Product Description
In the mid1700s, the tip of present-day Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle at the Forks of the Ohio was a valuable piece of land to both the British and French colonial powers vying for control of North America. This guidebook traces the story of the construction of Fort Duquesne by the French, the failed attempt of Gen. Edward Braddock and his British forces to capture the fort in 1754, its eventual capture in 1758 by British general John Forbes's troops, its transformation into Fort Pitt, and the siege on the fort by Indian forces during Pontiac's War in 1763. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Actually the book is correct
This is a great book for anyone interested in this period and region and the book is accurate. As for the regiment strength under General Braddock see Paul Kopperman's "Braddock at the Monongahela" p. 14, it notes that troops were rectruited in America to enhance the regiment's strength. As for the account of Grant's Defeat, everybody knows there are often many accounts of historical events that have conflicting information.Dixon chose information that appears in most accounts of the battle (and Grant's account as well), not just a single individual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Below Average
I did not like this book because it is obvious that the author did not do any research in certain parts but simply repeated the misinformation that other authors have used before him.For example,he states that Braddock arrived with two regiments that were at full strength when they were not. They actually had to recruit colonials, one of whom was Thomas Fausett. He only briefly mentions the Battle of Grant's Hill, which was a significant battle that was fought on the museum's property, and most of his information concerning this battle is incorrect.Dixon states that several buildings that served as sentinel posts were burned in a nightime raid. When in reality,a first person account by one Lt.Alexander Robertson of the 77th states that only one building was burned, and that was used for storage.Somehow the flames were soon extinguished however.Burning the sentinel posts with the sentinels still inside would tend to make them quite irate one would think, andthus ruin the element of suprise. There are no accounts of guardhouses being burned anywhere.I gave the same criticism to the author of the Osprey French & Indian War book(Daniel Marston) for exactly the same reason(Check it out in my other reviews). These brave soldiers who have fallen at Braddock's & Grant's defeats have no Arlington National Cemetery nor memorials to honor them. They lie in unmarked graves that are known only to God.We can at least honor them by telling their story correctly. At the end of the day,the author can always say "Heh,I just made a fast buck off of the War For Empire 250th." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Em's Review
I found the Hobbit to be a very well written book. It was about a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. I enjoyed the character of Bilbo very much, and I enjoyed hearing about his life inside his hobbit hole. JRR Tolkien did a very nice job of describing Bilbo, and I could see a clear picture in my mind of him. JRR Tolkien is also a very clever author. He has clever solutions to traps. For example, during Bilbo's adventure, he and the dwarves were captured in a dungeon. Believe it or not, they escaped by way of barrels in a roaring river. In the sequel, The Lord of the Rings, i did not feel the solutions were as clever. Back to The Hobbit. There were many creatures in this book, and i thought the author did a wonderful job creating them. They were each unique and had their own personalities, and they interacted that supported the ending of the story. There were also a few things i did not enjoy about this book. For example, sometimes Bilbo's split personality got confusing. It was hard to keep track of his character. Also, the book tends to get boring at times. It may depend of what genre of books you enjoy reading, but these books are not my type. However, if you enjoy a good adventure, this book is DEFINETALY for you. Some of you may read this book and not be into adventure stories, but change your mind because of his writing style. Overall I would give this book four out of five stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review by Norman Weinstein in ArchNewsNow Sept 2009
Book Review: "Urban Design for an Urban Century: Placemaking for
People," by Lance Jay Brown, David Dixon, and Oliver Gillham

To the credit of the erudite authors, their sketch of urban design
brings levels of political, sociological, and architectural analysis
together in a readable synthesis.

By *Norman Weinstein*
September 17, 2009

Urban Design is an extraordinarily complex subject to write about. Iím
looking at my opening sentence, wondering if such a truism need be
stated in order to fairly assess the value of this worthy and
infuriating book. Iíll stick with that assertion because /Urban Design
for an Urban Century: Placemaking for People offers a very thoughtful and worthwhile and
/simplified/ overview of the (overwhelmingly Euro-American) history of
the key paradigms, principles, and process of urban design. It breezes
by a reader in the first 100 pages. Think of a 21st-century animated
film equivalent (in Blade Runner tempo, hyper-cyber-presto) of
Lewis Mumford's The City in History: Its Origins, Its
Transformations, and Its Prospects. If you want an overwhelmingly complex
history of urban design, don't look here.

On the plus side, I can't think of a more critically valuable (albeit
simplified) overview of city forms in this compressed treatment. To the
credit of the erudite authors, their sketch of urban design brings
levels of political, sociological, and architectural analysis together
in a readable synthesis. Their apparent biases "pro-New Urbanism,
anti-iconic Postmodernism" never interfere with their acute awareness
of key themes (like how to build cohesive sustainable communities by
recognizing the need for multi-disciplinary experts to listen carefully
to stakeholders). The first 100 pages could make a terrific introductory
reading for an urban design course.

But one caveat needs to be mentioned. "Placemaking for People", the
book's catchy subtitle, is defined as an optimal fit of people and
place. "Optimal" is defined by the authors as energy-efficient public
transportation, serviceable and responsive to the economic and social
needs of an increasingly diverse society. All commendable objectives.
But remarkably little concrete information is given in the book's
supersonic overview of urban design explaining "in-depth" why so many
U.S. urban design programs have failed in the past century. This is
definitely an upbeat reading experience (bless the authors for that)
but I would have enjoyed a far more comprehensive overview of the
history of urban design that would have given food for thought about how
and why the best laid plans for people/place fell by the wayside. What
were the various interpretations of lessons learned from urban designs
gone wrong so that the same design errors aren't repeated in the future?

The book's second half consists of 70 case studies of projects that have
won the American Institute of Architect's Honor Awards for Urban Design.
The authors frame the studies effectively with their concise summaries
of what key urban design principles and paradigms came into play with
each project, a useful counterpoint to the sometimes pretentious and
often vague AIA Jury comments.

Bottom line: read the book's first half as a stimulating discussion of
the history of city design. Pick and choose the case studies in the
text's second half that seem useful. For now, the best text on urban
design may come into being from your walking the long way home.

[...]

5-0 out of 5 stars a great introduction to urban design
The book is an excellent introduction to the field of Urban Design, with a
comprehensive, yet synthetic, historical overview, a focused presentation of
the basic principles of the discipline, and an in-depth analysis and
critical evaluation of some of the most interesting contemporary urban
projects. The book will be highly beneficial not only to practitioners,
public officials, policy makers and community organizations, but also to
college students. The introductory nature of the text and the chapters¹
agile and articulated format, where the main text and images are
complemented by informative
in-depth discussions of case-studies, makes the book particularly suited for
architecture and planning students having a first exposure to Urban Design.
Preparing future architects and planners with an understanding of the art
and the challenges of Urban Design does not only help college programs meet
accreditation requirements, but it also allows them to strive for a richer,
more solid and more socially responsible education of their students.I
strongly recommend the book for any college level introductory course on
Urban Design.

Social Media Marketing Top Seven
Amazon-exclusive content from author David Meerman Scott

Establishing a social media marketing strategy and creating effective Web content that is indexed by search engines is critical for any business. When people are looking for answers to problems, they go online first!

People and organizations that participate in social media (creating YouTube videos, participating on sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, starting a blog and the like) become part of a vibrant online community and show that market that they are worthy of doing business with.

Unlike non-targeted, in-your-face, interruption-based advertising, social media is content that people actually want to see. How cool is that? Rather than forcing you to convince people to pay attention to your products and services by dreaming up messages and ad campaigns, search engines deliver interested buyers right to your company’s virtual doorstep. This is a marketer’s dream-come-true.

However, most marketers don’t know how to harness this exciting form of marketing. Their most common mistake is to spend way too much time talking about your company’s products and services and worrying too much about being “on message.” In addition, many companies are fearful of jumping into the social media waters because it seems scary to put yourself out there.

Top Seven Ways to Get the Most Out of Social Networking Sites:
1. Target a specific audience. Create a page that reaches an audience that is important to your organization. It is usually better to reach a small niche market than try to go large.

2. Be a thought leader. Provide valuable and interesting information that people want to check out. It is better to show your expertise in a market or at solving a buyer’s problems than to blather on about your product.

3. Create lots of links. Link to your own sites and blog, and those of others in your industry and network. Everybody loves links—it makes the Web what it is. You should certainly link to your own stuff from a social networking site (like your blog), but also link to other people’s sites and content in your own market.

4. Encourage people to contact you. Make it easy for people to reach you online, and be sure to follow up personally on your fan mail.

5. Participate. Create groups and participate in online discussions. Become an online leader and organizer.

6. Make it easy to find you. Tag your page and add your page into the subject directories. Encourage others to bookmark your page with del.icio.us and DIGG.

7. Experiment. These sites are great because you can try new things. If it isn’t working, tweak it. Or abandon the effort and try something new. There is no such thing as an expert in social networking—we’re all learning as we go!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, once you get past the style
This is an extremely thorough and helpful guide for the first-time visitor to Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales). It's well organized, beautifully illustrated, completely researched, and extensive, and it's crammed with commentary and suggestions by locals in the different areas as to the best places to go and when and how to go there. I lived in England for some years, and this book is full of things I missed. I wonder if I could squeeze in another trip before I'm too old?

My only quibble, and it's a minor one, is that the editors are trying so hard to be young and hip that the copy sometimes comes across as rather frantic. (You really don't need to apologize for the country being historical, you know; that's half the reason we go.) The tone made me fear on first reading that it was going to be all night clubs and theme parks and brushing aside parks and museums impatiently, but it's not. Get past the silly self-conscious tone, and this book is stuffed with useful and tantalizing information. Now when does the next flight to Heathrow leave?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not complete
This book is good but it does not cover all. It does not have any information or reference to The British Heritage Pass.

British Heritage Pass is an all-in-one ticket for international travelers to enter more than 500 properties in Great Britain, including Stonehenge and Edinburg Castle. I saved a lot of money and time (no need to stand in line at the ticket counter) using this ticket.

Conclusion
==========
Do not depend on one book only. Diligently search online information and blogs before you finalize your itinerary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty robust travel guide.
So, as the book's cover states, it is in full color. In fact it's chock full of images of Britain, foods, people, events, activities, etc.

Like many other books in the series it starts with a Top 25 Experiences section. The book then goes on to break down the country by region: London, Southern England, Central England, Northern England, Wales, Edinburgh & Glasgow, Scotland's Highlands & Islands. Each region seems to be broken down into cities of interest, with lodging, dining and entertainment information and often pricing for each.

Toward the back of the book is a section Great Britain in Focus that gives brief summary of some history, culture, food and drink, safety tips, etc. It's rather interesting.

In all, it seems like a pretty solid book. I'd tend to give it a thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to go now! But wonderful just for reading & info
I love, Love, LOVE this book! If there is such a thing as a perfect guide book, to me, this is it.

First, it is absolutely gorgeous! The pictures bright & clear and really show Great Britain to best advantage. Really nice maps of the countries and of a number of cities. The text is SO well-written: informative, interesting, and full of love for Britain. That love of the history, land, people, etc., shines from every page.

Each section has several pages of "Highlights" that give a terrific idea of what that region has to offer. Each section also has a "Don't Miss" list written by someone who should know. For example, the Stratford-on-Avon list is written by an actor from the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Tower of London list is written by the Chief Yeoman Warder/Beefeater. Very cool.

There are also sample itineraries of various lengths and suggested options (such as Avebury rather than the smaller, more popular Stonehenge). Also included: best times to visit, how long a stop is likely to take, and features on many of the most popular & recommended sites--and Britain certainly has plenty! Don't forget the necessities, such as places to dine and stay and how to get from one place to another.

For me, the weakest part of the book is the dining and lodging. It seems extremely limited and a bit pricey. SO if that's important to you, get another guide that excels there in addition to this one. However, the rest of the book is so wonderful that I'm not docking anything for that.

There is also a relatively large though succinct section on British history, as well as ideas on family travel, food & drink, music, sports, and a directory on everything from business hours to gay/lesbian traveler notes. Note: Ireland is not covered.

The best part? Anyone who loves Great Britain (including writers and teachers) will thoroughly enjoy this terrific guidebook and find not only beautiful pictures, but plenty of interesting information. Even if you have no plans to travel there, this is one guide book that is dynamite reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting Around Great Britain
This terrific little guide to Great Britain is an all-color book full of maps, photos, and more information than I can shake a dozen sticks at. Easy to use, well-ordered and intuitive, the book is divided into regions and larger cities, including those in Scotland and Wales. Trip suggestions are included for each area, and they include plenty of variations to help you see the sights you're most interested in in the time you have allotted.

Basic information for each area includes currency exchange, telephone codes, and emergency data, as well as interest-piquing articles and background information. There are itineraries, booking info for just about anything you might be looking for, lists of must-sees, and 'discoveries' - interesting places not so well known. The discoveries are stand-out.

You'll get plenty of quick, interesting history and trivia lessons for each area, as well as insights into modern culture, society, and psychology. There's a little bit of everything here. It's stuffed with essentials and lots more.

If you're an Anglophile, the book may be too simple for you, but I think it's absolutely outstanding for most of us. For me, at least.I hope to visit Great Britain eventually, and when I do, this book will go with me. For now, it's a research tool allowing me to set a few scenes of a novel there and hopefully sound like I've seen it first hand. This is the kind of guide that makes an an excellent research resource for writers. I'm loving it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Casual walkers should skip this one
The unilaterally good reviews for this book are what led me to purchase it in advance of my recent trip to the UK. However, I was disappointed to find that there was virtually no info that would be useful to a casual walker/hiker such as myself. The 'short walks' listed are 6-8 hours long, while the 'long walks' are multi-day adventures. There are virtually no routes given for the majority of walkers who are looking for more manageable 1-3 hour afternoon walks. We found the TI maps in each town to be far more helpful, and there are also books out there with a wider variety of walking choices. I ended up ditching this book in a B&B at the end of my stay - hopefully a more hardcore walker will stumble across it and find it useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Of A Fantasy Guide
Gives good information on walking trails across Britain, some ancient, many modern, the most beckoning perhaps being the recently converted tow paths along nineteenth-century canals. Although for most visitors to Britain doing a walking tour for a vacation is probably more of a fantasy option to be pondered rather than undertaken, this guidebook is still a cool read and it is comprehensive and informative as far as its subject matter goes.

Picture this. I have spent money and time in finding the right routes. Ihave just come in from a day walking in Snowdonia and I'm sitting down toeat in a YHA. The man next to me is from Romania. He has just arrived andis equipped with one book which he lets me read. In this book I find all ofthe best bits of my favourite walks. There is something for everybody andit is very informative. I would have saved loads of money and wasted hourson trips that were not really what I wanted - IF I HAD READ THIS BOOK. He was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played college football at South Florida. Mitchell struggled in season-opening losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. His play rapidly improved thereafter, and he made game-changing plays in critical wins over the Washington Redskins in week 3 and the Buffa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3236974 ... Read more
