Historical Fiction for Modern Readers
In his historical fiction novel, Cornelius the Orphan, author Douglas Quinn takes readers along for the life journey of Cornelius Cursonwhit, an actual person who lived in the 1600s.Of course, Quinn's account (admittedly) is a work of fiction based on a handful of historical records that he has had opportunity to research.By doing a brief search online out of curiosity, I was able to find a few results that shared some details about Cornelius.

When we meet Cornelius as the story begins, he is a young Dutch man, apprenticed to a glazier (glass craftsman) named Herr Vroom.Frau Vroom is none too kind to him, and when he hears there is an inheritance for him, Cornelius is quick to take to sea to seek his fortune!Things don't turn out quite as the young man planned, however.In fact, his life seems a tumultuous dance with fate.Often, however, his hard knocks come as a result of his own pride and desire for immediate gratification.

While Cornelius himself is certainly not a hero, or in my opinion even a likeable person as portrayed here, the author's writing skill held my attention from the first page onward.As I read, I hoped to see Cornelius improve himself, to grow up to be a decent man . . . .Only by reading the book will you find out if he succeeded!I think it says a lot about a writer when he can tell the story of a person you may not really enjoy rooting for, yet can create a page-turner that has you eager to see what happens next!

Quinn is the author of several other books.Look for the sequel to this novel, entitled Samuel:The Pioneer, coming soon.

Adventuresome Tale
Cornelius the Orphan by Douglas Quinn, is an adventuresome tale about a boy named Cornelius Corsunwhit who is orphaned early in life and struggles through many precarious situations to make his way in the world. Set in the 17th century, Cornelius' story begins in New Amsterdam, moves through the Holland seaside and country, and ends back in colonial United States. This story has high-seas adventure, famous historical characters, lust, betrayal, friendship and loss.

Cornelius starts as a glazier's apprentice in New Amsterdam, where just being him gets him into trouble. Unwanted, Cornelius gets notice of an inheritance in Rotterdam, Holland and sets off to find his wealth. Instead of making a life using the skills he learned as an apprentice, Cornelius always seems to try the easy way out. Thus he finds plenty of people who use him, and many situations in which he must find escape.

Cornelius believes that he is above many of the people he meets, even though he is of poor education and has no qualms about stealing from most people. He rarely feels that his misfortunes are of his own causing, and seems to have entitlement issues. One of his only redeeming qualities is his perseverance.

The pace of the storytelling in this selection was good. I really liked that the story moved from different venues and hosted a wide variety of characters for Cornelius to interact with. I also liked how the book put Cornelius into historically significant times and places.

My biggest problem with this story was that Cornelius didn't really learn any lessons to help him do right in his future. He continued to make selfish and arrogant choices at the cost of many of his loved ones. Not to mention, the guy just never caught a break! As much as I disliked Cornelius as a character, I still hoped he would find true happiness at some juncture in his life. Didn't happen...

On a scale of 1-4, I give this book a 3. The writing was done well, the story was diverse and interesting, but damn that Cornelius! Always ruining everything! Perhaps in the next book, his son will learn from his mistakes.

An Adventurous Life
Much in life is about choices and it is the choices the character makes which drive the plot of this picaresque novel.

Like Dickens' Oliver Twist, Cornelius is an orphan and the author exposes the cruel treatment which was often the lot of such children in earlier times. But in this portrayal of their mutual plight the similarity between Oliver and Cornelius ends. Despite his many trials and temptations, Dickens' creation remained innocent and eventually was rewarded in fairy-tale fashion.

The life of Cornelius is painted in a grimmer, more realistic manner which, though not always pleasant, is always interesting and keeps the reader turning pages to see what will happen next.

And a lot does happen. Beginning in 17th century New Amsterdam, where the young Cornelius is deceived and shipped off to Rotterdam, then on to the Caribbean, Boston and, finally, the wilds of New Hampshire, the orphan has all sorts of adventures, mingling with the low and the high, including such actual persons as the artists Rembrandt and Vermeer, the scientist and lens-maker van Leeuwenhoek and the pirate Mary Read.

Cornelius is not always likable, often putting his own needs above even of those who have been kind to him. But he has a robust self-reliance and a sense of justice which are admirable, qualities which, time and again, land him in trouble when he comes to the defense of oppressed individuals.

Cornelius is based on a real person, though Quinn has used the broad brush of fiction to depict his history. If this novel whets your taste for more (as it has mine), there is a sequel in the offing involving the orphan's son, Samuel.

A walk through time
Cornelius the Orphan takes the reader on a journey through the past. If you are at all interested in history, which I am, you will find yourself enjoying this book for that alone. I did, however find myself questioning several references to determine their validity. The story itself follows the life of Cornelius who finds himself alone in the world at a very young age and learns to deal with his situation. I found myself comparing him to Oliver from Oliver Twist.

As Cornelius travels through life his station changes. He experiences great wealth and respect -- only to be turned against and land himself in jail. He is betrayed, lied to, beaten, berated and somehow or another manages to make his way to his late sixties -- all of which is hard to believe considering the time frame. However, the book is fiction.

I found the story amusing, but a bit draggy at times.

Cornelius:The Orphan is a story by Douglas Quinn that is based on Cornelius' life in the 1600's.Cornelius is a poor young man and has to find his own way in the world, sometimes resulting in thievery.As Cornelius embarks on his life's journey he is confronted with one adventure after another.He meets a wide array of characters consisting of pirates, artists, tavern owners, gamblers....some became lovers, some friends, and some foes.

During his attempts to be successful in life, Cornelius encounters several obstacles he must overcome.Like real life, some of his choices are good...some not so good.He has many mishaps which are often times the results of the bad choices he makes.

Cornelius was very resourceful and the author did a good job of making this a very believable story.I could relate to the various emotions exhibited by Cornelius and imagined his interaction with those people who were in his life.

My opinion:
When I volunteered to read and review this book, I wasn't sure if it was going to be interesting or not.I had never read any of Quinn's books and this was a first for me.However, I like history and when I received the book and immediately started reading it.I was hooked from page one and with each line I was drawn into Cornelius' exciting world.

During the story, there were times I disliked Cornelius and other times I loved him.Regardless, I found this book to be very interesting and it was a fun read.I will be looking forward to reading the next story in this series, Samuel ~ The Pioneer. ... Read more

The following quotation should be enough to prevent potential readers from wasting their time with this book: "It is important at the beginning [of calculus] that students not think of dy/dx as a ratio.
