables and newcomers analyze 56 of Cushing’s performances in depth, but the annotated filmography offers capsule comments about most of his other roles. Anyone interested in the enormous contributions to horror film and film in general by the "Gentle Man of Horror"—arguably the most accomplished actor ever to become a horror star—will find a great deal of insight and intelligence within these pages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great actor and a good book.
I consider this to be a very fine tome--perhaps the best in the MIDNIGHT MARQUEE ACTOR SERIES thus far.Along with excellent pieces by Jonathan Lampley, Mark Clark, Steve Thornton and a host of big guns in the Horror Historian field, the true kudos must be given to the fine editorial work by Anthony Ambrogio.Far too much of what passes for Film history/criticism is really just dishonest agenda driven political boilerplate and far too many editors engage in "grey" censorship--not publishing or altering the text of pieces based not on quality but their own external agendas. And no doubt Mr Ambrogio could have done the above, was tempted to do so and would have highly praised for doing so. Yet he did not indicating a rare and probable career killing integrity. What results is a marvelous book that, besides the usual, required and expected material, also contains much..very very much that the reader would not encounter anywhere else. Thus making this a unigue work--one that serves as filmography, biography, film critigue and trailblazer--providing rare insights and examining previous neglected aspects of the life and career of a great actor. In my opinion, this is one of the best books written about Peter Cushing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Look at the Hammer Horror Icons
Like Karloff and Lugosi, the names Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are synonymous with horror. The pair made 22 films together (far more than Karloff and Lugosi) although some may be surprised to know that not all of them were in the horror genre.Their work is celebrated in this new book from McFarland & Company, always a leader in scholarly film books.

Mark A. Miller, English teacher and writer for publications such as Filmfax and Shivers, looks at the pair's career in detail and with a thorough analysis if each of their films. One can say that Karloff and Lugosi passed the horror team torch on to the pair in more ways than one.As Miller notes in the introduction, Karloff and Lee made three films together including The Crimson Altar (1968) and Corridors of Blood (1958).The Pair became close friends and even played cricket together.

Miller begins with chapters devoted to the early lives of each actor. We learn about their childhoods, families, education, personal lives, and what drew them into careers as actors.Lee, born in London but of Italian ancestry, can trace his family's roots back to the time of Christ.Despite having several family members who were actors, Cushing was into his thirties before he began his own theatrical career.Of all things, the refined British actor was a big fan of early Western film star, Tom Mix.

As mentioned, not all of their collaborations were in the horror genre. In fact, their first teaming was a production of Shakespeare's Hamlet in 1948.Perhaps even more amusing was their second pairing, the 1952 romantic musical, Moulin Rouge. However it would be their next two pairings that would eventually make legends of Lee and Cushing, 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein and 1958's Horror of Dracula. These two films teamed the pair with England's Hammer Studios for whom they would make 8 films together, and many more on their own. These films, and the sequels that followed returned horror to the gothic roots of Universal Studio's films of the 1930s and 1940s.

Miller provides a detailed synopsis, background, and critical analysis of each of their 22 films and had done a remarkable job of research. There are wonderful anecdote's about each film's production and include comments by the actors themselves as well as period reviews from critics.Miller shares his expert view on what worked...and didn't work with each of the films, breaking down directorial and casting selections, and examining key scenes.A complete filmography is included with a complete list of credits for each film, year of release, and running time.

About the only mild criticism I would lob is that it would have been nice to have a few more photos and perhaps some color photos but this is minor.Miller has done outstanding job of covering this immortal team and their films.

THE best book to own for a complete guide to Peter Cushing's career. Most books only cover the films, thisone contains extensive coverage of stage, television, and even a forgotten radio serial with Vincent Price in the 1970's - something Price books fail to mention! It would have been even better had some of his lesser known films gotten more than a paragraph or two. Also, a photo of Cushing as Holmes or van Helsing on the cover instead of one as Frankenstein with a scantily clad female would certainly have been in better taste.Still, it's excellent.

Excerpt: Hamlet is a 1948 British film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, directed by and starring Sir Laurence Olivier. Hamlet was Olivier's second film as director, and also the second of his three Shakespeare films. It is the only one of Olivier's directorial efforts to be filmed in black and white, and was the first British film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Olivier's Hamlet is the Shakespeare film that has received the most prestigious accolades, winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. However, it proved controversial among Shakespearean purists, who felt that Olivier had made too many alterations and excisions to the four-hour play by cutting nearly two hours worth of content. Milton Shulman wrote in The Evening Standard "To some it will be one of the greatest films ever made, to others a deep disappointment. Laurence Olivier leaves no doubt that he is one of our greatest living actors...his liberties with the text, however, are sure to disturb many." The film follows the overall story of the play, but cuts nearly half the dialogue, and includes an opening voice-over that represents Hamlet's fundamental problem as indecision. The film begins with a narrator (actually Olivier himself) quoting some of Hamlet's lines from Act I Scene IV: ...http://booksllc.net/?id=80530 ... Read more

Product Description
Dust jacket notes: "From the silent film Sherlock Holmes Baffled in 1903 to The Seven Per Cent Solution of 1976, Sherlock Holmes has occupied a special place in the history of the cinema. This is an illustrated study of his screen career which includes a comprehensive filmography - from the flickering silent movies to the stage and small screen, from serious thrillers to spoofs. It is also a study of the men who have portrayed Holmes - men such as Forrect Holger-Madsen who both directed and starred in five movies between 1908 and 1911; William Gillette, who also had great success with the character on stage; Eille Norwood who played the role in nearly fifty films; Basil Rathbone; Christopher Lee; and of course, Peter Cushing. With detailed reference to, and analysis of, individual films, David Stuart Davies charts the fate of the renowned detective, his companion, Dr Watson, and his arch enemy, Moriarty, in the hands of various directors and scriptwriters. He also explores the ways in which directors have tried to make Holmes acceptable to the audiences of the day; patriotic homilies during World War II and affectionate parody from Billy Wilder in the present day. He shows the impact that the relaxation of censorship and the creation of James Bond, the hero to end all heroes, has had on Sherlock Holmes as a viable box-office proposition.
