Not up to par with the rest
I've read (and in fact own) all the other Cheney and Cheney/Shiloh books, but can't bring myself to buy this one or read it more than once every couple years, if that. It didn't have the same feel for me as the rest of them did, and I really didn't like the character of Maeva Wilding. Yes, I'll admit, it was partially because she was a threat to the whole Cheney/Shiloh ship, but she was just a weird character that made the whole book sort of a one-off disappointment to me. I love every other book, but this one is just ... different. You lose nothing by skipping it and going to book 3, A City Not Forsaken.

Mixed Bag
If you like to read novels with gripping action scenes, this might be a good read for you. However, if character development is more your forte, you might want to look elsewhere.

This is the first Morris & Morris novel I've read. I appreciate that they depict a strong, unconventional Christian woman in challenging situations. However, even after reading it, I don't feel as if I know the woman, or if there's depth within Cheney's character or Christian walk that I'd care to know about. Also, Cheney's decision at the very end of the book seems inconsistent with a person who cares about a community and its continuing medical needs.

Don't want to totally rain on the book. The authors did a commendable job of drawing you into the suspense of the Ozark Mountain feuds--I could feel my heartbeat speed up during these scenes. It was this particular skill (and the money I paid) that kept me reading until the very end.

Doesn't stand up to the first
Shadow of the Mountains is the only book in the Cheney Duvall series that I recommend you skip. It seems that a good deal of effort was put into building up Cheney and Shiloh's relationship in the first book and then in this book it's all torn down. The characters simply weren't as memorable in the first book of the series and it lacks a sense of adventure that the first had. I suggest that you skip this book in the series and move onto the next. You'll be missing nothing.

Good reading for the most part.
I enjoyed the book overall, although I wished they had been a little more specific about how the people who wanted to steal everyone's land were convinced to give up their plan.Despite how the synopsis on the cover is written, Cheney actually did make some friends among the mountain people - you would think they were 100% against her in every way by that description! ... Driven with the Wind
I have been reading this series of stories amd found that the final book #8(which I have since ordered from Amazon) was no longer in print.It was a disappointment to me.I was delighted to find it available online through Amazon.com.The used book arrived in record time by mail and was in excellent condition.This book is the answer that I wanted to know since the #2 book in the series.It definitely worth obtaining.

The dramatic conclusion to the Cheney Duvall Md books.
This book is the 8th book in the set and the last book of the Cheney Duvall Md books.It is about Shilo who has found out who his family is and a woman Dr.Shilo is a Nurse, a buisnessman, a plantation owner in Hawaii, and owns a shiping company.Cheney (the Dr.) is a great Doctor, comes from a wealty family, a Christian, and is in love with Shilo.She knows that Shilo loves her too, but that she can not marry him.The reason is they have different views on faith.
Shilo also has a cousin that hates him because Shilo inherited his fathers' money and buisness.Not to mention because Shilo is the man Bain (Shilos cousin) wants to be.So Bain plots to destroy Cheney and Shilo.Will he get his revenge on Shilo and Cheney?Will Shilo finally become a Christian?Will they Get married?I will leave that for the book to tell.
(P.S.Lynn Morris has started a new series with these two awesome characters.It is called Where Two seas Meet.)

conclusive, yet disappointing...
From the moment I read the first book in the Cheney series, I was instantly hooked. The characters were warm and very believable. I loved the way they interacted with each other. Their feelings and emotions were wonderfully characterized. Lynn Morris brought history and research in, while Gilber Morris brought heart and credibility to the characters. The combination was a fabulous one. One that left me captivated and hungry for more each and every time I picked up one of the books...
I was anxiously awaiting this book. Driven With the Wind is the last of this awesome, and one of my all time favorite series. I had heard in advance that Lynn Morris would be the main writer, with Gilbert backing off to work on his other series. From the first chapter, his absence was painfully obvious. The glow...the heart of the characters were gone. The book was just that...a conclusion to the serious. All the loose ends were neatly tied, the proposal was right on cue and then it all comes to a close. I was left thinking..."that was it?" Something was missing...I think it was heart. The warmth between the characters that Gilbert was so adept at creating, was gone. There were also noticable inconsistencies in the characters. Cheney's helper Nia, who had a soft southern accent, suddenly didn't have it. And though Cheney and Shiloh are two well developed characters and acted pretty much they way they should, it made you feel as though you were just reading about what happened...not experiencing it along with them. No strong emotions were brought forth, I was just left with the sense that it was all...lacking.
I gave this book four stars because it was the conclusion to an AWSOME series. The others are memorable and very very well done. I highly recommend this series, just prepare yourself for the rather dry end...

Not the best of the series, but very important
What's with all the whiners who reviewed this book?Almost everybody didn't like Cheney and Shiloh "changed" personalities, but I seem to recall their personalities changing back and forth in previous books too - Shiloh angered Cheney by spending time with Maeva Wilding in Book 2, and he was seldom anywhere near Cheney in Book 3; yet in Books 4 and 5, he was there all the time, helping Cheney get around Charleston and taking care of sick people on the Louisiana plantation.Yes, Bain's actions are unbelievable, but he's not a completely stable person anyway, and many real-life people also do things that don't make sense!Yes, parts of the book are frustrating, but if I gave up on all books with frustrating parts, I would never have read another Cheney Duval book after the first one (nor would I have tried to read the "House of Winslow" series).Everyone has different likes and dislikes, and the Morris's can't possibly please everyone.

Also Disappointed
I was very disappointed with this book. Cheney and Shiloh were completely out of character. After reading the books in this series over a dozen times each, I felt like I knew Cheney and Shiloh as if they were my friends. In Driven With the Wind, Cheney and Shiloh are complete strangers to me, and the plot is weak, to say the least. After my first reading, I was very disappointed. But I hoped it would improve with a second reading. Or a third. Or a fourth. But it doesn't. If possible, it gets worse.

The whole proposal scene is ridiculous and forced. You never for one second forget that you are reading a book. It's lacks the "realness" of the other books.

The way Shiloh acted was totally out of sync with how his personality had developed over the past 7 books. He never would have treated Cheney as shabbily as the authors portrayed, regardless of how much he was hurt.

I always liked the medical aspect of the series, and it is completely absent in this book. Cheney's character doesn't mature or grow as it did in previous books.

The plot with Dev and Victoria lacks development, and is also rather absurd when seriously considered.

Shiloh's conversion scene lacks originality. It is also much too sudden in light of his attitude throughout the series.

The whole situation with Bain is absolutely ridiculous, and makes little sense. It is still very mystifying to me exactly what he hoped to accomplish with what he did to Cheney. If he wanted to hurt Shiloh, and if he was as much of a villain as he was portrayed, he would have done much more than simply lock her up.

Overall, I thought this book lacked the originality and excitement of the first 7 books. I enjoyed each of the books in the series more than the last until I got to this one. I almost wish they had stopped while they were ahead, or else given much more thought to the plot and the characters' consistency before writing Driven With the Wind. ... Read more

GREAT SERIES.........
This is a great series!!!Gilbert and Lynn Morris are terrific authors!The plots and characters are so well developed and I am always anxious to get to the next book!

Mostly a good book, with some long stretches.
Cheney takes a job in a San Francisco hospital as its first female physician.Despite a few problems that erupt, for the most part she enjoys her job, with occasional outings with her friends.Shiloh meets Bain Winslow from Hawaii, who turns out to be his first real lead as to who his real parents are.Some parts of this book may seem frustrating, while others go very quickly.This is probably one of the most important books in the series (and of course, you have to read them all to know what's going on)!

Can't wait!
This is a really good book. with each of the Cheney books, you think you can't get any more climatic, then suddenly You are suprised and left gasping for breath! Book six is taking the cake. can't wait, can't wait!out of the series, Book six isn't my favorite. but it is absolutelynecessary background for continuing the series. So much happens withCheney, and With Shiloh. It's one more step towards finding his family, andOne more step for Cheney in trusting God with her whole life, especiallyher emotions. Gilbert and Lyn Morris do it again!!
Once again Gilbert and his daughter Lyn Morris provide us with quality and entertaining piece of reading.In the Twilight, In the Evening is a wonderful example of what a fine writting team that we have in our world. As always it is a pleasure to sit down and read a novel by these two, but Icouldn't help but feel disappointed that the last novel in this series wassuch a long way from publication.For as it always is books in a seriesleave you in a state of fustration wanting to know what is going tohappern. The characters in this story are so believeable that it is nothard to grow to love them and find yourself anxious to know that they aresafe and have found the elusive happily ever after.I have spent much timefollowing the antics of Dr. Cheney Duvall and her friend Victoria.Manytimes i have been moved to laughter and tears by the soulful writing ofthis father-daughter team.If you are looking for a book that is filledwith historical accuracy and an indepth look into the experiences and theplight of the Chinese in Eighteenth Century San Francisco, you will not gowrong with this book.It is an enjoyable read from which you will walkaway with a new insight into history.

I love the series and enjoyed this book.
This is one of the better Cheney Duvall books. It has some loose ends, but those are quickly tied up in #7, which I have read.
