Excerpt: Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, usually shortened to Tenzin Gyatso (born Lhamo Döndrub, 6 July 1935) is the 14th Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader revered among the people of Tibet. He is the head of the government-in-exile based in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India. Tibetans traditionally believe him to be the reincarnation of his predecessors. The Dalai Lama was born fifth of seven children to a farming family in the village of Taktser. His first language was, in his own words, "a broken Xining language which was (a dialect of) the Chinese language" as his family did not speak the regional Amdo dialect. He was proclaimed the tulku or rebirth of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. In 1950 the army of the People's Republic of China invaded the region. One month later, on 17 November 1950, he was enthroned formally as Dalai Lama: at the age of fifteen, he became the region's most important spiritual leader and political ruler. In 1951 the Chinese military pressured the Dalai Lama to ratify a seventeen-point agreement which permitted the People's Republic of China to take control of Tibet. He fled through the mountains to India soon after...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20238168 ... Read more

Product Description
The definitive book on the life of the legendary photographer Herb Ritts, with never-before-seen images and interviews with his closest confidants. At the time of his death in 2002, Herb Ritts was among the most celebrated photographers in celebrity portraiture, fashion, and music videos. During a career that spanned nearly thirty years, he was virtually in a league of his own in terms of style and productivity. Ritts was Hollywood royalty, as were his closest friends and the subjects he photographed. The Golden Hour reveals for the first time the personal aspects of Ritts’s world, work, and legacy. The book includes many never-before-seen photographs and scores of interviews from business associates, curators, staff, lovers, and family, such as Cindy Crawford, Elton John, Anna Wintour, Madonna, Calvin Klein, and Christopher Buckley (Ritts’s college roommate). The book includes images from Ritts’s personal archive—behind the scenes at photo shoots, parties, travels, intimate portraits, and moments with friends—along with notes and contact sheets that show how ideas became his best-known iconic images. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars NOT SURE WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS BOOK
This is a very, very personal window into Mr. Ritts' family and friends. Pages upon pages of statements and memories.Of course we can only imagine there was a beautiful man behind the beauty he created. But in life, Mr. Ritts chose to communicate with his images. I find this book gratuitous and sadly voyeuristic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tiempo de Titanes
Answering a post on this review I did a raw traslation to English. Not my native language, so I do applogize already because of the numerouses mistakes I must have done. Raw Translation at the end of the Spanish version.

English (Raw translation)

Last Saturday, I published in YO Dona Magazine -Spain- a cover story on the Herb Ritts's biography written by Charles Churchward. I've always felt a great admiration for Churchward first art director and later as design director. In a world that reproduces itself and then disappear on a daily-weekly-monthly basis, the ability of some magazines to create memorable images is (was?) an essential element for creating the memory of an era. In that effort, I think the work of who was the visual pilot of two of the most prestigious magazine Condé Nast -Vanity Fair and, then, Vogue-, is unmatched among his contemporaries. I have to confess that I feel often overwhelmed but puzzling information and what it seems to me chaotic layouts where there is no a real narrative structure. Not even an attempt. The narrative and application of film techniques and, of course, techniques present in the novel-genre always gave me a feeling of surprise that I felt I had to turn the page looking for a new encounter.
To read The Golden Hour is, undoubtedly, to face the meta-literature of who decides to do a coral biography in which the narrator is not present but in the selection of quotations. That is something. But words, each and every one of them, are among others, the real actors of the plot, bringing in the multiperspectivism that Spanish philosopher Ortega, stated was the only way to approach reality. As it said Lynn Cooke, deputy director of the Reina Sofía Museum, in Madrid, when I questioned her in a recent interview. "we now know that there is not such a thing as a unique account of history." And it's true. But history, I think it always takes the form of narrative account. Multiple, but intelligible or not would be historic.
Churchward's passion for biographies comes from afar. He has been able to create this story based on chapters where everything revolves about an axis that create moments where a life begins to make sense ... -chapter 7 on the mother-.
Each and every one of the words/"quotes" contained in the book heva its own weight, a weight that is carefully balanced with the weight of other words and their context by the author. And then, suddenly, is all about "talent" about "that" thing, is the momento when you get down the book, and stop reading because you are getting it, you begging to understand that you are readingsomething that is impossible to put into words, and jus proceeds to the vital ending. Such an outcome is known from the beginning, all posthumous biography is the Chronicle of a Death Foretold, so it is terrifying the ferocity with which death appears on the scene in The Golden Hour, a feverish greed is already announced in the title. No golden hour without the essence of night in itself. Of course it has a lot of musicality this way of storytelling, mastering it to maintain a pace, to unleash the climax and back to a tie to keep things in order. To keep things alive until life it is not in the book.
The photos in the book are, of course, great. But scary is that there was that time when photographers, editors, art directors and celebrities created a world that fed on each of its parts. Nothing can be understood if not for its circumstances and circumstance, in The Golden Hour is, the time that produced the magazines we learned to love and desire. Time of the Titans difficult to be repeated or republished. Except, of course, in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Herb Ritts: The Golden Hour - Charles Churchward (Rizzoil)
Who didn't love Herb Ritts? The Brentwood boy cum fashion photographer to the stars was loved and revered by everyone he came in contact with before his untimely passing, the day after Christmas in 2002.

In this, the first published book on the subject in the new millennium, Ritts associate (and former Vogue and Vanity Fair art director) Charles Churchward has painstakingly assembled both an oral and photographic history covering not just the career, but the life of his beloved friend. In assembling detailed recollections from a large cadre of friends - songwriter Bruce Roberts, family friend Bobby Shriver, photographer Annie Liebowitz and numerous others - Churchward has succeeded in creating a vivid verbal portrait of Ritts' passionista existence literally from inception to denouement. From his early boyhood years growing up in a family whose father ran a furniture company and a commanding, interior designer mother, to his early break shooting with his then twenty-something buddy Richard Gere, to an illustrious career creating trademark sessions with Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Madonna and many more, the evolution of both the Ritts lifestyle and photographic style is on display for all to see.

Given an already ample number of photo books by Ritts, it is refreshing to see the evolution of the life story; the story of the boy turned man, the development of a fascination that began with a Brownie camera on Catalina vacations and turned into a career of global celebrity in its own right, the unrelenting personality and the evolving issues surrounding his own sexuality, the story of a man who had completed the first phase of his luminous career and was beginning phase two (his Africa expedition being the gateway to a new Ritts style) when he was caught short by an untimely death.

Inspired by his mentor Bruce Weber, Ritts was one of the few photographers who treated men and African-Americans the same way women were treated for years - in sensual and provocative images that had here-to-fore been barely explored. Though he never quite appeared to achieve the ultimate peak of his predecessors in the art world (Newton, Steglitz, Ed Weston) Ritts was well on his way at the time of his passing. The extensive personal recollections of those who knew him best create a sunlit window into the man behind the pictures and this collection serves as a fitting tribute to the man that brought the 80's and 90's worlds of fashion and art into sharp focus. ...
