5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Track Book of All Time
The Last Protest: Lee Evans in Mexico City is the best running-related book I have ever read.Frank Murphy does a masterful job weaving running, race relations, and olympic politics into a seamless narrative.I recommend this book to anyone interested in running, track and field, civil rights, race relations, or 1960s America.Just a truly fabulous book by a gifted author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A page turner about track and field?Even better. A page turner about one man's trials and triumph
Circle a track once. Fast as you can. Faster than anyone. Do that as your country asks'What are you?' 'Who are you with?'
If the 400 meter run is magic, Frank Murphy is a magician of a writer. He tells the story of Lee Evans, a quarter miler running for the U.S. at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The Olympics where raised fists caused fits. Heroes and villians stride through Murphy's story, but better still, there are people captured in time, making choices without certainty as to their impact, only as to the justness of their cause.
For those who lived in that era, The Last Protest is a fresh look at men America asked to bring home gold medals, display them when asked, but not ask too much for themselves.
For those who only remember seeing a photo of two men, gloved hands clenched above them, the book is a way to understand them by understanding one man that circled that track.
The race sequences alone are worth the price of the book. Murphy writes with a novelist's voice, drawing you along with Evans as he runs through the duties he accepts and the distractions he endures. He places those battles in the context of this era "There was a time when a black man driving from one end of a southern state to the other, Alabama for example or Louisiana, would pack a lunch and carry his drink in a thermos."
This is history writ well.

Great jazzy flavor, with some challenging passages along with easier sections to riff on.A very good mix that'll keep you interested. Not a beginner's book - a good thing, since many Christmas jazz books are a bit on the easy side.Great for the intermediate player.

Product Description
Walker Evans' radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Walker Evans & Company focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 30s, and includes works in photography and other mediums that influenced Evans or were influenced by him, or which resonate in a significant way with aspects of his imagery, sensibility, and style. Among the other artists whose work is featured are: Eugene Atget, Mathew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, August Sander, Andy Warhol, and Edward Weston. Published in conjunction with the second of three cycles of millennial exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Featuing: Walker Evans, Eugène Atget, Bernice Abbott, Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Harry Callahan, William Eggelston, David Goldblatt, Russell Lee, Wright Morris, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Struth, Paul Strand, August Sander, Matthew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Edward Weston amongst many others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo Fine Art

Peter Galassi focuses on Evans as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century who also had a huge influence on many American photographers (and some contemporary graphic artists) and the ten visual chapters in this beautiful book provide a convincing case.

Photography as an art form has had a hard time proving it.Unlike fine art paintings, which exist as an entity, photography has mainly presented a visual record in many printed mediums (newspapers, magazines, advertising, packaging, posters) all seen by the public but not as art.Walker Evans helped to change that perception in America.

The first two chapters are interesting because Galassi features photographers who influenced Evans, especially Eugene Atget and his studies of Paris. The remaining eight each start with work by Evans then the chapter theme is carried on by other well-known photographers (and artists) who drew inspiration from the style and subject matter in his work. The hundred creative folk featured are a who's who of American photography since the 1940s.

Just over three hundred images are shown printed in an impressively fine screen (more than 250dpi) that brings out the wonderful detail in so many of them.Galassi contributes a fine introduction and each photographer get a comprehensive list of their photos in the back of the book.Overall I thought this was a fascinating survey American art photography whose origins clearly owe so much to Walker Evans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Tale That Hits Close to Home
This is a must read book for anyone just starting out or trying to grow their careers in the tech industry...I couldn't put it down!

The story is very insightful in to the inner motivations, personalities, and common base behaviors of many executives you are likely to encounter in the tech business, even today.

Mercs illustrates in vivid detail how the actions of a few can tank seemingly great companies and destroy their value potential.

"The Chopping Block" should be required reading in MBA programs. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Read!
Mr. Mercs has nailed the narcissism of professional ladder-climbers which exists in our business culture. He balances this with inspiring insights of our protagonist. It is a compelling read, reminiscent of some corporate clowns I used to work with on a daily basis.Pick it up--you won't be able to put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Having worked at a VC-backed software company for the last 4 years, this book hit home for me.One of my favorite lines was this:

"Managers are supposed to pave the way for an uninterrupted work environment. If you don't talk to people you will never know what they are thinking, never know what they are missing, or never know what they need to be more productive. If you don't talk to customers you can never really understand what they want.Oh sure, there is marketing, but marketing without customer interaction is call masturbation"

I also enjoyed this line:

"When management doesn't know how to run a company, make a profit, or fix a company's bottom line through innovative ideas, they start to cut spending and personnel. The problem with these poor management decisions is not having enough resources to create critical mass to pull out of a death spiral"

Although this is a novel with a strong narrative and good characters, it also may be one of the best business books that I have read in a long time.Kudos to James Mercs for producing a great read right out of the gate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your knickers!
If you thought corporate America was cold and heartless, this book will solidify your speculations! An intriguing account of how people clamber over each other to get to the top of the proverbial ladder, and when the mighty fall - they fall pretty hard.A compelling and quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
I thought it only appropriate that I begin reading "The Chopping Block" while on a transcontinental business trip, since I had been told it was a fast-paced, reality-based tale of business intrigue. I wasn't disappointed. Compelling from the beginning, the book picks up steam as the story unfolds and at about the mid-point, I couldn't put it down--I needed to see what happened to Bennett and his cronies next. Well written, superbly paced and exceptionally detailed, I'd recommend "The Chopping Block" to anyone interested in seeing business from a perspective few get to experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A reason for Christman comes alive again a treasured story...
This is a Christmas story. It's not about what you can get. It's a wild ride for two paternal twins, Kat and Dan, who need to get a new take on Christmas giving.

From the Book:Dan jumped from his bed and threw on his jeans and turtleneck. He had a strange feeling that he awoke just in the nick of time to keep a rendezvous with the helicopter blades he heard rushing toward him outside his window. He ran hopping on one foot to the window pulling on his sneakers.
"It can't be here!"
It was.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Standard in the best possible way
The important thing here is the "Lee Evans arranges" bit.

The arrangements *are* easy, there are no tenths in the left hand or lightning fast runs in the right and they fit the hand nicely.

The harmonies are not extreme, they are simple but not "simplistic". In other words everything is standard but carefully harmonized for maximum effect with minimum notes.

Here's an example from Nightingale sang in Berkerly Square: the cadence of the title phrase: bars 9 and 10:

1Maj7 V1 11 1V-V7 1

(followed by a single bar of sort of AMaj-BMaj-Ab-Bb magic that links back to the start of the theme (in Eb) - all done with single notes in the base and single or double notes in the RH)

Then it takes off with "classic-melodic-standard" Lee Evans development that any professional would be glad to play in a cocktail bar (meant in a good sense - I like this sort of thing) before finally returning to the last cadence in from 5th bar from the end but this time he *varies* the left hand to this:-

RH (same as above)

LH

bar (end - 5) all quater notes in block chords
G,Ab,G,Gb
Bb,B#,C,Gb

next bar first two beats 8th notes, last beat 8th notes (Bb is last note)
C,G#,F#,Eb,D,Eb
F,,,,,,Bb

next (last three) bar(s)
Eb arpeggio etc to end.

Pure Magic.
