Product Description
A biography of the Saturday Night Live star as told by his friends and family

No one dominated a stage the way Chris Farley did. For him, comedy was not a routine; it was a way of life. He could not enter a room unnoticed or let a conversation go without making someone laugh. Fans knew Chris as Saturday Night Live’s sweaty, swaggering, motivational speaker; as the irresistible Chippendales stripper; and as Tommy Callahan, the underdog hero of Tommy Boy. His family knew him as sensitive and passionate, deeply religious, and devoted to bringing laughter into others’ lives.

But Chris did not know moderation, either in his boundless generosity toward friends or in the reckless abandon of his drug and alcohol abuse. For ten years, Chris cycled in and out of rehabilitation centers, constantly fighting his insecurities and his fears. Despite three hard-fought years of sobriety, addiction would ultimately take his life at the tragically young age of thirty-three. Fame on SNL and three straight number-one box office hits gave way to a string of embarrassing public appearances, followed by a fatal overdose in December 1997.

Here is Chris Farley as remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues—the true story of a man who lived to make us laugh and died as a result. The Chris Farley Show is an evocative and harrowing portrait of a family trapped by addiction, a father forced to bury a son, and a gifted and kindhearted man ultimately torn apart by the demons inside him.Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: You don't have to be a rabid Chris Farley fan to enjoy The Chris Farley Show, an honest, endearing oral biography about a truly funny, deeply troubled addict that is as likely to make you cry as it is to make you laugh out loud. Made up mostly of excerpts from intimate interviews with family, childhood friends, famous castmates, and writers, The Chris Farley Show is a vivid portrait of a performer, told plainly by the people who knew him best at every stage of his life. These hundred or so interviews piece together the complex back-story of a hugely talented, big-hearted guy who could make the funniest people in the business laugh with "just a look," but whose vulnerability and "puppy dog personality" charmed friends and family into letting him off the hook--preventing him from getting help when he needed it most. Funny and heart wrenching, The Chris Farley Show is a must-read for fans of Farley and of the people who loved him (including David Spade, Chris Rock, Tim Meadows), as well as anyone looking for a glimpse into life on the stage. --Daphne Durham ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but very sad book
If you're a Chris Farley fan and want to know the whole story, pick this book up.If youre expecting it to be filled with jokes its not. While its funny at times its very sad and moving and offers a lot of perspective on his personal life that you just won't get anywhere else.

It's not written like a standard biography, but is told through comments from many who knew him best including his family, friends, people who worked with him at Second City, and SNL alumni like Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, Lorne Michaels and David Spade.

The book shows Farleys good side in that he was incredably nice, volunteered often, was extremely humble, and cared but unfortunately while caring for others and trying to make others laugh he didn't always look out for himself.

The book is definately a page turner, you wont want to put it down but be forewarned its incredibly sad.Theres moments where you wish you could just grab Farley by the neck and slap him when he screwed up so often, just to let him know how many people truly cared about him and loved his work and him as a person.

Luckily the book doesn't just focus on his problems but it shows how truly big a heart he had and how much he cared for others including people he didnt know. For instance there was a lady on the street begging for change to get on a bus and he let her in his limo and gave her cash and told the limo driver "take her home".

If youre a Farley fan i can't reccomend this book enough, pick it up now, you wont be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful story of a simple man with a showbiz dream gone horribly wrong
Wow.As a huge fan of Chris Farley, I thought this biography was amazing. It's heartfelt, personal, and raw down to the bitter end, told by close school friends, priests, family members, and current celebrities that spent a lot of time with the man.It includes pages of photos that can't be found anywhere else.I was relatively young when I started watching Chris on SNL and in movies, but I never got caught up in his personal life, so all I saw in him was this hilarious, overweight guy on TV that seemed a lot like myself and I always regarded him as a seriously nice guy. This was, in fact, an understatement, as told by friends who were close to the guy in the book. The book is divided, as the subtitle discloses, into three acts of his life, or three transitions from a healthy yet confused young man into a full-blown Hollywood, junkie cliche.I would recommend the book to any fan of Farley or SNL, any fan of comedy and comedians, anyone going through addictive compulsions or anyone who knows someone with these problems, and anyone interested in getting involved in show-business.There are a lot of private moments disclosed in the book, as well as what individuals thought of him as time slipped away, and that makes this book the definitive story of his life, in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars read this book.
Stop what you're doing and add this to your to-read list. I picked this up in the airport and wasn't sure I was going to like it. Five hours later, I had finished it and I couldn't believe how good it was. This book is absolutely fascinating, touching, sad, and funny. Read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Telling
Very interesting biography of a very interesting soul.Chris Farley was a comic genius, a good soul and a loyal friend. But he was also an addict in every way.It was these addictions which extinguished his life much too early. This biography written in interview form covers his entire life.Mostly involving his brothers and friends, it does have excerpts from colleges like Tim Meadows, Norm MacDonald and David Spade as well as a smattering of other friends from his movies and SNL.Noticeably missing is anything from Adam Sandler.Though the book does celebrate his glorious life, it is sad that everyone including Chris could see his downfall coming and nothing seemed to be able to stop the fall.Good book, though it ends very sadly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad Comedy Book
I read this, hoping to have some revealing information and laughter along the way, which tends to happend with comedy books.Instead it is a very good biography that is revealing and sad about Chris. The writing style is different in that there are several people who had a say in what was said - from their perspective of what was happening at the time: Chris' brothers, Chris Meadows, David Spade, Chris' priest, girlfriend and female friends.

I was hoping for more insight into Chris, but it seems that he had such a wall around himself - due to low self esteem or whatever, that he was not truly known by most of the people around him.It was sad to read about how he hung out with the type of people he hung out with and would do whatever he wanted (drug use, etc.) as long has he prayed first.

Very sad.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great subject, well meaning, but way too short.
As a fan of Chris Farley's work on SNL and in movies, I was looking forward to some insight into this troubled man's life.Sadly, this book contains precious little insight into Chris and his sad demise.

If you too have laughed out loud at the antics and performances made famous by Chris, and were saddened by his early passing, then you may find this book an interesting, albeit very brief, look at his career and life. However, the in depth analysis is lacking and the book is far too short for the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Less Than What I Expected
I beleive I know more about Chris Farley than Ms. Anderson does. Seems as though she only watched the Saturday Night Live sketches because she had too.
This book reads like a high school essay. All the author does is rehash what we all saw on "The E!True Hollywood Story". Describing the sketches Chris had performed verbatim, with bad grammar no less, who couldn't do that? Seems as though the author cut and pasted SNL sketches, Entertainment Tonight interveiws and magazine articles together to write this pamphlet.
If you are a true fan of Mr.Farley's, I'd advice you to wait until a deeply researched book is published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chris Farley
It was nice to read a story from someone who seems to actually love Chris as much as I do.There was a lot of negativity after his death in the tabloids so it was great to read something celebrating the wonderful man he was offstage and on.I love you Chris!Miss youuuuuuuuuuuuu!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Excellent book that considers several factors including gender guiding lines, family atmosphere, culture, as well as the nature of addiction in providing an analysis of these three sad lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
Very well crafted work here. The author provides a great deal of compelling evidence to suggest how early Lifestyle patterns influence faulty thinking later on in life. Beyond the technical aspects of this technique, this book takes great pain to identify the struggles each of these men underwent to set things right in their lives, while still falling victim to their deeply habituated behavior. I never fully considered how common these compensatory behaviors are in comedians, and this book definitely holds a light up to this phenomenon. ... Read more

Excerpt: Davis Eli "David" Ruffin (January 18, 1941 June 1, 1991) was an American soul singer and musician most famous for his work as one of the lead singers of the Temptations from 1964 to 1968 (or the group's "Classic Five" period as it was later known). He was the lead voice on such famous songs as "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." Known for his unique raspy and anguished tenor vocals, Ruffin was ranked as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2008. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 for his work with the Temptations. Fellow Motown recording artist Marvin Gaye once said admiringly of Ruffin that, "I heard in a strength my own voice lacked." Ruffin was born Davis Eli Ruffin on January 18, 1941 in the rural unincorporated community of Whynot, Mississippi, the son of Eli, a Baptist minister, and Ophelia Ruffin (née Davis). His father was strict and at times violently abusive. Ruffin's mother died just months after his birth and his father remarried a schoolteacher, Earline, in 1942. As a young child, Ruffin, along with his other siblings (older brothers Quincy and Jimmy, and sister Rita Mae), traveled with their father and their stepmother as a family gospel group opening shows for Mahalia Jackson, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi among others. He also had an older sister Rosetta who died as a child. Ruffin sang in the choir at Mount Salem Methodist Church, talent shows, and wherever else he could. Excerpt: Sir Stephen Tyrone Colbert, KSJ, DFA, (pronounced ; born on May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian and television host. He is the host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a satirical news show in which Colbert portrays a caricatured version of conservative political pundits. Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically acclaimed sketch comedy series Exit 57. Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show, however, that first introduced him to a wide audience.
