5-0 out of 5 stars Film Buff's Bible
For anyone who appreciates every aspect and every fibre on the history of the Hollywood film system, this is a great guide to keep by your bedside.

Not only are you given a timeline that follows over a hundred years worth of events and headlines, but the book also covers the technical side of todays modern day film making, and also the language used by todays truly acclaimed filmakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relatively comprehensive look at the American Film Institute
There are plenty of good books available on what films are out there and other books of the art of making films. We can find vertical market books on specific subjects that are film related. However this book is exactly hat the title implies. There is more depth to this book than just an overview or an introduction book. Although this book could be a good coffee table book it also makes a good desk reference book.

With 608 pages, most containing partial if not totally glossy color snaps from the famous and obscure movies of our time. The different subject or chapters have color coded tabs on the edge of the page allowing for quickly finding the information sought.

Although designed as a reference I found it more fun to read page by page picking up gems here and there that would never have been found by just reference searches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best film book ever
Great one. All types of information and fun. Just get it!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide for Those New to Film
I guess I should have realized from the title that this wouldn't be a comprehensive and in-depth guide. It is a good overview of film history and important movies for those just coming to know classic cinema.Otherwise, it is a bit basic and leaves a lot to be desired. The photos are great, the paper glossy, it's just that the message is a bit on the thin side.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Absolutely Perfect...
...especially if you are a film student and/or studying for a movie trivia game show. I love that it has loads of pictures and tables/lists. Plus, it has any and everything you need to know about the movies. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who would like to know more about film. I promise, you won't be disappointed! :-) ... Product Description
Named "Best Jazz Book of 2008" by The Jazz Journalists Association

"2009 Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research" by ARSC (Association for Recorded Sound Collections)

Legendary African American jazz bassist and photographer Milt Hinton (1910-2000) tells his compelling life story and illustrates it with more than 260 of his photographs, exquisitely reproduced in this collectors' edition.

Hinton's stories--witnessing a lynching as a child in Mississippi, working for Al Capone, breaking the color line in the recording studio--are equal to his celebrated photographs: capturing life on the road with Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday at her last recording date, and personal and professional views of icons such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Barbra Streisand. Playing the Changes draws from Hinton and Berger's earlier Bass Line, but differs significantly from that 1988 classic. Milt's narrative takes up where the earlier story left off, and more than 140 new photographs augment 115 of his best-known images. It also boasts a CD of Milt telling stories and performing music, as well as a discography and filmography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Judge" Speaks
Milt Hinton's beautiful book "Playing the Changes" is filled with anecdotes and photos (which he took) covering sixty years of his life as a jazz musician. The photos alone are worth the price of this expensive volume. However, the chronologically arranged anecdotes allow the reader to gain insight not only into the life of a professional musician, but they add to our understanding of the evolution of jazz during six decades of the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Milt Hinton: playing the Changes
This is a terrific book with an engaging autobiographical text as well as Milt's stunning photos of jazz greats captured in informal moments - a must for lovers of the classic jazz of the thirties, forties and fifties. ... Read more

Product Description
The cowboy and his environment are among the most evocative, enigmatic, and surprisingly romantic icons of the American experience. Though considered an anachronistic occupation, the cowboy survives, and contemporary cowboy life is masterfully revealed in this new book of large-format duotone photographs. The apparent isolation of life on the range is balanced by the pride the cowboys exude in their work, and in the tightly bound communities in which they live and operate.

Gathering Remnants presents a world ruled by tradition and a strong ingrained work ethic, which fires our imagination and connects us to our own primal needs for rugged individualism. What makes this book unique is the photographer’s ability to capture the authenticity and solidarity of the cowboy’s world—vast, flat rangeland that is striking in its subtle beauty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful job
I saw the film of this book at a film festival in Boise, ID a year or so ago. I was so taken by the beauty and the quality of it I chased the presenter down, lost sight of her and then went from one email address to another until I contacted her. I bought the film and now have the book. I've lived in Idaho off and on for a few years now and can say that the absolute beauty of the area, the people and the way of life there are wonderfully captured in this book and film. I'd recommend this to anyone who still believes that there is a code to live by, honesty, hard work and being true to a way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
Kendall Nelson captures her subject well.I saw her photos on display at my friend's house and she showed me the book.I couldn't afford the photos, but the book was right in my range.Book is great.Photos are wonderful.I especially enjoy the photo of the cowgirl and her dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shooting cowboys and buckaroos on the open range
Here's another book of fine photography devoted to cowboys and buckaroos, this time put together by three women. It's a big oversize book, with 48 black and white plates by California photographer Kendall Nelson. The rather worshipful and romantic text is by German-born writer Felicitas Funke-Riehle. Gretel Ehrlich has provided an introduction about the lonely, hard work of a cowboy, written in her own meticulous eye-for-detail style. (Clint Eastwood has a brief 5-sentence foreword.)

The photos were taken 1996-1999 on several ranches in Nevada, with some additional shots taken in Texas, Wyoming, and Idaho. Most of them are of individual cowboys, many with their horses. Typically they are captured against a sweeping terrain under a big sky with scattered clouds. A buckaroo gathers sage brush for a branding fire. Another sits in the open flap of a teepee tent bent over a silver bit he's repairing, Four vaqueros sit in the shade against a wall, smoking cigarettes, the oldest of them watching the photographer.

Cowboys move cattle through sage brush, raising clouds of dust. A cowboss stands with his wife and son against the plank walls of a shed, their three border collies gathered at their feet. A man leans, head down against a fence, snow collecting on the brim of his hat. The photographs capture the relentless, hard work of these men and something of their solitude. Even as they wait for their horses (see cover photograph) they stand separately, keeping a distance between them. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cowboys, cattle ranching, Western life, and thoughtful photography. For vintage photographs of cowboys, I suggest also Richard Collins' "The American Cowboy."

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic cowboy photos
Timeless black and white photography of a timeless subject, Cowboys of the American West. Well done with an obvious emotional connection to her work. A must for everyone's home and heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to the American west - you'll love it!
If you have any interest in cowboys or the American west, you'll love this book. The stunning photographs and elegent text tell the story of a simple, rugged lifestyle that is, sadly, disappearing all too quickly from our national landscape.

You'll want to keep this one handy to look at again and again. And it makes a great gift! ... Read more

Product Description

Clint Eastwood's career has been unmatched in the history of Hollywood. A popular TV star, he was catapulted to film stardom as 'The Man With No Name' in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns. Once established as a star, he became the John Wayne of his era, an American icon whose box-office drawing power remained undiluted three decades later, despite unfriendly critics, unfavourable gossip and unspectacular forays into politics and political life.

Uniquely, Eastwood used his new-found star status to launch a second, and arguably more successful career as a director, which reached its apex when he was awarded the 1992 Best Picture Oscar for Unforgiven. Following his other mentor, Don Siegel, Eastwood's reputation as a director is that of a solid professional who makes films without wasting time or money. His output has followed a dual path of popular action films and more personal projects which display a range which confounds those who label him as an action star. Those paths intersect in his epic westerns, several of which can stand with the great films of the genre.

This book analyses all of Eastwood's films as a director, and includes information about his acting career, particularly those films directed by members of his 'stock company', as well as tracing the influences of Leone, Siegel and others on his work.

Chapters: Clint Eastwood in the 1970s. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 84. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: In the 1970s, Clint Eastwood's acting career was at its peak. n 1970, Eastwood starred in the western, Two Mules for Sister Sara with Shirley MacLaine. The film, directed by Siegel, is a story about an American mercenary who gets mixed up with a whore disguised as a nun and aid a group of Juarista rebels during the puppet reign of Emperor Maximilian in Mexico. The story was initially written by Budd Boetticher, who was later sacked and replaced with Albert Maltz to revise the script. The film saw Eastwood embody the tall mysterious stranger once more, unshaven, wearing a serape-like vest and smoking a cigar and the film score was composed by Morricone. However, although the film also had Leonesque dirty Hispanic villains, the film was considerably less crude and more sardonic than those of Leone. The role of Sister Sara was initially offered to Elizabeth Taylor during the filming of Where Eagles Dare (Taylor then being the wife of Richard Burton) but had to turn down the role because she wanted to shoot in Spain where Burton was filming his latest movie. Although Sister Sara was supposed to be Mexican, they eventually cast Shirley MacLaine although they were initially unconvinced with her pale complexion. Both Siegel and Eastwood felt intimidated by her onset, and Siegel described Clint's co-star as, "It's hard to feel any great warmth to her. She's too unfeminine and has too much balls. She's very, very hard." Two Mules for Sister Sara also marked the last time that Eastwood would receive second billing for a film and it would be 25 years until he risked being overshadowed by a leading lady again in The Bridges of Madison County (1995). The film, which took four months to...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=26412203 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The title "Complete" could not be more appropriate!
Having spent most of my adult lifetime in the music industry and as well having worked for almost twenty years at WB, involved (promotion) in a number of Quincy Jones' projects, I thought I had a pretty good handle on the man, his music and his career. After spending quality time with this book, I stand corrected. This book gives the reader and amazingly deep view of all parts of this amazing man's life and in doing so I find new depth in all of his work. Regardless of your musical preferences, this is a must read book and one you will return to again and again long after your first read through...

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless mother's day gift
This was bought for my mother for Mother's Day. She is the reason why music is a passion of mine. We both know that Q is the top music maestro of all time. I skimmed through it and plan to also get the book for myself. A great coffee table conversation piece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quincy Jones is a legend!
I do admire the man and his genius work. But the truth that I bough this book because of Michael Jackson. There was part that Quincy recalled about the making of Thriller and his time with Michael Jackson. Also, the story behind "We Are The World".Thank you Quincy for bringing out the best of Michael Jackson and many other artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably amazing!
I purchased this book with a birthday present gift card. It is beyond fabulous. The personal memorabilia that he has placed in the book is reproduced so well, that it seems like you actually have the real things at your disposal.I was so excited when I purchased the book and I was not disappointed at all. I am a great admirer of Mr. Jones because he is not only a musician and producer, but also, a composer and arranger. He defies stereotypes for African American musicians, yet he is quintessentially African American. He has embraced and arranged/composed for all musical mediums. He has no limits to his reach and creativity.I have several biographies on musicians and this is by far the best one. The combination of pictures, writing, and memorabilia help to create an "experience" that goes beyond just reading a bio, or just looking at a coffee table book.I highly recommend the book to all fans of Quincy Jones, and to those who want to get a glimpse of how he collaborated with musicians and entertainers across all genres.I would also recommend the book to young musicians who aspire to greatness, they can get a glimpse of how great a life a musician and a committed humanitarian can have. "Q" is most definitely an American Icon and a national treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Foold and His Bunny:The Art of Will Bullas
This is one of those special and unique books. The paintings are exquisite, and some of them are so hilarious... I recommend this book. Enjoy !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great stress-buster!
I spent the Fourth of July weekend watching the news on TV as the Florida brushfires moved closer to Orlando. The air was heavy with smoke and ash and the really frightening thing about it was that NOTHING seemed to stop the conflagration's exorable march across the state. I picked up " A Fool and His Bunny: the Art of Will Bullas" because I could not concentrate on anything heavier with all of the bad news coming in over the media.

This zany book was the greatest stress-buster of the holiday. Seeing Bullas' "punky derm" and "last call for the bear bar" made me realize that we humans take ourselves too seriously. Maybe we couldn't have fireworks or backyard cookouts or even leave the city because most of the roads were closed, but I was safe and comfortable and able to laugh at the absurdities of Bullas' wonderful paintings. I still don't know why the introduction was written by Clint Eastwood, but maybe that, too, is a subtle putdown! The book raised my spirits. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dirty Mcgilligan
Patrick McGilligan's "unauthorized" biography of film giant Clint Eastwood is dedicated to "Mom." If Mrs. McGilligan bothered to read the book, she might have said "Thanks, but no thanks," and request that her name be removed from such a seamy book. Of course, McGilligan could argue that it isn't his book that's offensive, but the life of its subject. I think it's a little of both.

If McGilligan is correct, Eastwood's public image is a sham. Widely praised for his loyalty, the Eastwood in McGilligan's book banishes lifelong friends from his circle should they dare ask for even a tiny crumb of the pie they helped bake. Producers, directors, editors, writers, all of them working for comparative peanuts, become "non-persons" in the eyes of Clint the squint, and they are exiled from his Malpaso production company and from the film industry itself because, they insist, the big man is vindictive, and uses his considerable influence to deprive them of their right to make a living. But the macho icon is also a coward who loathes confrontation and never fires anyone directly, letting others do his dirty work for him. Rich beyond mere tabulation, Dirty Harry's Republican alter ego slams welfare and brags that he worked for "every crust of bread" he ever ate, yet never pays for a meal, insisting on being "comped" wherever he goes. And as a filmmaker, his legendary habit of delivering films ahead of schedule and under budget is nothing but carelessness and a wiliness to accept subpar work to keep his budgets low and his percentages high.

He's also a womanizer whose relationships produced numerous illegitimate children, an opportunist who used his brief reign as Mayor of Carmel for his own financial gain, and a father in name only.

Then there's that temper. Anyone who dares park in his unmarked space on the Warner lot will know holy terror as Eastwood vandalizes their vehicle with a golf club, hammer, or a pickup truck. Good luck if you sue him in court, especially with a judge who asks for his autograph.

As someone who always thought highly of Eastwood personally no matter what I thought of his films (most of which I admire), I found this account of his life rather disturbing, but the book is disturbing in ways that have more to do with McGilligan than Eastwood. The punctuation is often a mess with periods appearing outside quotation marks, and the spelling is often questionable, with the author spelling tires as "tyres" when describing the ludicrous climax of The Gauntlet. Maybe the guy is English and doesn't always Americanize his language but the biographical notes describe him as living in Missouri, so that may not be an excuse.

There are also more substantial errors. McGilligan has Ronald Reagan appropriating Dirty Harry's famous "Make my day" speech from Sudden Impact in March 1983, nine months before the film is released. And he gets other dates wrong: In his world, Paint Your Wagon opened a year later than it did, and Escape from Alcatraz debuts in the Christmas season of 1979 when, in fact, it opened the previous June. One can excuse errors here and there, but release dates can be easily verified, and McGilligan makes them consistently. If he can't get a film's release date right, how much faith can we have in his account of incidents from Eastwood's life, incidents at which the author was not present?

If nothing else, this book's sloppy research suggests McGilligan suffers from one of the same personality flaws for which he frequently reprimands his subject. Eastwood, he says, is always happy with the first draft of the screenplays he stars in and/or directs, never requesting and always resisting rewrites (perhaps because they require shelling out cash, something the miserly multi-millionaire is loathe to do). McGilligan's book reads like a first draft that never made it to the proofreader. Perhaps a quote from the Bible is in order here: "Judge not lest ye be judged."

McGilligan's book is certainly an improvement over Richard Shickel's earlier look at the Hollywood titan. McGilligan is fairly thorough, offering more information about Eastwood's ancestry than we might even want to know about our own, and providing a more subjective view of the star's contribution to the cinema. Thankfully, he never fawns over Eastwood the way "critic" Schickel did in his "authorized" bio, but one may be tempted to wonder if he went too far in the opposite direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating portrait
McGilligan has produced another great biography with his book on Clint. It's a fascinating portrait of the enigmatic Eastwood which looks at his films and private life. For those out there who have found Clint's recentfilms (including the over rated UNFORGIVEN)somewhat slapdash, MrMcGilligan's book provides some answers. While fans of Clint might findthis bio somewhat harsh about their hero, it comes across as a reasonablyfair portrait of the actor/director. This is a thoroughly gripping readand,as usual, the author has supplied his reference sources in greatdetail. Highly recommended. ... Read more
