5-0 out of 5 stars Using SPSS to solve statistical problems
The authors state that they wrote the books with two primary goals in mind. An opportunity to learn and use the statistical software package SPSS and to provide an introduction to a variety of statistical analysis procedures commonly used by graduate students, researchers and other professionals.

They have succeeded extremely well on both occasions.
The book has made a tremendous difference in the analyses of data collected for my master's thesis. The text is well written, well presented and in logical order. The examples, described in the book but also provided on a diskette, are very useful and clearly explain which procedures to use for which analysis and why. The illustrations in the book closely match the examples and the section "Interpreting SPSS --- results" is extremely useful in analyzing one's own results. One minor drawback: the text assumes total lack of computer literacy and goes to embarassing length in explaining how to open and save files. It can safely be assumed that most people using books of this kind would at least know that much.

All in all, a great book and a real time saver!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal supplementary book for learning basic statistics
This book is very easy to read.It covers most topics you will meet in basic statistics.Very good explanations in procedures and outputs.Although you can not find any statistical formula in this book, use it with conventional statistics text books will be very benefical. ... Read more

Product Description
The phenomenon of suicide by cop has increased in frequency in recent years, creating great concern in the law enforcement community. In suicide by cop, an individual behaves so as to provoke police officers into attempting to disarm him, sometimes killing him in the process. For example, an individual may hold a gun and advance toward police officers, refusing to stop or drop the weapon. It has proven difficult but important to distinguish these acts from those in which there is no justification for police officers’ killing an individual, and from those in which a person is killed during a confrontation with police, but had no suicidal motivation. Criminal penalties for the police officers involved and civil lawsuits by the relatives of the deceased person depend critically on these distinctions.

This book examines what we know about the phenomenon of suicide by cop and places this behavior in a broader context. For example, some murder victims (perhaps as many as a quarter) provoke the murderer, to some extent, into killing them—so-called victim-precipitated homicide. In some cases, it has been suspected that murderers kill and act thereafter in such a way as to provoke the state into executing them. The authors then examine some of the issues specific to suicide by cop, such as whether there is a racial bias in these acts and what the legal implications are. Finally, they discuss the process of hostage negotiation (since those involved in suicide by cop often take hostages during the confrontation with police), the need to provide counseling for police officers involved in suicide-by-cop incidents, and how we might reduce the incidence of this behavior. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Creation Communicates
'Everybody knows God through His self-revelation in creation.' p 94

The investigative co-ordinates into the creation have often blurred the purpose of redemption; certainly, most serious of all is the denial of the realities of life.

'This is why the apostle Paul says in Romans 1 that everybody knows the reality of the true and living God, the Creator of heaven and earth.' p 10

Mark David Futato sets the pericope for the study, to observe and interpret the self-exhibition of God's perfections, through the teaching of Psalm 19. He seeks to improve our understanding in the difference between general and special revelation: 'The revelation in creation and the revelation in the Bible both need to be interpreted, but the revelation in the Bible takes precedence in at least two ways.' p 19 The status accorded scriptural revelation then permits us to interpret revelation in the creation objectively. Futato further provides a compelling foundation for another presupposition: that of the categorical Creator/creature distinction: 'People see the glory of God in creation, but then they make the fundamental mistake of failing to distinguish the Creator from the creation.' pg 15 A proper view of natural revelation needs to be maintained to uphold the 1st perfection, God's glory in His creation, with Futato presenting clarification on this fact through an exegesis of Romans 1.

Futato unfolds the 2nd attribute, God's power 'exerted in creation and providence in His bringing the universe into existence and in His continual sustaining of the creation.' pg 24 Daily God's creation manifests His absolute power and powerfully witnesses to His creatures. As to forces of nature Futato humbly submits, 'When we experience a certain power, we are to say, 'That power belongs to the Lord'.' pg 30 We are reminded that it is the pre-existent Son who mediated and sustains the creation by the power of His word. 'By universal consent the furnishing of life and light to the world belongs to the very essence of the Logos-task.' Geerhardus Vos, Redemptive History & Biblical Interpretation, ed Richard Gaffin Jr p 63. As was the case with the first attribute, Futato moves his apologetic from general to special revelation, presenting the resurrection of our Lord as a display of God's might in creation.

Futato urges that we become conversant with the 3rd perfection of God, His wisdom. 'This theme runs throughout the Scriptures: God used His infinite wisdom to create the world. The Scriptures teach what our experience confirms: creation bears witness to the wisdom of God.' p 44 A reverential awe for our Creator whose dominion encompasses the whole universe serves as a stimulus for adoration of God's grace as Scripture's testimony to His provision and preservation is abundant. Says Futato, 'God's providence is His wise care and control of everything He has made, including human destiny.' p 49 Again, scriptural revelation teaches us that in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge sufficient for such wise government.

Being able to see the unfailing love of God as the motive for creating and redeeming is best expressed in the relative clause, 'For God so loved the world'. Drawing from the OT act of creation to the NT act of new creation, Futato includes a faithful exposition of Romans 8. Professor Futato gainfully employs Paul's speech at Athens to bring to our remembrance the startling revelation witnessed through the moving testimony of natural creation: 'Paul says to these people, who don't know the Bible, 'God has not left Himself without testimony'.' p 67 Even though general revelation is not efficient for salvation, this will not excuse the guilt of sinful men, who suppress the knowledge of God. He ends this strong message by calling attention to how God's provision in Christ ultimately not only reconciled us to God, but how Christ will mediate the reconciliation between the inanimate creation and the Creator. The whole of creation will once again worship the Creator.

God alone has absolute power over life and death. This concept is repeatedly brought to the fore in the OT, especially where God's intervention through His blessing or covenant curse is the cause. God manifests His judgment in the form of destruction so that people might repent and be saved. Speaking of His 5th perfection, His justice revealed in the natural realm, Futato furnishes us with the universal knowledge of death: 'Paul teaches us that...'Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death...' p 93 To this Futato strikes up an antithetical note of hope gained in the knowledge of our future bodily resurrection: 'His power is not against us. His power is for us, because He has loved us in His Son.' p 35

Finally, he reflects on the perfection of God's covenant with creation with respect to His faithfulness. Seeing the OT fulfilled through the New, Futato provides us reason to believe that God is infinitely faithful, with Futato expressing care through biblical-theological associations to show how all of God's promises are fulfilled in Christ. Futato asks whether we share God's love for the creation. Have we not put man at the center of creation for too long? Have we not closed ourselves off to an important part of God's revelation? The experiential preaching of Futato enlivens these attributes to an advanced degree of personal assurance. Throughout we are gently re-assured by Futato's confession which is strongly conditioned by an ever present element of praise for God. What a worldview!

'The realization of the counsel of God begins with creation. Creation is the initial act and foundation of all divine revelation and therefore the foundation of all religious and ethical life as well.' Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics 2:407 ... Read more

Product Description
While the term neural networks may be unfamiliar to many organizational psychologists, exciting new applications of artificial intelligence are attracting notice among organizational behavior researchers. In Neural Networks in Organizational Research: Applying Pattern Recognition to the Analysis of Organizational Behavior, authors David Scarborough and Mark Somers bring researchers, academics, and practitioners up to speed on this emerging field, in which powerful computing capabilities offer new insights into longstanding, complex I/O questions such as employee selection and behavioral prediction. Neural networks mimic the way the human brain works, using interconnected nodes and feedback loops to learn to recognize even subtle patterns in vast amounts of data. They can process data far more quickly and efficiently than conventional techniques can, and produce better empirical results. They are especially useful for modeling nonlinear processes. The book traces the development of this methodology and demonstrates how it opens up new ways of thinking about traditional problems. Academic researchers will gain a design template for studying both the linear and non-linear elements of a given problem, and thus enhance their own research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Collaborative Work
This book is amazing. The collaboration of the top theologian-pastors that wrote for this book is stellar. It is very helpful learning how very different people, form all over the U.S. have come to the same conclusion about the current state of U.S. culture. Each author offers useful perspective and strategy for reaching people here, particularly in urban settings, with the gospel. Read it and become more prepared to share the truth with people in your everyday life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Truth in a Truth-Hating World
How can the church teach the gospel of a man who claimed to be "the Truth" to a world that hates truth claims? That was the topic being addressed at the 2006 Desiring God National Conference. This book is basically transcripts of the plenary sessions from that conference.

Each chapter corresponds to the message presented by each of the speakers at the conference: David Wells, Voddie Baucham, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll, D.A. Carson, and John Piper... not a bad lineup! There is also a chapter titled "A Conversation With the Pastors", containing a transcript of a discussion moderated by Justin Taylor.

The contributors each addressed a different aspect of the relationship between the church (and individual Christians) and the world. Each of the essays is thought-provoking in its own way. One thing John Piper always does well at his conferences is assigning the speakers topics which they are particularly suited to address (for instance, Keller's focus on reaching urban intellectuals, Driscoll's focus on missional contextualization, etc). Even in book form, the unique voice and focus of every author really shines through.

This is a book highly recommended, particularly for college students and others who are constantly bombarded with postmodern philosophy. Also recommended are the audio/video recordings of the conference sessions from which this book was derived, available for free from the Desiring God Resource Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This collection of essays, articles, and transcripts is a balanced look at post-modernism and the impact of PM on the church.
I expected a bit more direct assessment of emerging/emergent, but overall I appreciated the book's tone and presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!!!
YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!Wish I had cases of this book to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christ above all
This book is edited by John Piper and Justin Taylor and has some topnotch Reformed pastor/theologians contributing: David Wells, Voddie Baucham, D. A. Carson, Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll, and John Piper. It is a great addition to the library of anyone who wants to put Christ above all things in this postmodern world. At the end of the book there are two different discussions lead by Justin Taylor that help even more to flesh out their theology particularly in regards to the emergent church. The book has good insights and though deep it is very readable and not just pie in the sky but gives practical insights into how to transform our culture. ... Read more

Fingerprints-out of the billions of them out there, why are no two the same? The answer to this question has eluded the human race since the early twentieth century, when law enforcement officials realized that fingerprints could be used as evidence of a perpetrator's identification when left behind at the scene of a crime. Since then, over twenty million criminals have had their fingerprints recorded, and not one fingerprint has ever been matched-until now. Product Description

Commended in the Mental Health category of the 2008 BMA Medical Book Competition.

This book offers an insight into the experience of psychiatric in-patient care, from both a professional and a user perspective. The editors highlight the problems in creating therapeutic environments within settings which are often poorly resourced, crisis driven and risk aversive.

The contributors argue that for change to occur there needs first of all to be a genuine appreciation of the experiences of those involved in the unpredictable, anxiety-arousing and sometimes threatening environment of the psychiatric ward. Each chapter comprises a personal account of in-patient care by those in the front line: people who have been admitted to a psychiatric ward; their relatives; or those that provide the care. These accounts are followed by two commentaries written from different perspectives, suggesting lessons that can be learnt to improve the quality of care.

Experiences of Mental Health In-patient Care will be useful for all mental health professionals, including mental health nurses, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, arts therapists, social workers and trainees, as well as service users and carers organisations.

Product Description
This book offers a fresh appraisal of the identity and involvement of the subalterns in Mark, arguing that the presence of the subalterns in Mark is a possible hermeneutical tool for re-reading the Bible in a postcolonial context like India. Part I Hermeneutics: General Methodological Considerations paves the way for a creative discussion on Mark and its interpreters in the rest of the study by looking at the issue of the spread of Christianity and missionary attempts at biblical interpretations that did not take the life of the natives into account. Many insights from the postcolonial situation can be found in the contextual interpretations such as liberation, feminist, postcolonial feminist and subaltern. Part II- Mark: Context and Interpretation considers colonial rule in Palestine and examines some Markan texts showing the potential role of the subalterns. It is argued that due to colonial rule, the native people suffered in terms of their identity, religion and culture. There was conflict between Galilee and Jerusalem mainly on religious issues. The victims of domination were the poor peasants and the artisans in Galilee. A dialogue and interaction with the Markan milieu was possible in the research and so the marginal and subaltern groups were effectively understood by exegeting Mark 10:17-31, 7:24-30 and 5:1-20 and showing the postcolonial issues such as the poor and their representation, gender, race, hybridity, class, nationalism, and purity respectively. The subalterns were mainly associated with movements of resistance in Palestine. The Markan proclamation of solidarity with those subalterns is significant. The general conclusion presents the implications of this interpretation for a hermeneutical paradigm for a postcolonial context. ... Read more

Product Description
A series of essays by Twain on reading and writing. "How to Tell a Story," the title piece illuminates Twain's own intuitive story-telling genius, as he describes the three elements -- the pause, poker-faced pseudo-innocence, and the performance of a pretended identity -- that shape his writing. Even more intriguing, he looks at his celebrated dramatic performances of his written work, describing his struggle to perfect the delivery of Jim Blaine's story of his Grandfather's Ram (from Roughing It), and comparing the end result to the original written version. Other pieces include "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses," as Twain takes Cooper to task for committing, "in the restricted space of two-thirds of a page [of The Deerslayer] .... 114 offenses against literary art out of a possible 115." In the process of his scathing attack, Twain again gives us a clear view into his own writing, objecting above all to the fact that Cooper's characters do not sound or act like real human beings. In other pieces, Twain defends the virtue of a dead woman, tries to protect ordinary citizens from insult by railroad conductors, and, in "The Private History of the 'Jumping Frog' Story," translates his celebrated story first into the "original" French, and then back into English. A delightful collection of Twain's wit and wisdom.Amazon.com Review
This book is worthy of being called a classic not only for thewonderful writing, but for the presentation: How to Tell a Storyand Other Essays is a facsimile edition of the original firstedition published in 1897 under the direction of Mark Twainhimself. It is but one volume in the wondrous 29-volume Oxford MarkTwain. The essays, which, besides the title essay, include thedevilishly brilliant "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences," "TravelingWith a Reformer," and others, were written a century ago, but theybristle with energy and wit. At times we take the great Twain forgranted, but this volume of essays serves as a wonderful reminder ofwhat a fine and funny writer he was. ... Read more
