A childhood favorite
My all-time favorite childhood favorite.Every night, my mother and father would read this book to my brother and me (by request!)Twenty-five years later, I'm still taken back to those quiet evenings every time I read it.I hope to read it to my children one day.

Great Book for Little Ones!!
My children ages 2 and 4 love this book.It is a cute story about a catapillar exploring his new world, but finding out others aren't always nice. Curtis then becomes a beautiful butterfly and everyone wants to be his friend.The story teaches kids about being nice to someone no matter what they appear to be on the outside, but in a very simplistic way.We read it every night before bed.

A favorite in my house
My kids are now too old for Charlie the Catepillar.But when they were between the ages of 4 and 6, it was an absolute favorite and I read it practically every night!I recently gave away a bunch of old children's books.I couldn't part with Charlie.This is the sign of a special book.I hung onto it, along with Goodnight, Moon, The Giving Tree and The Velveteen Rabbit.I don't know if it's in that category of a "classic."But it is definitely special.A fun book with great illustrations anda good lesson. My kids had it memorized."Giddadda here!"

Not so cute
I was not impressed when I received this book from the the book club at our preschool.I think the message that no one wants to play with you if you are ugly, and then when you are beautiful you can go back and snub them is a terrible one.With the many issues our children face today - inappropriate role models in the media, anorexia, teenagers having plastic surgery - this message just reinforces those same ideas "I must be beautiful to be popular." I don't know why publishers feel they have to publish books by celebrities who are obviously not children's authors.I threw away all the copies of this book that we received.I would not recommend it to anyone, except as a lesson in why editors need to focus on what is good for children, not what celebrity names might sell books.

Charlie the Caterpiller
Excellent book for preschoolers and older. After being born, Charlie sets off to see the world. He meets monkeys, rabbits, and mice but all refuse to play with him because he is an ugly caterpiller. When Charlie becomes a beautiful butterfly, they all want to be his friend. Charlie saw Roslie, the caterpiller, crying because she couldn't find a friend. He tells her what is going to happen and they become friends. Story learning tools: Charlie looks to the left/right and goes straight ahead, when he builds his cocoon, and when animals tell him to "giddadda here".
