Spencer's View of the State of Ireland.during the middle ages had been distracted by the feudal rivalries of the Fitz-Geralds (or as they were more commonly called the Geraldines) of Kil- dare and the Butlers of Ormond, two of the most illustrious families that an adventurous spirit had introduced and centuries naturalized in that country. Alternately had they been intrusted with the government of the island, or rather of that little section denominated the Pale, which alone was yet amenable to English laws and authority. This impartiality, or to speak more properly, this indifference, with which the kings of England appointed their deputies, was recognised in Ireland by the ruinous experience of distracted councils; and ever as the one rival advanced into the royal confidence, so often were the forces of the other marshalled to counteract his measures and al.i . "Utaint his reputation. The nobles and gentlemen of service groaned under the levies and exactions of either party, while the great body of the settlers were abandoned to the action and reaction of hostility and revenge.During the civil wars of York and Lancaster, Kildare for the white and Ormond for the ... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, outstanding story
My son is four and not yet a reader, but he loves being read to--and in the first 24 hours of having this book we've probably read it at least a dozen times.A better choice than some other early reader books--with word choices that are neither too simple nor too repetitive. The story is told in such an engaging manner that it opens avenues for discussion--my son offers how he would help or serves up editorial comments ("That's not good....").The illustrations are clean, warm and so evocative that my son has joined in offering voices to accompany the illustrations. He will certainly choose this book when he begins to read himself.A wholesome, believable and true story--quite a combination.

5-0 out of 5 stars a interesting story for learning readers.
For my son who is a learning reader, this was a fascinating story. This is another good one in the Pets to the Rescue series. It seems to be hard to find books to interest boys learning to read and this was another one that served as an enticement to get to sit down and read.Again the "true story" aspect was particularly interesting to him. ...
