5-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, A Past Master of Figurative Art
Cornelius McCarthy recently died and the art world is the sadder for it.Known primarily in Great Britain for his excellent paintings of the male figure, his works are quite unlike the many other artists who emphasize art of the male form.McCarthy's style of painting is difficult to categorize: he vacillated between near cubist approach to soft, almost two-dimensional handling of the paint strokes. He painted both individual portrait-like image as well as groups of men, clothed and unclothed. His paintings are sensual yet not erotic as though his drive was to maintain a dignity in the genre of male figurative painting.

Since his death his paintings have grown in interest by the art world and certainly by art collectors. With his entire output now available to assess, there are recurring themes apparent that did not seem so pungent as he produced individual exhibitions: we can now see that many of his works included somewhat brittle statements of addressing themanner in which the stigma of admiration of the male nude by 'corporate types' carried a message beyond the canvas. While McCarthy's paintings are for the most part tender and sensitive interactions between men, he was unafraid to make some important 'political' statements. And his importance as a 20th century painter is heightened by this discovery.

It is hoped that someone willwrite the Catalogue raissoné of this important artist's contribution to art, but until that time comes, this book published by Adonis Gallery is a very selection of the master's work.Grady Harp, January 10 ... Read more

Product Description
This month, all of Harvard Business Review's Forethought contributions address avian influenza, its potential to become a pandemic, and the red flags this possibility raises for businesses. Jeffrey Staples warns that the H5N1 strain of the avian flu represents a new class of global threat and urges companies to plan accordingly. Scott F. Dowell and Joseph S. Bresee show how mutations of the virus could boost its ability to spread from person to person. If a human pandemic does strike, Nitin Nohria explains, the most adaptive organizations have the best chance of surviving. Warren G. Bennis says that such times call for a leader who can articulate the common threat and inspire people to overcome it together. Baruch Fischhoff, too, emphasizes the importance of risk communication, warning that managers who dismiss it may endanger the people they're responsible for and force stakeholders to look elsewhere for information. Fischhoff also demonstrates, in another article, how managers can map out their companies' vulnerabilities. Larry Brilliant tells us what people worldwide can expect from their governments. Peter Susser views the threat of a pandemic from a legal perspective, examining several HR-related issues businesses could face. Sherry Cooper points out the social and economic lessons we should have learned from Toronto's 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. William MacGowan explains how Sun Microsystems is building a continuity plan to keep its global workforce healthy in the event of a pandemic. Wendy Dobson and Brian R. Golden caution that if a pandemic begins in China, as many scientists expect, the global impact will be immediate because China is so integral to the world economy. HBR also provides pandemic planning guidelines adapted from a checklist compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as a list of recommended avian flu resources. ... From the author: Over the past two centuries, surveillance technology has advanced in three major spurts. In the first instance the surveillance instrument was a specially designed building, Bentham's Panopticon; in the second, a tightly controlled television network, Orwell's Big Brother; today, an electronic human-tracking service. Functionally, each technology provided total surveillance within the confines of its designated geographical coverage, but costs, geographical coverage, and benefits have changed dramatically through time. In less than a decade, costs have plummeted from hundreds of thousands of dollars per watched person per year for analog surveillance or tens of thousands of dollars for incarceration to mere hundreds of dollars for electronic human-tracking systems. Simultaneously, benefits to those being watched have increased enormously, so that individual and public resistence are minimized. The end result is a fertile new field of investigation for surveillance studies involving an endless variety of power relationships. Our literal, empirical approach to panopticism has yielded insights that might have been less obvious under the metaphorical approach that has dominated recent scholarly discourse. We conclude that both approaches--literal and metaphorical--are essential to understand what promises to be the greatest instrument of social change arising from the Information Revolution. We urge public and scholarly debate--local, national, and global--on this grand social experiment that has already begun without forethought. Keywords: geofencing, geoslavery, GIS, GPS, human tracking, Panopticon.
