What did cowboys eat on the range? It's doubtful their "chuck" muchresembled the lively fare offered by restaurateur Tom Perini in TexasCowboy Cooking, a collection of 75 recipes from the Perini RanchSteakhouse. That said, the dishes, which include the likes of Black Beanand Roasted Corn Salad, Oven Roasted Beef Brisket, and Jessica's FavoriteGreen Chili Hominy, are just the thing when the call of meat and Tex-Mexseasoning can't be denied. Illustrated with color photos throughout, thebook provides a big-food journey, noting en route the Texas lore that givesit context. Most readers will probably pass on the Calf Fries, a localdelicacy the author hardly admits are made from beef testicles. But whenPerini talks steak--offering useful cut information and such temptingdishes as a Spicy Beef Tenderloin with Roasted Garlic-Horseradish Cream,Round Steak Rolls, and Laredo Broil, a superior version of marinated flanksteak--you'll want to pay attention. Other standouts include an exemplaryTexas Chili, Winter Squash Soup, Grilled Sourdough with Texas Onion Butter(a recipe for the bread is included), Carrots with Bourbon Sauce, and thefancier Celebration Venison with Ginger and Wine. Desserts aren'tneglected, and simple sweets like Grandmother's Pound Cake, Jane's SweetPotato-Pecan Pie, and Bread Pudding with Whisky Sauce should put a happyend to whatever appetite is left after a massive Perini spread. With ashort but interesting section on cowboy life and informative sidebars(such as Aging Beef), the book provides easily made, easily enjoyed foodfor millennial buckeroos everywhere. --Arthur Boehm ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another level to a classic
The Big Read Series is fantastic. To Kill A Mockingbird has been a favorite of mine since I first read it years ago. To hear other authors, artists, and public figures of that time speak about its origins is fascinating. It adds a whole new level of enjoyment to an already incredible book. I highly recommend the entire series. ... Read more

Product Description
June Carter was born in the rugged mountains of Maces Springs, Virginia, to Ezra and Maybelle Carter, pioneers of country music. On stage from a very young age, June found her niche in the spotlight with her vivacious personality and down-home sense of humor. Her confidence and spirit were what attracted Johnny Cash to her in the late 1950s. On the road together, they quickly bonded. June was his helpmate and closest companion. They were married for forty years, through addiction and success, tragedy and triumph.
Anchored in Love is an inside look into the life of June Carter Cash, through the eyes of her only child with Johnny Cash-John Carter Cash. With skillful prose, he reveals new information about the legendary woman through his tender memories and heartwarming stories. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but unrealistic
The book was entertaining and well written. However it was incredibly biased and over idealistic to the point that I rolled my eyes several times. John Carter paints the portrait of his mother being a saint compared to everyone else around him (his father, his sisters, etc). He barely grazes over his parents' affair and rarely mentions his father's daughters (who are his sisters, but this book wouldn't lead you to believe that). His mother is depicted as a perfect human being, nevermind the adultery or the fact that she "didn't believe in tithe" because she gave enough to her children (!?). The bias and disrespect to the rest of the parties involved is deplorable and, frankly, nauseating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anchored In Love
I enjoyed learning more about Maybelle, Ezra and the whole extended Carter family. The love John Carter Cash has for his mother, June, is evident throughout the book.It is also obvious he had a lot of issues with his parents.I'm sure it was very cathartic for him to write this. But I take issue with John's claim that his mother abused drugs later in life. This accusation casts such a dark shadow on June's memory.Who is left to argue with him?At the time he found his mother in her dressing room (lying on the floor, fully dressed with her eyes closed "meditating") she was in her late 60's.A middle-aged woman, getting ready to perform in spite of chronic back pain, arthritis and painful legs. And he was surprised to find her lying down and using pain medication? She was probably tired and her back hurt!Maybe the reason Johnny Cash never confronted June; or that she refused to "admit" she was addicted, was because it just wasn't true! Sometimes prescription pain medication is actually used for the purpose it was intended...for pain. Her not being as mentally sharp as when she was younger, doesn't prove she had a drugproblem. She "never got angry, fell down, or picked a fight with her loved ones when she was under the influence of narcotics." But "she simply stopped speaking in full sentences and went off into her own world."John was 27 years old, recently out of drug rehab and frustrated by his mother's "emotional abandonment" of him at the time.It is quite possible, John's own chronic drug use, distorted his perception of what really happened.I see June as an aging, emotionally exhausted wife, mother and entertainer, coping as best she could. And since she's not here to defend herself, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.

According to John, his mother was thin until the last two years of her life. Then, due to her love of cheesecake, she became very overweight. She was so heavy they "couldn't" use any of the pictures they took of her with her beloved flowers for her CD cover. Was it really necessary for him to say that about his mother? His dad, Johnny Cash, was quite heavy near the end of his life, but nothing was mentioned about his weight.John also attributes his mother's heart disease to her overindulgence of cheesecake.I doubt very much that it was, DEATH, BY CHEESECAKE! More likely, what shortened June's life was the unrelenting stress she endured over the last three decades of her life. With her mother, father and sisters all gone, June Carter Cash was left with a sporadically addicted, chronically ill husband and a handful of spoiled, addicted adult children.Besides her faith and her music, food was probably a great comfort and solace to her. June, I'm glad you enjoyed your cheesecake, have another piece on me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared
June's picture is onthe cover which might lead you to believe that the book is just about her. The book is about the whole family. It was written by June and Johnny's son John Carter. You must know before you read it that it involves things about June that many many fans do not want to hear.

Johnny was always open and honest about his life and troubles but not June. Many people are very upset with John Carter. You learn that June was as much an addict as Johnny. She had many troubles in her life. But even after hearing this I hope you will feel as I do that IT DOES NOT MATTER...YOU STILL LOVE HER ANYWAY.Nothing changes.

John Jr tells of his teen years, stays in rehab and getting straight. He tells of the death of his sister Rosey. June spoiled her family and no one ever had to do anything for themselves. He tells you about his marriage and his children. He tells about his parents death. Some parts are sad.Butthru it all you know that he was ANCHORED IN LOVE.

It is a good book and I enjoyed it.Don't be to mad at him.It is a what I call a keeper and a re-read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in You, John Carter
I was so excited to get this book.I wanted to know the love of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.Instead, I was so terribly hurt and embarrassed for June and the facts of her life that were better kept secret...but instead sold for money.
Everybody knew Johnny Cash had a drug problem.Nobody needed to know that June did, although she was elderly and trusted that it would be kept in the family forever, I'm sure.
The book began with a useless, uninteresting history lesson that had to be included, otherwise the entire book would have been one sentence, "Mom was a junkie, too."
Disappointing, useless book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking the truth in love
I'm surprised that there weren't more reviews for this amazing grace of a book.John Carter Cash honored his parents by speaking the truth in love and relating precious - and painful - memories.I've admired June Carter Cash for years, but even more so after seeing so many close-up and complex sides to this lovely lady.John inherited his parents' gift for storytelling and used it to bravely share his mother with the world. This book is undoubtedly a tear-jerker (a good thing) and one of the finest I have ever read in my life. ...
