Excerpt: Ken Johnson (born January 5, 1951) was an all-star quarterback in the Canadian Football League. Johnson was a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he played from 1971 to 1973 and earned a degree in marketing. He began his professional career in 1974 as a back-up quarterback for the World Football League's Portland Storm. In June, 1977, Johnson was signed as a free agent by the National Football League's Buffalo Bills. Though he was on the active roster for 14 games, he saw no action with the Bills and was released on August 22, 1978. A month later, Johnson signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Seeing limited action in 1978, Johnson earned the Stampeders' starting job in 1979. Appearing in all 16 regular season games, Johnson completed 56.4% of his passes (176 of 312) for 2344 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions as he led the Stampeders to a 12-4 record and a CFL playoff berth. After falling one win short of the Grey Cup game in 1979, Johnson followed up with another solid season in 1980 setting a career high in touchdown passes (22) while completing 56.0% of his passes (218 of 389) for 3019 yards. Johnson would also set a career high with 16 interceptions as the Stampeders finished 9-7 and were eliminated in the first round of the CFL playoffs. The Stampeders slide would continue in 1981, which likely led to Johnson being traded after 12 games to the Montreal Alouettes on October 11, 1981. Overall, he would appear in 15 games that season, completing a career high 59.3% of his passes (254 of 428) for 3364 yards, 18...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19175128 ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
What marches this amply illustrated tribute downfield with theverve of a two-minute drill is the collection of tribute offerersthemselves. John Elway's 10 chapters are built on the testimonyof 10 witnesses--Bronco players and opponents--to the future Hall ofFamer quarterback's excellence, longevity, creativity, and coolness:the lineup includes Denver coaches Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan;teammates Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, and Ed McCaffrey; andopposition field marshalls Brett Favre and Jim Kelly. Under gameconditions, all would be assessed yardage for piling it on; thenagain, an elegy's game plan is to praise without penalty, and praisethey certainly do.

Still, Elway offers its perspectives, none more cogent than that of defensive lineman Neil Smith, who spentnine seasons as a Chief huffing and puffing after Elway beforeultimately joining him in Denver. "I had the most sacks (15) againstJohn," Smith admits proudly, "and it's probably because he took me toanother level when I played against him... But after you'd sack him, really crush him, he'd just get up and grin... and come back and throwa touchdown on you. That hurt." It also captures Elway's brilliance ina nutshell: his skills made the game better, and his spirit never lethim give up. If that doesn't deserve appreciation, nothing in sportsdoes, and Elway, like a crafty receiver, catches both halves ofthat equation quite nicely. --Jeff Silverman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective
This is one of the best books one can find about John Elway.Sure, it misses much of the autobiographical details, but it gets down to business quite well, distilling John's football life into its essential components. Its strength arises from diversity of perspective. Not only do you hear Mike Shannahan's memories and opinions, but also Dan Reeve's and the words have a healing effect for us long term fans.Likewise, hearing not only from key Bronco team mates but also from his rivals gives one the complete story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Was a birthday present
I got this book from my wife as a birthday present, and immediately sat down and read it cover to cover. I knew a lot ofthe info in the book already, having been a Bronco fan since 1972, but it did refresh a lot of old (and somewhat painful) memories. I feel this book is a "must have" for any Bronco/Elway fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars good keepsake
Interesting comments from other players, but not a lot of new information for fans who have followed John's career. Nice book to have for a sports collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great book for all Broncos fans.A++++
This book (Biography of John Elway) shows not only History of John Elway, but also of his Teamates and other Players around the NFL .This book is loaded with Players, Coaches, and the Owner of the Denver Broncos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of John Elways career by others
This book offers commentary and descriptins of John Elway by other NFL teammates, players, and coaches.Included are chapters by Mike Shanahan, Terrell Davis, Brett Favre, Dan Reeves, and Clay Matthews (who played forthe Cleveland Browns, against the Broncos in 3 AFC Championship games). Each individual's comments are very interesting, as they all offer adifferent perspective.

The only drawback is that the book appears to havebeen completed before Super Bowl 33; so Dan Reeves does not offer his viewson coaching *against* Elway in a Super Bowl.A minor critique, though, ashe still provides an interesting read.

The book is also filled with manyexcellent photos from Elway's NFL and college days. ... Read more

Excerpt: John Davidson (born February 27, 1953 in Ottawa, ON), is the president of hockey operations of the St. Louis Blues and a former goaltender for the St. Louis Blues (197375) and New York Rangers (197583) of the National Hockey League. He is also well-known as a long-time hockey broadcaster. On June 4, 2009, it was announced that Davidson would be honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame with the 2009 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his contributions to broadcasting. Growing up in western Canada, he played his minor hockey in Calgary, Alberta. He was drafted fifth overall in 1973, and became the first goalie in NHL history to jump directly from major junior to the NHL. While his hockey career was fraught with many significant injuries, he is perhaps best remembered (as a player) for leading the Rangers to the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals on an injured left knee. His jersey numbers were 35, 00 and 30. Davidson was accidentally the inspiration for the title song of the 1978 hit album Double Vision by the rock group Foreigner. Members of the band were watching a Stanley Cup Playoff game between Davidson's New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. Members of the band were fans of the Rangers. Davidson was shaken up when an unknown member of the Sabres took a hard shot that hit Davidson's goalie mask. As he was recovering, announcers Jim Gordon and Bill Chadwick said Davidson was suffering from "Double Vision." After retiring due to injury, he joined MSG's ho...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2650665 ... Read more

Excerpt: Selected by Baltimore Bullets Lawrence Harvey "Larry" Brown (born September 14, 1940) is an American basketball coach and former player, the current head coach of the National Basketball Association's Charlotte Bobcats. He has been a college and professional basketball coach since 1975. He has won over 1,000 professional games in the ABA and the NBA and is the only coach in NBA history to lead eight different teams to the playoffs. He is also the only person ever to coach two NBA franchises in the same season (San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers during the 199293 NBA season). He is 1,285853 in his career. He is also the only coach in history to win both an NCAA National Championship (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004). Brown was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach on September 27, 2002 and is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. Brown was born in Brooklyn, New York. A 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) point guard, he attended Long Beach High School and then played at the University of North Carolina under Frank McGuire and the legendary coach Dean Smith after playing high school basketball in New York. A stellar player for the Tar Heels in the early 1960s, Brown was considered too small to play in the NBA and so began his professional career with the NABL's Akron Wingfoots, where he played for two years (196465). During that time Brown was selected for the 1964 Summer Olympics team while leading the Wingfoots to the 1964 AAU National Championship. After a brief stint as an assistant coach at North Carolina, Brown joined the upstart American Basketball Association, playing with the New Orleans Buccaneers (196768), Oakland Oaks (196869), Washington Caps (196970), Virginia Squires (197071)... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pueblo and Co. Sprs. Rock hounds Get This
Bob Horn has obviously gone to every one of these areas, or gathered info from other climbers and detailed them well in this book. His line drawings and sketches are better then usual and are easy to find and follow.
My only gripe is that a lot of the southern front range bouldering classics are on private property and no directions are given to several areas. I think when a climber is accessing private property, a simple stop at the owners residence will often gain you legal access to these precious gems.
From and ex-greenhorn valley dweller, enjoy!
