Product Description
We live in a society where passions are rider less horses, uncontrolled and uncontrollable, in which there is a desolation of decency, in which love has become a jungle emotion, lust exalted to lordship, sin elevated to sovereignty, Satan adored as a saint, and man magnified above his Maker. Americans have come to dwell in an Alice in Wonderland world of fantasy, of self-delusion. Everything has been turned upside down and inside out in our America. Right is wrong and wrong is right. Good is bad and bad is good. Normal is abnormal, and abnormal is normal, true is false and false is true. We are fast degenerating into a decadent culture obsessed with selfishness and sin, death and destruction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow~!
When you read and play the chords described throughout this beautiful, spiral bound (!) book, a world of expressive and gorgeous chords will be heard. Incredible harmonic and jazzy sounds that are easy to play are covered. These are the meat and potatoes of all fake (improvisation) books. This is how those musicians create such wonderful expressive chords and tones in gigs. Everything is clearly written, absolutely clearly illustrated, and comprehensive in description. I am amazed that for under $12. I found such a music book treasure. Go ahead, become a much better piano/keyboard player with this easy to afford and learn book. Amaze yourself! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Numerous printing errors in the chord changes
The vast majority of the pieces in this book have extensive and serious errors in the chord changes. Most jazz players refer to the chord changes, so be forewarned. Flat signs are missing everywhere in the chord changes - in the chord root and alterations. There are no errors in the music notes on the staff, which is how you can verify which changes are wrong.Only 5 pieces in this book are accurate.I brought this problem to the attention of Hal Leonard, after having spent over an hour detailing examples of the pieces, measures, errors.Shockingly, they told me that I didn't understand the use of "accidentals" and that I needed to study music theory.I fell off my chair laughing!
Here's the reply from Hal Leonard Customer Service:We think that you are missing a key point of music notation: any accidentals that appear in the key signature are not re-printed throughout the music. We would suggest that you begin studying music theory.Hal Leonard publishes titles designed to help you in this endeavor....
So if you buy this book, enjoy the printed music, but plan to correct the changes in all except 5 of the pieces in this book if you want to play the changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Ellington in very playable arrangements
Maybe the previous reviewer is a more advanced pianist than I, but I found these arrangements to be irresistable. They have all the intricate harmonies Ellington was famous for, and are just plain fun to play. They are of medium difficulty, but sound great. My favorite "Take the A Train" really swings! I performed several of these numbers at a party and they were very well received. On a few numbers (Satin Doll, for example), by simply playing the bass part an octave lower(or in octaves), the sound was much richer and more satisfying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Duke Ellington: 26 arrangements for piano solo
This collection includes some of the best Ellington tunes. Level of (piano) difficulty is medium; no lyrics and no chord names are included. Arrangements are "nice" considering Ellington's complex harmonies: they give you the flavor of the band/piano arrangements, but they are in NO WAY near the level of Ellington's playing in terms of complexity and interest. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite books
There should be more than five stars for books like this one. All the reviewers who wrote about how poetic yet concrete, magical yet real this account of boyhood in the Cotswolds have said it much better than I can.It is pure magic. I wish it was 20 times as long. You might also find this book under the title "The Edge of Day".If you loved "Cider With Rosie" you might also enjoy "Lark Rise to Candleford", "The Golden Evenings of Summer" and the movie "A Christmas Story".

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful piece of work.
A book to read & re-read. Finely crafted & evocative of a now long ago & far away time and place.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hills are Dying with the Sound of Lee
I happen to live in the Cotswolds, the setting for this beautiful book, this Monet of literature. And, complying with the below reviews, I have to say that Stroud has become a concrete river, choked with litter, sidelinedwith Burger Stars, neon lights; a MacDonalds is in the blue print stages.Hills are lined with new developments. It's like, and I quote my mother,"A disease is spreading."

Yet there are places untouched byAmericanisms, consumerism, electricity (and here I apologise, as thisbecomes less of a review, more an account of personal experience). Butthere are still rivers afloat with leaves, valleys deep that welcomesunsets. They frost the sky in winter, burn it by summer.

"There'sbeauty in decay," as someone said. Haven't got a clue who. But thereyou go. Although dying of shallow needs and commercial interests, snippetsof the old way can be found. And in all their glory, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars On my Top Ten List.
This book was required reading during my childhood and, of course, I couldn't have dragged myself more slowly through it. How wise we become with age. This is an astonishing book. Lee is such a master of descriptionthat, after only a few pages, you slowly start to smell the fresh countryair and hear the languid sounds of summer as you are inescabably drawn intothe worldof his childhood - a world that you realize has already fadedinto the mists of history. But this special time has not been lost - it hasbeen captured forever in this irreplacable series of pictures. The peoplein these stories become more real than seems possiblewith only pen andink: his characterizations are as clever as anything by Dickens orDostoevski, and he catches the very essence of the sights, sounds andpeople around him with a charm unmatched by any other English writer. Butthis is not a story-book universe: thepeople in his young life have allthe frailty, vanity, delight and tragedy that you would expect in any smallcommunity - but what other has been crystallized with such talent andwisdom. A wonderful work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rooted in the fertile English Cotswolds of the 1920's
Rooted in the earth and shining with long gone summers and freezing winters this is a beautiful and poignant flower of a book. Written in a sensuous and lyrical poetic prose it tells the story of the authors'sboyhood in the Cotswolds of the West of England. Spinning round the greatorb of his clutter-minded and loving mother are his sisters and widervillage life. There is Illness, murder, private sorrow, boiling summer andfrozen winter and finally the running down of the feudal clock as longawaited change comes to the valley.A book, more even - a place to bevisited again and again... ... Product Description
British author Geoff Dyer once surmised that Edward Hopper "could claim to be the most influential American photographer of the twentieth century- even though he didn't take any photographs." What we see in Hopper's paintings when we look at them through the lens of photography, and how, in turn, the language of photography was influenced by Hopper's work, are the twin subjects of Edward Hopper & Company. Thoughtfully curated and edited by the respected San Francisco gallerist Jeffrey Fraenkel, seven paintings and three drawings by Hopper are here thematically interlaced with carefully selected photographs by eight of the masters of twentieth-century photography: Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander and Stephen Shore. As Fraenkel writes in his introduction,"More than almost any American artist, Hopper has had a pervasive impact on the way we see the world-so pervasive as to be almost invisible. The photographs that follow are potent evidence of his legacy, each a revelation of how one mediummight point to unimagined new possibilities for another." In his intimate essay for this volume, photographer Robert Adams identifies the singularity of Hopper's influence when he writes that it was Hopper who enabled his artistic realization "One did not need to be ashamed of having a heart." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Connections
Too often photographers and photography viewers forget the links between photography and the other arts.Keeping these links in mind might lead to better vision and better understanding and appreciation of images.

"Edward Hopper & Company" is just the book to make and reinforce those links.Originally prepared as a catalogue of a show at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco, the book consists of several paintings and drawings by Edward Hopper, a giant of twentieth century representational painting, and a collection of photographs by Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Harry Callahan, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander and Stephen Shore, all giants in the pantheon of photography. The book shows the connections between Hopper's form and content and that of the photographers.

The written commentary in the book is negligible and that is appropriate, because the pictures in the book speak so clearly that further explanation would be redundant.Consider the first picture in the book, which depicts a store window in Duluth.Unless one knew every picture in Hopper's oeuvre and none of the work of Stephen Shore, one would be sure this was a Hopper painting, until one looked at the small label describing the photograph. This similarity to Hopper's work in both form and content is obvious in every image in the book.

There is certainly food for thought here.Did the photographers see Hopper's work and try to copy it?Or was there something in the air that simultaneously developed the same vision in the painter and the photographers, like the similar work on evolution by Matthew, Wallace and Darwin.

Although one can discuss the similarity of subject matter, I would propose that the photographers were as concerned with the palpability of light as Hopper, to a greater or lesser degree.(Interestingly, and probably apocryphally, when Hopper was asked how he had developed his use of light he answered "I just paint what I see."How wonderful to be able to see that way!).

What other opportunities are there for photographiles to learn from other artists?Almost immediately I think of Gericault's use of color and handling of skies but the list of artists keeps growing as quickly as my mind can work. And what of the possibilities of learning from the non-visual arts. What does Mahler have to teach us about repetition and counterpoint?Aside from the wonderful images in this book, it should stir us to develop our artistic sensibilities from all the arts.

As to the book itself, the paintings and photographs are well reproduced, and would be a pleasure to view, even without the theme. Each image appears alone on the right side of the spread with a small caption on the left so that there are no distractions from the viewed image.

Altogether, this is a remarkable book for those interested in the arts, photographic or otherwise.

Product Description
Why the Bubble Burst provides a comprehensive look at the most dramatic run-up in equity values in US history. Lawrance Evans takes the reader from theory to empirics, illustrating why we need to go beyond the efficient markets hypothesis and the theory of domestic irrational exuberance to fully unpack the unprecedented phenomenon, why the market was destined for a major decline and why the fallout will be severe and protracted.

Quantitative evidence suggests that mutual funds, international portfolio flows, and the decline in the amount of corporate equity outstanding all played an integral role in the stock market boom. These ingredients in the context of a supply and demand-based theory of equity price determination indicate that supply and demand forces unrelated to corporate profitability elevated US equity valuations to unsustainable levels.

The author’s conclusions carry implications for economic theory and policy, retirement security and stock market investments in general. Economists, finance professionals and policymakers will find this volume a unique investigation into the stock market boom and bust. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Christmas book
I've had this well-worn book for over 20 years. The arrangements are tasteful, beautiful, and sometimes humorous.Love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, just a little cheesy...
Some really fantastic arrangements in here... and some seem a bit tongue-in-cheek. Either way, isn't being cheesy half of the fun of Christmas? I give my full recommendation to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful jazzy renditions
My piano teacher introduced me to this book a good fifteen years ago, and I've been pulling it out at Christmastime ever since. The arrangements go through a variety of jazz styles, from the peppy Scott Joplin-esque "The Holly and the Ivy" to the understated syncopation of "O Christmas Tree," and I just love them. One of my all-time favorite piano books, and certainly better than most of the watered-down Christmas songbooks out there. ... Read more
