This was a great book. It told all about Johnny Depp and all his trials & tribulations. I appreciated the truth which which the book was written.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book..........BUT!
On pages 62 and 63 there is a picture of Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando in a scene from The Brave. The caption indicates it's a scene from Don Juan DeMarco. I just got the book and skimmed through the pictures so I haven't really read it yet. But this error was as plain as day when I turned to those pages. It still wouldn't stop me from purchasing it. This book in hardback was very hard to get, but I got lucky. I'm sure there are other errors in the book but the fans know from the tons of bios out about him. This one's great for diehard fans. ... Product Description

Johnny Depp enjoys a fan base quite unlike any other modern-day star — grown women sigh over his sexiness, children adore him as Willy Wonka, hipsters relate to his subversive streak. The Johnny Depp Photo Album documents its subject’s unstoppable rise via a wealth of film stills and candid shots away from the set. It chronicles every step of Depp's career: cult films like Benny and Joon; current releases like the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Sweeney Todd; his drunken, bad-boy period; and his affairs with Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. It also reveals Depp’s life away from the madness of Hollywood — there are rare glimpses of his life partner, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children, whom he aggressively shields from the media spotlight. Through its irresistible array of color and black and white images, this strikingly designed tribute reveals the family man who just happens to be the greatest screen star on the planet.

4-0 out of 5 stars a serious study
A little strange that, given the global popularity of Johnny Depp in several successful movies, no one has already reviewed this book. It's not what you might first think; ie. a quickie expose of Depp, interspliced with salacious or outrageous tidbits. Instead, it is a serious and scholarly biography. Not sensationalistic at all. I deliberately say scholarly, because it is extensively footnoted, as befits an academic output.

The authors analyse Depp's movies and what has been published in various sources about his life. His roles are thoughtfully critiqued. We see his development and maturation as an actor. Playing quite varied roles. The book is of course incomplete, because hopefully Depp has many decades ahead of him, to further make his mark. ... Read more

Product Description
Not only is Johnny Depp a huge star, but his unconventional choice of movie roles has made him a fascinating and mysterious character. With appearances in both children and adult films such as Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Public Enemies, Depp has a mass market cross- generational appeal. From his debut in Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 through to his flamboyant turn as the voice of Victor Van Dort in Corpse BrideDepp has successfully carved a niche for himself as a serious, somewhat dark, idiosyncratic performer, consistently selecting roles that surprised critics and audiences alike. Aside from his on-screen life, Depp has dated several female celebrities, including failed engagements to Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder, and Kate Moss. He was married to Lori Anne Allison in 1983 but they divorced in 1985. Currently, Depp is living with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children: Lily-Rose Melody, born in 1999 and Jack, born in 2002. He has also had a wild parallel career as a rock musician with involvement in the elite party scene in LA - Depp was in the Viper Room club the night River Phoneix overdosed. This definitive biography charts every aspect of the charismatic actor's life. ... Product Description

How do we even describe the alienated beauty of Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Donnie Brasco, Don Juan DeMarco, Captain Jack Sparrow and Sweeney Todd, apart from the prodigious gift of Johnny Depp? How do we even name these great characters in one sentence, except under the heading of his contrary, heat-seeking curiosity, and imagination? If he didnt exist, you would need at least six other actors to achieve what he has thus far in his career. Few are so angelically androgynous and masculine in the same breath. From teen hearth-throb to an accomplished actor who has worked with art house directors such as Emir Kusturica, Terry Gilliam, Roman Polanski, Jim Jarmusch, and John Waters, Depp has built himself wildly successful and unconventional career. Movie Icons is a series of photo books that feature the most famous personalities in the history of cinema. These 192-page books are visual biographies of the stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely collection
In this fantastic series of books, subtitled Movie*Icons, Taschen has produced book after book highlighting a variety of film stars that the world all knows and loves. The introductions of the books are offered in English, French, and German, for readers around the world to enjoy; but the pictures - from the stills to the movie clips - are truly what make these books outstanding.

Johnny Depp was first introduced to the American public by means of a television show called 21 Jump Street. Almost immediately, his beautiful looks and high cheekbones got him plastered on the covers of every teen magazine in the free world. Like the boys of Twilight are to the world nowadays, Johnny once ruled young teenage girls' hearts everywhere. Soon, however, he decided he really didn't like the fame that came with his "idol" status, and wanted to be something more. He wanted more than anything to use his acting skills to actually bring remarkable characters to the screen and tell unforgettable stories to the public.

His very first success at this was the wonderfully kind, sweet character of Edward Scissorhands. Johnny certainly dropped his "handsome" exterior for this role, letting his sad, dark eyes captivate the audience. Not only was this one of his most powerful performances, but it also began the team of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton - a team that has brought to the screen a "masterpiece" every single time they've come together to make a film.

The "Bad Boy of Hollywood," which was Depp's main career, was soon behind him, and the actor emerged as one of the finest in Hollywood. Gone was the young man who ruined hotel rooms, tattooed women's names on his arms, and focused his work on music. In fact, right around the time River Phoenix overdosed and passed away outside of Johnny's club The Viper Room, was when Mr. Depp seemed to turn his back on the press and his petulant past, and set his sights on becoming the best actor he could possibly be.

From the funny and poignant characters like Ed Wood, to the slightly creepy, elusive roles like Sweeney Todd, to the completely odd, Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Depp has managed to become a multitude of different people without ever pigeon-holing himself into a certain genre. In What's Eating Gilbert Grape, he was a young man who had to get out from his small town and leave behind the problems he simply couldn't face. In Don Juan DeMarco and Chocolat' he became that leading man that all females fall off their chairs for, as soon as he opens his mouth and that fantastic voice slithers smoothly from the screen.

There are so many Oscar-worthy performances that it's completely impossible to name all of them in this review, but the photographs offered will bring readers back to the first time they were mesmerized by Depp on screen. Now that Johnny has settled down, found his Mrs. (don't we all hate her), and had children of his own, his biggest roles seem to be that of calm citizen, happy man, loving father, and, thankfully, the immortal Captain Jack Sparrow.

Quill Says: Where Depp is concerned, we all wait with our collective breath held to see what amazing role he will come up with next. A man who decided to go his own way, Depp has literally been entertaining us for years and, hopefully, for many years to come. This book is a lovely collection of pictures for all fans to enjoy.

Product Description
Since his rise to fame in the television series 21 Jump Street in 1987 and his subsequent transition to film acting, Johnny Depp has received constant criticism for his choice of roles--at least until his popular turn in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. This book aims to reveal the ways in which Depp's choices of film roles, though often considered eccentric, allowed him to develop into the representative film actor of his time. It organizes all of Depp's films chronologically, narrating in the process his transition from underestimated teenage pretty boy to bona fide Hollywood hotshot. Along the way, the book addresses Depp's relationship to earlier film actors, especially to Marlon Brando and the silent comics; the influence of Depp's androgynous sexuality on both his choice of roles and his acting; and his relationships with directors Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly, Overpriced Slog Through Johnny Depp's Film Career!
You have to give Johnny Depp credit. He's certainly been daring in the choice of films he's made; talk about variety! The critical and box-office response to his films has been equally varied. Retired film professor William Parrill examines Depp's TV and film career in this scattershot release from McFarland & Company.

After a brief, somewhat psychological introduction to Depp, Parrill examines each of his films in chronological order along with his work on "21 Jump Street." Depending on the film, these film 'debriefs' run between one and ten pages. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" rates 10 pages; "Sweeney Todd," nine; and "Dead Men" and the first "Pirates of the Caribbean;" eight.

Unfortunately I have several problems with THE FILMS OF JOHNNY DEPP. First, since I haven't seen many of Depp's films, I was hoping Parrill might help me fill in the gaps. Unfortunately, in reading through the book, I kept thinking: "What's the title of this thing again?" Time and again, Parill barely detailed the plot of a particular movie before going into endlessly detailed discussions of what various critics thought of the movie, background information on the movie, etc. Sometimes I wondered if Parill had seen the movies himself since he quoted other reviewers so heavily.

Likewise the tone of the book is awfully scholarly. There's much dissection but little excitement to be found in the book's 214 pages.

Lastly, the price - $55.00 - is outrageous. What was McFarland thinking of?

So, for a number of reasons, I'm giving THE FILMS OF JOHHNY DEPP a thumb's down. It might be great for a college-level film history class but, for the rest of humanity, it doesn't deliver the goods. Not recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
If you're looking for an in-depth analysis of directors and films that just happened to involve Johnny Depp, you will probably find this book interesting. If you're looking for in-depth information on Mr. Depp and his personal involvement in these films, save your money. The author writes like the professor he is so be prepared for flowery language and long passages of background material which may or may not be relevant. Each movie analysis also contains reviews from other film critics, and the author seems to delight in the bad ones. Were you to know nothing about Mr. Depp, you'd think he's appeared in one bomb after another. Perhaps this is just my sensitivities as opposed to that of the author, but insinuating Mr. Barrie may have been a pedophile, and then comparing Willy Wonka to Michael Jackson effectively ruined both these movies for me from here on out. I did have to smile, however, when he said the children in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" were "brutalized." I suppose by these standards Wile E Cuyote was brutalized by the Roadrunner -- what with all those falling anvils. And as others have mentioned, there are several errors in information about Mr. Depp -- ie., the tattoo over his heart, and also the fact that his first Oscar nomination was for the first POTC movie, not "Finding Neverland." If you're looking for facts and nothing else about movies, you may enjoy/be interested in this book. If you're looking for a "good read" - skip it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly analysis of his roles, acting, and achievements perfect for any serious film library
The Films of Johnny Depp is a 'must' reference for any in-depth film library compiling listings of major actors and film achievements. It follows Johnny Depp's film roles from his rise to fame in 21 Jump Street's 1987 TV debut to modern times, offering insights of his films in chronological order to trace his development as an actor. The result is a scholarly analysis of his roles, acting, and achievements perfect for any serious film library.

John Christopher Johnny Depp II (born June 9, 1963) is an American actor and musician known for his portrayals of offbeat, eccentric characters such as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Sam in Benny & Joon.

Depp rose to prominence in a lead role on the television series 21 Jump Street and quickly became regarded as a teen idol. Uncomfortable with that characterization, he turned his focus to film roles that he felt were right. He initially came to film prominence as the titular character of Edward Scissorhands, and later found box office success in roles such as Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and his role as the quirky Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

He has collaborated with director and close friend Tim Burton in seven films, the most recent of which include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and the upcoming Alice in Wonderland. Depp has garnered acclaim for his portrayals of real life figures such as Edward D. Wood, Jr., in Ed Wood, Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie Brasco and George Jung in Blow (2001). More recently, he portrayed legendary bank robber John Dillinger in Michael Mann's 2009 film Public Enemies. ... Read more

This is the kind of biography you get when a film critic writes it. The amount of Johnny Depp information could fill one chapter with the rest of the book being one loooong review of his movies and movies that affected him. If you are a fan of the movie genre, this book might fit BUT if you are a fan of Johnny Depp; - stay clear!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Johnny Depp Book!
I really enjoyed this book. It is informative without being boring! Johnny is fantastic and great reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be Fooled-------
What a waste of my money! As others have stated, the somewhat detailed "history" of Johnny's family is interesting. However, once the reader gets to his films, it's basically a criticism of Johnny and every film he has done. This is just another author making money from Johnny Depp's name under the guise of being an expert on the actor. A much better read is Johnny Depp by Christopher Heard. This is an author who actually "gets" Johnny Depp and provides more details about his life/movies that are accurate and not opinionated like Meikle.

3-0 out of 5 stars He is Gorgeous
Okay, so the book isn't that well written. It's pretty bland and is organized a bit confusingly.
But, then again, there are gorgeous pictures of a gorgeous man, and we get to learn about his life, so do we really care about the literary content?
Nope.

If you love Johnny Depp and just want to learn some more facts about him (and look at lots of good pictures of him!), you'll enjoy this. But if you're looking for a biography that's a good read, this isn't it. Go read...something else that isn't this.;-)

Tracing his career from his debut in Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 through to his flamboyant turn as the voice of Victor Van Dort in Corpse Bride and the spectacular success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, this biography shows how Depp has successfully carved a niche for himself as a serious, somewhat dark, idiosyncratic performer, consistently selecting roles that surprised critics and audiences alike. Other aspects of the charismatic actor's life charted include include failed engagements to Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder, and Kate Moss; his current relationship with French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children; and his early wild parallel career as a rock musician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going to make a great Christmas gift
I received the book I purchased quickly and in great condition. I'm currently pre-reading it before I give it as a gift to my almost 13 year old niece who LOVES Johnny Depp.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL
THIS IS A VERY INFORMATIVE & INTERESTING BOOK ABOUT JOHNNY DEPP. CONTAINS LOTS OF THINGS I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT HIM. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANY JOHNNY DEPP FAN. A MUST READ.

1-0 out of 5 stars Depp Deserves Much Better!
I haven't seen every Johnny Depp movie ever made but I've seen enough to recognize a great talent at work. Depp is certainly a fascinating enough individual and talented enough actor to rate a well-researched, insightful, in-depth biography. Unfortunately it ain't this book!

Author Nigel Goodall subtitled his book an "intimate biography." Wishful thinking, Nigel! Although there's some biographical info, SECRET WORLD OF JOHNNY DEPP's main focus is actually JD's film work. Basically the book is a cobbled-together collection of previously published quotes, interviews and movie reviews from 40+ magazines, newspapers, etc. It wasn't written so much as assembled. The personal details Goodall provides are pretty much common knowledge; the insights already found in "People," "Rolling Stone," et al. Strictly cut-and-paste.

Bottom line: Unless you have to have EVERY book on Johnny Depp, skip this one and save $12.95.

******
Note to Mr. Goodall: "Cunningness" (p.293) is not a word.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Secret World of Johnny Depp
Nice collection of photos and insight to Johnny's childhood and early years but I prefer Christopher Heard's book Johnny Depp Photo Album.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unexpected goldmine
I knew very little about Johnny Depp before reading this book, but thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. There are photos galore and an amazing amount of information for a man so young. I immediately began renting discs of his movies to see that versatility the book keeps talking about. Sure 'nuff! It's there. Depp is an amazing actor. After watching his movie "Chocolat", though, I realize he's an even better musician. Now I understand why music is one of his great loves. Bravo, author Wallace!

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp Bio

Product Description
Known for his quirky, edgy roles and smoldering good looks, Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood's most obsessively followed superstars. Although Depp has been making movies for over 20 years, he's clearly still in the prime of his career: his recent roles, in The Man Who Cried, Blow, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory show an actor at the top of his game, oozing the sex appeal and intense sensitivity with which he first mesmerized audiences in earlier oddball classics such as Cry Baby, Edward Scissorhands, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Currently ensconced in a quiet quarter of France with partner Vanessa Paradis, Depp's sturdy persona is penetrated in Johnny Depp. Updated to include the films Depp has made since the last edition, plus future projects and his several short-lived marriages and assorted romances, this book provides a thorough look at one of Tinseltown's least-understood actors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revised and updated
Perfectly timed for the latest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' blockbuster film is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel: a biography of the quirky actor whose good looks and lively adventures hide a rebellious young man whose drug-filled adolescence seemed unlikely to create a celebrity. From his volatile relationships and life to his evolving career and interest in independent, adventure-laden roles, is Johnny Depp: A Modern Rebel is revised and updated and comes packed with black and white and color photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars good enough
I'd give 4 stars to that book just because I wanted to know more about Depp's childhood n stuff, but this book tells mainly about the movies Johnny has chosen. Still, it was an interesting read ! I think I would recommend.

This book's format of Johnny Depp's life, movies and unique story is wonderful.I couldn't put it down. Each chapter is a movie title, showing how each part of his life changed during that movie experience.I didn't want to give it 5 stars, it deserves 10 stars!!!!

This book gives one a succinct biography and then relates ten different essays on ten of Depp's most interesting roles and films. This is great source material if one is doing a Depp retrospective, as the background info and analyses of the films is for the most part - quite well done.
