Product Description
Pharmakeia (far-mak-i-ah) Greek: the power of witchcraft/sorcery manifested in drug addiction. Throughout history drugs were used with the specific intent of accessing the spirit realm. Today, unknown to most, dark spirits continue to patrol the perimeter seeking an entrance to the souls of all who partake of Pharmakeia. College Freshman Joshua Mitchell s discovery of a shocking family secret creates a tremendous burden. Its weight proves too much for him to bear and the results are absolutely tragic. Meanwhile, his childhood friend, Ashley Wells has begun to feel she is losing a battle of her own, unable to let go of the pain of that fateful night. Both choose to fight past and present demons of addiction by dedicating their seemingly broken lives to helping others. Behind it all, in the realm of the unseen, the Ruler of Darkness meets with demonic lords to discuss a threat to one of their greatest weapons. Even as Pharmakeia reigns on many nations, there is an attempt to expose our campaign. We must offer our temptations with the greatest cunning. And remember... the best lie is one told softly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
This is easily the worst celebrity biography I have ever read. How this volume got published is beyond me.Not only is the author's narrative completely erroneous on major points, but it seems to me that someone, somewhere along the publishing line would have caught the errors.Didn't anyone edit this manuscript?
And if so, didn't that editor know anything about the subject (Kirk Douglas)?

I could on and on about the glaring errors you'll find here, but in the interest of space, let me focus on one.Munn writes at length about the story and filming of "Gunfight at the OK Corral," one of the numerous Kirk Douglas-Burt Lancaster collaborations. But throughout it all he is commenting on Kirk's role as Wyatt Earp and Burt's role as Doc Holliday.Even a person who slept through ninety percent of this fine Western film knows that Kirk played Holliday and Burt played Earp.I don't think this author even saw the film!

In short, a terrible, terrible book! ... Read more

Product Description
This volume is the proceedings of the 2002 Clay Mathematics Institute School on Geometry and String Theory. This month-long program was held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, England, and was organized by both mathematicians and physicists: A. Corti, R. Dijkgraaf, M. Douglas, J. Gauntlett, M. Gross, C. Hull, A. Jaffe and M. Reid. The early part of the school had many lectures that introduced various concepts of algebraic geometry and string theory with a focus on improving communication between these two fields. During the latter part of the program there were also a number of research level talks.

This volume contains a selection of expository and research articles by lecturers at the school and highlights some of the current interests of researchers working at the interface between string theory and algebraic geometry. The topics covered include manifolds of special holonomy, supergravity, supersymmetry, D-branes, the McKay correspondence and the Fourier-Mukai transform.

The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in relations between mathematical physics and algebraic geometry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
Easy to use, very practical stuff. Gets right to the heart of the matter. I am a professional and use the Code Check books often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick refernce guide.
Great to have on hand when you need to reference certain building codes and don't want to search through the actual code book. Great for field use. Durable and tough. Well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems like a better idea than it was
For my purposes, this book wasn't as handy of a reference as I thought it would be.It has lots of pictures and is flashy, but I ended up using books about framing and foundations to really get enough information to be useful in building a shed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
Excellent knowledge base for the DIY and pro. This series of books will show you everything you need to know to do it right the first time and pass those crucial inspections.

5-0 out of 5 stars valuable quick reference
Although the graphics seem simplistic at first glance, they make the information easy to grasp. I had several "ah-ha, I get it" moments when browsing for information. I actually enjoyed looking at this code reference. That's a first! ... Read more

Product Description
"I read In The Wings with great fascination. I learned things about myself that I never knew and things about Michael that he never told me. It's an intriguing, well-written book. She will be hearing from my lawyers soon." -Kirk Douglas

"Diana Douglas's In The Wings is the most staggeringly beautiful biography I have ever read. It is overwhelmingly honest, heartbreaking. I laughed, I wept-it is simply extraordinary."-Patricia Neal

If opposites attract, there were few attractions stronger than the one between Diana Dill and Kirk Douglas. Both were students at New York's Academy of the Dramatic Arts, and an affinity quickly developed. Their marriage was a storybook union-but after Kirk's emergence as a major star with the film version of Champion, their lives went in different directions, leading to their separation and eventual divorce.

Sometime later, while continuing her acting career, Diana met the great love of her life.Actor, producer, and successful novelist Bill Darrid was exactly the right man for her after the mercurial Douglas. The two remained happily married for some thirty-seven years until his death in 1992.

In The Wings is Diana's answer to her son Michael's request for her personal memoir for his son Cameron. It recounts her long and lively life, with all the blemishes included. Now, having finished a new film and entering a new marriage at a time of life when she expected to be comfortably retired, Diana offers her personal philosophy to her grandson: "Be courageous, be compassionate, and, for God's sake, have fun!" ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better
I liked this book, but I wasn't compelled by it.DDD's claim to fame is that she was married to Kirk Douglas for 6 years and with him bore Michael Douglas. The rest of her story has mostly to do with her long acting career and her happy second marriage to Bill Darrid that lasted until his death after 37 years together. While she had a prolific stint as a thesbian, it was not marked by big hits or famous costars so her "war stories" are a bit on the tame side.Apparently Kirk (whom she called Doug) was a womanizer who had mood swings--not the easiest man to be married to.And her other son Joel was the problem child compared to Michael, with three wives and a drinking problem.Diana comes across as stable and decent, though not sensational. But she married a third husband when approaching 80, so give the girl some credit!(That wasn't in her book--I found it through Google.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting to Know You
Reading "In the Wings" is an exciting discovery. This is not your run-of-the-mill Hollywood celebrity puff piece, although the cares and joys of the celebrity life are all there. Rather, Bermuda-born Diana Douglas Darrid chronicles the life of a working actress who was married to a superstar, Kirk Douglas, and give birth to another, Michael Douglas. After her divorce from Kirk, she was a single mother of two boys, Michael and Joel, whom she raised alone for some years while continuing her career in film, theater and television. This is a real page-turner, an honest and candid look into the life of a marvelous woman, the kind of person you would wish to have as a friend. ... Read more

"The death penalty is one of the most contentious issues of our time and has generated an astonishing amount of arguments both for and against capital punishment. Out of this debate, Martinez, Richardson, and Hornsby have crafted the broadest and most balanced account to date. The Leviathan's Choice: Capital Punishment in the Twenty-First Century explores the death penalty from four distinct perspectives--philosophical, theological, social science, and legal--and includes scholarly essays on both sides of the debate. Product Description
Complex collaboration refers to situations where working together effectively across boundaries is critical for complex projects and problems. Complex collaboration refers to knowledge-intensive business processes that require highly interactive communication, coordination, negotiation, research and/or development. This work often involves projects of large scope and long duration.

Such projects may cross disciplinary, organizational, national, and/or cultural boundaries. The challenges of managing such situations include ambitious schedules, conflict of cultures and practices, massive amounts of information, multiple languages, and ambiguity of roles and responsibilities. Complex collaboration represents a capability that is essential to effective execution in such situations as new product development, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and supply chain management, as well as large government projects. A number of issues emerge in examining complex collaboration, including: unit of analysis, critical relationships, resource development, virtual teaming, key skills, and improvement processes.

The chapters in this volume address these issues and share examples, including: the Joint Strike Fighter program at Lockheed-Martin, Solectron's integrated supply chain, and IMD's partnership with MIT. Models of collaborative capability and capacity provide the facets of a framework for understanding these complex alliances and partnerships. ... Read more
