Product Description
Shorn of the 400-plus images that illustrated the TV tie-in edition, the text of The West is an outstanding work of scholarly synthesis and a feat of storytelling. It is a book that will enthrall readers of popular history as well as students of the North American West. Essays by seven noted writers and historians, complement Geoffrey Wards compelling narrative.Amazon.com Review
In The West, the audiobook companion to the popular PBStelevision series, author and narrator Geoffrey C. Ward brings to lifea grand and sweeping chronology that begins with the arrival of thefirst Europeans and journeys well into the twentieth century. Ward'seven, authoritative voice lends an unbiased air to an often violentand tragic tale. Throughout this rich and untamed history, scores ofnewcomers arrive from around the globe, all in search of a better lifeand the dream of making a home in what proves to be a harsh land.

This colossal story of the discovery and settling of the American westdelves deeply into the tensions between whites and the native peoplesthat they ultimately displaced. Though a great emphasis is placed onthe turbulent relationship between these newcomers and the tragicdestruction of Native American culture, much of the narrative is alsodevoted to the numerous conflicts that evolved between groups ofsettlers. Drawn from hundreds of letters, diaries, memoirs, andjournals, The West is a meticulously researched, grippingchronicle of America's adventurous expansion toward the Pacific. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining
The audiobook version of "The West" is a fast paced excursion through the history of the west from the arrival of European immigrants to the early 20th century. Over 80% of the material, however, concentrates on the 19th century (where the bulk of the action is found). I found this to be a very exciting trip through the history of the region and do recommend it to anyone with an interest in history or the region.

The only flaws in the presentation are relatively minor. The first is the usual flaw found in most writers of western history of the latter part of the 20th century and that is an over-romanticization of the Native American cultures which tends to reduce the conflicts of the settlement of the west to "all Native Americans saintly; all white settlers act like Satan". While they do a good job of covering white atrocities inflicted on the Native Americans (i.e. the Sand Creek Massacre, the war against the Nez Perce, the routine violation of treaties by the government, etc.)the authors do gloss over the often violent history the Native American tribes had with each other as well as totally ignoring the barbaric aspects of some tribal cultures of the west. Still, on balance, they are far more objective in this area than the majority of western writers. Their is also an almost complete silence on the roll of religion in the settlement of the west. Also it is dissapointing that Alaska and Hawaii were completely excluded from coverage in the audiobook. It is also dissapointing that the book ends in the very early 20th century leaving out great 20th century events in the west such as the oil booms, the dust bowl, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the rise of tourism in the west.

Still, "The West" is an enjoyable listen, and isprobably best listened to while driving in your car through the west.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful overview of the Western Expansion
I have read this title in Hardback and it was wonderful. The personal stories of fate, tradegy and triumph as the European immigrants settle on Native American lands are excellently written.

The story actually starts earlier than most would think - in the 1600s as the Spanish explore what is now New Mexico and Texas, and there are some misunderstandings between them and the Native Americans.Throughout the book, there are narratives following a person or a group of people and their journeys to the West.

My favorite narratives are the expansion of U. S. citizens to Texas, and the journey of the Mormons to Utah.I knew some the of the facts, however, they were vividly and poignantly written in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic naval memoir from WW2.
Within a short time of starting this book I felt that the life of anyone who ever met this particular author could only have been enriched by the experience - if only because everything seems to have happened to this man.

Having joined the Royal Navy in 1934, he was torpedoed on HMS Nelson, joined HMS Prince of Wales before she was commissioned - and was still serving on that great ship when she was lost to Japanese air attack 3 days after Pearl Harbour, was rescued and returned to Singapore just in time for the Japanese invasion and became one of the very few to successfully escape from his Japanese captors by completing an epic sea voyage by small craft all the way to Ceylon - during which time he was shipwrecked again! After service on board HMS Bermuda - which included supporting the Allied landings in North Africa in addition to dreaded Arctic convoys, it was back to the far East for service on two Aircraft Carriers for duty as Flight Deck Officer and then Crash Officer. This man simply survived it all, including 2 Kamikaze attacks and a water spout I almost forgot to mention.

And this is his story. It is an incredible story and one which will not disappoint the reader.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're interested in Force Z, get this book.
This book is an entirely conventional account of the wartime career of a British junior officer, following him from pre-war days on a battleship to carrier warfare against Japan in August 1945.

By far the most notable of the vessels on which he served, however, was the battleship Prince of Wales. It is the account of the circumstances surrounding her loss, and Brooke's subsequent escape from the Japanese that provides the principal point of interest in this book. His description of Force Z's fatal mission is gripping, and he provides a powerful account of the atmosphere on board ship as she vainly battled against waves of Mitsubishis, was quickly crippled, leaving her command to face a nightmare tactical situation as further attacks developed.

Following some desperate operations as the Japanese advanced through Malaya and things began to collapse in Singapore, Brooke was eventually chosen to escape and continue the war in other theatres.

Once again, his account of this episode makes for a gripping read; it also provides us with a timely reminder of how slender the line is between success and failure in war, for his group came within an ace of being captured by Japanese ships, having mistakenly -- and unsuccessfully -- tried to attract their attention.

Almost inevitably what follows is rather an anticlimax, and does not make for particularly interesting reading. In short then, this is not a classic, but is required reading for anyone interested in the fate of Force Z and the loss of Singapore.

Several billion people are at daily risk of life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as malaria, trypanosomiasis and dengue. This volume describes the way in which the causal pathogens of such diseases interact with the vectors that transmit them, detailing the biological adaptations that enable pathogens to live with their vectors and, in some circumstances, to control them. This knowledge has led to novel preventative strategies in the form of antibiotics and new vaccines which are targeted not at the pathogen itself but at its specific vector. ... Read more

Product Description
The period between 300-600 AD saw huge changes: the Graeco-Roman city-state was first transformed, then eclipsed; much of the Roman Empire broke up and was reconfigured; new Barbarian kingdoms emerged in the Roman West. Above all, religious culture moved from polytheistic to monotheistic. Here, twenty papers by international scholars explore how group identities were established against this shifting background. Separate sections treat the Latin-speaking West, the Greek East, and the age of Justinian. Themes include religious conversion, Roman law in the Barbarian West, problems of Jewish identity, and what, in Late Antiquity, it meant to be Roman. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars useful
Found some pretty useful info that isn't easily discovered...
For e.g. - The sequence in which ASP.NET looks through the collection of the REQUEST object (query string, form, cookie, client cert, server vars).
Also - interesting take on limiting usage of session objects.
I liked the treatment on connection pooling and caching practices as well.
Overall - I would summarize it as 'contains useful info that may not be easily found elsewhere....' ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Evil Twin hidden within us?
This book far surpassed the movie.Stephen King's writing can be intense, but listening to it in my car to and from work was just the proper amount of time and break. The Sparrows and the end were a magnificent touch.I have read of such cases where a twin embryo is absorbed by the other twin. The Stephen King touch of developing this into a living entity here but not here is phenomenal. The knowing of each other's twin keeps the reader in suspense. The mystery begins with a physical resurrection of a character that isn't truly alive in the sense of a carbon based unit. The character forms into a physical representation of a character of Thad Beaumont's books, but really is the evil twin of Thad Beaumont. The mysterious stranger appears and begins a killing spree that is connected in every respect from fingerprints, blood type, DNA, and voice prints to Thad Beaumont. When the killing ceases, the entity focuses on Thad Beaumont and threatens his wife and twin children Wendy and William.George Starke, the character wants Thad Beaumont's life and appears to be getting it.Only the limited control of the psychic connection of the sparrows could save Thad's life and world. The ending is fantastic and you can never look at a sparrow in the same way again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but Kindle edition is terrible
"Dose" = "Close." "Comer" = Corner. These are just a couple of the things you will have to figure out if you choose to read this book on Kindle. I love this book (it's my favorite King, in fact, which is why I purchased this Kindle copy in ADDITION to my battered paperback and my pristine hardcover signed first edition), but there's just no excuse for this. I've had a Kindle for over two years, and haven't experienced these problems with any other books. I hope future King books I buy for Kindle aren't like this, otherwise I may just end up re-reading my paperbacks instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very below average King novel
Most SK novels grab me in the beginning few paragraphs. This one didn't and I struggled to keep my attention to it the entire way through. The story was creepy (as most of King's work is) but overall not as engaging as many other King books I've read. I'd recomment readers new to Stephen King avoid this one early on or you might get a sour taste of this great author.

4-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE SPELLING ERRORS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK
First of all, the book was fine.Typical King.In fact, I own the hard cover and wanted a copy for my Kindle. The spelling errors are the worst I have ever seen.It is so distracting it makes the book hard to read. If I have to read "close" writtenas "dose" one more time I will scream.I don't think there is a page that is free of these annoying errors.Kindle, get a proof reader!!!

Product Description
This isthe first of four volumes of the writings of one of this century's most remarkable and prolific thinkers.Together with Jock Shepherd, his co-student at the Architectural Association, Geoffrey Jellicoe published his first book in 1925. In the literature on landscape architecture, Italian Gardens of the Renaissance has become the pivotal work and finest appraisal on the subject. To the original photographs of Jock Shepherd's drawings, Jellicoe has now added a completely new text. InAn Italian Study , his reassessment of his generative trip to Italy taken almost seventy years ago, he sets out to assess the way in which Shepherd's remarkable drawings interpret the spirit of villa and garden. As a sequel toItalian Gardens of the Renaissance , in 1932 Jellicoe publishedBaroque Gardens of Austria . Since so little has been written on the subject, and since this work has been long out of print, it is produced here in its entirety. It paints a fascinating picture of the great buildings and ...
