3-0 out of 5 stars Warhammer
This book is the rulebook for the fanatasy game of Warhammer- you collect, assemble, and paint an army of your chosing (things like Elves, Orcs, Goblins, vampires, and knights, among other things) and then partake in battles and campaigns with other players. Very useful if you're interested in actually playing the game, but not light reading- it's a rulebook, not meant for enjoyment. ... Read more

Product Description

For many today Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stand as towering representatives of European music of the eighteenth century, composers whose works reflect intellectual, religious, and aesthetic trends of the period. Research on their compositions continues in many ways to shape our broader understanding of eighteenth-century musical thought and its contexts. This collection of essays by leading authorities in the field offers a variety of new perspectives on the two composers, as well as some of their important contemporaries, Haydn in particular. Addressing topics as diverse as the historiography of eighteenth-century music, concepts of time and musical form, the idea of the musical work and its relation to publishing practices, compositional process, and performance practice, these essays together constitute a major contribution to eighteenth-century studies.

This book had its origin in a conference that took place at the Music Department of Harvard University on September 23–25, 2005, to honor Professor Christoph Wolff, Adams University Professor at Harvard University.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Addition
I believe that this rulebook makes a nice addition to the two previous rulebooks: Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. As with the previous two rulebooks, it gives you all of the general movement and combat rules with an additions of some new rules.

A general overview of the table of contents as follows:

1. Introduction to the Game Rules
- In case this is your first copy of a LOTR rulebook, they cover all of the basic game rules such as: How the game turns work, the move phase, the shooting phase, the fighting phase and cavalry.

2. Advanced Rules
- Some of the advanced rules cover Courage, Heroes, Weapons, Banners and Forces.

3. The Free Peoples
- You are given a list of all the good heroes and warriors in the ROTK expansion.

4. Forces of Darkness
- This section lists all of the evil heroes and warriors and also provides setup details for 12 different scenarios.

5. The War of the Ring
- This section provides information on some of the good heroes, assembling the miniatures, painting your models, making terrain, and the gaming hobby itself.

Overall, you have a little bit of the same information in the beginning as you receive in the previous two rulebooks, but there are all new ROTK pictures of models used in presenting the information and all of the new scenario's and stats provided for all of the new ROTK miniatures makes this a helpful addition to the previous two rulebooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars what this book is about
This Book Helps With Painting The Miniatures, The Game Rules, Scenarios, Making Scenery, This Manual forms a complete and invaluable guide to collection, painting, and gaming with Games Workshop detailed and extensive range of the LOTR miniatures. Within its colorfully illustrated pages you will find the essential rules, information and inspiration to bring the battles of Middle earth your own tabletop.

Excerpt: Dennis Andrew Nilsen (born 23 November 1945, Fraserburgh, Scotland) also known as the Muswell Hill Murderer and the Kindly Killer is a British serial killer who lived in London. Nilsen killed at least fifteen men and boys in gruesome circumstances between 1978 and 1983, and was known to retain corpses for sex acts. He was eventually caught after his disposal of dismembered human entrails blocked his household drains: the drain cleaning company found that the drains were congested with human flesh and contacted the police. Due to the similarities between their crimes, sexuality and lifestyle, Nilsen has been referred to as the "British Jeffrey Dahmer." Nilsen was born at 10 High Street, Strichen, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire to a Scottish mother, Betty Whyte, and a Norwegian father, Olav Magnus Moksheim, who adopted the surname Nilsen. His father was an alcoholic and his parents divorced when he was four years old. His mother remarried and sent her son to his grandparents, but after a couple of years he was sent back to his mother again. Nilsen claimed the first traumatic event to shape his life came about when he was a small child, when his beloved grandfather died of a heart attack in October, 1951. His strict Roman Catholic mother insisted that he should view the body before burial. During Nilsen's childhood, his mother and stepfather frequently lectured him about the "impurities of the flesh". In 1961, Nilsen left school and enlisted in the British Army where he became a cook in South Yemen, Cyprus, Berlin, Germany and the Shetland Islands. He served in the army for 11 years, earning a General Service M...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=579534 ... Read more

Product Description
(2006 Independent Publishers Book Awards: Finalist in Juvenile-Teen-Y/A Non-Fiction category)Give teenagers a chance to say what's on their minds, and you might be surprised by what you hear. That's exactly what Don Meyer, creator of Sibshops and author of VIEWS FROM OUR SHOES did when he invited together a group of 80 teenagers, from all over the United States and abroad, to talk about what it's like to have a brother or sister with special needs. Their unedited words are found in THE SIBLING SLAM BOOK, a brutally honest, non-PC look at the lives, experiences, and opinions of siblings without disabilities.Formatted like the slam books passed around in many junior high and high schools, this one poses a series of 50 personal questions along the lines of:What should we know about you? What do you tell your friends about your sib's disability? What's the weirdest question you have ever been asked about your sib?If you could change one thing about your sib (or your sib's disability) what would it be?What annoys you most about how people treat your sib?THE SIBLING SLAM BOOK doesn't slam in the traditional sense of the word. The tone and point-of-view of the answers are all over the map. Some answers are assuredly positive, a few are strikingly negative, but most reflect the complex and conflicted mix of emotions that come with the territory. Whether they read it cover to cover or sample it at random, teenagers will surely find common ground among these pages and reassurance that they are not alone. It is a book that parents, friends, and counselors can feel confident recommending to any teenager with a brother or sister with a disability. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sibling Slam Book
This book was bought for my daughter because her brother has Autism and sometimes that makes for some interesting living situations. She really liked reading what everyone wrote in the book and it helped her talk more freely about her feelings. The book made her realize she is not alone - which I really liked! It also helped facilitate conversations with our mobile therapist and my kids together.I would highly recommend this book as an escape and a way to start talking to your other "special" child. It is not a "fact" book, but it does work to get the family talking. My kids are 9 (daughter) and 7 (son).

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it as sister AND parent
I grew up with a mentally retarded sister, but in the days when nobody talked about such things and I didn't know anybody else with a disabled sibling. How I wish I had a book such as this when I was young! Throughout the book are reflections of pretty much everything I felt, at all ages. And now, I have a son with Down Syndrome, and I notice his older teen brother picking it up from time to time. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to see everyone else's point of view...
I am one of the 81 siblings who answered the questions in this book, and although it was nearly 3 years ago and I've changed a lot since I wrote my answers, it still feels good to go back through and know I'm not alone. That was really our intended goal behind this book, and it came off well.Seeing that others share the same joys and frustrations of being a sibling as I do will never cease to help me get through the difficult life that we, as siblings of special needs kids, will live forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sib couldn't put it down
My daughter, the twin sister of a boy with Down Syndrome, couldn't put the Sibling Slam down. She quickly got taken up into the many comments and it definitely stimulated a number of good, open conversations between us.A great and important read for a sibling, and a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brutally honest, and brilliant!

An insightful, contemplative, and often humorous read.Slam book editor Don Meyer asks 80 young people what it's really like to have a sibling with special needs. The answers are as varied as the contributors.

This book is a must-read for kids and teens who have a brother or sister with a disability, and is a valuable resource for health and social workers.

Read it and know that you're not the only one who gets scared or frustrated or embarassed. And learn how others work through tough times to become mature, independent and thoughtful young people. ... Read more

Product Description
A culmination of four years of photographing throughout Oregon, Washington and Northern California, Sawdust Mountain focuses on the tenuous relationship between industries reliant upon natural resources and the communities they support. Timber and salmon are the bedrock of a regional Northwest identity, but the environmental impact of these declining industries has been increasingly at odds with the contemporary ideal of sustainability. In this, his second book, Johnson reveals a landscape imbued with an uncertain future--no longer the region of boomtowns built upon the riches of massive old-growth forests. Johnson, a Seattle native, describes his photographs as, "a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings..." Through this poetic approach, Sawdust Mountain records a region affected by historic economic complexities and, by extension, one aspect of our fraught relationship with the environment in the twenty-first century.
Eirik Johnson, born in Seattle in 1974, is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, George Eastman House and Aperture Gallery. His first book, Borderlands, was awarded the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2005. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the incredible book....
"Thanks for the incredible book...best holiday gift I recieved this year."

This was the subject line from the note I got from a friend (architect and well known creative guru) I had recently purchased this book for.I got a copy from another friend when it first came out and found myself fully emerged in the incredible photography for countless hours (no joke!).I rarely if ever write product reviews but this one is worth writing about.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful and thought-provoking
What I love about this book is that it combines a variety of photographic modes -- portraits, landscapes, interiors, close-ups -- and merges them into a unified theme that gives the viewer a powerful message of environmental and economic transformation.I return again and again to the images, some because of their sheer beauty ("Rogue River", "Destruction Island"), others because of their poignancy ("The Sweater Store"), and others because of their compelling subjects (several of Missy, "Storefronts").Whatever your interests, I believe you will find this book a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Context is everything
Eirik Johnson's book serves as an unbiased observation of the inter-workings of the Pacific Northwest forest industry and hits it's mark well.Far from the environmental battlegrounds of Olympia, Seattle, or Washington DC, Eirik's images show life in and around the forest industry in it's raw state: second growth stands awaiting harvesting or the cedar salvager working post harvest to make shakes. The book strikes the balance between what was and what will be; the heyday of the big trees may be gone from the sawmill, the clatter concerning the spotted owl silent (hushed--it seems--by the rain itself), and homes left abandoned (its past inhabitants searching for perhaps sunnier days?), but life does indeed persist.Either in the eggs of the salmon to be or in the earnest pride in the face of the future Star Wars convention attendee, the book lays bare the forest and its inhabitants for what it is; a working ecosystem where consumption, preservation, conservation, and industry readily co-exist, where people live in, not apart from, the ecosystem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Work - Impressive Photos
I recently saw Johnson's work on display at the Henry Art Gallery. His work describes a heretofore undocumented aspect of American history. Shown alongside historic photos of the Pacific Northwest from early pioneer days, one gets a sense of the place in history that Johnson's work claims.

For hundreds of years people have been hunting, gathering, farming, scavenging, building dams, logging, developing housing and even selling Star Wars memorabilia in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. Now someone has documented these people and the land they rely on.A mix between the work of Ansel Adams and Robert Franks, this work is as important as Franks' "The Americans" Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, Expanded Edition and as beautiful as Adams' "California". California: With Classic California Writings

Fans of Raymond Carver's work would enjoy a rainy day with Where I'm Calling From: Selected Stories and Johnson's book as a complement. As to claims that the artist is trying to cash in on some environmental movement, I don't see it.This work brings the reader and viewer a real slice of America that many people would otherwise never get to see due to the inaccessible nature of so much of the Northwest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up!
I've been following the author's work since seeing it in a San Francisco gallery. The work focuses on the physical space - inner-city, urban fringe, or in the case of this book, outer rural environments - which are influenced and altered by the people who live among them.In Sawdust Mountain, the author is able to observe the indelible beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the impacts of the people who - right or wrong - survive from its resources. After ingesting these poignant photos, you are left with a bit of heartache:for the natural wonder of these places, the people who find home in its beauty, and lastly their struggle to simultaneously preserve and live off its resources.

Some of my favorite photos convey the depth and scale of these places:the old abandoned passenger/freight train being enveloped by nature; expansive rivers and timber log jams; the drive-in movie screen reflecting - what? - a setting sun?; and the mildly disturbing star wars paraphernalia sales guy.The photos capture the spectrum...thumbs up. ...
