Product Description

The author's goal is to increase readers' understanding as well as their knowledge about personal adjustment, in order that they may continue learning on their own. By underscoring several important societal (not just personal) themes, the reader is compelled to focus on other people as much as the self. Content is drawn from the psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic viewpoints and includes contributions from clinical, personality, social, and developmental psychology, as well as from cognitive, biological, and health psychology. Recent coverage of science and social issues such as: terrorism and its effects, the present and future of technology, cultural diversity, environmental psychology, positive psychology, population changes, the status of America's children, changes in the American family, historic changes in social attitudes and community problems, gender similarities and differences, especially as related to education, career choice, etc., healthy aging, self-image, information on job searches, types of sexual orientation, stress with special attention on terror and trauma, stigma as it relates to mental disorders as well as the prevalence of various disorders, and alternative forms of therapy such as art therapy and acupuncture. For those interested in applying psychological insights and principles to their own lives as a way of achieving a better understanding of themselves and of living more effectively.

Grade A transaction no problems with this person ... speedy and accurate from the beginning

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychology for Living
Great psychology book to be a better and more effective individual in society, also for understanding others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read carefully
The material is OK, but there are many editing errors; missing words and typographical errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars True confession
Okay, so I didn't read this book yet, but the last comment posted made me all the more likely to adopt it to use in the classroom.Christianity and humanism are not polar opposites. In fact, our own personal choices are the only things we 1) can adjust to improve our lives (psychologically speaking) and 2) can offer up as a symbol of our religious devotion (religiously speaking). As soon as I get my copy of this book, I'll read it and post another review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psychology for Living
This book does a very good job of remaining humanistic; in that the authors believe that it is within the ability of all human beings to choose to improve themselves, and makes a lot of room for the variability of human preferences and styles. Each chapter contains a self-assessment questionaire that is fun and enlightening, which will give rise to the reader's perspectives and life experience. In contrast to most Adjustment Textbooks, this one is more applicable to real life than most.It minimized psychological theory, and maximized application to your own life! ... Product Description

Not long ago, Karen Duffy was sitting on top of the world and loving it. From calling bingo in a nursing home, she'd taken the express elevator to the penthouse overlooking success street. She worked as a VJ on MTV, as a spokesmodel for Revlon, as a film actress in Dumb and Dumber and other movies, and as a correspondent on Michael Moore's irreverent, Emmy-winning TV Nation. She was selected as one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in the same year she won the Ernest Borgnine Look-alike Contest.

But suddenly Duffy's whirlwind life of celebrity parties and socializing with friends from George Clooney to Jim Carrey to Richard Gere came to an abrupt, grinding halt when she was stricken with a serious illness in one of its rarest forms: sarcoidosis of the central nervous system. The disease left her partially paralyzed, in tremendous pain, and at times near death.

Although she had a serious disease, Duffy soon realized that the only way for her to survive was not to take the disease too seriously. Instead of hiding from life, she chose to run toward it. She learned to embrace the chaos of a life-threatening disease with a wit and humor that helped her to find the love of her life at a time when things seemed darkest.

Model Patient is a gripping, inspiring, and hilarious memoir that recounts the singular triumphs and tragedies of coping with a chronic, life-threatening disease.

Model Patient is an unforgettable, illumnating story that captures Duff's indomitable joie de vivre, revealing how she lives and how she has survived. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well she told you she was a wiseass
I have a chronic illness (17 years now) so I read a lot of books about all kinds of chronic illnesses. This is my 4th "illness memoir," and the first one I've enjoyed.
I noticed most of the scathing reviews here are by people who didn't finish the book.

I'm also a writer, so I understand that when someone writes a memoir they are *expected* to include their life- if not all of it, some portion of it- so we know who we are listening to and why we should care about what they went through, and how it fits in with the rest of their personality/ life story. That's just how memoirs go. If you want something chock full of info on a specific disease, that's a different kind of book.

So. This is a memoir. it's going to have a lot of personal detail. If that is not what you want to hear about, then get a more practical book. She told us up front she didn't want to write a feel-sorry-for-me book, so she tried to keep it light and funny. Occasionally, her humor is a little tasteless (like making fun of other "weird" diseases), but again, she warned us up front she was an incurable wiseass.

I felt Karen gave some good insight into how to keep your spirits up and how to deal with unpleasant necessities of being chronically and seriously ill.

I don't agree with her trashing all alternative medicine as quackery, but then it's a memoir, and because of that we know she is a devout Catholic and therefore doesn't question authority. She tells us all to deal with illness in our own way- in which case she ought to show a little more open mind towards other modes of treatment, especially given that her choices left her with a permanent morphine addiction and the need to get plastic surgery after having her face stretched out by steroids.

books that I think might be more uplifting to someone who is ill are Love Medicine and Miracles (written for cancer patients, but the principles apply to all diseases) Love, Medicine and Miracles: Lessons Learned about Self-Healing from a Surgeon's Experience with Exceptional Patientsand Anatomy of an Illness (Norman Cousins). Anatomy of an Illness as Perceived by the Patient: Reflections on Healing and Regeneration

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your time and money
If you are looking for a shallow book about the life of a model, MTV host and celebrity name dropper, this is the book for you. If you are looking for insight into life with Sarcoidosis, look elsewhere. As a person living with sarcoidosis, i hoped this book would have more insight into actual life with the disease. Instead we are taken into Duffs very self absorbed life, her famous friends, and her vanity driven antics. This book should be retitled "Life as a model, celebrity date, and MTV host. And by the way, a little about my Sarcoidosis".

4-0 out of 5 stars Disease and a positive outlook
Karen Duffy writes about her affliction with a somewhat uncommon disease in a biographical tale that combines a story about her interesting life with a story about her life dealing with the trials and tribulations of sarcoidosis,a chronic inflammatory disease that affects many different parts of the body. Her wonderful sense of humor and upbeat attitude make this book most entertaining as well as inspiring.

1-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't make myself finish it!
Duffy's storytelling is full of name dropping and "my life is so cool" immaturity that I couldn't make myself read more than a couple of chapters, and that was more painful than my sarcoidosis. This book is awful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rachel Ray 30 or DUFF?!No contest!
After spending way too much time contemplating which RR tome to add to my collection I stumbled upon an episode of Party Planning with Dave Tuterra (sp?) and instantly decided to get Karen's new book instead.LOVE IT!

I am about 35 years old and I grew up thinking Karen Duffy was ABSOLUTELY thehottest and coolest VJ/ model on the planet!I wanted to live her life, have her job, and sleep with her boyfriends! If anyone could convince me to "play for the other team" it would have been her.My girlfriends and I even used her moto- "We're getting married in May- may the day never come!"

I actually cried when I heard about her illness which was regarded as terminal at the time.I read Model Patient- her book about her struggle with CNS Sarcoidosis and was amazed that the icon of party, rock and roll and pop culture could be such a strong and resilient person underneath.

Now, like the rest of us she has traded in the club scene and coctails for marriage and motherhood.
Her new book 'Slob in the Kitchen" is not for the refined foodie that wants to spendhours preparing a jaw dropping meal, but for people that need to make dinner.Preferably one that the kids will eat. Highly recommend! ... Read more

Product Description

Community Psychology provides students with an introduction to the concepts, research and applications emerging from the field of community psychology.  Community Psychology focuses on the prevention of problems, the promotion of well-being, empowerment of members within a community, the appreciation of diversity, and an ecological model for the understanding of human behavior.  Attention is paid to both “classic” early writings by the first wave and the most recent journal articles and reviews by today’s practitioners and researchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Community
This volume does an excellent job of striking a balance between the science necessary to be useful and credible and the sense of engagement that is true to the social construct of community.I found it careful, thorough and thoughtful rather than dry. It is a textbook, not a work geared for the general audience so it does require some background and some effort. But it is an excellent and insightful text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Community Psychology (3rd Edition)
An essential read for anyone interested in this immportant aspect of psychological practice

3-0 out of 5 stars Dry and Boring
I ordered this book as the primary textbook for an independent study course in community psychology. While the text is thorough and up-to-date, this is one of the most boring textbooks I have tried to read. This textbook is poorly designed- no pictures, no color, virtually no charts and diagrams to compliment the text.As a student interested in learning community psychology, I found this an extremely difficult text.It put me to sleep every time I tried to read it.If you have a strong attention span, then this book is fine.If you need something more from a textbook than 300 pages of black and white print, then keep looking. ... Product Description
Are you looking for a cookbook that will challenge your kitchen skills and food knowledge, spurring you on to ever greater feats of culinary leger-demain with creations that will leave your guests gasping in astonishment and weeping with gratitude? A Slob in the Kitchen, then, is not the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a cookbook that acknowledges that the best recipes are those that get you in and out of the kitchen unscathed and produce something that tastes exactly like food—you’ve found your new bible.

A Slob in the Kitchen is a book “for the host who isn’t afraid to crack a few eggs, crack a few jokes, throw a few curves, cut a few corners, and have a few laughs,” says self-proclaimed slob Karen Duffy. Her wisenheimer cooking primer provides nearly two hundred simple and completely approachable recipes that are so foolproof even a monkey could make them, yet are good enough to serve anytime, anywhere.

Need some easy eats for a cocktail get-together? Try Buffalo-Style Shrimp or Fiesta Like There Is No Manaña Guacamole. Have hungry kids to appease? Throw them some Peanut Butter and Jelly Sushi or let them burn off some energy with Kick-the-Can Ice Cream. In a retro mood? Check out the selection of Kitsch-en Classics for Spinach Quiche, just like Mom used to serve her bridge club. These recipes may not win you a spot on Iron Chef, but they will put a smile on the face of everyone you serve them to—and isn’t that why you cook in the first place? With Duffy as your guide you’ll be turning out soups, salads, entrées, desserts, and more—all without breaking a sweat or setting foot in a fancy-pants gourmet grocery. You’ll even pick up some cooking shortcuts and fun food trivia that make the whole process of getting food on the table that much more enjoyable.

So if you’re finally ready to put down that takeout menu, toss the frozen entrées, and pick up a wooden spoon, take heart: A Slob in the Kitchen is the culinary Rosetta stone you’ve been waiting for, an empowering and entertaining introduction to the pleasures of presenting homemade fare without the angst. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An every day help!
I'll admit - I'm a good cook.I can grind my own meats, make my own jams and even make my own potsticker wrapers from scratch.

But geez, I don't want to do that EVERYDAY!

This book, while not for professional chefs, gets kudos from me as it addresses a huge fact of life - you need to feed people everyday, sometimes three times day, while doing things other than cooking. You need easy tasty recipes. This book has 'em.

So for the reviewers who are concerned it's not "haute" enough -it's not. That's not it's job. But it will get you through life and kids and husbands and work without resorting to mixes or prefab junk. It's real.Nuff said!

5-0 out of 5 stars You need to own this book
Duff rocks as usual! This is such a great book.Again, Duff uses her hysterical sense of humor, but this time in a cookbook....a perfect gift for anyone!...love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hungry, need a laugh?BUY THIS BOOK!
Wit, wisdom, and great looks - Ms. Duffy has it all.Her latest book will make you laugh AND make your place smell great.Stop reading and buy this damn book!

5-0 out of 5 stars duck soup is good food
she's funny.no, really.and the recipes are easy to make and delicious.I'm eating the guacamole as we speak. The only thing I really like to make is a phone call for restaurant reservations or delivery service.the tone makes it less intimidating to try the dishes, and the book is fun to read.i have about eleven high end cookbooks in my kitchen collecting dust.highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Duff is Tuff!
I had the pleasure of briefly speaking to Ms. Duffy this morning in a neighborhood eatery. I approached her to compliment her on her creative recipes and she just lit up like a beautiful Christmas tree. She couldn't have been more gracious about being interrupted during her repast.I've been a fan of hers since her early days and am happy to know that at least we have kitchen-slobbery in common.
Copies of this book are going to be my gifts to all my friendsuntil everyone has one or I run out of friends, whichever comes first. ... Read more
