Product Description
Entertainers Roy and Dale Evans Rogers were thrilled when their little daughter Robin was born. But their excitement turned to concern when they were informed that Robin was born with Down's Syndrome and advised to "put her away." The Rogers ignored such talk and instead kept Robin, and she graced their home for two and a half years. Though Robin's time on earth was short, she changed her parents' lives and even made life better for other children born with special needs in the years to come. Angel Unaware is Robin's account of her life as she looks down from heaven. As she speaks to God about the mission of love she just completed on earth, the reader sees how she brought her parents closer to God and encouraged them to help other children in need. This book, which changed the way America treated children with special needs, is now available to a new generation. It is the perfect gift for parents of special needs children, parents grieving the death of a child, or anyone whose life has been touched by a special child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Book
I first read this book more than fifty years ago, when I was twelve.[I belive it was first published in 1952 or 1953.]Many of my friends read it as well.I don't know of anyone who took longer than a hour to read the book.I don't know of a single friend, boy or girl, who didn't cry.I don't know of a single person who has ever forgotten this book.

My children all read the book, and, yes, they took less than an hour to read it, they all cried, and they've never forgotten it.

Now, my granddaughter is twelve, and I'm hoping the 'tradition' will continue in this new generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for parents who have lost special needs children.
I was given a copy of this book after my son passed away at the tender age of 3 years, 9 months and 3 days old. This book expressed how I felt about my son's life in a way that could only be expressed by another parent who had loved and lost a special needs child. If you have a special needs child, I urge you to read this book.

I am very displeased with the way that Motor City responded.I did receive a response very soon saying that this book would be shipped soon and that I would receive an email from them as to when it was shipped. Two weeks went by and I sent them an email asking them if they still had the book.Another week went by and I finally received it with no response from them.I will never order from them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring Read and Quality Ministry Resource!
This book was given to me as a gift.As the parent of a child with special needs, I found its words to be both thought-provoking and comforting.I plan to purchase several to give to other parents with children with special needs. In my opinion, the author's words were inspired by the heart of God. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Time capsule for a generation
I loved this little book. Not a Hollywood whitewash, but a real story of two people whose love of family and faith shined for a whole generation because of their earnest values and huge hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best biographies about Roy Rogers & Dale Evans!
Chris Enss's, The Cowboy and the Senorita: A Biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans is one of the most heart-warming and well written biographies about the "King of the Cowboys" and the "Queen of the West." The personal stories of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are very well crafted, and the author is able to capture the essence and soul of these two wonderful people. Ms. Enss is articulate, animated, and amazing when she read excerpts from her book at a Barnes & Noble store. Fans of her wonderful book should really meet the author in person. I truly hope an audio version of this book gets produced soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Book about Two Truly Wonderful People
who enriched our lives over five decades.

Cheryl Rogers Barnett has truly written a memoir full of Love, Respect, and Admiration for her late parents, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. She writes of the people they were, before she was born, the circumstances of her adoption - yes, Cheryl was adopted by Roy and his first wife - and growing up in the Rogers-Evans* (Roy's first wife died while Cheryl was still a young pre-adolescent child, Dale lovingly took her on as her own) household.Roy, bless his soul, was in many ways, a real cowboy who eschewed the Hollywood lifestyle and could live in the great outdoors - in fact one of their early homes out at Lake Hughes was in a wooded setting - with rattlesnakes! Knowing that this wouldn't work, Roy moved in closer to Los Angeles, but always made sure that his children were grounded and did not have airs about them.

Barnett writes about her growing-up in the Rogers-Evans household, and in reading it one kind of wishes that too were put of a family that truly lived by the Cowboy Code. Roy and Dale were among the kindest folks one could ever meet, and I sure wish I did. Both Roy and Dale were unfailing kind and considerate to most people they met. It speaks volumes that in the one instance Roy ever got angry at fans was when they chose to want to visit him on the day they were burying Cheryl's little sister, Robin, and only AFTER these uncouth and rude people insisted in visiting him, having no consideration for the grief of the family.

She writes of the wonder horse Trigger, of how George "Gabby" Hayes was as different in real life as he was in the movies. Gabby, bless him, was a trained Shakespearian actor who was more accustomed to wearing tweed suits than a bandana and chaps - still, he too made the roles his very own. There are the Hollywood stories and vignettes of growing up knowing John Wayne and so many other Western heroes and other television and movie celebs, written straightforward, (the reader will never have the feeling that this book is a gossipy read) of Nudie the Famous Rodeo Tailor whom Roy helped to get established in Hollywood, and finally of the last decades when Roy and Dale, seeing how different Hollywood had become (mid-1960s), chose to move out to Apple Valley, and live out their lives there.

Throughout it all, Roy and Dale always gave deep love to the people they knew, and encouraged their children to be the best and fine folks in their own right(after learning she was adopted, Cheryl underwent a quest to learn about her real parents, with Roy and Dale supporting her every way). With the happiness there were the tragedies, first Robin, then the young son who died serving in the U.S. Army, and the adopted daughter from Korea, killed in a senseless road accident. Throughout it all, Roy and Dale's faith in God was never unwavering and was always solid. They lived the true meaning of the Cowboy and Cowgirl Codes.*

*(on their very last record together, Roy, Dale and son Dusty recorded a song written by two great friends of mine, Chris Hillman and Steve Hill entitled: "God's Plan" ...that pretty well sums up the honest and rich meaning of the lives they lived.

A warm memoir of a time when the tinsel Cowboys were so very much real - and real people too, unlike the sad imitation that Hollywood has become these days. Thank you, Cheryl Rogers-Barnett for a heartwarming read, and for signing my Roy Rogers-Dale Evans lunchpail in Wickenburg, Arizona last April.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Princess
I loved this book! I became a little girl again with eyes wide open in awe of my heroes - Roy and Dale. Cheryl is very honest about the fun, the hectic schedules, the grief over the loss of her siblings, her rebellious nature in an innocent way, the strengths and weaknesses of her well-known parents who raised their family well, loved them dearly, lived a honorable life and had a lot of adventures in the way. Where the fans viewed Roy and Dale as super heroes ... Cheryl presents them as parents. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for fans of Roy Rogers
Cowboy Princess: Life With My Parents Roy Rogers And Dale Evans is Cheryl Rogers-Barnett's true story of growing up as the daughter of "the King of Cowboys" and "the Queen of the West", whose popular exploits on movies and TV captivated the nation. Joy, the gruelling demands of the entertainment industry, the terrible loss of three siblings, and the lively personalities of those who shared their lives with Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, and Cheryl Rogers-Barnett fill this highly readable and personal account. Highly recommended for fans of Roy Rogers and the western movies of yesteryear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dearest Debbie - A sad book from a woman with great hope.
I read this book as a teenager. When Dale Evans died recently, it reminded me of this book, and another that she wrote, Angel Unaware (about her handicapped daughter Robin). These books, although both so very sad, show the tremendous faith that Ms. Evans and Mr. Roy Rogers shared through their trying family life. They suffered the heartache of losing three of their children at early ages (2, 12 and 18) but show how faith in God and the support of their millions of fans got them through.I can't think of better inspirations to share with my teenagers. This book shows that being a star, and being famous, doesn't always mean happiness, but having a strong faith is what really counts. ... This is a very interesting book.As a pictorial you not only can read their back grounds but can also see some great pictures as well.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Roy and Dale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Trails, pictoral celebration,Roy Rogers & Dale Evans
A beautiful book for any fan. It has pictures that show the lives of Roy,Dale and family off stage and we can truly get a glimpse how genuine they were. Like Dusty Rogers said, "they were ordinary people living extraordinary lives". They were, and still are good examples. Their best example and inspiration are the lives they lived in family, and selfless service to others. They endured trials and heartache like all of us and learned to trust in God and family. This book is like a family photo album we have the pleasure to view for ourselves. I recommend this as a wonderful gift for any fan, or as a piece of bygone days when America had real heroes on the silver screen, who were heroes in real life as well.

Product Description
For more than sixty years, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans personified the romantic, mythic West that America cherished well into the modern age. Blazing a trail through every branch of the entertainment industry—radio, film, recordings, television, and even comic books—the couple capitalized on their attractive personas and appealed to the nation's belief in family values, an independent spirit, community.
King of the Cowboys, Queen of the West presents these two celebrities in the most comprehensive and inclusive account to date. Part narrative, part reference, this impeccably researched, highly accessible survey spans the entire scope of Rogers's and Evans's careers, illuminating and celebrating their place in twentieth-century American popular culture. Following the pair through each stage of their professional and personal trajectories, author Raymond E. White explores the unique alchemy of the singing cowboy and his free-spirited yet feminine partner. In a dual biography, he shows how Rogers and Evans carefully husbanded their public image and—of particular note—incorporated their Christian faith into their performances. And in a series of exhaustive appendixes, he documents their contributions to each medium they worked in. Testifying to both the breadth and the longevity of their careers, the book includes radio logs, discographies, filmographies, and comicographies that will delight historians and collectors alike. THIS BOOK IS OK NOT AS GOOD AS THE COWBOY AND THE SENORITA. I WANT A BIO ON ROY ONLY. HE IS AMERICAN MUSIC AND MOVIES, RADIO AND TV AS WELL AS THE SONS OF PIONEERS. HE IS AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT HISTORYONLY ECLIPSED BY CROSBY AND AUTRY. I LOVE HIS STORY WITH EVANS THEY HAD A GREAT MARRIAGE AND LOVE. BUT A GRAT BIO WRITER HAS TO DO ROY ONLY.

TRUE FACTS- DONT LISTEN TO DUMMY DUSTY WHO GIVES FALSE INFO. TRIGGER WAS HALF QUATER HORSE AND HALF THOROUGHBRED! ALSO TRIGGER WAS NOT THE FATHER OF TRIGGER JR. AND IN FACT HAD NO BLOOD TIES TO HIM AT ALL. THAT WAS CALLED HOLLYWOOD PR DUSTY!

THIS BOOK IS OK HAS LESS MISINFO THAN THE COWBOY AND THE SENORITA BECAUSE THEY USED DOPEY DUSTY AS THEIR MAINE SOURCE.

5-0 out of 5 stars America's most celebrated personifications of the American West mythos in popular culture and entertainment
Professor Raymond E. White, author of numerous published articles concerning Roy Rogers and cowboys in film, presents King of the Cowboys, Queen of the West, an in-depth biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, two of twentieth-century America's most celebrated personifications of the American West mythos in popular culture and entertainment. King of the Cowboys, Queen of the West naturally focuses on both actors' careers in film, recordings, television, and even comic books, but also covers their meticulous maintenance of their public image and how their Christian faith was incorporated into their performances. Vintage black-and-white photographs intersperse this solid and highly readable reference for fans and media scholars alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding biography and reference on these two popular culture figures
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans' fans and students of popular culture will appreciate especially the voluminous and what must be virtually definitive references and documentation on the more than sixty-year career of the cowboy couple. Although some of the material goes back to before they met and became married. The eleven appendices begin on page 117 and run through the start of the notes on page 485. In addition to the filmography and discography of each noted in the review's heading, the appendices contain material on each's radio and television appearances, song compositions, appearances in comic books, inspirational books by either one or both (many written with a coauthor), and a "log" of more than 275 "A Date with Dale" radio programs between 1984 and 2000 noting location, topic, song, and guest; these were 30-minute "spiritual talk shows" hosted by Dale Evans. The biography preceding the appendices goes over the success of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in the different areas of popular entertainment while also devoting chapters on them as symbols of the mythic American West while being at the same time exemplars of the wholesome family life which was a prime social ideal in the post-WWII years from the late 1940s to the early '60s when they were at the height of their popularity. ... This book was misrepresented in the its sale description and picture. The cover was torn and ripped and the book was in poor condition. No where in the ad was it stated that this was a used library book and it had library stamps in it and sign out cards and sleeves still in it. I was very disappointed with the quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touched my life in a very special way....
I received this book for my 10th birthday from my parents, many years ago.At the time, I was very impressionable and this book made a significant impact on my life.I learned then that what we as fallible humans consider to be "imperfect" according to our standards of ignorance and bias is usually the most precious of all things to God.

Now, I have a two-year-old son with Down Syndrome and I can relate in so many ways to this book.As I look back over my life and various correlating events that have taken place, I see that God was preparing me to be the mother of a special needs child all along. And it all started with this one little book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Angel Unawares (God's Undercover Angels)
The author is Dale Evans Rogers. It about her "little Angel" that God sent to earth to teach everyone about Down Syndrome children. The story is told as if the Angel were sitting on God's lap telling God her experinces of her visit to the Roy Rogers family on earth.Through the many years I have purchased a lot of copies and gave them to people who had a Down Syndrome child or those who for whatever reason have condemed these beautiful children called "Angel Unawares". The book carries a powerful PUNCH for all people.

5-0 out of 5 stars .." Many Happy Trails"...sunset in El Dorado...
A precursor of sound bites, Frances Octavia, (born Oct 31,1912 in TX)changed her name to "Evans" because it sounded more euphonious...easier for announcers use on radio. "Queen of the West" wrote more than dozen books, including "Angel Unaware"..on their daughter,Robin, who died of Down Syndrome, in '52. She joins & now rides, on "Buttermilk", with Roy,& Trigger...over the Rainbow..in the great Western Sky. Let us all recall: "Don't Fence Me In". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming early biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans
This is a fine early biography of Western stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. It describes each one's personal and professional struggles, (Roy as a cowboy actor of growing popularity who maintains a close family life; Dale as a divorced teenage single mom who rises through the show business ranks as a singer and actress). Once they appear together in the movie, "The Cowboy and the Senorita", Roy and Dale have real chemistry together, and become a team. And later, when Roy, a widower with young children, asks single mother Dale to marry him, she accepts.

Problems occur when Roy's small children refuse to accept Dale as their new mother. Dale's grown son Tom --who has happily accepted Roy as his new dad-- attempts to resolve the situation by encouraging Dale to take the young children to church and Sunday School. Tom has found it helpful in his own life, and has the same hopes for his mother's situation. When Dale starts bringing the children to church, their lives begin to turn around. And not long afterward, when Roy and Dale's daughter, Robin, is born with Down syndrome, this faith becomes the light which sees them through their difficulties.

I loved this book. There are many wonderfully detailed vignettes of Roy and Dale's professional and personal lives: their wedding; their family life; their many friends; their show tours: the writing of Dale's book about Robin, "Angel Unaware", and the blessings that this book gave to other people; their compassionate visits to sick and crippled children; and their integrity which extended even to the products associated with their names, (Roy refused to have his name on any shoddy or dangerous products). And, above all, there is the legacy of their Christian witness: Roy and Dale not only read their Bible, they lived by its teachings. They really were good guys. ... Read more
