Product Description
"Chaos: From Simple Models to Complex Systems" aims to guide science and engineering students through chaos and nonlinear dynamics from classical examples to the most recent fields of research. The first part, intended for undergraduate and graduate students, is a gentle and self-contained introduction to the concepts and main tools for the characterization of deterministic chaotic systems, with emphasis to statistical approaches. The second part can be used as a reference by researchers as it focuses on more advanced topics including the characterization of chaos with tools of information theory and applications encompassing fluid and celestial mechanics, chemistry and biology. The book is novel in devoting attention to a few topics often overlooked in introductory textbooks and which are usually found only in advanced surveys such as: information and algorithmic complexity theory applied to chaos and generalization of Lyapunov exponents to account for spatiotemporal and non-infinitesimal perturbations. The selection of topics, numerous illustrations, exercises and proposals for computer experiments make the book ideal for both introductory and advanced courses. ... Read more

Product Description
Plant physiological research has a fundamental role in advancing our understanding of plants and their interactions with surrounding environments. As occurs with most tropical plant species, the gaps in our knowledge of the ecophysiology of tropical tree crops are incommensurable, though significant advances have occurred in recent years. This book highlights these recent advances, which could provide valuable information to manage crop plants for maximum productivity. Major tropical tree crops, considered here in a broader sense as including species such as banana, cassava, citrus, cocoa, coconut, coffee, mango, oil palm, papaya, rubber, and tea, are examined. For most of these crops, photosynthesis is treated as a central process affecting crop growth and performance. Crop physiological responses to environmental factors such as light and water availability and temperature are highlighted. The flowering control and fruit growth of crops such as citrus, coffee and mango are explored. In addition, several gaps in our database concerning the ecophysiology of tropical tree crops and areas for further research are indicated. ... Read more

Product Description
Are you still working in VB6? Do you feel like Wrox has forgotten about you? Well, we do care... and to make it up to you we've just released a VB6 book that tackles the practical issues that VB6 programmers are facing today.

In 2003, VB6 is still the most popular programming language. But the demands of programming have changed massively since its release. Now programmers need to contend with Web programming, XML, Web Services, and COM+ is more important than ever. For professional VB6 programmers, this book will help you push the limits of what VB6 can do... showing how to go beyond drag and drop GUI development, and get real power out of VB6.

As well as a 650-page book giving you up to date advice, tips, and guidance on VB6 programming, Professional VB6 comes with a CD containing five other VB books in electronic form, ten additional case studies from existing Wrox books, and code examples. The five books electronic books are:

Visual Basic 6 UML Design and Development
Professional Visual Basic 6 Web Programming

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Nice, But Not for Professionals...
This is a decent Wrox book. Not the jumble of pages stacked together that you get most of the time, but a well rounded compendium of nice to know things for the casual VB Developer. I say "casual", because when it comes to professional programming, you really shouldn't have to read (again) about doing some basic ADO stuff or creating an install package. Three stars for this book because it's good, but not written for a professional developer...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I saw the title of this book and picked it up - we are trying to build web services via SOAP at my company and we are not migrating to .NET for a while yet. The book proved worthy of it's title. This book covers modern implementations with legacy technology. Thank you to the authors. I suspect that there are quite a few companies out there that, like us, need to see VB6 references for a while yet (Microsoft has seemed to replace their VB6 documentation with VB.NET documentation on their site).

I recommend this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overall Reference to Using VB6 for Today's Development
Being a fan of the Wrox series, I was not disappointed with the latest Professional Visual Basic 6 book.Even though .NET technologies carry the current industry momentum (for MS-based development), there will always be a place for VB 6 within the Enterprise. In my case, for example, I will always have a need to use VB6 for certain clients who are either unwilling or slow to adapt to the newer technologies (namely, .NET) for any number of business reasons.

The authors of this book have done a very good job of bringing together some of today's hottest technologies under one cover.Experienced VB developers will find the chapters within a practical reference (if not a valuable introduction) to modern APIs, such as ADO, COM+, MSMQ, XML, and SOAP.In the short time that I've owned this, I have already pulled it off of the shelf to reference the text and examples on several occasions.

Having said that, though, there is only so much that can fit into any one book, so it does not serve as an absolute reference manual for any single technology.

The book comes with a CD that contains the usual source code from the book, plus 10 Case Studies and 5 Wrox titles in PDF format.Just a technical note, though: I couldn't open the PDF files using Acrobat Reader 4.05, but a simple upgrade to the latest free version resolved that problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for all VB 6 developers
This is a very thorough compendium of essential information for Visual Basic 6 developers. All of the authors are developers themselves and understand their subject matter thoroughly. You'll find a wide range of helpful information including SQL, COM+, XML, SOAP and much more. You'll even find step-by step information on how to deploy your Visual Basic applications using Visual Studio Installer and Wise Installation System.A great reference book that you'll pull off your shelf again and again... ... I enjoyed this book a great deal.It did have a fairytale quality and was very romantic.I would also like to add Fabio did not actually write this himself. He had the assistance of a ghost writer and I think "She" did a very good job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!!
This is one of the worst books I have ever read, and I've read lots of badand cheesy stuff.I thought TekWar was bad but William Shatner has nothingon Fabio! The writing is *atrocious*, the characters flat and cliche, theplot all but tacked on as an excuse to show off Fabio's "exquisitephysique."My friend sent me this book as a joke, and I'm sending itback to her! There is only one good thing about this book: if you're awriter, no matter how awful you think you are, this will make you feel likeShakespeare. My four year old writes better than this, and that's nothyperbole... I am serious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spicy and Romantic at the same time
This book had a wonderful, fairy-tale quality. The beginning of the story read a little slow, but the story picked up and proved to be a very charming tale. I enjoyed it. I'm a delicate reader and it's what I would consider a "safe read", which I very much appreciate. Fabio has picked himself up another reader!

Product Description
What you need to know

This book is for people who:

  • Have some experience of programming ASP.NET with Visual Basic(r) .NET
  • Are familiar with the operation of the .NET Framework
  • Want to learn how to use ASP.NET to make data-centric web applications

What you will learn from this book

For a web site to offer its users an experience that improves on that of newspapers or textbooks, it needs a way to change the information it contains dynamically - and that means it needs access to a data source. Through the combination of ASP.NET and ADO.NET, Microsoft provides everything you need to access, read from, and write to a database so that your web users can view and manipulate that data from a web browser. In this book, we'll show you how it's done.

Packed with clear explanations and hands-on examples, Beginning ASP.NET Databases Using VB.NET contains everything you'll need on your journey to becoming a confident, successful programmer of data-driven web sites. In particular, we'll look at:

  • Connecting to common data sources, including SQL Server(r) and MS Access
  • Reading data with data reader and dataset objects
  • Creating and deleting records, and editing data
  • Displaying data with ASP.NET's web server controls
  • Writing and using stored procedures from VB.NET code
  • Placing your data access code in reusable class libraries

The book closes with a real-world case study that consolidates the tutorials throughout the book into a practical result.

"This book is based on my experience teaching hundreds of developers over the last 12 years. In it, you'll find everything you need to begin using databases from your ASP.NET applications." —John Kauffman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good For Additional Practice
I've recently finished building all the examples in this book from scratch, using both EditPlus and VS.NET2K3 on my workstation, and storing and testing the apps on my Win2K3/SQL2K server. Once I got the security settings and connection strings figured out, I was able to get all the examples to run properly.

This book can provide good additional practice for beginners to ASP.NET, after you've been through an introductory book, like Wrox's "Beginning ASP.NET with VB.NET 2003" (ISBN 0764557076), or it's C#.NET 2K3 equivalent, ISBN 0764557084.

The book is OK as far as it goes, but you have to get all the way up to Chapter 11 before they show you an example of an object-oriented application that interacts with a relational database. And even then, they don't run through all the code in the book, they just give you the simplest files and tell you to download the rest of the example application from the web site.

One big hole in the book is that it really should have a chapter on setting up and testing connections to various databases under various server scenarios. It's just a personal opinion, but I've always felt that it's important to run a test app that tests the database connection and read/update functions before you start to build anything else.

Another drawback is that both the Beginning books, and this database book, have examples of ASP.NET server controls which don't quite render properly in any browser except Internet Explorer. Each of these books should have a section that discusses how to test in various browsers, and how to tweak the code so the pages will render properly in Firefox, Safari, etc.

One big advantage of this particular book, however, is that they don't rely on any server controls that are available only in the Web Matrix design environment and only seem to run in a Web Matrix server. This is one big flaw in the beginning books.

It's probably also important to note that no combination of the beginning books and/or this book will really get you quite up to the skill level you need to have in order to do real ASP.NET database application development. Once you're ready to start doing that, Wrox's "Professional ASP.NET 1.1" (ISBN 0764558900) is an excellent reference source. It's not a tutorial, but it's got pretty comprehensive coverage of most of the issues you'll need to know about. Go through one of the Beginning books, then do this book, then get the Pro book and you'll be ready to start developing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag
My guess is that the reviewers who gave this text five stars did not actually attempt to reproduce working versions of all the examples. The quality of this book is mixed, as is common for the multiple-author Wrox editions. Some of the chapters are exceptional, and deserve five stars, having clear and logical instruction as well as examples that work as described.Chapters 5 and 6 are examples of the best authoring, and it appears that the author with last name Ferracchiati has written some of the best chapters in the book.Other chapters are nightmarish excursions through incomplete and poorly explained code, with examples that don't work, and with files missing in the downloaded code.Examples of such chapters are 7, 9 and 10, with chapter 10 being so incredibly bad that it has permanently soured my outlook toward this text.To summarize - there is some useful information in the book, but don't pay more than a few dollars for it, and don't buy it if your own time is worth more than a few dollars per hour.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating Experience
I've been reading some of the other reviews on this page, and I can't believe they are reading the same book.I have had problems running the code in several of these exercises, particularly with any code that has the DataGrid control.I've also noticed I'm not the only with this problem, since I have browsed the Wrox website forums and found others who were having the same problems with the code.I even submitted code from Chapter 3, page 67 to Microsoft Support, after receiving nothing but a blank page when I ran it.Microsoft noticed that the code was MISSING a required clause! The exercise in question is the FIRST exercise in the book.If the first exercise you attempt fails even though you made no typos, it's frustrating.I can easily see a novice programmer getting discouraged and giving up.I'm an experienced ASP programmer and even I was getting fed up!

I've been a big fan of other books by Wrox, but this one leaves a lot to be desired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow
I have enough programming books that if weighed would weigh as much as a car.

I love this book.

The best part is that I can read it and follow the examples without having to sit at my computer.

The key word in the title is beginning. I have found it to be a great foundation book on its subject matter.

The authors should get an atta boy for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginers... Good reference
This was my first book on .NET and I think it was a great tool to help me learn the basics of database programming. After building on the basic concepts it goes on into deeper knowledge and real world examples. This book was the only resource I used to not only get started but to continue using as my desktop reference. The book has lots of examples and it's very detailed on the explanations. The authors have a clear and concise style that does not overwhelm the reader with extremely complex details. I recommend this book if you are a beginer on ASP.NET and I also think it serves as a good refenrece. ... Read more

Product Description

The 2nd edition of this sucessful book has several new features. The calibration discussion of the basic LIBOR market model has been enriched considerably, with an analysis of the impact of the swaptions interpolation technique and of the exogenous instantaneous correlation on the calibration outputs. A discussion of historical estimation of the instantaneous correlation matrix and of rank reduction has been added, and a LIBOR-model consistent swaption-volatility interpolation technique has been introduced.

The old sections devoted to the smile issue in the LIBOR market model have been enlarged into a new chapter. New sections on local-volatility dynamics, and on stochastic volatility models have been added, with a thorough treatment of the recently developed uncertain-volatility approach. Examples of calibrations to real market data are now considered.

The fast-growing interest for hybrid products has led to a new chapter. A special focus here is devoted to the pricing of convertible bonds and inflation-linked derivatives.

Since Credit Derivatives are increasingly fundamental, and since in the reduced-form modeling framework much of the technique involved is analogous to interest-rate modeling, Credit Derivatives -- mostly Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and CDS Options - are discussed, building on the basic short rate-models and market models introduced earlier for the default-free market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on interest rate models
This is the best book available on interest rate models. Very detailed. Much more focused and readable than Rebonato's book. More pragmatic and explicit than Musiela and Rutkowski. Not as theoretical as Hunt and Kennedy. James and Webber also looks very good, but I'm not that familiar with it. All other books have only bits and pieces on interest rates.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have read on the subject
With all the due respect to the other authors I would say that if one is interested in a good theoretical book whihc is also good on the implementation side then the book of Brigo and Mercurion is definetly the best book I have ever read on the subject.

Anyone interested in implementing the LMM/BGM/MSS model in practice is well advised to read it.

I would just say that this is certainly a must have in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars New stuff and nice overview: hard to beat!
In the late nineties I went through Brigo's innovative work on stochastic nonlinear filtering with differential geometry techniques. I was favorably impressed by results and style, particularly in his dissertation and in his 'geometry in present day science' very readable overview. Interesting results are found and nicely told with accurate -but not pointlessly complicated - advanced mathematics for the problems at hand, I reasoned.

I've followed a similar path from control to finance, and having worked with interest rate models, I couldn't help but order this Brigo-Mercurio book. I had high expectations 'cause these two guys are working in a bank on the real thing.

Sure enough I'm not disappointed.

1-factor models are handled with great care, a ton of formulas and recipes are given. I've never seen this kind of analysis of pricing with Gaussian 1-f models. The new upgrade of the CIR model is interesting and accurate. "CIR++" is now my favorite 1-f model. I like the treatment of lognormal 1-f models and the explanation of Monte Carlo and trees -- the flow-chart for Bermudan swaptions is crystal clear! Plots of market implied structures and volatility calibration are useful additions.

The chapter on 2-f extensions has one of the best discussions on volatility, and two tons of useful formulas/recipes. Two dimensional trees!

The HJM chapter size is OK. I agree - the useful models embedded in HJM are short rate models and market models.

Market models - these three chapters alone are worth the book. You'll find yourself nodding as you read the guided tour. They make it look easy all the time. The exposition is focused, clear, intuitive, detailed. There's also new stuff, just check the calibration discussion! Smile modeling begins with a brilliant tour and ends with Brigo-Mercurio's new approach - the mixing dynamics - deserving a whole chapter if expanded.

The detailed explanation on products is a much welcome original addition. Cross currency derivatives!

Quotes - as in Brigo's old work - are a pleasant diversion while reading. The 500 and more pages are a treat given the competitive price.

Still there's room for improvements - more "CIR2++"! Something on 3-f models. Historical estimation of the correlation matrix and low-rank optimized approximations. Expand smile modeling! More hedging. Something on structured products. Cross currency libor model. chapter 9 - other interest rate models - sounds out of place and can be suppressed for other things.

This book rings true and has useful teachings for students, academics and practitioners. Although it requires some background in stochastic calculus, it's hard to beat on the pricing front. Kudos to Brigo and Mercurio! It only harms there aren't enough books like this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely written overview of interest rate models
This recent book, written by two Italian "quants" Mercurio & Brigo, gives a nice and accessible overview of interest rate models which is a compromise between the practitioner viewpoint, expressed for ex. in Rebonato's book "Interet Rate option models"
and the theoretical viewpoint such as the one in Musiela & Rutkowski.
The authors, themselves PhDs in quantitative finance/ applied maths, wrote this book while working as quants in an Italian bank and this first hand contact with the market gave them a
practical view on the subject which markes this book very interesting.

The book contains a "rational" catalogue of models used in practice ( as opposed to models which are impossible to implement!).

In contrast with academic books on interest rate modeling which deal with HJM formulation, there is a lot of emphasis here on LIBOR and Swap market models
(BGM -Jamshidian models) which reflects the current market practice. This is a positive point since there are not many books with details on implementing and using these "market models".

Part II: Interest rate models in practice is particularly useful because it deals with implementation and calibration which, as any practitioner knows, are important and usually delicate issues.
However calibration issues are dealt with somewhat lightly, especially recent developments on modeling cap/swaption smiles
are not included here.

This book can also be used for a graduate level/PhD course on interest rate models.

There are a lot of numerical examples in the book and mathematics is kept to the necessary level while keeping the
approach both rigorous and understandable.

Overall, it is one of the best books written on the subject.
I highly recommend it to PhD students, quants and researchers interested in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and useful book
In my humble opinion, this is the best book on Interest Rate modeling out there. The writing style is clear and focused and the appendices are fantastic. The book is rigorous but someone with some background in Stochastic Calculus will find it easy to follow. If you need refresher, dont worry the authors have you covered, see the appendix on Stochastic Calculus. Not an introductory book.Very exciting book. ... Product Description

Drafting an international contract can be a risky business. Yet with the increasing globalization of markets, these cross-border contracts are becoming a common practice for most traders, as well as for the lawyers assisting them. At the same time, international contracts remain a difficult and mysterious subject for business people as well as their lawyers.

In his new book, Drafting and Negotiating International Commercial Contracts, Professor Fabio Bortolotti, a world-renowned expert on contract law, clarifies the issues surrounding these contracts and provides solutions to the thorny problems they raise:

  • choice of the applicable law
  • choice of jurisdiction
  • international arbitration
  • the use of more international drafting techniques
  • hardship, force majeure and liquidated damages

As an added feature, this volume provides insights into the basic requirements of a well-drafted contract and analyzes in depth the negotiating process. It concludes with incisive commentary on the model contracts developed by the International Chamber of Commerce.

Product Description
Any follower of the international tabloids is well-acquainted with rocker Pete Doherty, the former Libertines frontman who is now quite famous for his on-again, off-again love affairs with supermodel Kate Moss and crack cocaine. After getting kicked out of the influential aforementioned British post-punk band for his over-the-top-drug use, Doherty started the band Babyshambles in 2005. Despite his frequent stints in rehab and a jail sentence for burglarizing a bandmate's apartment, Babyshambles has put out two records, Down In Albion (2005) and Shotter's Nation (2007).
Though fringe elements of Doherty's incendiary story have been well documented by unauthorized paparazzi, the authorized, inside view has never been available until now. In I Won't Give Up, Italian photographer and documentary filmmaker Fabio Paleari, known for capturing one of the last interviews with Allen Ginsburg before his death in 1997, follows Doherty onstage, backstage, while partying from 2004-2006 and throughout the vicissitudes of his relationship with Moss. Over the course of his 30-year career, Paleari has created his own fair share of gossip with photographs of all kinds of illicit activity and glamorized sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. Here, above all, he captures the "off" moments, when Doherty is at his roughest and least inhibited. This unique photo portrait closes just months after the famous video of Kate Moss' cocaine relapse aired to the public in 2007. ... Read more

Who was Mother Shipton? Some people consider her the most famous prophet in the last 1000 years, after Nostradamus. Probably she is even the most famous prophetess in the world's history. While some think she really existed and was a soothsayer or maybe an astrologer who predicted facts (most of them regarding the 17th century or about our own future), others believe she is no more than a legend, that was slowly built over the centuries. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting storyline but....
the leading lady is rather bland. The leading man holds this book together, just waiting to see what he'll do and say & visualizing Fabio as the leading man.Again the plot is not typical (applaud) and I didn't predict the ending either, which was good. The love scenes in this book are very vanilla and in comparison to Pirate, this read was like a day in church.

Overall, it's good, but he's got some others that blow this away.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of Fabio's finest efforts.
This is one of Fabio's finest efforts. He totally captures the
feelings of suspense and wonder everyone feels in all new romances.
Fabio's characters are well developed and the plot follows classic
romantic suspense. .... All in all a
terrific book by Fabio and much better than you would think going in!

4-0 out of 5 stars To my surprise, I liked it
Though one of the wealthiest women in the world, Jorey Maddock finds life to be a bloody bore. She drifts from one fling to another. When her latest romance turns wearisome, Jorey deserts New York City, seeking serenity in the upstate Adirondacks town of Blizzard Bay.She has wonderful memories of teenage summers visiting her deceased grandfather there.

A new resident, Sawyer Howland has a strong feeling that someone needs his help.He has learned over the years not to ignore his visions and thus goes out in a blizzard.Herescues Jorey. Both are attracted to each other, but for different reasons both are frightened of the other. However, someone is killing Jorey's childhood friends, leaving her to wonder if the MYSTERIOUS Sawyer is the killer.

Super model and sometime author, Fabio has scribed a well-written romantic suspense that will elate his myriad of fans while pleasing readers of the sub-genre.The fast-paced story line moves forward and readers will feel Jorey and Sawyer's angst.Though most fans will be a bit disappointed with the ending, Fabio has written a romance novel that will be well received by more than just those readers who judge a book by its cover only.

Product Description

Due to the diverse diagnostic imaging techniques available (x-ray/CT, Magnetic Resonance, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasonography) radiologic examinations are made of an enormous amount of images, which means that the elements to be described and interpreted by the radiologist are sometimes exorbitant. Furthermore, the expectations of the population and the ones of the physicians requiring examinations are growing, so that besides patients, also so-called clients (i.e., supposed healthy people) flow into everyday clinical practice of a radiology department, based on disease prevention/screening programs.

Registration and interpretation/reporting modules of a computer-assisted radiologic reporting system were created to help the radiologist in his task. However, the radiologist is also expected to write a report with a diversified language, according to diagnostic technique(s), population type (client vs. patient; pediatric, adult, geriatric), pathology, and across all body areas.

The authors wish to suggest a shared methodology to uniform as much as possible the way of writing a radiologic report, how to most effectively communicate the results of an examination. The important role played by language also from a legal-forensic point of view is also considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'What's Happening' by Fabio Massimo
An intelligent and refreshing journey through a myriad of fascinating reflections of the mysteries of Life. These reflections and probing questions include a clear demonstration of the difference between the `hypothetical' world and the `real' world. We have all heard of `Cause and Effect' but interestingly the author has a brand new perspective on this long accepted theory - he shows that it is rather `Effect and Cause', which belongs to the real world and not the other way around!

The author discusses the inevitability of Predestination and the provocative aspect of the illusion of Free Will, the limits of considering Evolution to be the overall answer.Man is shown to be insignificant in the grand scheme in the overall Big Picture and how we are very limited by our incapacity to conceive more than our restricted 3D experience of the world. We are insignificant but important because only we have intellect and are able to see what all has been given to us.He explains how the future exists and is always in front of the present.Other fascinating topics including discussing Evolution and how this does not exclude Grand Design. He mentions Paganism and how today, as in the past, they follow man-made beliefs and rites. He examines the difference between `Truth' and `Religion'.The author moves on to the immensity and order in the galaxies and how astronomers are awestruck by the grandeur of the universe - the mind boggles if thoughts don't progress to the necessity of a Creator! The ludicrousness of considering that all this wonder just happened in chaos and not from awareness and design.

The author is obviously a deep thinking and well read man and probably has a well thumbed and earmarked bible. He is deeply convinced that Christ's sacrifice promised us eternal life.He shares that Bible prophecies detailed the coming of Christ 600 years before he arrived - how amazing is that!

He also discusses death, which is not dying but rather regeneration from the physical to a spiritual body.He is obviously well on his journey to Faith and keen to share his life lessons and wisdom gained from experience.A refreshing, thought provoking book which will certainly get you thinking!Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction...
As many C++ programmer, I have heard of XML and its supposed wonders, yet, I always thought it was just another web-specific kind of technology. I knew the basics, but was not really aware of how it could be integrated with C++.

This book was exactly what I was looking for. It just covers every possible way of integrating XML into C++ applications. This book is a wonderful survey of all possible solutions.

The fact that this book covers every possible technology is of course very appreciated, but its coverage of every technology is very brief and may only serve as an introduction.

Worse, the very comparison between every technology and the "when to use what?" section is of a mitigated quality. The author just doesn't explain well his point. The book looks more like a compilation of chapters than a unique book with a clear vision.

After reading this book, I fell like I know more how to integrate XML into C++ and dispose of some information on which technology use, but definitively need to buy another book to cover the chosen technology.

Overall, this book is a very good introduction to the integration of XML into C++ apps, but a better "guidance / technology comparison" would be appreciated.

2-0 out of 5 stars The only one on the subject, but far from being perfect
Although XML is a buzzword du jour, its acceptance in the C++ world
is surprisingly slow, especially in non-Microsoft environments. This
is mostly due to the lack of an accepted and standardized API. The
standardization process is painfully slow and even though there are
a number of publicly available parsers with C++ bindings, they vary in
their approach to XML processing as well as in the minute details that
make them work with some C++ compilers but not with the others.

In such an environment, a book devoted specifically to processing XML
using C++ is mostly welcome. Read below and decide for yourself.

The good:

- the book covers all major XML processing technologies
available for C++ programmers. It provides examples and explains the
difference in various approaches.

- It will not bore you with XML basic description, excessive quoting
of XML standards, or useless hype (99.9% of XML books out there are
plagued with all of the above).

The bad:

- Even though all of the technologies are compared, the comparison is
crammed in the back of the book, after the chapters describing all
of these technologies in great detail. This sounds like a poor
choice, because these technologies are very different from each
other and different tasks require different approaches. A good
overview and comparison of all of those in the beginning would be
much welcome. It would give readers an idea of what technology to
choose.

- Most of the large examples are Windows-oriented.

- Source code for the examples is only available on an attached CD.
It is not available on-line, which is a shame - I though we've
already passed the stage of "proprietary examples." Apart from other
obvious advantages, having examples on-line would facilitate
contribution of patches and improvements from the readers.

- Speaking of the examples on the CD, they are presented in the worst
manner I've ever seen. The examples I've played so far are bundled
with XML parser distribution (each of them!), have plenty of
temporary files around (like editor backups, or files that Visual
C++ produces). Even those examples that are supposed to work in both
UNIX and Windows come with no Makefiles, the source code looks and
feels rather immature (I though, one learns to NOT supply an
identifier to #endif directive during the 1st year of C/C++
education). All in all, each example I've seen so far feels like a
quick hack, hastily cooked up and released without a mere attempt to
make it look presentable. This is really bad, since, given the
scarcity of books on the subject, there will be plenty of people
fighting with the source code from the book.

The bottom-line: this books falls way short of my "golden standard"
(UNIX books by W. Richard Stevens). Nevertheless, it seems to be the
only book on the subject and it does cover all major technologies. If
you need to work with XML in C++ - buy this book. Once a revised
edition is out (or a better book appears), switch to it.

It will get out of date pretty quick as most tech books of this kind do but as a reference it does nicely.

Product Description

Are you ready for the future of data access in .NET?

At the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2005, Microsoft previewed a new technology, Language-Integrated Query (LINQ). It captured a lot of attention because it addressed the fundamental issue of merging object-oriented applications with relational data. The LINQ Project team demonstrated how to use LINQ to query a variety of data sources, such as a SQL Server database, an XML file, and an array, and how to manage the data using an object-oriented approach.

Fabio Ferracchiati has written a comprehensive guide to the three main parts of the LINQ May 2006 CTP: managing in-memory data (LINQ to Objects), accessing relational databases (LINQ to ADO .NET), and manipulating XML documents (LINQ to XML). Each chapter offers many practical examples that you can try yourself with the downloadable source code. Youll quickly learn everything you want and need to know about LINQ by actually using LINQ.

The future of.NET data access is already hereand its a very bright one!
