Product Description
Youth participatory evaluation (YPE) combines action research and participatory evaluation's commitment to stakeholder empowerment with the new philosophy of positive youth development, which emphasizes young people as community assets and resources rather than as a source of social problems. This volume illustrates a broad range of approaches YPE advocates have used to enrich evaluation practice and strength programs for youth by involving young people as researchers and evaluators.

Kim Sabo begins by arguing that youth-led evaluation by it's very nature promotes youth development, because these evaluations constitute Vygotskian zones of proximal development, situations where developmental learning through performance can take place. Les Voakes uses a case study of a conference organized by Town Youth Participation Strategies to illustrate how involving youth in the planning, operational decision-making, and evaluation of programs that directly affect them can benefit both the young participants and the programs themselves. Jonathan K. London, Kristen Zimmerman and Nancy Erbstein provide case studies of evaluation methods that link community and youth development practices. Genevieve Lau, Nancy H. Netherland and Mary Haywood show how YPE can be used as a training process for youth workers, one that enables them to better understand the needs and desires of youth and therefore design better programs for them. Roger A. Hart and Jasmine Rajbhandary examine Nepal's "children's clubs", and Save the Children's YPE-inspired evaluation of these clubs, to show how children can be encouraged to develop their own programs and largely evaluate them by themselves. Bonny L. Gildin describes the All Stars Talent Show Network, an innovative program that unites youth, program funders and adult volunteers in program development and evaluation. Finally, David Fetterman sums up and reflects on the lessons learned by the contributors to this volume.

Description:
East Asian students, the largest international student group in US higher education, are as a group typically known to be silent or reticent in class. This survey examined views of East Asian international graduate students concerning required academic listening and speaking skill levels in their university courses, their own difficulties in meeting these expectations, and their suggestions as to the ways in which English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teachers might better prepare them through listening and speaking activities. Students reported that, in their graduate courses, the three most common academic oral classroom activities were participating in whole-class discussions, raising questions during class, and engaging in small-group discussions. They were most concerned about leading class discussions and participating in whole-class discussions. They considered formal oral presentations and listening comprehension the most important skills for academic success in graduate courses, and pronunciation of English and note-taking skills the least important. Several important issues and specific pedagogical suggestions for EAP instructions, curriculum planning and material development emerged from the current study. ... Read more

Description:
The electrospray of conducting liquids operated in the cone-jet mode is well known to have the unique ability of generating droplets uniform in size over a phenomenal range of sizes depending primarily on the liquid flow rate and physical properties. Since there is a monotonic dependence of size on flow rate, the liquid flow rates that can be dispersed are modest if the goal is to produce very small (below a few micrometers in diameter) droplets. Yet, this is precisely the application niche for which few, if any, atomization alternatives are available. Multiplexing the spray source is indispensable for the electrospray capabilities to have an impact in high-value-added applications. We report here on a novel approach to multiplexing based on a well-known, but hitherto unexploited, regime of operation, the multi-jet mode. Ordinarily, such a mode is rather unsteady and the range of flow rates at which appreciable multiplexing is achieved is small. However, if the multi-jet mode is anchored by some sharp features (e.g., grooves, ridges, etc.) machined at the outlet of the atomizer, to intensify the electric field at discrete points around its perimeter, then the cone-jets are simultaneously anchored at these features and a stable mode of operation is identified over several hundreds of volts and a broad range of flow rates. Most importantly, so long as the machining is accurately reproduced from point to point, droplets generated do not vary significantly in size from spray to spray. As a result, a compact, inexpensive and versatile multiplexing system is realized without sacrificing droplet monodispersity. ... Read more

Description:
This paper presents results of air mass characterization and the associated microphysical and optical properties of Asian aerosols, using the cluster analysis technique for classifying air mass back-trajectories arrived at Gosan on the Jeju Island, Korea during the ACE-Asia campaign. Five distinct clusters of trajectories were taken to explain each transport regime. The temporal variation of the transported air masses could be well explained by the consecutive and stepwise change of air masses between statistically classified clusters. The cluster-mean trajectory exhibited its close relationship with the synoptic-scale circulation pattern. In addition, it was shown that the composite of mean sea-level pressure field is useful for explaining favorable meteorological conditions for long-range transport of dust and anthropogenic pollution in East Asia. The highest light scattering and absorption coefficients for sub-10- and submicron aerosols as well as highest concentrations of ^2^2^2Rn and condensation nuclei are associated with the air mass types accompanying dusts and pollutants. The cluster-mean single scattering albedo (SSA) for sub-10- and submicron aerosols ranged 0.88-0.90 and 0.81-0.86, respectively. This value of SSA indicates the large contribution of submicron aerosol for the light absorption in East Asia. The concentration of ^2^2^2Rn and aerosol microphysical and optical properties for marine air mass suggests that the marine air masses are somewhat influenced by continental outflows. The minor differences in aerosol microphysical and optical properties among continental clusters with similar routes and different transport speed implies that the effect of transport speed may not be significant if the transport routes are similar. ... Description:
Lagrangian techniques have previously been employed to extend initial mixing calculations beyond the near field, either alone or in combination with Eulerian models. Computational efficiency and accuracy are of prime importance in designing these 'hybrid' approaches to simulating a pollutant discharge, and we characterize three relatively simple Lagrangian techniques in this regard: random walk particle tracking (RWPT), forward Gaussian puff tracking (FGPT), and backward Gaussian puff tracking (BGPT). RWPT is generally the most accurate, capable of handling complexities in the flow field and domain geometry. It is also the most computationally expensive, as a large number of particles are generally required to generate a smooth concentration distribution. FGPT and BGPT offer dramatic savings in computational expense, but their applicability is limited by accuracy concerns in the presence of spatially variable flow or diffusivity fields or complex no-flux or open boundary conditions. For long simulations, particle and/or puff methods can transition to an Eulerian model if appropriate, since the relative computational expense of Lagrangian methods increases with time for continuous sources. Although we focus on simple Lagrangian models that are not suitable to all environmental applications, many of the implementation and computational efficiency concerns outlined herein would also be relevant to using higher order particle and puff methods to extend the near field. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating personal accounts of controversial history
Poet Kim Chernin wrote the memoir "In My Mother's House" because her mother asked her to, and the book began with her mother's proposal. It took seven years for her to finish writing. The book uses a structure of alternative chapters: one in the present time, in a family setting, with the mother starting to tell a story, and the author expressing her emotions toward her mother and the writing experience; the next from her mother's POV, telling a personal story interwoven with a piece of the American Communist history before and during the McCarthy period. The mother's stories hold my interest throughout, as she was so genuinely enthusiastic about being an organizer of Communist activities, even though it meant she had to go to jail and face deportation. When she lived in the Soviet Union during 1932-34 before WWII, she found that country the realization of her idealistic dream and she loved her life there wholeheartedly. Her experience in America during the McCarthy period, on the other hand, illustrates how cruel and unjust a so-called democratic government can become when it operates on belief instead of the constitution. All this is so controversial. I kept wanting to know what the mother would think after Stalin's crimes were exposed later. It turns out the mother was never disillusioned while the daughter eventually was during her own visit to Moscow in the 1970s. It is the personal accounts of a controversial history that fascinates me, while I'm not sure how much the structure of alternative chapters helped. I think the mother's POV helped a lot, as her voice is quite distinctive from the author's and this made the mother's stories more vivid. I found the author's chapters in between her mother's storytelling somewhat uninteresting with the presentation of her own emotions too repetitive, to the point it got boring. Overall, one flaw cannot mar the jade, "In My Mother's House" was a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Notice:
This is Kim Chernin, merely wishing to point out that you list In My Mother's House as highly available, and as at the same time out of print. It isn't out of print.I hope you can correct this. thanks. Kim

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother and daughter revisit their struggles with communism
A compelling true story about an altruistic woman's growth as a charismatic communist organizer and the challenges/sacrifices she and her family face as a result of her ideals and activism.Starts with themother's version of her life, including the exhilarating but few yearsspent in the Soviet Union shortly after the revolution, and ends withdaughter's darker experience in Soviet Union and her struggle to accept hermother while rejecting her ideology.

"In My Mother's House"provides an eye-opening look at a period of history when ordinary peoplefelt like they truly could change the world. Many may find the stark blackand white view of communist activity in America they were taught in schoolno longer rings true.

When the mother and daughter describe their ownactivities, the reading is effortless. However, when Chernin diverges tocomment upon the actual process of storytelling, the reader can becomeannoyed and bogged down by Chernin's excessive self-absorbed emoting. However, this is a tiny part of the book and can be easily skimmedover.

Rose's story is very inspirational. Many will be motivated to lookat their own lives and activities and ponder how they can be of moreservice.Rose Chernin was a tiny woman, butfueled by her strongdedication to justice and fairness, she was able to inspire otheridealistic people to change discriminatory laws and create numerous neededcommunity organizations, such as daycare for working women.

This is abook about idealism, finding a purpose in life, mothers and daughers, feminism, communism, unions, American history, and much more.A good readfor active minds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Portrayal
Kim Chernin offers a heart-felt portrayal of matriarchial family history, using both her mother's unique voice and her own. Eloquantly and honestly written, Chernin sits the reader at her mother's (Rose Chernin) feet to experience first-hand the stories told in her mother's house. Born inRussia in the early 1900's, Rose speaks through Kim simply, with exquisitdetail about life in the Russian Pale of Settlement, her families move toNew York and her alliance with the communist party. If for no other reason, this book is worth reading purely for the portrayal of Rose's voice. ... Read more
