4-0 out of 5 stars Instant puppet theatre
How lovely to be able to buy in one book the story (although in a very short version)and paper dolls that represent the main actors. It is especially nice since the characters wear styles that are radicallydifferent from modern styles. It is a story I have enjoyed myself as achild, and one which is not yet translated into my language which has madeit difficult to share it with children of today. Only one small regret -why so flimsy? I will have to get another copy, the first set of dolls woreout, this time however I will back all pieces with thin cardboard beforeletting any child touch! ... Product Description

South-west Lancashire boasts the largest, and arguably the finest, tract of coastal sand dunes in the country and is the home of an extraordinary cluster of golf courses. These clubs have justifiably attained an international reputation: both Southport and Ainsdale and Royal Birkdale have hosted Ryder Cup matches with the U.S., and Royal Birkdale is a regular venue for the Open Championship; while West Lancashire, Formby, Hillside, and Hesketh have for many years staged major championships and representative matches, both amateur and professional. A feature of this golfing coast is Merseyrail's Northern Line. West Lancashire, Formby, Southport, and Ainsdale and Hillside all have holes where a slice or a pull will put a ball over the railway fence and out of bounds. The same was true of the Freshfield Club until the Royal Air Force requisitioned its links for an airfield during World War II. Royal Birkdale does not flank "the Line," although contemporary professionals could probably drive a ball from this course, across the Hillside links, onto the railway. This book tells the story of the pioneers who founded the clubs, emphasizing the critical roles played by the landowners and the railway company and the relationship of the promotion of golf to their commercial interests. It examines of the visionary contribution of the local authority and the crucial inter-relationships between the clubs in the early years. The golfers, many members of more than one of the clubs, truly formed a community. Golf in south-west Lancashire is placed in its social, economic, and spatial setting and it is argued that golf was not merely a response to change but one of the engines of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I gave this book an excellent rating because it is a compilation of some of the greatest material out there. I do not find every one of the compiled sources to be excellent, but I believe that everyone who picks up this book will find that a majority of this book speaks to them in their own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Deeper Devotional Reading
Over the years I've made a habit of reading and using a variety of Christian devotional material. Most of it is average and ordinary, but a few are truly blessings.Foster and Smith's "Devotional Classics" is a devotional book that fits into the latter category.

There's so much I could say about the book, but I'll summarize why this book could be beneficial to so many by making 5 points.

1.The devotional selections are taken from saints from all ages of the church. The saints range from Church Fathers such as Augustine and Chrysostom, to medieval and 16th-17th century writers such as Bernard of Clairvaux, Lancelot Andrewes, and John Calvin, to modern writers such as C.S. Lewis and Dallas Willard.

2.The selections introduce us to a wide variety of devotional writers who we are now free to investigate further for ourselves.Foster and Smith provide a brief background for each devotional writer, before the devotional selection.52 different writers are represented, coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The selections are brief enough to read in a few minutes but long enough to give us a flavor of the person who is writing.

3.The devotionals are grouped according to 6 sections that represent different
spiritualities: "Preparing for the Spiritual Life," "The Prayer-Filled Life," "The Virtuous Life," "The Spirit-Empowered Life," "The Compassionate Life," and "The Word-Centered Life."

4.There are additional helpful materials after each devotional selection: a relevant Bible passage, questions for reflection, and suggested exercises.

5.The material can be used profitably by either individuals or groups, and the 52 readings could be read over the course of a year, one per week.

There is one flaw in the book: there are no Sacramental Life or Ecclesiastical Life sections. Each of these would be the way the ancient and medieval writers would have seen things, and each of which would more properly place private devotions in the context of the Church and Sacraments.

In spite of this one weakness, this is an excellent introduction that will hopefully lead many Christians to explore deeper devotions with the saints of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Spiritual Resource
This book is a great synopsis of Christian devotional masters.I highly recommend it to anyone serious about getting closer to Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devotional Classics: Selected Readings
I am enjoying reding the book.It covers a diverse group of authors over a vey long period of time. But the subject is as relevant as if it were written today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Digest of Devotionals From Many Noteable Authors
This book is a digest of devotionals from many authors at varying times in the past. Some of the devotionals are written by authors not too long after the death and resurection of Jesus. Most are about 4 to 6 pages of reading, followed by reflection and/or group questions. This is a good book for a Bible study like reading group. This is a good book to get others perspectives on many subjects. ... Read more

Product Description
The great 19th century boom in church building, spurred by population growth and new religious movements, was already under way whan Victoria became queen in 1837, and it continued until the first world war. The vitality of church design during her reign can only be compared to that during the period of church building between 1150 and 1500. Many important architects like Pugin, Butterfield, Street, Waterhouse and Bodley were involved. The influence of English Decorated Gothic and North European Gothic was especially strong, but there was immense variety and the Romanesque, Byzantine, Classical and Renaissance styles were also much in evidence. This illustrated guide to Victorian churches in England, Scotland and Wales is arranged alphabetically by names of places and covers over 600 churches by some 200 architects whose works are listed at the end. It consists of contributions from 27 different members of the Victorian Society. ... Read more

Product Description
In this 1976 volume, L.P. Elwall-Sutton provides a complete introduction to and survey of the metres used in Persian classical poetry, which extends from the 9th century AD onwards. The book begins with a detailed description of the traditional method of classifying the metres of both Arabic and Persian verse, which had its shortcomings when applied to Persian, not least in conveying the impression that Persian metres are copied from Arabic. The author shows that this is not the case, and then proceeds to a fairer analysis and classification of the metres actually used by Persian poets, based on a wide cross-section of Persian poetry. A final section suggests lines of research necessary to establish the sources of these metres and their links with pre-Islamic verse, popular verse and the patterns of ordinary speech. This work will be of interest to students and teachers of Persian language and literature, specialists in Arabic, Turkish and Urdu. ... Read more

Product Description
We have rapidly grown used to the idea, particularly since the declaration of a world-wide war on terrorism, that between Islam and the West there exists a deep historical and ideological gulf. Christopher Walker's book turns such accepted views on their head and paints instead a picture of two belief systems which have a long history of toleration and mutual influence. When Islam first appeared in the seventh century it did not appear to be radically different from Christianity. Bede noted the coming of the Saracens without rancour and Offa, king of Mercia in the eighth century, adopted the gold dinar of Baghdad as his currency. In the Tudor period, Elizabeth I's positive relations with the Ottoman Porte led to a near-alliance between Protestantism and Islam. Sultan Murad III addressed her majesty as 'most sapient princess of the magnanimous followers of Jesus ...' Now the politicization of Islam and its association with nations reforming themselves after the colonial shifts of both World Wars has led to a polarization dormant since the Crusades. Is there, asks Christopher Walker, a way back from the brink? Will we ever experience again an inclusive and accepting worldview? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Conte Maggi's Mille Miglia
During its thirty years of existence, from 1927 to 1957, the Mille Miglia was considered "the greatest road race in the world." In his book Peter Miller has captured the spirit of this great event with over 150photographs - many of which have never been published, and contributionsfrom Stirling Moss, Piero Taruffi, Alfred Neubauer and the Contessa diMaggi. Miller has produced a family album because when the race was heldall the drivers were treated as family and the event took on the feeling ofa family reunion at the Maggis' Calino villa. The story of the Mille Migliais the story of one man's dream, Conte Aymo Maggi with the help of threefriends sought to revenge the loss of the Italian Grand Prix to Milan bycreating the worlds greatest road race for sports cars. They wanted to spurthe Italian motor industry out of its doldrums and bring publicity toBrescia. The four musketeers as they were known decided on a race fromBrescia to Rome and back to Brescia. The distance of approximately 1600kilometers converted to 1000 miles which had a nice ring to it. One of thefour Franco Mazzotti remarked that the Roman legions used to calculatetheir marches in miles "so why don't we call it a race for the Coppadella Mille Miglia?" Renzo Castegneto, who would become Maggi's righthand man and the one responsible for the organization of the race came upwith the famous symbol of the red arrow emblazoned with the words 1000MIGLIA.

Chapters such as Race Hazards, the Final Lap and The Man WhoLoved Life bring back echoes of a long gone age. Peter Miller describes allof the problems that had to be overcome each year the race was run, thepolitics and the rivalries that are a part of Italian daily life are alldescribed in an engaging style. We learn of Conte Maggi's own racingexploits as one of the leading Italian drivers of the 20's. The race wouldtake more and more of his energy and he discontinued driving. In the end itwas said that he died of a broken heart when his race was banned after1957. ... Read more
