5-0 out of 5 stars "Thanks a lot, Gilligan !"
A well written, straightforward account of Bob Denver's experience as the characters Maynard G. Krebs (Dobie Gillis) and Willy Gilligan (Gilligan's Island). Many inciteful, behind-the-scene stories of both shows as well as his relationships with many of his costars and other celebrities. A must read for fans of either show. Let's hope Gilligan is resting comfortably on that "great deserted island in the sky" !

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read
I grew up watching Gilligan's Island, but now that I'm well into my 30s, I have a new appreciation for it.This book was very easy-to-read and entertaining.Bob Denver has a very affable writing style--you feel almost like he's sitting and having a conversation with you.I wish that he had included more about his personal life, but that was his choice, and I respect it.

Since his two most famous characters, Gilligan and Maynard G. Krebs, were not exactly brilliant, some people may be surprised to discover that Bob Denver is the exact opposite--he's very confident, intelligent, and well-read.This shows through in his book, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Gilligan, Maynard, or both.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much Gilligan, too little Bob.Maynard was fine.
I was a big fan of Dobie Gillis, and I loved seeing what Bob Denver's favorite episodes were. Some of them were my favorites too, like when Dobie and Maynard discussed their future after graduation from Highschool.Maynard was a great character that Bob Denver had the chance to addreal depth to.

On the other hand,I ODd on Gilligan reruns and had littleinterest in the Island show.I'm sure those sections about Gilligan's Islandwould be great for superfans of the series, and there appear to bemany...but I'm only marginal.

Bob Denver told little about his ownpersonal life in the book-his upbringing, previous jobs and the like-butthat was his choice and I'm sure he wrote the book more for fans ofGilligan and Maynard than those who wondered about Bob Denver himself. Ifthere had been more about him I just might have bought the book instead ofjust skimming through it at a library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful
I started with the book "Short Bike Rides in Colorado," which was okay, except the majority of the rides involved first driving 200-300 miles from Denver. The ride itself was short, but the entire trip would take sitting in traffic the whole day.

This book fits the bill much better.49 rides split between Denver and Boulder (appropriate title) of varying difficulty. The author includes not only the level of difficulty (technical and aerobic), but the type of trail (singletrack, doubletrack, ATV road, etc.) and how many miles of each the trail consists of.Extremely helpful, as I'm not a big fan of singletrack so I will probably save those trails for last.

I also appreciated the tiny bits of humor scattered throughout, particularly the definition of doubletrack where he states "the other rut will always look smoother."I biked Barr Lake after 3 days of pouring rain (learned my lesson, believe me) and this was exactly my experience!

I'm looking forward to exploring most of these trails soon. This book provides an excellent starting point to know where to go first.

EDIT:I'm guessing Mr. D'Antonio is assuming more than a basic level of skill in his readers.Waterton Canyon, which is rated a difficulty of 1, was basically a dirt road.Beautiful country and really, really easy.I hit Deer Creek Canyon next based on his rating of 2-3, thinking it couldn't be that much more difficult.

Either there has been some massive erosion since the book was published in 2003, or the author saves his highest rating of 5 for biking around the rim of an active volcano. The trail was INSANELY difficult and I ended up walking most of the first mile up before giving up and turning around. This trail includes the "Wall of Shame" which has several YouTube videos devoted to far more experienced bikers trying (and mostly failing) to navigate it.

I'll still use the book as a starting point to find trails, but will check out YouTube footage before packing up all my gear to head out for another fun-filled hour of pushing my bike uphill over near-impassable conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
It has good information about trails, but I cant seem to find any really technical trails near boulder.

3-0 out of 5 stars General/Practical
A good book to pick up if you are new to the area, but there are some trails in the area that are not mentioned in the book?

It is small enough to stuff in the back of your jersey pocket, or hydration pack.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the BEST book for mountain biking near Denver
I have purchased the FalconGuide books for Moab and Fruita both are great. But this is the one that I use almost daily. It has a ton of rides that are 30 minutes or less from where I live.I ride trails in this book 3 - 4 times weekly.I save the ones that are a little farther away for the weekend. But all in all a great book.Nice size to so you can take it with you when you ride.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of area trail networks
This book provides a good listing of trails in the Denver/Boulder area. There are maps for each trail and altitude charts to show the elevation gain. The directions to the trail heads are accurate.

The one thing Idon't like is that it only gives information about one trail for eachsystem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I also am very enthusiastic about having a copy of this book. There is information and pictures here that can't be found anywhere else.

I thought I'd provide some information about the book itself. It is a yearbook type presentation, 160 pp, glossy paper, about half color photos and about half black and white. I'd say it is about 60% images and about 40% text. Table of Contents: The Early Years 1960-1966, Growing Years 1967-1976, Beginnings of Excellence 1977-1984, Ring of Fame, Statistics. There are mini profiles of key players and coaches, 14 pp of the "Ring of Fame" (Hall of Fame.) And statistics -- 16 pp of them. (I particularly like the fact that time is spent on the very early years of the franchise. There's a picture of a game against Houston with the stands 80% empty. Got to have been a scrimmage or preseason or something.)

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more than 5 stars to give this one!
I love this book!Renovations done to Mile High Stadium as well as vintage photos of the Teams Uniforms and info on the Broncos Community are all covered.A rare piece of Mile high History published by the now defunct Denver based Special Productions Inc has more the look of a yearbook than a mass produced publication.A former player inquired about purchasing my copy at a recent autograph session. How often does the person signing an item offer to buy it?A very good question to ponder when considering this.A great collectors item for the true fan of the Orange Crush!

Excerpt: Robert Lee Howsam (February 28, 1918 February 19, 2008) was an executive in American professional sport who, in 1959, played a key role in establishing two leagues the American Football League, which succeeded and merged with the National Football League, and baseball's Continental League, which never played a game but forced expansion of Major League Baseball from 16 to 20 teams in 1961-62. Howsam later became well-known as the highly successful general manager and club president of the Cincinnati Reds during the "Big Red Machine" dynasty of the 1970s. Born in Denver, Colorado, Howsam served as a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II. In 1959, he founded the Denver Broncos one of the eight charter members of the AFL along with his brother, Earl Howsam, and father, Lee. (The Howsams and the seven other original owners called themselves the "Foolish Club" for daring to take on the established NFL.) The Howsams also built Bears Stadium, a minor league baseball park which, after renovation and expanded capacity, became famous as the Broncos' noisy, raucous and perpetually sold-out home from 1960-2001, Mile High Stadium. The Broncos played in the AFL from 1960-69 and then joined the NFL with completion of the NFL/AFL merger in 1970. Apart from a 7-7 season in 1962, the team suffered from poor results on the field, and the Howsam family sold the Broncos in 1964 to Gerald and Alan Phipps. But it was developing a loyal fan base, and since its first Super Bowl appearance in 1977, the Broncos have become one of the most successful operations in the NFL. The Broncos may have struggled in the early 1960s, but Bob Howsam would prove himself to be a highly successful baseball executive. He led the family-owned Denver Bears of the Class A W... Excerpt: Mark Canterbury (born March 16, 1964) is an American professional wrestler, best known for his stint in the World Wrestling Federation under the ring name Henry O. Godwinn. Canterbury trained under George South and the Italian Stallion before debuting in 1989 under the ring name "Mean" Mark Canterbury. He quickly formed a tag team with Dennis Knight who would be wrestling as Tex Slazenger. He is currently working for OCW, or NEWOCW (Ohio Championship Wrestling. A wrestling organization in Ashland Kentucky. In October 1992, the duo began wrestling for World Championship Wrestling, with Canterbury adopting the ring name Shanghai Pierce. Dusty Rhodes suggested that Canterbury wear a mask because Canterbury's good looks could make him too likable for the heel tag team. The two where known as the Texas Hangmen. They remained with the promotion until 1994. In the mid 1994, Canterbury joined the World Wrestling Federation, where he was renamed Henry Orpheus Godwinn and given the gimmick of an Arkansan pig farmer who carried a bucket of "slop" to the ring, which he would throw upon his opponents. Canterbury was originally a heel, and assisted the Million Dollar Corporation on several occasions. When the leader of the Corporation, Ted DiBiase, was asked on an episode of WWF Action Zone whether or not Canterbury was a member of the Corporation, however, DiBiase instead insulted Canterbury. This inspired Canterbury to turn face by "slopping" DiBiase, and led to a brief feud between Canterbury and Corporation member Sycho Sid. Godwinn engaged in a feud with the aristocratic Hunter Hearst Helmsley. The feu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2107096 ... Read more
