Product Description
Syncopated Rhythms showcases an outstanding collection assembled by jazz impresario George Wein and his wife Joyce that represents an excellent survey of the accomplishments of African American artists of the last century. Included are both figurative and abstract works, many with the theme of music and musicians.

The book illustrates paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and a painted story quilt. The works were done in the late 1920s through the 1990s and the collection is particularly strong in works of the 1940s to the 1970s. Thirty-five artists are represented, among them Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Miles Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, and Augusta Savage. ... Read more

Product Description
The poet Stefan George (1868-1933) was one of the most important cultural figures in modern Germany. His poetry, in its originality and impact, has been ranked with that of Goethe, Hölderlin, or Rilke. Yet George's reach extended far beyond the sphere of literature. During his last three decades, he attracted a circle of disciples who subscribed to his homoerotic and aestheticist vision of life and sought to transform it into reality. The works and thought of the circle profoundly affected the intellectual and cultural attitudes of Germany's educated middle class from the beginning of the twentieth century, and are thus crucial to Germany's cultural and intellectual history. The transition from the aestheticist, cosmopolitan values the circle embraced in the early 1900s to the more explicitly political and patriotic views many of its members espoused during the Weimar Republic both conditioned and reflected a momentous transformation in German thought. The intersection of culture and politics in the George Circle has received little attention in English-language scholarship until now. This volume includes contributions from major scholars in both English- and German-speaking countries. Its audience includes scholars and students of German languages and literature, German history, and reception of the classics, among other fields. Contributors: Adam Bisno, Richard Faber, Rüdiger Görner, Peter Hoffmann, Thomas Karlauf, Melissa S. Lane, Robert E. Lerner, David Midgley, Robert E. Norton, Ray Ockenden, Ute Oelmann, Martin A. Product Description
On Valentine's Day 2007, in a suburb of Detroit, stay-at-home dad Stephen Grant filed a missing person's report with the local sheriff. Grant's wife Tara had disappeared five days earlier. He'd been searching for her ever since - or so he claimed. Over the next two weeks, police questioned Grant. He lashed out, accusing them of harassment, pleading his innocence in television interviews. He swore that his wife, a successful businesswoman, had abandoned him and their children. Then the police made a gruesome discovery...After his arrest, Grant confessed to strangling his wife and cutting her body into fourteen pieces while the children slept. "Detroit News" reporter George Hunter interviewed Grant several times, learning shocking details of his relationship with Tara. This chilling account goes inside the twisted mind of a husband who snapped - and a marriage that ended in bloody carnage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
This was a book I could hardly put down. It was well written and fast shipping. You won't be disappointed. What a monster. I pray for Tara's family and children. Stephen Grant will have many years to think about this horrible act he committed, hopefully he'll never get out of prison.

2-0 out of 5 stars Typical Onesided Detroit Media Coverage
I live in the Metro Detroit area as a few others have mentionedhere also. I watch the entire case through the one sided Detroit media that made this murder look more like a Judge Judy case then anything.

This book was totally one sided as it made the victim into a hero. This seems to be the case in the last several years as any attractive female automatically gets star status throughout the nation. NOt sure if its just me but the media lately has been trying to portray all males to be monsters. In this case, Mr Grant was a monster but the media did a great job of covering up his wife Taras past as she seemed to be the abuser and the dominator. This of course does not justify what Steven did to her.

In the end, anyone that reads this book that has a fair mind will see that it did nothing but favortize Tara because she was a "Working Mom". Why not just tell the story and let others make their own judgement??

The Detroit media did nothing but turn this story into a carnival act by demonizing him when in fact, the police could have simply let him die in the fridigid cold. He was just minutes from slipping into hypothermia. Instead, they rescued him like they were a bunch of heros. WHY??

This book didnt even come close to "In Cold Blood". Not even in the same league!

2-0 out of 5 stars boring book...
hard to think of a book about a murder as boring but this one is. It is mostly transcripts of the confession and the trial and just nothing very interesting. Neither victim nor killer are very sympathetic people even before the crime, as portrayed. Also the murder itself was fairly commonplace as such crimes go (not saying that any murder is less terrible than another...) but the fact that he dismembered the body in order to hide it, is what the sensationlists (and journalists) loved best...He comes off as stupid, inept and dim-witted, not exactly a hardened criminal and I do not think that a history of domestic abuse was ever proved. If anything, Tara's journal indicates she was the one who picked on her husband. I think a fight got out of hand. Bad enough, but not to explain the way the book cover descibes it as "a murderous rage"and a "sharp blade" as though he slashed her to death...just a typical instant book from journalists on a crime that for a while was in national media...

5-0 out of 5 stars A can't put down page turner
I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. I read a lot of true crime books and this rates among the top, with "In cold blood" and "Helter Skelter".

5-0 out of 5 stars You wont read a better true crime novel than this one this year!
One of the best true crime books I have read in awhile.I started reading this book having some assumptions and expectations, these were quickly dispelled. The authors used a very easy to read narrative style at the beginning of the book and then built on this style as they progressed through the book.I found myself having a different opinion of the main characters in this book by the end of the story.I found myself having empathy and understanding for one of the main protagonists in this book and that surprised me.The authors journalistic and detached style (Just the facts approach to what happened) helped me come to my own conclusions about what I feel really happened, and this is what was important to me.This is a thinking persons true crime book, you will not be disappointed! ... Math in a Cultural Context: Lessons Learned from Yup'ik Eskimo Elders is the result of a long-term collaboration. These supplemental math modules for grades 1-6 bridge the unique knowledge of Yup'ik Elders with school-based mathematics. This series challenges students to communicate and think mathematically as they solve problems. Problems and inquiry-oriented, and the problems are constructed so that the possibilities are constrained and the students can understand mathematical relationships, properties of geometrical shapes, develop place value understanding, state conjuctures, and provide proofs. The curriculum taps into students' creative, practical, and analytical thinking. Our classroom-based research strongly suggests that students engaged in this curriculum can develop deeper mathematical understandings than students who engage with more procedure-oriented paper and pencil curriculumStar Navigation: Exploration into Angles and Measurement is intended for students in Grade 6 ... Product Description

In the opening chapter of her 1866 novel ‘Felix Holt’, George Eliot tells her readers that the 'vibrations that make human agonies are often a mere whisper in the roar of hurrying existence'. ‘George Eliot’s Grammar of Being’ is developed from the idea that George Eliot wanted to produce these vibrations within her novels, not just at the level of story and character, but also at the level of language. She was a novelist who wanted the public to read her sentences almost as carefully as she wrote them—to make her readers find and subconsciously respond to those places in the prose where the syntax itself delivers subtle shocks to the system 'beneath' context. Relying heavily on examination of original manuscripts and page proofs, this book shows how George Eliot’s is a carefully evolved grammar where the vibrations are purposefully created and then enhanced through active revision. Drawing on the influence of Victorian psychological and neuro-physiological theory, as well as study of the manuscripts and writing processes of other Victorian novelists, the book shows how the sentences within a novel can become a kind of nervous system to the narrative, thus highlighting the integral role that language plays in the inspiration of our sympathy as readers.
