From the supplier: The Association for the Advancement of Physical Education was created in 1885. It is now called the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. After World War II, the emphasis on physical fitness increased at the college level but was limited to the support for men's athletic activities. In the 1960s, the physical education profession began to emerge as a serious discipline. In the 1970s and 1980s, the emphasis on health and nutrition gave physical fitness a new meaning. The future of the physical education profession depends upon improved training for its practitioners and an increase in the profession's areas of specialization.

I'm only giving it two stars because it flows pretty well.
Hi,
I usually don't write spoilers. I think I will a bit, this time. If I'd based the rating system here on the story alone. I would have given it a negative five stars... Mr.Chaplin came from searing poverty, so he says. I don't believe he was ever challenged on that count. He was given the golden ticket in life. An extremely limited number of people are chosen to receive unbelievable luck in life. He was one such person. He went from nothing, to obscene wealth. After reading several hundred pages of his charmed existence. The main thought I can't help but keep coming back to? He didn't do a damn thing for the other 99.99% impoverished after he'd made it so Cinderella big. He was handed millions of dollars during the depression. Did he do so much as open a few soup kitchens? At least a token Thank You to the country that gave him everything? If not in the US, why not London? He never gave anything back. Further, he shirked his military duty in WW1. The movie by his name, w/R.Downey jr., alludes to his having been rejected by the army as being too scrawney. His own Bio makes no mention of this. He only says that some people thought he did more for us from behind a camera. He eventually married a child bride. He married a barely 18yo girl, when he was 36yrs her senior. That's disgusting on a few levels. He had his charmed life handed to him, & apparently didn't learn a thing from his own hardships. To me, that is utterly unforgivable. I doubt I'll ever re-read it. Anyone want a copy?

I love Charlie.
Reading this book was like going on a magical adventure through time and across the world. I will never forget how captivated I was to learn of this mans adventures, having been a fan for a life, it was an indelible treat to read a book that feels as though you are being told the man's story by himself. A must have for a true fan.

This book arrived quickly in time for Christmas.It was a used copy but was in the condition described.

A remarkable Rags to Riches Story
Chaplin's autobiography is one of the most powerful I've ever read. Starting in almost indescribable poverty in London, his childhood was comparable to something out of a Dickens novel. Chaplin begins in show business as a child performer from a family struggling on the fringe of England's vaudeville circuit. His arrival in America at the birth of the film industry and his subsequent success both as an artist and a business man are just remarkable given his humble beginnings. Along the way he befriends and meets a veritable who's who of early 20th century celebrities from all walks of life and his descriptions of his vast circle of friends and acquaintances are one of the highlights of this book. These include actors, politicians, business people and scientists. ( Fairbanks, Pickford, Churchill, Hoover, Hearst,Einstein, etc.. etc.)
Chaplin wrote this book at a time when tell all biography was not what it is today and while he shares some interesting perceptions about various personalities he is by today's standards quite discreet.
I found this book incredibly interesting on a number of levels , First Chaplin himself is a very interesting character. Secondly, the other people who float in and out of his life are fascinating. Finally and perhaps most entertainingly for me are his descriptions of early Hollywood and the foundations of the movie industry.

All of these factors added up to an amazing read and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in movies or in early 20th century culture.

Wonderful history of the Movie Industry
Charles Chaplin's autobiography is a wonderful history of the entertainment industry as it evolves from vaudeville to silent pictures to "talkies".You also get a personal side of history in general as you experience WWI, WWII, and other major events of the century through the eyes of well connected individuals.If you are looking for personal information on Mr. Chaplin, read another book. What Mr. Chaplin shares with you is how he went about his business and how the business evolved. He does give a personal account of his childhood in South London which he remembers in great detail and it is similar to Frank McCourt's childhood in Ireland.The difference for Chaplin is that he inherited his parents musical talent and got out early.Watch the video of his acceptance of his honorary Oscar in 1972 BEFORE you read the book!There you will see the personal side of Chaplin as he stands for the longest standing ovation in Oscar history. ... A balletmaster 200 years ago
One of the most important persons in ballet history is Charles-LouisDidelot. Mary Grace Swift has written a most learned biography about him.In this scholarly volume, winner of the De la Torre Bueno Prize in 1973,there are many illustrations, both from Russian archives and from theBritish Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.Didelot(1767-1837) was born in Sweden and again I can note that I have a veryfamous compatriot in the field of dance. He was of French parentage andborn in the reign of King Gustavus III who was known as "The TheatreKing". But Didelot did not remain faithful to his king or the countryof his birth. The king felt the need to write a ratherdesperate letter:"The contract of our Didelot is finished after the fire in the theaterand I beg you to let him return as soon as possible, so that I again mighthave the pleasure of seeing him dance, as I cannot understand why we payhim when he is dancing in London". Before recorded history there was dance
There were giants in the Earth in the old days and one of those giants has written this little gem of a book that will be of great interest to dancers. How fortunate that Doris Humphreys took the time to record for us her philosophy of modern dance and took the time to notate most of her modern dances. And how fortunate that Charles Humphries Woodford turned her notes and ideas into a book and how fortunate that Princeton Book Company published that book. Doris, of course, gives us her modern dance cannon that dance is basically a serious art form based on falls and recovery. That idea is new in dance, but not new in music or in human physiology. In music it is tension and release, crusis, meta crusis, and ana crucis. In physiology it is contraction, recoil, relaxation. In baseball it is hit, recoil, and relax. Such are the basic elements of human actions and dance is based on human values and experience. For instance, Doris tells us that dance phrases are based on human breathing patterns and rhymthms. The total outlook is summarized by her famous statement: "My dance is an art concerned with human values." So read this work if you wish to sharpen your critical eye and improve your dance. But, you know, if we are to understand the good, we need to talk about what is not so good. What's not so good is that some of the notes are too short and skimmpy (Corybantic 1948; Invention 1949; Night Spell 1951). The composer whose music is used for the dance is mentioned but the specific piece is not. Bela Bartok wrote a lot of good music. But what particular piece does Doris dance Corybantic to? We don't know. Even the much better notated Day on Earth 1947 which runs three pages only mentions that the music comes from Aaron Copland. And while I am being critical, I shall also complain that the short biography is too short. It runs a page a a quarter and fails to mention the the cause of her final illness and the arthritis that led to her early retirement.

A worthy and highly recommended addition to modern dance history and reference shelves
New Dance: Writings on Modern Dance is an anthology of essays, lectures, and notes revealing the muse behind the choreography created by modern dance founder Doris Humphrey (1895-1958). Including notes made before and during the creation of forty-one of her dances, and even an interview in which Humphrey speaks her own mind, New Dance is an invaluable glimpse into her contributions to the evolution of an art form. "[Q:] 'What is your opinion of pantomime and dramatic action as sources for dance movement?' DH: 'I think both are wonderful as long as they are translated into movement, the danger being, of course, that the transition remains incomplete. Done by a master, I like pantomime.'" Charles Peterson entered the jazz world of New York as a guitarist but made his true contribution documenting an era and its most notable performers. Peterson took up the camera in the mid 1930s and transformed himself from a performer on stage to a visual recorder and observer of the stage. Creating a photographic style that combines artistic sensibility and technical skill, he became a preeminent New York jazz photographer of the pre-bebop, small combos and Big Band era.

A deep love of jazz led Peterson to the legendary clubs of Harlem, 52nd Street, and Greenwich Village, concert halls and ballrooms, jam sessions, recording studios, backstage get-togethers, and private parties. As a jazz scene insider, Peterson had access to all of these formal and informal venues. Among the countless subjects he enshrined on film are Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Zutty Singleton, Fats Waller, Mildred Bailey, Cab Calloway, Pee Wee Russell, Lester Young, and Jack Teagarden.

Peterson's photographs expose a startling contrast between integrated bandstands and audiences and the segregated world, as well as reveal the determination of those who refused to be confined by such oppressive conventions. The term can refer to: The Eagle Tavern in 1830Music hall in London had its origins in entertainment provided in the new style saloon bars of public houses during the 1830s. MINGUS the surprising
First of all, it was really surprising for me to see how much of the book has nothing to do with the music - this is a very personall confession, told in a form of a novel in which, accidentally, some of the characters (besides Mingus) have the names of Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and, since the depiction of Red Norvo is not very flattering (and he was very much alive when the book was published), he is "hidden" but instantly recognizible to anyone who has some knowledge of the illustrious carreer of Charles (not Charlie!) Mingus...

The hero of this autobiography/novel, very often presented in third-person narration, is very much concerned with spirituality and sexuality, so the important people from the author's life (family, friends, lovers, prostitutes, pimps, medical professionals) are often not the ones you've heard of before reading the book, while some familiar names (Fats Navarro, Nat Hentoff) are here because they were important for the main topic of the book. And the topic is Charles Mingus, the human being, the man - Afican, White and Asian /but dominantly black/ - musician, lover, son, father...

Naturally, if you DON'T know much about Mingus' remarkable music, you will hardly reach for the book but, if you do, this will be an interesting insight into his rich mind.
Eric Dolphy is mentioned only once, I don't remember the mention of people like Danny Richmond or Jimmy Knepper, but the web of a complex and intricate life is remarkably presented. Compared to the music, this is not the best work of Charles Mingus, but if you like his music you probably won't mind reading this... After all, there's a lot of sex, psychiatry, violence and music inside this book; there's something for everyone's taste.

Great literature?No, but an interesting artifact anyhow...
Those looking for anything like a conventional musical bio should go to "Mingus, a Critical Biography" by Brian Priestley; "Underdog" isn't that at all; it's an artifact of Mingus' peculiar world-view at a particularly hard time in his life.


Mentally ill? Mingus was long noted for fits of depression (in spite of repeated success in the music industry, he nevertheless ended up working for the post office on a number of occasions) and a volcanic temper (he re-counts an on-stage knife-fight with Ellington trombonist Juan Tizol, but leaves out mention of his punching Jimmy Knepper in the mouth hard enough to break teeth).He sometimes channeled it for art: he was probably the first musician ever to release an album ("Black Saint") with liner notes from his psychoanalyst.In "Underdog", he recounts checking himself into Bellvue Hospital, in an ill-considered search for "some rest". That got him, he says, an offer of a lobotomy, but also yielded a song, "Hellview of Bellvue/Lock 'em Up",and he raised the interesting question: if a somewhat successful half-black jazz musician in 1960's America believed that people were out to steal from him and oppress him, was he acutely paranoid, just observant, or both?

Sexually escapist, and scatological? Well, yes, but before feminism, or political correctness, and not without pay-back: the man who bragged of trying to bury his misery in [...] and dope never apparently finds them to be a satisfactory release, and after all the orgies, writes a tune called "Half-Mast Inhibition". . .

So, listen to the music first. See the short b&w documentary. If you want accurate linear bio information or critical analysis, go to the Priestly book. Then put on "Black Saint", "Mingus Am Uh", or "Blues and Roots", and read this.

The Black Saint in a Sinner's Body
If you are a fan of Charles Mingus' music, you will certainly enjoy this wonderfully bombastic character in his autobiography.His story has his life woven in with some fictionalized characters and segments"jazzed" in, which adds quite a peculiar nature to his work. However, you will never guess what segments are true and which aren't.Thework is very peculiar as an autobiography, revealing more the conversationsand the feelings he underwent through his travels as opposed to a straightnarrative from beginning to end.His work goes through a path offlashbacks and such, with a major emphasis on women (esp. his lovers), theroad, and his jazz music. The interesting people he meets in his travelsare well interweaved, and really make the story.My only criticism is whenthis "jazz" story starts to ramble out into peculiar segmentswhich seem to lose your attention.The work tends to well reflect thechaotic nature of this genius.It is also a treat to listen to his musicwhile reading... One of the many pleasures I've undertaken in.Highlyrecommended reading. ... Read more
