Excerpt: Eric Scott Hinske (born August 5, 1977, in Menasha, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball player for the Atlanta Braves. Hinske has spent time at the major league level with the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates, and New York Yankees playing third base, first base, left field, and right field. He is listed at 6'2", 235 pounds. He has played three times in the World Series, losing with the Rays in 2008 and winning with the Red Sox in 2007 and Yankees in 2009. Eric played for Menasha High School under the coach of Terry Wittmann, where he broke many hitting records. After playing for the University of Arkansas, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 1998 amateur draft. In March 2001, Hinske was traded to the Oakland Athletics for Miguel Cairo. On December 7, 2001, Toronto Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi acquired Hinske and reliever Justin Miller from the Athletics for Billy Koch, a move designed to bring youth and vitality to the team. Hinske was inserted in the everyday line-up in 2002, playing third base, and was a key contributor for the team, hitting predominantly in the second spot in the line-up. While criticized early for his sometimes shoddy defense, Hinske made up for his lapses with his bat, hitting 24 home runs, knocking in 84 runs, and scoring 99 runs. He also led all AL third basemen in errors, with 22. He received wide recognition, winning both the MLB Rookie of the Year and The Sporting News Rookie of the Year awards. Set in the romantic world of Victorian London, Selene of the Spirits is the story of a beautiful young woman with psychic powers who acquires sudden fame as a medium in the spiritualist circles of the day. Just as precipitous is Selene fall from grace after the revelation of her love affair with a renowned scientist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric, thoughtful and witty
Flannery O'Connor award-winner Pritchard mixes the academic's reserve with the artist's probing of character and the enthusiast's flights of fancy in this Victorian novel. Her research, as described in an afterward, combines all three with a generous dose of mystical coincidence.

Inspired by the love affair between a married scientist and his subject, psychic Selene Cook, the story centers on Selene's awakening powers. Daughter of a vulgar, ambitious, humorless woman and a lazy, sadsack father, Selene hears voices, suffers trances and reads unhappy futures in the faces of strangers.

The shape of her life is cast the day she loses her teaching position, consequently disrupting the education of her younger, plainer sister Octavia, whose heartfelt ambition focuses on intellectual recognition. Selene, too self absorbed to understand Octavia's deep resentment, follows her voices to a London spiritualist and finds solace in the structure and artifice of training to be a parlor medium.

A success on the séance circuit, Selene attracts the attention of a "spiritualist investigator" who exposes her most spectacular "manifestation" as a fraud. With the loss of her reputation and patron, Selene implores a respectable scientist, William Herapath, to authenticate her powers.

Herapath, captivated by Selene's more physical attributes but in financial thrall to his peculiar wife (who is caught up in the fad for taxidermy), conducts their love affair with a mixture of passion, venality and cowardice. It can only end badly, with Selene, pregnant and alone, exiled to rural Wales. Here she discovers a fleeting peace in the reawakening of her spiritual side, although unable to break the cycle of earthly tragedies and betrayals, culminating in the sad end revealed in the book's prologue.

Pritchard's characters are vivid, their humanity timeless, their attitudes and actions shaped by the proprieties of their time. Her unobtrusive research (Victorian "scientific" methods, the occult, taxidermy) shows in the details. The writing is elegant, with touches of dry comedy.

There is a feeling of distance, of biography, reinforced by the use of Selene's diary entries, letters and occult newspaper accounts. While this subverts suspense, it lends authenticity to the accountand maintains its aura of mysticism. Thoughtful, well-written and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrancing page turner
Melissa Pritchard continues to amaze me with her beautiful use of the English language, enticing plot line, realistic characters, and beautiful poignancy. As with her former works, she captures the reader instantly, andwill not let go, until long after you read the last page. Along with thisbok, I strongly reccomend her novel entitled "Phoenix", a storyof a girls youth on the road. Her books read like movie scripts, completewith complex characters and visual illustration that comes to life withinher written words. I believe her to be one of the foremost authors in theworld right now, and implore you to discover her fascinating world, thattakes you all the way from the brightest light, to unimaginable darkness. Two thumbs up! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Love Story Taught on the Frontier of Ohio
I have read with interest about Alonzo and Melissa, since they are my ancestors. They are my great great grand aunt and uncle.
Named by my great great grandmother and father, Elias and Julia Ann Heffner MILLS of Dayton, Montgomery Co, Ohio. They were married there in 1850 and first came Melissa and then came Alonzo to their frontier family.I have always been curious as to how they came to be named. Now from this wonderful love story I have found the answer.Possibly Julia and Elias had a similar courtship and they too finally were allowed to wed. I will never know at this point in time, unless more family information comes to light.I read the story on the Isaac Mitchell website, seeing that it was his love story that was published first in the newspaper.I am so happy to have found their names and the basis of the story. ...
