Product Description
The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook broke new ground when it was first published in 1980, detailing easy, step-by-step techniques for calming the body and mind in an increasingly overstimulated world. Now in its sixth edition, this workbook, highly regarded by therapists and their clients, remains the "go-to" source for stress reduction strategies that can be incorporated into even the busiest lives.

This new edition is updated with powerful relaxation techniques based on the latest research, and draws from a variety of proven treatment methods, including progressive relaxation, autogenics, self-hypnosis, visualization, and mindfulness and acceptance therapy.

In the first chapter, you'll explore your own stress triggers and symptoms, and learn how to create a personal plan for stress reduction. Each chapter features a different method for relaxation and stress reduction, explains why the method works, and provides on-the-spot exercises you can do to apply that method when you feel stressed. The result is a comprehensive yet accessible workbook that will help you to curb stress and cultivate a more peaceful life.

Amazon.com Review
Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initialhyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deepbreath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presentedin this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise forpresenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, andthe multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organizedchapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and bodyawareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques totry and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stressmanagement, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focuson daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifyingkey elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differentlyto these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For thisedition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department ofPsychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), ElizabethRobbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser PermanenteOnline), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-AshburyPsychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worrycontrol, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and amore reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typosand graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
This is probably the first self-help book I ever read and it was very helpful in reducing my stress.I'm happy to see that the authors have done a nice job of continuing to update the principles and tools.I think this is particularly useful for someone who wants an overview of the strategies that are available and not so great if you have read a lot of self-help books about stress and anxiety. The workbook format is also helpful as reading a book is minimally effective if you don't make an effort to enact the tools provided. You will get a lot more out of this book if you use the workbook -rather than just reading the material. If you are having a hard time relaxing or don't want to take a lot of time out to practice stress reduction strategies - try the book Active Relaxation.Active Relaxation: How to Increase Productivity and Achieve Balance by Decreasing Stress and Anxiety

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Be Gone
This book is a great tool to use in finding out more about yourself and how your own body responds to external stimulants that have been creating symptoms unawaredly inside yourself due to a big bully (STRESS).Its not eternal truth but definitely a good resource to assist you in understanding your human body and your default coping methods to our world while helping you in learning how to manage these issues through clinically proven techniques that can now be done anytime or anyplace with the help of "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook."

3-0 out of 5 stars Over kill
I bought this book for my mother and my mother in law (whom I love by the way)as a reference to stress management. The comment they both gave me was while it was a comprehensive book It was a bit overwhelming. The book had so many different approaches to the problem that they didn't know where to start or what part to focus on. I then recently sent them another book called Invisible Valium: The Philosophy for Overcoming Stress and Anxiety (Volume 1) and they loved it, because it was short and to the point with real life examples. So now they keep one in their library and the other in there purse for quick reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This book will give you an understanding of all the ways you could reduce stress and help you decide which options will work best for you. Excellent!!

3-0 out of 5 stars allright
the book is okay

it contains a verity of exercises proven to work,

the problem is that in the book... they are so complicated,

in books like Cognitive Therapy of Anxiety Disorders: Science and Practice explained in less that one sentence,

instead of a whole page, after reading books like "the invisible gorilla" i think not too many people can do that much multitasking.

its alright i guess, way too overcomplicated

i recommend reading house of cards by robyn dawes.. ... Read more

Product Description

Thoughts and Feelings adapts the powerful and widely adaptable techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into a set of tools readers can use, not to solve a particular problem, but to overcome any of the emotional and behavioral changes that life throws their way. CBT recognizes that most negative feelings arise from confused, irrational thoughts. By learning to identify and change these thoughts and by replacing destructive and limiting behaviors with new, more constructive ones, readers can start steering their lives in the direction they want to go.

Changes to this new edition include revisions and updates to the core CBT chapters as well as a new chapter on how to use mindfulness to bring focus and intention to the process of change.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not for Kindle
Other reviewers have dealt well reviewing the book, so I will comment only on it's format for Kindle. It's not acceptable. There is no Table of Contents. There are no links.None.There are several charts which don't work at all.And the style of the book, with no separations or inconsistent separations between paragraphs, is very unpleasant and crowded.

If you are willing to work around those problems, the material in the book may be helpful.I am considering returning this because I believe it is unwise to give economic incentive to producers of poorly adapted e-books, especially considering the limitations of e-books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased the book in "used" condition for far less than the sale price if I had bought it new. It arrived quickly and looked like it was brand new and had never been opened. I was thoroughly pleased with the condition of the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Workbook
My therapist suggested that I get Thoughts and Feelings, and so I did. It's a workbook based on cognitive behavioral therapy, which it briefly discusses in the opening chapter. Its 21 chapters are dedicated to different emotions and gives readers ways to confront their thoughts and emotions, understand them, and work through them for a positive outcome.I think it's very useful either for people who adhere to the tenents of this school to psychology or for those who don't know anything about it.For example, the chapter Coping with Panic begins with describing what this disorder is.Then, the chapter moves through several phases: Symptom Effectiveness, Time for Mastery, and Insructions divided in four steps. The four steps take the reader through understanding what panic is, learning how to use breath control to reduce panic, learning how to "restructure" thoughts through examing probability outcomes (a work chart is used for this process), and desensitizing oneself to overcome the problem (again, charts are used to follow the process). Throughout the chapter several examples are used so that readers can better understand the exercises and outcomes. Finally, the chapter concludes with "Special Considerations" in case the reader has difficulties during the exercises and afterward. Each chapter is structured in the same way and methodically takes the reader through the process of identifying and overcoming the problem presented.I've never worked with a book like this, but I think it's a valuable tool to accompany therapy sessions, giving, in a sense, homework that reinforces what is learned or discussed in sessions. It would also be a useful tool for someone to use independently because of its clear explanations along the way, the tight structure of the chapters' exercises, and the examples related to each process. The language throughout is down-to-earth, not "psychobabble," and not speaking over the readers' heads. The writing style is crisp and clear, and people will have no trouble understanding anything discussed along the way.Although I don't wholeheartedly subscribe to cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, I believe that it's a useful method for gaining insight into how one thinks and why and how one can make positive changes in thinking and feeling.I'd highly recommend the book for anyone seeking help with troubled thinking, either as a companion to therapy or as a tool to work with alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic guide
This book helps us recognize the power of negative thinking and how we can take charge instead of being a victim. I find that this approach perfectly complements mindfulness meditation, which is highly recommended for cultivating balance in relation to thoughts and feelings. I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts & Feelings
Thoughts & Feelings is a fantastic, easy-to-read self-help workbook utilising the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is a type of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and validated for a range of mental health problems and is considered to be the treatment of choice for many disorders, such as depression and anxiety.

Thoughts & Feelings contains chapters dedicated to common problems such as coping with panic, worry control, depressive thinking, overcoming phobias, controlling anger and relaxation techniques, such as mindfulness. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic and contains some useful background information plus loads of exercises to help the reader deal with the problem. The workbook contains activity pages that the reader can write on to undertake the activity or exercise.

I would recommend this workbook for anyone wanting to overcome the specific problems that are the central features of this book, namely depression, anxiety, phobias, worry, anger, stress and panic.

I would also recommend this book to CBT therapists to use with their clients as the authors use jargon-free and easy-to-read language that clients with no prior knowledge of CBT would easily understand. As such, the workbook will aide therapists in explaining the CBT model to cleints. Furthermore, the activities are great at tackling the core thoughts that are believed to maintain common client problems such as depressionn or anxiety. ... Read more

Product Description

In 1965, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen gathered at the base of Mt. Tamalpais, a lovely small mountain in Marin County that anchors the San Francisco Bay on its northwest side. Inspired by Tibetan and Indian practices of walking clockwise — “the way of the sun” — around a venerated object, they “opened the mountain” by completing the first circumambulation. They did it again two years later, a month after the “Human Be-in” in Golden Gate Park, and with greater company as they invited the public to join them. The practice has continued almost uninterrupted for forty years, with Matthew Davis finding an organizing role on April 8, 1971, the Buddha's birthday, when he first led the walk. He has led the celebrations more than 140 times since.

The ritual walk — slightly less than 15 miles in length — marks the four quarters of the year. Ten way stations have been established for ceremonial chanting and prayer. With 80 remarkable photographs by Michael Farrell Scott, lovely drawings and maps, chants and poems, this book documents not only this particular spiritual practice but offers guidance for others wishing to establish similar practices in their own areas.

Product Description

At 23, Matt Davis moved to a remote Mongolian town to teach English. What he found when he arrived was a town—and a country—undergoing wholesale change from a traditional, countryside existence to a more urban, modern identity. When Things Get Dark documents these changes through the Mongolians Matt meets, but also focuses on the author's downward spiral into alcohol abuse and violence--a scenario he saw played out by many of the Mongolian men around him. Matt's self-destruction culminates in a drunken fight with three men that forces him to a hospital to have his kidneys X-rayed. He hits bottom in that cold hospital room, his body naked and shivering, a bloodied Mongolian man staring at him from an open door, the irrational thought in his head that maybe he is going to die there. His personal struggles are balanced with insightful descriptions of customs and interactions, and interlaced with essays on Mongolian history and culture that make for a fascinating glimpse of a mysterious place and people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally enjoyable read
This intimate and engaging memoir touches on dark, difficult issues with little melodramatic flourish.Admittedly, it was somewhat odd to enjoy reading about long-term culture shock and immersion, depression, domestic violence, development, etc.

You may not fall in love with Mongolia. You may never visit Mongolia. You may never even meet a Mongolian person in your lifetime.Even so, this memoir is worth reading for its quality and its glimpse into a narrow window in the history of an Asian nation standing in the shadow of globalization, poised somewhere between the longing for a glorified past and the rocky trajectory to democratization.

In fact, this book introduces several themes of pan-Asian significance.(I particularly appreciated the insight into the role of Buddhist clergy in legitimizing the rule of past Mongolian leaders, as well as the author's suggestions for further reading.)

A totally enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!
Matthew Davis witnessed a quickly changing Mongolia. His memoir preserves a brief moment in history like a bee caught in amber. This is an honest memoir written in sparse American-lean. His journalism background served him well.

Flown to Mongolia in the year 2000, a twenty-three year old Davis was assigned to teach English in a remote hamlet struggling with change. Only eleven years after the Soviet retreat following nearly seven decades of occupation, the country has been beset by a series of natural disasters that have nearly expunged their livelihood- animals. With dwindling economic means, nation-wide migration to the cities and even foreign lands was underway. Davis found a people beleaguered by the fierce winds of want who found solace in drink. He, far from home, also took to drink.

The landscape and climate are foreboding. Winter temperatures rival those in Alaska. Unlike most of Alaska, there were roads. On one of his trips overland during winter, the jeep in which he traveled stopped, dead. Outside with the driver, he noted that "a gust of wind rattled across the steppe and blew some loose snow on our bodies. The snot in my nose had already frozen."

Like all wild places on earth, Mongolia offered special obstacles. For instance, the marmot (a large ground squirrel) burrowed all over the steppes and was hunted. Unfortunately, it also can carry the Black Plague. "Every summer," explained the author," Mongolian newspapers run the Plague Alert (much as western states in the United States run fire alerts)." His own town was quarantined for several weeks. There were humorous obstacles as well. When trying to agree on a weekend meeting with a Mongolian peer, he bargained for Saturday since Sunday was Christmas Eve. The Mongolian replied, "No, I cannot do it Saturday. Saturday, the hot water comes, and I have lots of work to do."

Davis describes his surroundings well and also recounts relevant history. He includes many intimate details of his own life: how he drank, loved and fought. Nobody would have confused him with a Mormon missionary. It is refreshing to read a memoir by someone who did not aspire to be a living saint. Few things are harder to put up with than a good example.

This is not to say that the author had no good intentions. Upon returning to his living space, he was surprised to find it clean, bed made. This was quite a change. Before he left, the room had been strewn with filthy clothes, dirty plates, cigarette butts and even a several month old rotting fish. While he had been away, a drunken neighbor broke in with impolite thoughts but was caught. As punishment, he was required to clean the place up. The local police expected Davis to press charges and have his neighbor, a family man, thrown into the Mongolian pokey. "That man," one officer said, pointing outside to where the man was, "entered a foreigner's home. That is not good." Our volunteer, Huck Finn in the Orient, turned the other cheek.

Life in the bush mellows. Whether it be the enormity of nature or being part of the food chain, one cannot help but see things a bit differently. When asked what he had learned in his two years, the author replied, "The Wall Street Journal burns better than The New York Times." No greenhorn would have said that. Five stars. Check it out.

It is interesting to note that two other recently published books by former Peace Corps volunteers describe Uzbekistan after the Soviet retreat (Taxi to Tashkent by Tom Fleming and Chasing the Sea by Tom Bissell). They also describe abhorrent alcoholism rates. In addition, when recounting history, there is very little about the seven decades during Soviet occupation except mention of drab Soviet style buildings, the remnants of a secret police, stories about the suppression of religion and a population that speaks Russian. I suspect that the Soviets had other major influences upon culture: a great topic for a follow-up book by someone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Book
This book caught my eye recently. Here's my take on it.

First though, some background. As a kid I saw a movie about Genghis Khan and got interested in Mongolia. At the time - many years ago - it was communist and VERY isolated. Of course, it had always been isolated I guess - the word Mongolia used to be a virtual synonym for isolation at one time. (I must confess that I use it that way to make a point in a seminar that I give, but that is another story.) Needless to say, there was not much real information on it that I ever saw until quite recently and even now it seems minimal.

So, we now have this book. The author spent time in Mongolia recently as an English teacher and seems to have gotten immersed into the local situation in a time of great change. He lived in a ger - the circular tent looking house of Mongolia and took up some local habits. It seems winter there is pretty hard to say the least. Many bizarre anecdotes.

One of the local habits he took up was drinking a LOT and getting into at least one very violent fight - the scene with him in the hospital with kidney damage after that tells you how bad it was. A bit shocking, but maybe it tells us more about what things are really like there than we might get in say National Geographic.

Not you standard travelogue although there is some of that too. Give the author some credit for honesty, and he did seem to learn something important from the experience and not everyone might.

Some interesting perspective. Give it a try, but be warned that it is not for the faint of heart.

Product Description
During a period of forty years I was intimately acquainted with Colonel Burr, and have reason to suppose that I possessed his entire confidence. Some time after his return from Europe in 1812, on different occasions, he suggested casually a wish that I would make notes of his _political life_. When the Memoirs and Correspondence of Mr. Jefferson were published, he was much excited at the statements which were made in his Ana respecting the presidential contest in Congress in 1801.

He procured and sent me a copy of the work, with a request that I would peruse the parts designated by him. From this time forward he evinced an anxiety that I would prepare his Memoirs, offering me the use of all his private papers, and expressing a willingness to explain any doubtful points, and to dictate such parts of his early history as I might require. These propositions led to frequent and full conversations. I soon discovered that Colonel Burr was far more tenacious of his _military_, than of his professional, political, or moral character. His prejudices against General Washington were immoveable. They were formed in the summer of 1776, while he resided at headquarters; and they were confirmed unchangeably by the injustice which he said he had experienced at the hands of the commander-in-chief immediately after the battle of Long Island, and the retreat of the American army from the city of New-York. These grievances he wished to mingle with his own history; and he was particularly anxious to examine the military movements of General Washington on different occasions, but more especially at the battle of Monmouth, in which battle Colonel Burr commanded a brigade in Lord Stirling's division. I peremptorily refused entering upon any such discussion; and, for some time, all communication on the subject ceased.

Colonel Burr, however, renewed the conversation relative to his Memoirs, and agreed that any thing which might be written should be confined to himself. With this understanding I frequently visited him, and made notes under his dictation. I never asked him a question on any subject, or in relation to any man or measure, that he did not promptly and willingly answer. On his part there was no desire of concealment; nor did he ever express to me a wish to suppress an account of any act of his whole life. So far as I could judge, his only apprehensions were that "_kind friends_," as he sometimes termed them, by attempts at explanation, might unintentionally misrepresent acts which they did not understand.

Product Description
In Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus overrides the Old Testament teaching of 'an eye for eye and a tooth for a tooth' - the Lex Talionis law - and commands his disciples to turn the other cheek. James Davis asks how Jesus' teaching in this instance relates to the Old Testament talionic commands, how it relates to New Testament era Judaism and what Jesus required from his disciples and the church. Based on Old Testament texts such as Leviticus 24, Exodus 22 and Deuteronomy 19, a strong case can be made that the Lex Talionis law was understood to have a literal application. The text of Leviticus 24 provides the strongest case for a literal and judicial application. However, by the second century AD and later, Jewish rabbinic leadership was essentially unified and the Old Testament did not require a literal talion, but that financial penalties could be substituted in court matters. Yet there is evidence from Philo, Rabbi Eliezer and Josephus that in the first century AD the application of literal talion in judicial matters was a major and viable Jewish viewpoint at the time of Jesus.Jesus' instruction represents a different perspective from the Old Testament Lex Talionis texts and auguably from the Judaism of his time. Jesus commands the general principle of non retaliation against the evil person and intended this teaching to be concretely applied, as borne out in his own life. Product Description

Following in the footsteps of the late great Lester Bangs -- the most revered and irreverent of rock 'n' roll critics -- twenty-four celebrated writers have penned stories inspired by great songs. Just as Bangs cast new light on a Rod Stewart classic with his story "Maggie May," about a wholly unexpected connection between an impressionable young man and an aging, alcoholic hooker, the diverse, electrifying stories here use songs as a springboard for a form dubbed the lit riff.

Alongside Bangs's classic work, you'll find stories by J.T. LeRoy, who puts a recovering teenage drug abuser in a dentist's chair with nothing but the Foo Fighters's "Everlong" -- blaring through the P.A. -- to fight the pain; Jonathan Lethem, whose narrator looks back on his lost innocence just as an extramarital affair careens to an end -- this to the tune "Speeding Motorcycle" as recorded by Yo La Tengo; and Jennifer Belle, who envisions a prequel to Paul Simon's "Graceland" -- one that takes place at a children's birthday party replete with a real live kangaroo.

With original contributions from Tom Perrotta, Nelson George, Amanda Davis, Lisa Tucker, Aimee Bender, Darin Strauss, and many more -- riffing on everyone from Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen to the White Stripes, Cat Power, and Bob Marley -- this is both an astounding collection of short stories and an extraordinary experiment in words and music.

3-0 out of 5 stars reversi
Lit Riffs is a unique concept, one so obvious you'd smack yourself on the forehead for not having considered it:stories based on songs, when the reverse is quite common. The choices of songs to base a tale on is wildly disparate, which is cool.Thankfully this collection didn't go down the route of all easily recognizable pop songs.

More interesting than the book is the companion recording of cover versions of the songs that inspired Lit Riffs, soon to be released by S.A.M. records; My favorite track is the rendering of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah by the band Teenage Girls.Covers of Cohen songs tend toward the slavishly faithful;it's refreshing to hear a group make it seem new. ... Product Description
Both authors are PhDs in Psychology. Practically every advice written in this book is backed up by some empiracal evidence or study. The book covers all aspects of communication such as listening, body language, and influencing others using operant conditioning. One should note that this book focuses improving relationships through better communication. Hence, this book is not suitable for situations where antagonistic and competitive communication styles are warranted. For example, I thought the chapter on negotiation was poor due to the fact that the book promotes a "nice guy who will listen" approach to negotiation. Such approach to negotiation with no competitive strategic objective will spell disaster against a well seasoned negotiation sharks in a professional environment. Overall, the book offers solid scientifically based advice on personal communication. Just don't rely too much on it in a setting where competition, not cooperation, can be the norm. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for communication.
This book will take you step by step on what is going wrong when you are trying to communicate with someone. It will give you things to do so that you can see the difference in what you are doing and what they say you need to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the facts about interpersonal relationships
This book is excellent; the way a book on communication should be.This book is miles ahead of most other books in this field. These authors go straight to the point and do not waste your time with meaningless anecdotes and inspirational fluff.Nor does this book waste your time with nonsense advice which is solely based on some author's misguided notions. All the advice is grounded in empirical evidence and is explained clearly and concisely.

Would strongly recommend to anyone looking to truly improve on their not just their communication skills but also on interpersonal relationships as well.10/10.
