Excerpt: from the album Abbey Road "Because" is a ballad written by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and performed by The Beatles. It features a 3-part harmony vocal performance between Lennon, McCartney and George Harrison, overdubbed three times to make nine voices in all. The results of this have been compared in sound to the Beach Boys. It appeared on the 1969 album Abbey Road, and is the song that precedes the extended medley that formed side two of the original LP record. The song begins with electric harpsichord played by George Martin and then joined by Lennon's guitar doubling the harpsichord and played through a Leslie speaker. Vocals and bass guitar enter in what Alan Pollack calls the "mini-bridge." The song was one of the few Beatles songs to include an analogue synthesizer arrangement (although analog keyboards such as the Mellotron had been used often by The Beatles, few songs featured the use of a traditional analog synthesizer with voltage-controlled oscillators). The Beatles at the time of Abbey Road were among the first contemporary rock bands to experiment with the Moog synthesizer (the first, or at least the first to chart on the top 40, had been The Monkees). According to Lennon, "Because" was inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". "Yoko was playing Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' on the piano ... I said, 'Can you play those chords backwards?', and wrote 'Because' around them. The lyrics speak for themselves ... No imagery, no obscure references." The main recording session for "Because" was on 1 August 1969, with...http://booksllc.net/?id=1398799 ... Read more

With the release of PHP 5 web developers need a guide to developing with PHP 5 to both learn its complex new features and more fully implement the long-standing features on which PHP's success is built. PHP 5 in Practice is a reference guide that provides developers with easy-to-use and easily extensible code to solve common PHP problems. It focuses on providing real code solutions to problems, allowing the reader to learn by seeing exactly what is happening behind the scenes to get your solution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Ideas and Examples for the Developer
This is a very worthwhile book to own.It is very well laid out with every aspect of developing in PHP covered in one or another. I especially liked the in depth (but practical) treatment of areas where as a developer you need to have a grasp of how the language can perform. For example, graphing, how to traverse binary trees, sorting, managing databases etc. These are some of the basic requirements needed both by the language and the developer.

In this sense, the book is first class and delivers what the title says, PHP in Practice. I was initially wondering why there were not simple screen shots demonstrating some of the tools and techniques, but am now grateful that screen shots were not included as it would have meant less space for the actual examples of "PHP in Practice".In fact I got to enjoy reading the code and visualising the result and sometimes experimenting and applying the code.

A book worth every bit of its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for PHP Developers of All Levels
I had taken a beginner's course in PHP web development and wanted to learn some more in depth techniques. I had read a positive review of this book on another website and went ahead and bought it. When I got the book, I read the table of contents and found a whole chapter on email. All other books I have read only spent a paragraph or two on email. The chapter in this book went into formatting, verifying and sending email. That chapter alone made it worth the money.

The rest of the book is very easy to read and very informative. Each chapter opens up with an overview of the topics and a reference to the functions used in the chapter. This book makes a great desktop reference as well as a learning tool. So whatever your experience level, I recomend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Someday I really need to start using PHP
I started my web site in the 90's and used Perl for everything.Over the years, Perl has just intertwined my site so thoroughly that I HAVE to use it.But I do recognize that PHP is the more popular choice, so I'm always interested in books like this.

I like the "Quick Hits" sections - these are at the beginning of chapters and just give quick examples of relevant functions. The first chapter started with string handling, certainly a common task in web programming and it was helpful to see that quick overview.

I also liked that the author deals with real world examples. The title is "in practice", and he lives up to that.He examines real web site problems and desires, and provides PHP solutions.

I enjoyed this.If I can get off my duff and move forward with PHP, I'm sure this will be helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Insight
Gives you a look to the inside of the killers mind. It's like watch criminal minds from the killers side!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much bias by the author
I could barely get through the first two chapters of this book as I found theauthor's views intruding too much.As to what to do about such humans I am never a supporter of the death penalty as it is uncivilized so life without parole is just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual angle on serial killers
Leyton is an anthropologist, and this study of serial killers focuses on sociocultural factors rather than individual pathology as a cause of multiple murder. Specifically, Leyton examines how class conflict has contributed to serial killings in different epochs. In the Middle Ages, royalty killed serfs; in the Industrial Age of the 19th century, the nouveau middle class killed prostitutes and other individuals from the lower rungs, and in the modern era serial killers target those who are just one rung up from them in the social ladder.

Leyton argues that modern multiple murderers are class-conscious and socially conservative men who are obsessed with status, class, and power. Emboldened by our cultural glorification of violence and serial killers, and trapped in alienating lives that do not match their class strivings, they kill the objects of their desire. And they keep killing until they feel that they have accomplished the mission that they set out on. It's a very interesting analysis, although I think Leyton selected case studies that fit his thesis and ignored others that did not. (He profiles Ted Bundy, Edmund Kemper, David Berkowitz, and four other cases, including the D.C. snipers in his new edition, but he ignores - for example - Jeffrey Dahmer, whose predilection for young Cambodian boys goes against his thesis.) Also, the fact that documented serial killers in the Middle Ages were royalty may be due to documentation issues; maybe serfs who killed serfs never made the history books (a possibility Leyton doesn't mention).

But these are minor limitations. The book is well researched and well written, and it is certainly refreshing to see a treatment of this topic that does not ignore the macro perspective of class, race, and culture. In my own forensic psychology practice, I have found it helpful to keep Leyton's perspective in mind, while still not ignoring the developmental wrong-turns and individual pathologies that also contribute to multiple murder. Overall, this book is well worth reading for anyone interested in the etiology of serial murder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the classic work
I first read Hunting Humans 15 or so years ago and I have recently bought the new edition. It is a fascinating insight into the minds and motivations of serial killers, although I think Leyton struggles somewhat to fit them all into his particular thesis. Ted Bundy was extremely bright and personable and started his killing spree after his girlfriend had accepted an offer of marriage which he promptly withdrew two days later. Almost without exception, his victims all resembled this woman. He was also a necrophiliac, returning to have sex with his victims even when they were in an advanced state of decomposition. Perhaps my favourite part of the book, and one I often quote when faced with 'expert opinion' , regards the 'gentle giant' Edmund Kemper. He had spent several years incarcerated as a teenager for brutally murdering his grandparents (yes, they let him out!), and he was in the psychiatrist's office getting his release papers. The good doctor wished him well and felt certain that the young Kemper would go on to have a productive and useful life. At that very moment Kemper's car was parked outside. In the boot were the two severed heads of his latest victims. Chilling, but absolutely gripping reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the minds of serial killers
Elliott Leyton (author) has written a superb detailed book focusing on 6 modern serial killers/modern mass murderers. Edmund Kemper, Ted Bundy (the charming young Republican), Albert Desalvo (the social climber known as The Boston Strangler), David Berkowitz (Son of Sam), Mark Essex (the racist) & Charles Starkweather. Leyton also touches upon other 'famous' killers to try and argue his case that all these killers are not alien people with deranged minds, but *'alienated men with a disinterest in continuing the dull lives in which they feel trapped.'(*author's quote). The book tries to go inside these killers minds (and backgrounds) to try and understand why they, as individuals, committed these crimes. Were all their childhood backgrounds so tragic as to contribute towards their eventual decline? If so, why do individuals with equally tragic (or more so) backgrounds choose not to kill? The book also seperates truth from fantasy. What we see in films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal etc may all be very compelling action and drama, and highly enjoyable to watch, but we must not make the mistake of believing that these films are based on reality. Leyton has done a thorough job of disecting these cases one by one, and the painstaking research that he has conducted is evident on every page. Buying this book will be well worth your time and money, for it may just be the one book that may well stimulate your thoughts enough to question everything you thought you knew about serial killers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction
This book is a great primer for getting to know the man behind the magic, what motivates him, and how he works. That might all sound somewhat mundane but given the deeply spiritual, and at first exposure "abstract", nature of the work David does, learning the concrete grounded narrative of his evolution is helpful and inspiring. And it's a pretty fascinating narrative at that.

Truth be told, you have to hear the man's VOICE, you have to experience him HEARING YOU, to really "get" what he does. His "Manifest" and "Meditation" cd's, not to mention his incredibly illuminating phone consultations (and from what I hear, his workshops as well), are really where it's at when analyzing/reviewing David Elliot.I know this from (blessed) first-hand experience and I am a true believer in his practice and the empowerment he is here to teach and share. That said, reading t/his "story" can demystify what may seem to be a very complex healing practice - and if that motivates you to invest in his cd's etc that can only be a good good thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing!!
This man/book/cd has changed my life forever! We are all given tools in life but are they the right one's?Maybe we were inherited tools that just don't match our being.David's book and meditation cd's have changed my life.I have dropped the old tools that were given to me by birth and replaced with the truth.Truth will set you free if you want to be free.It works if you want your energy to be alive and thriving.Just being able to be taught how to get out of our head and out of the way to allow Spirit to flow through and see what magic happens is a beautiful thing! There are many therapist and drugs out there to get you here...but why not do it naturally? We all have the power to get anywhere we want if we believe in self.David teaches you that and so much more.I am also a massage therapist and his book and cd's and products have helped not only myself but many clients. It goes beyond self...when your light is on..everyone feels it, sees it and wants some of it!So get this book and cd's and start manifesting your life now! What are you waiting for?

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Breath
I am 61 years old and learned the pranayama yoga breathing techniqe from David Elliott at a workshop in the fall of 2005. I was facing surgery and my blood pressure had been elevated for several months. After using the CD for only a few days my blood pressure went down to 115/75 - my doctor was incredulous.David teaches people to heal themselves by simply breathing. He describes this technique in a way anyone can understand on this CD - the idea is to get away from all the constant chatter in our heads.I use this CD at least once a day.The flute in the background and the guided meditation leave me refreshed, focused, and calm.I stop rushing and life is back in proper perspective. The flute music continues after the meditation ends.

5-0 out of 5 stars calming the soul
David's technique is an incredible way to open your heart and spirit to the divine. David allows the divine and your spirit to do the work together. This technique calms the mind and clears away the mindless chatter of our everyday world and stress which edges out our connection to what is truly important. I have tried "meditation" before, but all too often it is some New Age music coupled with a guru of sorts talking too much. David has the gift of being the conduit between the divine and one's personal needs to allow the flow of energy and healing from the divine to your spirit and soul. I highly recommend this cd as it is life changing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
David Elliott's CD for Meditation is brilliant! I've searched the world over for many years and finally found an incredible gift that has been given for all of us to gain Spiritual strength and awarness. My life has changed to be ONE with Spirit! What better could that be................... How cool is that!!!! ... Read more
