Excerpt: Keene Fitzpatrick (December 25, 1864 May 22, 1944) was a track coach, athletic trainer, professor of physical training and gymnasium director for 42 years at Yale University (18901891, 18961898), the University of Michigan (18941895, 18981910), and Princeton University (19101932). He was considered "one of the pioneers of intercollegiate sport." As a young man in the 1880s, Fitzpatrick was a sprinter with the national champion Natick Hook and Ladder Company team. As a coach, he is credited with inventing modern pole-vaulting technique and with coaching numerous Olympic gold medalists, including Archie Hahn, Ralph Rose, Charles Dvorak and Ralph Craig. He was also the trainer for the Michigan Wolverines football teams from 18941895 and 18981909, including Fielding Yost's legendary "point-a-minute" teams from 19011905. Fitzpatrick was born in Natick, Massachusetts in 1864. He died in Princeton, New Jersey at age 79 in 1944. Excerpt: Michael David Watt (born December 20, 1957 in Portsmouth, Virginia) is an American bass guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is best-known for co-founding the rock bands Minutemen, dos, and fIREHOSE; as of 2003, he is also the bassist for the reunited Stooges and a member of the art rock/jazz/punk/improv group Banyan as well as many other post-Minutemen projects. CMJ New Music called Watt a "seminal post-punk bass player." In November 2008, Watt received the Bass Player Magazine lifetime achievement award, presented by Flea. When he was young, Watt's family moved to San Pedro, California, where he became good friends with D. Boon. Watt and Boon picked up bass and guitar, respectively. Watt was a fan of T Rex and Blue Öyster Cult, while Boon's exposure to rock music was limited to Creedence Clearwater Revival, another Watt favorite. By the mid-1970s, Watt and Boon formed a band called The Reactionaries with drummer George Hurley and vocalist Martin Tamburovich. The band later became The Minutemen with another drummer named Frank Tonche, who only lasted two shows with the group; Hurley, who had been in the short-lived New Wave group Hey Taxi! at the time the Minutemen first formed, rejoined Watt and Boon. After signing with SST Records in 1980, The Minutemen began touring constantly, releasing a number of albums along the way. Their music was based on the speed, brevity and intensity of punk, but included elements of jazz, folk, and funk. In 1984, Watt met Black Flag bassist Kira Roessler during a Black Flag/Minutemen tour. They soon became romantically involved, and subsequently began collaborating on songs, including material on...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=148041 ... Read more

Excerpt:Bill Holbert William Henry Holbert (March 14, 1855 in Baltimore, Maryland - March 20, 1935 in Laurel, Maryland ) was a catcher in the National League and American Association baseball leagues, playing from 1876 through 1888. He holds the major league record for career at-bats without a home run, failing to do so in his 2335 at-bats. However, he was playing in an era when triples were more common than home runs, due to the spacious parks and poor quality of the balls used. Bill Holbert started his career with the nascent Louisville Grays of 1876. He sat out the 1877 year and in 1878 played for the Milwaukee Grays , followed by Syracuse Stars and the Troy Trojans , both in 1879. Holbert is also credited with managing one game, a loss, in 1879 while with the Syracuse Stars. He stayed with the Trojans, and the National League, until 1883, when he joined the New York Metropolitans of the new American Association . The Metropolitans traded him to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms after the 1887 season. Bill Holbert retired in 1888, playing just 15 games with the Bridegrooms that year. When the new Players' League started up in 1890, Holbert was one of the original umpires. Career assessment Bill Holbert's career batting average was a weak .208, with a slugging average at a very low .237. Although batting averages were generally low in the 19th century, Holbert's was lower than the average. The 1879 Syracuse Stars, for example, had a team average of only .227, while Holbert hit .201. Holbert's best year was 1881, with Troy... ... Read more

Product Description
A political history of Northern Ireland is reprinted here. Michael Farrell charts the story of Northern Ireland from its violent birth to its violent present. He describes the bloody pogroms with which the Unionist leaders, armed and financed by Britain, established their state. He records the fruitless efforts of the Catholics in and out of parliament, to redress their grievances. He shows how, in every decade, they have been driven to armed revolt. And he describes the few great moments of working-class solidarity and the way Unionist leaders crushed the working-class movement with sectarian politics. Farrell argues that this crisis can only be resolved by British withdrawal and an end to partition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Read on Northern Ireland's History
Farrell's "Northern Ireland: The Orange State" is tough to find but well worth the effort for those seriously interested in the history and politics of Northern Ireland.Written in 1976 by a committed Irish republican and socialist, this not the book for someone with no prior background in Northern Irish history.Yet the same characteristics that make it unsuitable for newcomers to the topic -- its age and biased viewpoint -- make it valuable for students of Northern Ireland.

Farrell's history is not simply a curiosity, however. His treatment of Northern Ireland's early history (1920s through 1950s) is far more in-depth than more recent texts, which tend to gloss over the state's formation and pick up the story with the beginning of the present "Troubles" in the late 1960s.Additionally, Farrell is a good history writer and his narrative style is often more engaging than more recent, balanced accounts. Those who read extensively on Northern Ireland and wish to add a unique volume to their shelves would do well to track down a copy of this book. ... Excerpt: Daniel "Danny" Driscoll (1855 January 23, 1888) was an American criminal and co-leader of the Whyos with Danny Lyons. The two held joint control over the street gang following the death of Mike McGloin in 1883, however both men were executed for separate murders only months apart from each other. They were the last powerful leaders of the organization and, following their downfall, the Whyos were eventually replaced by the Eastman and Five Points Gangs. His arrest and eventual conviction for the murder of well-known Five Points debutante Bridget "Beezy" Garrity during 1886 was preceded by one of the most publicized trials of New York's history. Growing up in a Five Points tenement district, Driscoll amassed a considerable criminal record by the time he had become a young adult. He was arrested 25 times, many of these involving stabbings and shootings, and had served a combined 16 years in both the New York State Penitentiary and New York State Prison. He also acted as a fagin training local youths to pickpocket. In 1882, Driscoll was arrested for grand larceny but escaped from The Tombs when, while being transported in a Black Maria, he switched names with a man arrested for public drunkenness. Upon their arrival, Driscoll simply paid a $10 fine and walked out of the prison. He had become a prominent member of the Whyos by the early 1880s, at the time the most dominant street gang in the city, and became leader of the organization with Danny Lyons following the execution of longtime leader Mike McGloin in 1883. In 1885, he was forced to leave the city and spent some time on the west coast before retur...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19701592 ... Read more

Rozema finished fourth in the 1977 Rookie of the Year voting behind Eddie Murray, but he was selected as The Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year. He was part of a phenomenal group of rookies with the 1977 Tigers that also included Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Lance Parrish and Steve Kemp. After a promising rookie year, Rozema never won more than nine games in a season. In 1978, he finished with a 9-12 record, 11 complete games and an Adjusted ERA+ of 124.
