Product Description
Back in 1917, Virginia Woolf expressed surprise that anyone as good as John Davidson should "be so little famous." This book, the first biography of Davidson (1857-1909) in more than thirty years, shows the poet to be a key figure in the emergence of literary modernism and a major influence on the younger poets of his day, particularly T.S. Eliot. Sloan presents a wealth of new information about Davidson's life, including his struggles in London as a penniless author. The picture that emerges is not simply that of a late Victorian rebel, but of a proto-Modernist who pioneered a new idiom and subject matter for twentieth-century verse. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "John Davidson," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have John Davidson in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with John Davidson when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name John Davidson, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description

According to the stereotype, late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century inventors, quintessential loners and supposed geniuses, worked in splendid isolation and then unveiled their discoveries to a marveling world. Most successful inventors of this era, however, developed their ideas within the framework of industrial organizations that supported them and their experiments. For African American inventors, negotiating these racially stratified professional environments meant not only working on innovative designs but also breaking barriers.

In this pathbreaking study, Rayvon Fouché examines the life and work of three African Americans: Granville Woods (1856--1910), an independent inventor; Lewis Latimer (1848--1928), a corporate engineer with General Electric; and Shelby Davidson (1868--1930), who worked in the U.S. Treasury Department. Detailing the difficulties and human frailties that make their achievements all the more impressive, Fouché explains how each man used invention for financial gain, as a claim on entering adversarial environments, and as a means to technical stature in a Jim Crow institutional setting.

Describing how Woods, Latimer, and Davidson struggled to balance their complicated racial identities -- as both black and white communities perceived them -- with their hopes of being judged solely on the content of their inventive work, Fouché provides a nuanced view of African American contributions to -- and relationships with -- technology during a period of rapid industrialization and mounting national attention to the inequities of a separate-but-equal social order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refutes the common notion that inventors were lone geniuses
Rayvon Fouche's Black Inventors In The Age Of Segregation: Granville T. Woods, Lewis H. Latimer, And Shelby J. Davidson refutes the common notion that inventors were lone geniuses who worked in relative isolation in the late 19th-early 20th century world. Most indeed developed their ideas within industrial organizations that supported their experiments: for blacks, this meant real challenges in working on innovative designs while breaking social barriers. Fouche here uses the lives and works of Granville Woods, Lewis Latimer and Shelby Davidson to detail the social frustrations underlying their research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
Professor Fouche has written a fabulous book!Black Inventors in the Age of Segregation is clearly the most thoroughly researched book on black inventors to date.He provides a detailed account of how difficult it was for black inventors to succeed in a segregated society. His book describes the experiences of three black inventors and explains their importance to African American people in the twentieth century. This is a must read for anyone wanting to know more about black inventors, their inventions, and their lives, as well as those interested in African American history and the history of invention. ... The picture on the cover is actually one of the best in this book. The rest of the pictures are so very uninteresting. To be sent back to Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul of Kashmir Captured by John Isaac
This book is one of the true fine photography books published. The paper and inks used are far higher quality than those mass produced in China. As you may know, publishers only do that for the best of the best artists - maybe one in a thousand.

The book spans landscape to intimate portrait photography. There is a short series of a father and son within the book that is so emotional that one can feel the love between them. Each of his photographs draws the viewer in until one feels no longer apart but entangled within the setting.

During a talk that I attended, he told how he spent weeks getting to know small groups and specific families until he became part of the backdrop and his picture taking was welcomed. One of his photographs won a $25,000 contract.Although he had already paid generously ($20) for the photograph and gotten written permission from the subject, he returned to India and found the family again. When he discovered the holy man who had been the subject was ill, he paid all his medical bills and gave money to his son for future care.Listening to him, I realized that he doesn't just photograph people but uses his photography to show his love for them.

If you would like to see two galleries of his photos and the long list of awards that include an international lifetime achievement award, check out his website at [...] .

I hope one day that I can take photographs that have the same power and depth as his does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing photos, book and photographer
I recently met John in Austin TX. What a treat! He explained how and why he created the book. One story that he told me was how he spent weeks getting to know people and was then allowed to photograph them. John's photos have effected foreign policy and the fate of thousands of people.

Well composed photos and wonderful use of color makes this book something special in my library and a book that I will cherish for years.

3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I am a long-time collector of photography books, including photographer's monographs and books focusing on specific regions or people, and would probably rate myself as an "advanced amateur" in terms of my own abilities. I really looked forward to getting this book after seeing the reviews -- it is a region I'd love to travel to. When I got the book, I was... disappointed. It took me a few turns through the book to figure out why.

The publisher's promo calls Mr. Isaac a "world-renowned photographer." I'd never heard of him but, well, OK, I took that on faith to mean that the book would offer up world-class photographs. That's not the case. Unfortunately, Isaac's work rarely rises above the level of the postcard shots taken by moderately talented tourists. It's hard to take a bad shot in a place like this -- a region with such spectacular scenery, colorful (literally) people, and a troubled history. India and Pakistan point nukes at each other over this Shangri-La. Isaac should have dug deeper and offered a "vision" that is unique and compelling and that gets across both the physical beauty and the history of this place. Many or most of the shots seem to be taken from the same perspective, with the same lighting, the same blah.... etc.Very few pics stand out -- ones that you say, "Man, I'd pay money for a print of that to hang on my wall." I kept thinking what could have been done by color photogs like Steve McCurry or Sam Abell or B&W masters like Salgado or Antonin Kratochvil.

I gave this book 3 stars instead of two because it's still interesting, particularly if you are curious about Kashmir or hope to travel there. But mostly, it's a book that seems designed for the waiting area in your dentist's office.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty of The Vale of Kashmir
The Vale of Kashmir by John Isaac is by far the finest book I've seen to date on the magical state of Kashmir.John's photos and text demonstrate how passionate he is about the revealing the beauty of Kashmir and it's people. He concentrates, not on the political issues of the day but on the true and lasting beauty of Kashmir, its scenery, people and culture. Each of his incredible photographs shows this splendor not only in the breathtaking quality of the photo itself but in how he reaches to the very soul of the Kashmiri people and the land in which they live. One senses the kindness and compassion of the people through John's photos as well as being awed by his magnificent landscapes.By western standards Kashmir is a poor country although reading through The Vale of Kashmir one understands its great richness in culture and beauty, be it from friendly smiles, exquisite handicrafts or the magnificent landscapes. What John Isaac wants most to accomplish is a true understanding of this land and for people from around the world to visit and enjoy Kashmir in all it's grandeur.Read and Enjoy! ... Read more
