Product Description
Since she first burst onto the international music scene, Melissa Etheridge has released seven albums that have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, garnering not only public adoration for her uncompromising honesty but numerous critical awards, including two Grammys and the prestigious ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award. The Truth Is . . . is a highly charged autobiography—a bold and unflinching account of an extraordinary life that Melissa describes as only she can: from her Kansas roots, through her early love of music, to her brilliant rise to superstardom in a male-dominated rock world. Melissa openly discusses the massive impact of her publicly coming out, a revelation that only increased her popularity, making her a highly visible spokesperson for the gay and lesbian community. The Truth Is . . . shares Melissa Etheridge’s fascinating story with unprecedented candor and insight.Amazon.com Review
She's not in Kansas anymore! Melissa Etheridge, the gutsy Midwest girl who grew up to be the heartland's gift to rock & roll (and a major gayspokeswoman) tells all in her memoir, The Truth Is.... With a littlehelp from Laura Morton, the bestselling collaborator of Marilu Henner andJoan Lunden, Etheridge sets the record straight about her life on andoff the stage, her coming-out drama, and the stories behind her songs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very much the public Melissa Etheridge
Melissa Etheridge's website identifier includes the words "Speak Truth" abd "Be Strong." In this autobiography, she seems driven to do both. It is said that a story often has more of an impact than a statement, and this book demonstrates this philosophy in her exploration of both her life and her music. While the details of her life seem inordinately tied to the specifics of her many lovers, they do so in a way that is classic Etheridge---the woman who "came out" publically apparantly without advanced discussion with her lover, the woman who revealed the father of her first two children without talking to their mother or the sperm donor (David Crosby). One begins to question whether she has an authentic life, or just a very public "voyage" where every detail of the journey must be shared and therefore externally validated. I do not find that such revelations make her strong, although this is clearly her belief. Her examination of her parallel life in music, her lyrics, and the strength she gained from her musical life grounds discussion of lovers.
I found the book to be reasonably written for the genre, and a (sadly) accurate statement of Melissa Etheridge's life to date, with a continued "constant searching" to be loved, finding satisfaction only on stage , with fans creating the energy to keep her going. Nonetheless, I will look for her promised update and more attention to her third mantra "Do Good"---which she is certainly doing on many fronts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight into a public yet private figure
Melissa Etheridge has long been my favorite music artist. Even my e-mail address references her. Her music has always touched me in a way other music doesn't. So when I suddenly discovered (I tend to be rather oblivious at times) that she had written a book, I jumped at reading it.

I absolutely loved this book. I'd known about her relationship with Julie Cypher, but not any details. Reading that alone made the book worth reading, but everything else that she included just put it over the top,

There were many things she shared that surprised me. Not only were they things I just somehow didn't expect from her, but she had a level of honesty that you don't often find in anyone anymore, much less a public figure. Her mantra is "Speak True" and she really does.

I highly recommend this book for any Melissa fan. It gives insight into her as a person as well as into her music. It shows not only how her songs changed from when she wrote them to when they were released, and also just how they changed over time as she grew and matured. It's a very entertaining, thought provoking read.

4-0 out of 5 stars good read
good read. A little too much on the relationships instead of the music and music biz from her view. Melissa rocks.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Is . . . Melissa's Book Is Good
I'm a die-hard Melissa fan.I have every one of her albums and have lost count of the number of her concerts I've been to.That being said, I thought Melissa's book was very interesting.Although it's not a "here's every detail of my life" kind of autobiography, it provides some real insight into her music and life. The book is really easy to read (I finished it in one sitting of a couple hours) and tells a good story.Bottom line:for anyone who is a Melissa fan, this book is sure to please.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not alone in the rip off!
Glad to read the other review... I was right ticked off to have to pay for return of my order as well. Amazon misrepresents the product which appears to be an autobiography but is, in fact, sheet music. I would like a shipping refund, personally.
(unable to rate zero stars on this one... but that would reflect the product vs the service!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Skin. Guitar music.

When you originally bought the item and when you get to return it. The selections for return don't provide for an Amazon screw-up. We're really P.O.'ed. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not thorough, and inaccurate
Chris Nickson seems to supplement his income as a music critic in Seattle by researching and writing unauthorized biographies about stars such as Melissa Etheridge, Mariah Carey, and Soundgarden. The problem is, none ofthe research is original at all....his entire book is swiped, withoutattribution, from already published interviews. There is not a singlething in this book that fans don't already know, and Joyce Luck's Melissabiography (which was also unauthorized, though I hear Melissa and hermanagement liked the book) at least had some new, previously unpublishedinfo and photos in it.Plus Nickson's book is just riddled with errors(for example, it says John Shanks was with the band during the Never Enoughtour, which is totally false). One good thing about Nickson is that he atleast doesn't have a problem with Melissa's lesbianism.Other than thatI'd say his book's a total flop.

2-0 out of 5 stars No new information here for Etheridge fans
If you are already an Etheridge fan, this book holds no new information. Everything seems to have come from previously published articles, and some of that information is incorrect. (i.e., Arduous Moon and Theresa's Tattoo are not the same movie under different titles). The narrative style is irritatingly omniscient, assuming the emotions of the principles. It is shallow reading, always feeling as if the author had a minimum number of pages to hit. The respect and care with which Nickson treats Melissa's gay lifestyle deserves comment, and his approach is sympathetic and supportive, but aside from one really beautiful photo of Julie Cypher, there was no reason to purchase this book if you are a fan and have read the interviews Melissa has given to the press. For a biography which includes never released information and photos and interviews with intimates of the subject, you might want to read Joyce Luck's "Our Little Secret", just released also. Search above with Melissa Etheridge as Subject and Joyce Luck as Author for info on this book... ... Read more
