5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Year Book!
5 BIG stars for this one! This is my New Years Eve tradition---I like to read this book in this time frame; it's very fitting :)In fact, I am going to start my third reading of it today. Just a great, fun compilation of good stories that you really get into; my very favorite is the first one, I just love the way it's written. You won't be disappointed with this book, I highly recommend it :)Enjoy every story, they are all wonderful!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and feminine book!
I loved the format of short stories. This book introduced me to some very funny, female authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good stories
I thought this short story collection was better than "American Girls About Town," also from Downtown Press. Here are my favorite stories from "In One Year and Out the Other", in no particular order:

Beth Kendrick, "The Bad Breakup Regime": This is a fun story abouta man and a woman who seclude themselves and eat Doritos while watching bad television, after the woman's boyfriend leaves her for the man's girlfriend. After sulking for a few months, they whip themselves into the best shape possible so they can hold their heads high at the company New Year's Eve party. Both women work there and all four of the main characters show up at the party, with some surprising results.

Cara Lockwood, "Resolved: A New Year's Resolution List": this story is about Megan, who was dating a married man until recently, and has now drawn up a 600-item resolution list to "improve herself." This story has surprising emotional depth, but is still funny, as Megan deals with group therapy ("this is a safe space") and new love.

Pamela Redmond Satran, "How To Start the New Year Like a Guy": this is about a married woman who decides to act more like a guy in a number of ways. Maybe not surprisingly, she gets her husband to act more like a girl.

Diane Stingley, "Expecting a Call": this was a good story about awoman who's waiting to hear from a guy who got her number at a party. He never calls, but the woman does receive visits from 3 ghosts who give her surprising insight into herself. Sort of a modern-day Scrooge tale about New Year's Eve instead of Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars In One Year... and I Want Another!!!
This book wasn't thought of as being done in short stories when purchased. I was highly pleased though! Almost every story ended up having a little piece of me in it... either something I had once done, same situation happened to me, same scenario. You get the picture. I completely related to this book. Not only did each and every author achieve a portion of me within their novelettes, but also they gave me a chance to branch out to other writing styles and new authors. I HIGHLY recommend this book!! It truly makes a person understand that everything happens for a reason.... and leaves you feeling like a new person inside and out.

4-0 out of 5 stars fine chick lit anthology
This nine tale chick lit anthology is overall an entertaining relatively strong collection. Each tale is well written with none disastrous and a third really superb.Especially enticing are entries by sub-genre favorites Cara Lockwood, Beth Kendrick, and Diane Stingley.Though this reviewer holds a prejudicial belief that that the short story is the perfect medium for this milieu, sub-genre fans including those who prefer novels will appreciate this collection. This reviewer's New Year resolution is to try to read books in a timelier manner.Still better late than never, fans will toast the authors of this delightful lighthearted anthology, which holds up for any holiday as the characters and their respective relationships make for a fun read in time for Valentine's Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trip to Ice Cream Island
The "Friendship Club" is a new line of "Strawberry Shortcake" books designed for slightly older fans of the series. These are chapter books and each is about sixty pages long, with five chapters. It's a wonderful new series that maintains the excellence of the television show.

This is the third book in the series, "The Friendship Trip," the kids are all bored when the sweltering heat of a hot summer keeps them from their favorite activities. They discuss possible trip ideas before finally deciding on a trip to Ice Cream Island --- the home of their filly friends, including Honey Pie Pony. Everyone is excited about this trip except Orange Blossom. She tries to speak up against the trip, but won't say what's bothering her, and so the kids just talk her into it.

Just what is bothering Orange Blossom? And can it be resolved in time to save the trip? These are the questions for readers to ponder as they read "The Friendship Trip." In the end, I think readers will be ultimately satisfied by how things come together.

The book features mini-illustrations throughout, but is mostly text-based. Included with the book is one "Berry Point" --- designed to be collected and redeemed at the show's official website. ... Read more

Study up on Stink-isms from A to Z! A super-funny compendium of wacky
facts with compulsive appeal for fans of Stink and Judy Moody alike.

Where can you view the world’s oldest ham? Who holds the record for the world’s loudest burp? The answers to these and many, many more essential questions can be found in Stink-O-Pedia — just the sort of reference book that Stink Moody, who reads encyclopedias in his spare time, might make up himself. From J-for-Jawbreaker (and how long it would take an average frog to digest one), to P-for-Professional Smeller (and other strange but true careers), to Y-for-Yeti (why not?), this volume contains enough amazing stuff to keep readers saying "No way!" for a googolplex* of years. At the back of the book, facts are cross-referenced with related Stink and Judy Moody titles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointed
First let me say that I don't own this book. This review is based on my experience in finding it and browsing a few pages of it on Amazon.

I found this book in an odd way: a Google image search on 'stink lines'. When I clicked on it and took a peek inside I was expecting to find a book full of information about stinky, smelly, funky stuff (skunks, rotting food, the smell they add to natural gas, etc.) Instead I find it's a book about some character I've never heard of and his pals and such. Might be great for kids who are already fans of the character (I don't know if it really adds any new information, so who knows really) but otherwise not so great, obviously.

One thing I can add that may be of interest to all: the part about belly buttons. It claims that some *psychologists* think the shape of your belly button indicates something about your personality. Huh? Maybe incompetent psychologists, or people who aren't really trained & educated psychologists but claim to be. (Ok, maybe an "outie" *might* indicate a tendency to overeat or get pregnant, but that's kind of a stretch.) I didn't look too much farther. If my son ever wants this book, he will get a fact-checked and annotated version if any.

My son picked up this book after reading one of the Judy Moody books. He loved it, with a nice mix of drawings and text.He wants more!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This was a Christmas gift for our seven-year-old Grandson, and he loved it!Started reading as soon as he opened!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I am pretty disappointed in the book Stink-O-Pedia.I was hoping for more activities that correlated with the Stink series. When I purchased the Judy Moody Way not Boring book of stuff to do the book is full of activites, there was a sticker page, and all activities correlated to the series, Judy Moody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stink - O - Mania!
My 7-year-old son is a HUGE Stink fan!He has read all the books, and is waiting for another to be published. So, when I found this one, I ordered it for him.It is VERY funny. When he's reading it, he wants to stop every minute and tell me something funny from the book.It even lists a website that lets you hear the different sounds that a guinea pig (Stink's pet) makes! This book is LOTS of fun! ... Product Description
Fantasy fans, rejoice! Seven years after writer and editor Robert Silverberg made publishing history with Legends, his acclaimed anthology of original short novels by some of the greatest writers in fantasy fiction, the long-awaited second volume is here. Legends II picks up where its illustrious predecessor left off. All of the bestselling writers represented in Legends II return to the special universe of the imagination that its author has made famous throughout the world. Whether set before or after events already recounted elsewhere, whether featuring beloved characters or compelling new creations, these masterful short novels are both mesmerizing stand-alones—perfect introductions to the work of their authors—and indispensable additions to the epics on which they are based. Beyond any doubt, Legends II is the fantasy event of the season.

ROBIN HOBB returns to the Realm of the Elderlings with “Homecoming,” a powerful tale in which exiles sent to colonize the Cursed Shores find themselves sinking into an intoxicating but deadly dream . . . or is it a memory?
GEORGE R. R. MARTIN continues the adventures of Dunk, a young hedge knight, and his unusual squire, Egg, in “The Sworn Sword,” set a generation before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire.
ORSON SCOTT CARD tells a tale of Alvin Maker and the mighty Mississippi, featuring a couple of ne’er-do-wells named Jim Bowie and Abe Lincoln, in “The Yazoo Queen.”
DIANE GABALDON turns to an important character from her Outlander saga—Lord John Grey—in “Lord John and the Succubus,” a supernatural thriller set in the early days of the Seven Years War.
ROBERT SILVERBERG spins an enthralling tale of Majipoor’s early history—and remote future—as seen through the eyes of a dilettantish poet who discovers an unexpected destiny in “The Book of Changes.”
TAD WILLIAMS explores the strange afterlife of Orlando Gardiner, from his Otherland saga, in “The Happiest Dead Boy in the World.”
ANNE McCAFFREY shines a light into the most mysterious and wondrous of all places on Pern in the heartwarming “Beyond Between.”
RAYMOND E. FEIST turns from the great battles of the Riftwar to the story of one soldier, a young man about to embark on the ride of his life, in “The Messenger.”
ELIZABETH HAYDON tells of the destruction of Serendair and the fate of its last defenders in “Threshold,” set at the end of the Third Age of her Symphony of Ages series.
NEIL GAIMAN gives us a glimpse into what befalls the man called Shadow after the events of his Hugo Award–winning novel American Gods in “The Monarch of the Glen.”
TERRY BROOKS adds an exciting epilogue to The Wishsong of Shannara in “Indomitable,” the tale of Jair Ohmsford’s desperate quest to complete the destruction of the evil Ildatch . . . armed only with the magic of illusion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good writers make good books
This is an excellent book of short novels by some of the best fantasy writers of their time.

If you're a fan of even one of the authors in this volume, you have to own this book. The stories are tied to many of their series and available nowhere else.

For me, the Terry Brooks story, which is a direct sequel to "Wishsong of Shannara," is the selling point, but all of them more than worth the price of the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book was a sales trick.
I have been stuck in the mud with too many serial authors.I feel trapped by books with cliff hangers which require you to read the next book to have any closure.I was finally looking for a book of short fantasy stories when I bought this book and what I got was a book whose only intention was to sell you on even more serial authors.Without checking, I'm almost certain that every short story in this book is a glimpse at a larger serial universe, and only a couple of the stories were any good. For anyone not weighed down by the burder of undending sequential stories, this book will serve its purpose to sell you on a few really good authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
The second Legends anthology isn't as good as the first, and doesn't have the one outstanding piece like Martin's Hedge Knight in the first book, but there is still a handful of good stories.

Another look at Orlando Gardiner from Otherworld was appreciated, and Gabaldon and Haydon were new - one ok, one bad, it seems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the masters of fantasy.
I originally bought this collection simply for G.R.R. Martin's story.I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed all of the stories included.Robin Hobb, whom I have not previously read was especially good. And the Raymond E. Feist story of the messenger was great.Basically, this collection does a great job of introducing the reader to a wide and varied number of fantasy authors.I found it at Barnes & Noble in the bargin section. It was a great deal!Get it if you can find it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Going back for more
Both Legends I and II are must haves for any SF/Fantasy fan.I orginally purchased Legends I for Robert Jordan's and Tad William's short stories.I then promptly put it up on my shelf for a few years.I picked up Legends II for the Robin Hobb short.I then also filed it on my shelf.Somehow I have made it through tons of fantasy while dodging some of the most "advertised" names.I recently ran out of books to read.In my search for new authors, I scowered the net, and asked several friends for recommendations. One of my friends suggested I pick up Terry Pratchett, my net search said try George R.R. Martin... I had a fleeting thought that "hey they are popular, wonder if they are in Legends".Sure enough they are and then some.I pulled both Legends I and II off of my shelf and devoured several of the stories that I had previously ignored. It made a perfect way of deciding which authors I would like to read more of and which ones I could probably pass on.Both Legends I and II are treasures which should not be overlooked.I sincerly hope there is a Legends III. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The little old lady who was not afraid of anything
This story is a great read aloud. I purchased this story because it advertised book and tape.I ordered this material to have it in a listening center in my classroom.Sadly it did not come with a tape.Advertising was not correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars The little old lady who was not afraid of anything
This is a wonderfully interactive story that groups of children love.I have used it with special needs children, as well as children ranging in age from toddlers to kindergarteners.Giving supervising adults and exuberant children roles to play as they hold the real items of clothing mentioned in the story helps the group visiting our church pumpkin patch story hour feel involved and comfortable. In addition, the story is predictable, thus allowing the storyteller to get the entire group involved as they help verbally tell the story. We have perused books for years looking for another Halloween story to add to our Pumpkin Patch Story Hour repertoire and have not found anything that even comes close to comparing.Great story!

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 y.o. loves this book
I've had this book around the house for awhile and just recently found it during a move. For some reason I was thinking it was like the "Old Lady who swallowed a fly" books but its not.... its so much better.

My 3 year old son knows every part. We can ask him what the pair of shoes do, or the hat, and he will tell us and imitate the actions. His favorite part is when the Big Orange Pumpkin Head says boo. Now he calls all pumpkins, Pumpkin Heads.

Its a fun book that should be part of every family's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a fun and engaging Halloween read!
We're on a Halloween roll in books and this is an excellent choice for parents/teachers/librarians. It makes for a great read aloud and invites listeners and audience participation. The story is of an old lady who is not afraid of anything. She goes out one Halloween night and encounters some strange objects floating around by themselves - a pair of shoes, a pair of pants, a shirt, gloves and hat, and BOO! A pumpkin! It's fun to see children's expressions (I read this aloud to my daughter and her friends) as they listen to the story, with anticipation building as to whether the old lady will ever get scared! The story ends on a creative and fun note, and children will have lots of fun chanting along to:

And the shoes went CLOMP, CLOMP,
One pair of pants for WIGGLE, WIGGLE,
One shirt go SHAKE, SHAKE,
Two gloves go CLAP, CLAP,
And one hat go NOD, NOD.

Happy Halloween!
