5-0 out of 5 stars Great edition - delightful and charming!
Great edition - delightful and charming! This is a funny play!!!I'm nuts about Wilde, and have the good fortune to watch this play nearby where I live, it reminded me to read it again, and I ordered this version from Amazon as part of a larger Wilde order, (I think I bought all his works!).

There is no sense writing about this fantastic play - its so funny, the satire is right on the mark, the wit still as fresh today as it was when first written, I just wanted to say that this is a very good edition, and I especially enjoyed the cover photo of Wilde looking the way we all remember him.

PS if you have the chance see his grave stone in Paris.Beautiful Art Deco!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pefect Edition!
I'm not going to add much in the review sense, just mention to those who were unhappy with their kindle book, that is is the real, full, hard copy, and a beautiful edition it is!

Wilde is wonderful, and this is one of his best plays.I've seen it a few times, but never tire of reading it. The wit, the barbs, are timeless!

Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is 5 pages long; don't bother
As much as it pains me to give a Wilde play one star, it had to be done. The version I downloaded (and I tried twice) is only 5 pages long, and ends immediately after the cast of characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lady Vandermere's Fan
I was very satisfied with this product and the speed with which it was delivered.I gave it as a Christmas gift to my grandson, who is a student at NYU and who requested it for Christmas.I was very happy with my purchase!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cecil Graham , the cynical hero
Melodramatics from Lady Windermere. Mrs. Erlynne and Lord Windermere meeting but incomprehensibly deaf to the rumors about them. Yes, this is not Oscar Wilde's best play but, oh, the zingers he does get in, namely through Cecil Graham. Example: "Well, there's nothing in the world like the devotion of a married woman. It's a thing no married man knows anything about." Read it for the pithy lines. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 *Ms. Frizzle Leads the Way
A fun book in the "Magic School Bus" series, this is a fact- and pun-filled account of Ms. Frizzle's students (and parents) going on a field trip to learn more about bats. Some of the kids are a little nervous at first: Ralphie believes that bats are really vampires! The field trip shows otherwise, as bat-facts are presented in a creative and interesting manner.

The famous bus does do some magic here: Turning into a "bat bus" to demonstrate echolocation, and then turning the children into bats (temporarily!) so they can learn about bat food, bat predators, bat flight speed, and general "hanging around (upside down from the branches of a tree)." Facts replace suspicion (Is Ms. Frizzle herself a vampire?Did she turn the parents into vampires?), and the story ends with yet another pun.(Be your own judge about whether this story might be too frightening for the very young). With bright, colorful (but not extraordinary) illustrations on each one of the story's 28 pages, and two pages with letters about bats and bat facts. Probably not as exciting as Batman, but fans of "The Magic School Bus" and nature facts should love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bats presented in a myth vs reality light
We live near the famous Carlsbad Caverns, so we like books that show the positive aspects of bats. This book does a good job of showing what the myths are and the refutations of those myths.
It's a great way to practice Spanish or to pick up some new vocabulary.
The illustrations are interesting, the storyline is fun, and the science is accurate.
I enjoy this book quite a bit and love that it's available in Spanish. ... Read more

15. It Pays To Remain An Optimist: When The Going Gets A Little Tough

Product Description
A follow-up on J.D.'s 1stbook, IT PAYS TO BE AN OPTIMIST. When she sells her wholefood store to pursue her artistic dreams, the author is told by a spirit guide: It is right for you to be free, to do what you really want to do. And if you just move forward and trust, you will automatically be given the means to survive." And yet, seen from a superficial perspective, the going soon gets rather tough: she loses her home; ends up sharing an apartment with the flatmate from hell; gets made redundant from her night job that is supposed to pay the bills while she is writing comedy screenplays; somewhere along the line she finds herself stranded in France with no money to pay her rent. Not one to be easily discouraged she tries a few unconventional ways to earn her keep.Told with her usual humour and optimistic slant, Joanna's upbeat real-life tale demonstrates that it sure pays to remain an optimist when the going gets a little tough (or even when it seems to get mega-tough). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cynics Beware!
We all know lots of people who claim to be optimists, but I'm sure most of them could take lessons in the attribute from Joanna Dubois.

In her easy-going, conversational style of writing, she tells us of her roller coaster life, in which her irrepressible sense of humor and trust in her own destiny carry her through the 'downs', while her belief that good begets good ensures that she shares the 'ups' with those who most deserve the enduring generosity of her spirit.

A light at the end of the tunnel for pessimists and a master class for would-be optimists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspirational
Reading this book, the second one in the 'Optimist' series, feels like a delightful meandering through Europe.Admittedly we spend some time in Paris, Eastbourne and in Calais, we are appalled by the behaviour of some of the neighbours, but we make frequent forays back in Paris following Joanna's artistic inspiration for her photographic project. The love of the city shines through every line.

We also visit Monet's garden, Versailles, learn about some out-of-the-way tea-room and divine wholefood bakery in Bruges and cycle in Holland with a bunch of not-so-youngs.

We laugh a lot, but also feel terribly sad, and after having followed Joanna through her hilarious and scary adventures, we cannot help but fervently wish her every possible success in following her path. ... Read more

Product Description

A vibrant and imaginative picture book celebrating the joy of getting all the way through a book -- by yourself!

Amazon.com Review
The adventure of reading takes on a whole new meaning in a nutty little book by award-winning creators Robert Burleigh (Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth) and Dan Yaccarino (So Big!). In this unusual and entertaining story, a boy is thrilled to be making his way through the very book readers are reading. As each page turns, we see the exuberant fellow embrace whatever comes his way: a page like a wall ("So what! I'll hoist my ladder and climb"); a page like a meadow ("I'll stroll and take my time"); a thick, dark wood; a cave ("I'll tighten up my belt a bit-- / and tell myself: Be brave"). Along the way he encounters plenty of compadres: a bookish bear, a puckish monkey, a ravenous goat (who manages to munch his way through several pages), a cowboy ostrich (complete with boots and a 10-gallon--at least--hat), and more. All the thrill and mystery of reading is explored, with a full spectrum of emotions, seasons, and characters.

Kids will be delighted to find someone as excited about reading as they are. They'll see themselves in our hero when no sooner does he celebrate getting through his book all by himself than he decides to "walk around to the front of the book" and start over! Clever illustrations and Seuss-style rhymes will quickly make this one a favorite. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Going through this book because of illustration
It's beautifully illustrated however no particular theme within. It's more likely good for baby-preschooler.

There was a boy leading a gang of animals appeared one by one and going thru the book.Walking thru seasons, day & night, up and down till the end.I'd say, toddlers could learn many action verbs and names of those funny featured animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Joys of Reading.....
As our narrator tells us, "I love going through this book./Just watch me do it./No matter how long it takes,/I'm going all the way through it!And with an invitation like that, how can you resist turning the page and joining him and his animal friends. Our young guide teaches us that the pages of a book are like doors, each taking us somewhere new.We travel through a meadow, a forest and a cave.We play in autumn leaves, raft down a river in summer and play in the snow in winter. We see the starry sky, new people, places and things and when we're through and finished reading, we can catch our collective breaths and walk around to the front of the book and read it with him all over again..... Robert Burleigh has written a very creative and innovative introduction to the joys of reading as he demonstrates so cleverly that you can go anywhere, do anything and be anyone when you read a book. His light, simple joyful text, told in rhyme, is complemented by award winning artist, Dan Yaccarino's vibrant, imaginative, humorous illustrations.I Love Going Through This Book is perfect for early readers and a wonderful read aloud story youngsters 3-7 will want to hear again and again. ... Product Description
On the heels of their Caldecott Medal-winning Smoky Night, Eve Bunting and David Diaz have created a dazzling new picture book that glows with holiday joy and the spirit of Mexico.Carlos and his family are going home for Christmas—across the border from California to Mexico.Mama and Papa are excited, but Carlos and his sisters are not so sure.To them, California is home now, even though they were born in Mexico. But as the family drives to their hometown through festive villages and sun-kissed landscapes, Carlos and his sisters discover there’s magic in their roots and that—whether in Mexico or California—home is where the heart is:with one’s family.

Amazon.com Review
With its remarkable illustrations and its affectionateportrait of a migrant family, Eve Bunting's latest book is ajewel. Carlos, his parents, and his sisters visit the family villagein Mexico. Mama and Papa are very excited, but the kids don't knowwhat all the fuss is about. If they really love Mexico, what could bethe point of leaving for America just for "opportunities"?

As they watch their parents with the family, and sneak a peek at thetwo of them dancing in the moonlight to a song only they can hear,Carlos understands. "They love it here because it's home. Theyhave left home for us." With clarity, warmth, and very few words,Bunting has explained those ever-new American dreamers to yet anothergeneration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Going Home, by Eve Bunting
As a grandfather, I have been impressed with many of the books which Eve Bunting, working with a variety of illustrators, has created for children. "Going Home" is one of these. With good drawings, and a simple, touching story, it is appropriate for almost any age.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Story About Mexican-Americans Going Home
The country where you were born rarely stops being home.Especially if you lived there for very long. This book highlights a family from the United States whose parents come from Mexico. The parents still feel very strongly that Mexico is home though they are firmly planted in the US.The kids are very uncomfortable with the knowledge. They prefer to speak English and feel that the US is home. What is this place their parents call home? What if they want to stay there? How do their parents really about about home in the US which the kids consider home? It's a confusing dilemma for kids and parents have to have mixed feelings too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for children and adults
Eve Bunting's books have a wisdom that transcends their simple stories. As an ESL teacher and a teacher in classes with immigrant students, I have often shared this book with middle school students and adults. In a brief and poetic narrative, it tells the universal story of parents sacrificing so their children will have a better life, through the eyes of a child. The adults in my ESL classes love it and take it home to read to their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eve Bunting and David Diaz do it again!
Eve Bunting takes her readers on journey with a Mexican family going home for Christmas. The text she uses is elegantly written.Through the feelings expressed by Carlos and his family you get a real sense of the Mexican culture and the importance of family.David Diaz's illustrations lead you into the journey with Carlos and his family. With the use of collaged background and inset illustrations the pages come alive. The text of Bunting and the illustrations of Diaz give you the sense of being there. This is a book that a child of any age would enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is very touching...it sensitively portrays the sacrafices Mexican immigrants have to make to move to America for their children to have a better life. Very well done themes of parental love, long car trips, the sadness of leaving one's home country, sibling realtionships, husbandand wife being romantic (tasteful and age-appropriate), and a child'sgrowing understanding of the complexities of life. Buy and read it to everychild (and adult) you know. ... Read more
