Issue d'une famille d'aristocrates hongrois (son père était le Baron Paul Schell von Bauschlott, un diplomate alors très connu et sa mère la Comtesse Katharina Maria Etelka Georgina Elisabeth Teleki de Szék), elle naquit en 1944 en Hongrie dans la pauvreté, les biens de sa famille ayant été confisqués par les Nazis dès le début de la seconde guerre mondiale. À la prise du pouvoir par les communistes en 1948, elle trouve asile à Vienne et à Salzbourg en Autriche, puis émigre aux États-Unis en 1950 où son père renonce à tous ses titres nobiliaires afin d'acquérir la nationalité américaine. Lots of tidbits about other celebrities
I enjoyed this book although Zsa Zsa seems to contradict herself saying she doesn't care about money or titles. One thing many of her wealthy husbands had in common were that they were stingy: Conrad Hilton, George Sanders, and a few others not known to the public. While she seems to marry men whom she is physically attracted to, maybe because of their stinginess, she didn't feel wealthy by them. Her last husband was not wealthy but seems to have a title they can make money off of. It's hard to understand how he inherited castles as an adopted adult before true family heirs. Anyway, since the castles are open to the public, I'm sure that brings in income. Coincidentally, when she doesn't marry a man she loves, he has no money.

What's much more interesting is what she says about her fellow celebrities (movie stars, rich people, etc.). Zsa Zsa describes many celebrities that aren't very nice people. However, maybe the instances that Zsa Zsa describes are a one-time bad incident about the celebrity. Zsa Zsa also describes many more celebrities that have very good qualities.

Zsa Zsa doesn't talk much about her daughter during her marriage to George Sanders, but it seems her daughter was there throughout. This is probably because the book is written like incidents in her life rather than a chronological tale of her life. Her mother and sisters seem to be mentioned as often as her daughter. The book is really about the men in her life and her fellow celebrities.

The fact that she stayed friendly with almost all of her ex-husbands says something good about her character. Conrad Hilton even helped her hold some of her future weddings after him. She is proud to be an American after escaping Europe during the Nazi era. After reading the book, along with the knowledge of watching her on TV, Zsa Zsa is one celebrity whose reputation will last years after she's gone. Some love her, some dislike her, but she's always memorable.

One life is more than enough
A possible rejected title for Zsa Zsa Gabor's autobiography: "All The Men I Slept With, And All The Gems They Bought Me." Gabor's biography "One Life is Not Enough" is as full of dishing as a kitchen sink, but after a while her gossipy revelations become boring instead of entertaining.

Born to a rich Hungarian family, Zsa Zsa Gabor first got married at the age of fifteen, but left her husband after the death of her lover, Turkish leader Ataturk. Eight more marriages came after that, including George Sanders, Prince Frederick von Anhalt, and Conrad Hilton (yes, from THAT Hilton family). Not to mention a small army of lovers that included Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, and more.

Gossipy memoirs are always a fun guilty pleasure, the sort of thing to tuck inside a weekly news magazine at lunch. Gabor reveals plenty of sexy details (including making out with Greta Garbo) that are above and beyond even what tabloids usually print, and she does in it a very straightforward, matter-of-fact manner.

Unfortunately, her exploits start to get annoying. The word "diamond" is used constantly (we get it, Zsa Zsa -- you love diamonds), and there is little of Gabor's life except who she slept with and why. There isn't a great deal about her daughter or family... except when ex-hubby George Sanders married her sister Magda. Some of her stories are questionable -- like Sanders wanting to watch Gabor bed a Catholic priest, or Gabor sleeping with Sinatra to make him leave her apartment. And others raise weird questions (if she's so amazingly sexy, why did her husbands keep cheating?).

Gabor gushes ad nauseam about her assorted lovers and husbands, few of which are actually around much. Initially, since her first lover was a god-king, it's an interesting tale. But when she gets to Hollywood, these guys mostly start to blur together. What's more, Gabor certainly was telling the truth when she said she liked being around men more than women -- her descriptions of women like Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly and any other beautiful heterosexual actress are pretty catty, to say the least.

Zsa Zsa Gabor's autobiography starts off as a delicious gossipfest, but eventually deteriorates into a listing of the men she slept with and/or married. "One Life is Not Enough" is way more than enough. ... Read more
