The Poe Killings…

A string of homicides is mirroring the author's macabre stories.

And Genevieve O'Brien's mother is next.

Genevieve knows all about nightmares. She herself survived two months as a psychopath's prisoner. And now this new menace stalks the city. Spooked by the bizarre slayings, she turns to P.I. Joe Connolly, her past rescuer, friend and…hopefully something more, if he would just quit avoiding her.

At first Joe isn't even sure there is a case. But the body count rises, and it's clear that a twisted killer is on the loose. Even more unsettling is the guidance he starts receiving from beyond the grave. People he knows to be dead are appearing, offering him clues and leads, and warning of some terrible danger ahead.

But can even the spirits stay the hand of a madman bent on murder? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Tell tale ghost...
this was a good book, i enjoyed the interaction of the ghosts with the living, but when everyone starts hearing ghosts it gets a little far fetched.
Like the interaction between the charactors and was interested in this enough to find the former book leading up to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put THE DEATH DEALER on your have-to-read list
One might be forgiven for thinking, if only for a moment, that "Heather Graham" is the collective name for the occupants of a small hamlet in Illinois (population 700). First there are the books. Over 100 of them --- each different, each intriguing, each very well done, indeed. Then there are the public appearances, the generosity of time and spirit displayed at writers' workshops (not to mention the invaluable advice), and the works of mercy and kindness that she quietly performs for their own sake. I assure you, however, that all of this is done by one person --- Heather Graham. She does all of this and somehow finds time for regular sleep. Usually during the second weekend in February.

As often happens, Graham is a very nice person who writes surprisingly scary books. Which brings us to THE DEATH DEALER, a sequel to 2007's THE DEAD ROOM. Impossible as it may seem, this latest novel is even better, bringing a number of characters back from THE DEAD ROOM while changing the focus a bit and keeping things new.

Most of us who love mystery and thriller novels cut our teeth on the work of Edgar Allan Poe; THE DEATH DEALER pays a memorable and proper tribute to the man and his work. Genevieve O'Brien, who narrowly survived abduction and imprisonment at the hands of a deranged killer in THE DEAD ROOM, becomes involved with The Poe Society when one of the members --- known as the Ravens --- is murdered. One of the few clues is a cryptic note left at the scene of the crime. When it appears that another Raven has been attacked by the same individual, O'Brien becomes concerned for Elaine, her mother, who is also a member of the club. She retains private investigator Joe Connolly to investigate in order to find the killer before he claims additional victims.

O'Brien has one ulterior motive: it was Connolly who saved her life in THE DEAD ROOM. She has since developed feelings that have gone beyond the deep fond. Connolly behaves distantly towards her, however, and only reluctantly takes the case, not totally convinced that Elaine is in any danger. What O'Brien does not know is that Connolly is seeing ghosts --- literally. Corpses are speaking to him from morgue slabs, and his cousin and his cousin's fiancée are appearing to him, warning him of danger and providing him with clues. When he takes the case, however, Connolly finds that there are no lack of suspects for murder. And when additional victims are discovered, a pattern becomes clear. Someone is killing people in the ways described in some of Poe's most famous stories --- and O'Brien is on target to become the next victim.

THE DEATH DEALER can stand tall upon its mystery and thriller elements alone, but Graham throws more than the standard genre elements into the mix. Even the most casual Poe readers will find much of interest here, with factoids concerning the noted author's habitat, past, and tragic enigmatic end sprinkled liberally throughout the narrative. There are also strong elements of romance on both sides of the veil, as well as the possibility that, as far as books featuring Genevieve O'Brien are concerned, Graham may just be getting warmed up. Put THE DEATH DEALER on your have-to-read list.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Death Dealer
All of Heather Graham's books that I have read so far have been sit on the edge of your seat thrillers. I really don't think I have read a bad book written by her. Anyone who likes thrillers I strongly advise picking up one of her books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love those ghost stories...........
This book was classic Heather G.A mix of mystery, suspense, paranormal and romance all revolving around Edgar Allan Poe. The characters (living) are wonderful and the ghosts are spectacular. I love that Heather brings in characters and story lines from past books and ties it all together. As is usual for her books a surprise twist in the end; the whodoneit is not who you suspect. The heroine, Gen,is smart but vulnerable, the hero, Joe, is strong, brooding, but also vulnerable. I loved this books. It is not an immensely deep book but quite entertaining and fun in classic H.G. style. Hope you enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good disbeliever/believer team-up
PI Joe Connolly absolutely scoffs at anyone's belief in ghosts in spite of encounters with the paranormal world and is hired by Genevieve O'Brien to investigate the murder and attempted murder of two members of an EdgarAllan Poe literary society. The woman fears that her mother who belongs to the society may be a target, but of course it develops that Genevieve herself is in danger. The long rmantic episodes may put off male readers and many mystery fans may find the solution somewhat arbitrary, but those who enjoy the paranormal/suspense/romance genre should love this one because the author is skilled at weaving the three genres together. One murder closely parallels one Poe story, and the conclusion strongly suggests two others, so Poe fans should find much to enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description
A year ago, archaeologist Leslie MacIntyre barely survived an explosion that took the life of her fiancé, Matt Connolly. Since then she's slowly come to terms with both her loss and an unsettling ability to communicate with ghosts, a "gift" received in the wake of her brush with death.

Now she's returned to lower Manhattan, site of the explosion, to investigate a newly discovered burial ground. In this place restless spirits hold the secrets not only of past injustice but of a deadly conspiracy against the city's women—including Leslie herself.

By night Matt visits her in dreams, warning her and offering clues to the truth. By day she finds herself helped by—and attracted to—his flesh-and-blood cousin Joe. Torn by her feelings for both men, caught between the worlds of the living and the dead, Leslie struggles against the encroaching danger. As she is drawn closer to the darkness, she must ultimately face the power of an evil mind, alone in a place where not even the men she loves can save her. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tense Ghost Story
Heather Graham's The Dead Room is a smooth concoction that's equal parts ghost story, mystery, thriller, and archeological tale. The author keeps enough balls in the air that the read is entertaining and event-driven as well as filled with characters that step off the page.

Lesley MacIntyre is an anthropologist with an uncanny knack for finding the unmarked graves of people that have died decades as well as hundreds of years ago. She'd always had some of this ability, but after the murder of her fiancé, Matt, that ability grew even stronger, till she ended up having to seek help to manage everything that was going on in her life.

I'm not a big believer in parapsychology and ghosts, but I do enjoy stories about things like that - as long as the author can make a case for them.Graham does so easily because she's written several other books on those subjects. In fact, several of those novels are loosely interconnected, borrowing characters from earlier books as this one does.Ghosts stop just short of being too creepy and keep the story from become full-blown horror.Kind of a "gentle" scare for the reader.

And that balance between gentle scare and fear of the serial killer that Matt was tracking down in his reporter's job is well played throughout the book.Of course, this wouldn't be a romance novel if there weren't some coincidences, like Matt's lookalike cousin Joe tracking a woman that disappeared who was connected with the murdered prostitutes Matt was investigating.

But Graham keeps those details mixed in well, and I didn't have any problem swallowing them.Everything was connected so tightly that it couldn't be anything but fiction, but it was a solid gem of a story.

I enjoyed the history Graham talks about in the book, and I even picked up a couple books on the archeological excavations going on in New York because the subject was so interesting. She puts out just enough detail to bring the reader's imagination to full involvement, and the house is just seductive enough with history and ghosts to manifest a presence on the pages as well.Several times the scenes played out in my mind on familiar movie sets.

I really liked Joe's character as well. He's the solid kind of private investigator you want working for you on a big case.I liked his point of view and thought he brought a lot to the story as well.

Graham didn't hold back on the love scenes either, and it was kind of interesting thinking that this was something the movie Ghost missed out on.At first I didn't know how she was going to resolve the potential love triangle she'd set up in the pages, and I was surprised at the ending, but I thought it worked out very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I shouldn't worry about spoiling the ending since others have
All the same, I'll try not to hintat the ending except to say that the ending did surprise me more than it should have. Those who have read much of this authors books will notice, as I did, an interesting variation of the usual formula early on which signals the unusual but, if you think about it, consistent ending. That said, I actually consider this possibly her best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend
I would not recommend this book to anyone, and I don't think I'll be reading any more of Graham's books. This book just seemed phoned in: weak character development, weak, not believable plot, way too much babbling dialogue and an ending that was lame and still left questions.

Spoiler alert:
The motivations of the villain are still a mystery to me: he blows up part of a historic building to kill our heroine, but succeeds instead in killing her husband and 4 innocent people. Okay, there's lots ways to kill someone, and making it look like an accident. But blowing up a building? Come on. And then he waits over a year to try to kill her again. His attempts are bumbling and clumsy. But this is the villain who had successfully kidnapped and murdered a bunch of women already. To make the whole thing worse, his reasons for wanting her dead so badly are unclear and not believable.

The other male lead is an overbearing man, who would have been appealing had his character been better developed. He doesn't sleep for days and days in his efforts to keep Leslie safe and Leslie herself makes so many stupid decisions that she deserved what happened to her in the end.

There are so many well written, captivating books out there. This is not one of them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Graham Fan
Except for one review here the rest are worthless. Since I read all Graham's books I still bought it, but E. Walkers review was differently on the money. This would have been less disappointing to me, if Graham had added more to Leslie's and Matt's history at the beginning of the book.....Reading a book where you feel the heroine wants to die, is not entertaining to me. Differently not a book I will read again, like Brett and Nikki's story.

2-0 out of 5 stars Who Cares?
I wonder how many others feel the way I do: When a romantic thriller heroine persists in foolishly putting herself directly into harm's way time after time, even after several "accidents" and repeated warnings from other characters, I finally stop caring what happens to her. In fact, I almost wish that she would reap the violent doom that she keeps asking for. (Hey! Could my wish come true this time?)

In THE DEAD ROOM, Leslie is supposedly a very intelligent archaeologist, with the added advantage of being able to talk to ghosts. Yet she keeps doing the dumbest things, always contriving to be alone in situations when any sensible person would seek some protection from others. Despite strict orders from Joe, a private eye and cousin of her dead fiance, she always goes right back to the same dangerous spot, never taking advantage of the accompaniment of trusted friends who are readily available.

Actually, she isn't the only dumb one--even worse is the guy who is trying to kill her. He is an authority figure, one who would never be suspected (of course). He could very easily lure Leslie into a one-on-one encounter far away from "the dead room," and could dispose of her with no problem at all. However, he first tries to blow her up in a crowded building and succeeds in killing her fiance and a few other hapless people, but of course, Leslie escapes, though with some injuries. He also pushes her off a crowded subway platform onto the tracks, risking the very good chance that he would be recognized, since he is a public figure with his picture in the paper frequently.

Leslie, meanwhile, leans on a wall in an archaeological dig and falls right through it, making a major find. Later, again ignoring Joe's warning against snooping around alone, she tumbles down a flight of stairs behind a barricade in a construction area and falls right on the body of a missing prostitute (just one of several that our murderer has disposed of--for a pretty poor reason).

Joe is not immune to the stupidity epidemic running rampant through this novel. In the grand climax, he has 3 cops at his disposal, but he separates his forces, sending 2 of them down a different unused subway tunnel. Then (of course) the other klutzy cop trips on a rail and sprains his ankle, leaving Joe alone (of course) to face the unknown danger.

These are just a few samples of the author's pathetic manipulations; the list could be several times as long. All I will say about the ending is good riddance, and Joe doesn't realize what a lucky guy he is. Poor Matt! If his other worldly existence was bad before, it will be more like hell now.

This is the first Heather Graham novel I have read--and the last. I don't know why I read the whole thing; just like the reluctant fascination of watching a gross calamity, i suppose. ... Read more

Product Description
A secret government unit is formed under the oversight of Adam Harrison, famed paranormal investigator. The six members he’s gathered know a little of the otherworldly – each has honed a psychic talent of their own.

Jackson Crowe, part English, part Cheyenne, heads the group. Haunted by his experience with an ancestral ghost who saved his life as a child, and the recent murders of two previous teammates, Jackson can’t tell if Adam’s demoted him or given him an extraordinary opportunity. Despite his link to the realm of spirits, he’s well aware that the living commit the most heinous crimes, with spiritualist charlatans existing merely to fool and seduce the unwary.

To counterbalance Jackson’s careful skepticism, Adam Harrison has paired him with Angela Hawkins, a young woman who learned the painful lesson of loss at an early age. A police officer utilizing her paranormal intuition in Virginia, she already has her hands full. But Adam’s call to New Orleans is strong.

The case: In a historic mansion in New Orleans’s French Quarter, a senator’s wife falls to her death from a balcony. Most think she jumped, distraught over the loss of her young son. Some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits that inhabit the house – once the site of a serial killer’s grisly work.

Whether supernatural or all too human, crimes of passion, greed and desire will cast the pair into danger of losing their lives…and their immortal souls. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good paranormal story
If you really like paranormal stories which bristles your nape hairs you can read this one. The story is fast paced, spooky and eerie and at the same time a very good thriller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great story by Heather Graham
I enjoyed this book. I thought that it was well written and kept me on my toes. Like all of her books, once I start I can't put it down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Boring Meaningless Dialogue
I think the title for my review sums it up for me.There was so much meaningless dialogue between too many characters. I stopped reading every line and skipped ahead to the end to see "who dunnit".I felt the book could have been really good if the story had been better developed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghosts, Treasure, Hero's Oh My!!!
When diving for treasure literally, Genevieve Wallace comes face to face with a dead woman. When this dead woman tries to speak to her she is frightened and races for the surface. She reports what she saw but fellow divers find nothing. This terrifies Genevieve but she takes the teasing of her friends with good cheer. What she doesn't take with good cheer is the condescending attitude of Thor Thompson. He is working the dive site along with her team.He thinks she is crazy and a possible danger to work with. She sees things and her dead lady keeps popping up and no one sees her.But when a dead body washes up on shore...the mystery of what or rather who Gen saw underwater should have been solved. But it hasn't. The dead lady is not the same one Gen has seen and Thor finds himself spending more and more time with her and thinks there just might be something to the "ghost" that haunts her. Their close working relationship as dive buddies is forcing them to rely on the other and it's not long before passion begins to burn between them. Can they stay one step ahead of what is going on with their hearts in tack?

This was a great read.A skillfully woven tale that includes, ghost, suspense, and of course romance as only Ms. Graham can create!Think romance meets Pirates of the Caribbean and you can imagine how entertained you will be.Thor and Gen are great characters and you will be kept guess as to who the baddie is up until the very end.Ms. Graham has vividly brought to life the Key's and if you are looking for a way to escape for just a little bit...this is the ticket!

4-0 out of 5 stars revenge is sweet
A paranormal romantic suspense, Graham dives right into the story here with Gen Wallace encountering the body of a floating woman underwater at her newest scuba diving job. When she surfaces in a panic, the rest of her crew searches for evidence of a body, but no one can find anything. Her new co-worker, Thor, a salvage worker, doubts her ability to be a responsible dive partner and worker, but Gen's reputation precedes her and she is allowed to continue on the dive. When Thor and Gen overcome their differences and end up lovers, Thor begins to believe the unnatural events that Gen encounters as he experiences a few himself. When the body of a woman surfaces, Gen's story is given some credence until she denies that it is the same woman. When more bodies are discovered, and the divers discover reports of more missing women, Gen and Thor unearth the paranormal ties to Gen's ghost and the grisly discoveries, as well as a newfound passion for one another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery novel
This was an excellent book for reading during a long trip. I enjoy reading this author and have read and reread many of the ooks she has written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I've recently finished reading this book for the second time in two years, and I've got to say that I just love it.I read many of Heather Graham's novels, and I have really liked all of them. While at times it can be a bit predictable, it is still a very good book. The protagonists are very likable. Even though the fact that they used to be step siblings is a little creepy at first, it doesn't really make a difference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
The editor for this book should be fired.I was looking for a quick read in the genre of romantic suspense. The plot was poor and several key facts of the story had major flaws. Also, the grammatical errors were in the double digits at least. It appeared as though this book was quickly written and then rushed for publishing.Definitely not on the same level as other authors within this field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprised to find no review
Ok, not one of her best and a reissue, but still worth reading, if you're a Graham fan. You do figure out who the killer is a little too soon in the book, about half way.
Kyle is her stepbrother, but has always been attracted to Madison and she of course has been in love with him all along. Of course they end up not being able to fight the attraction, especially since they are staying in the same house.
You should still enjoy all the interaction between all the siblings step and natural and ex-husbands.
Read it and decide for yourself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Supernatural Thriller
The story
Jessy is at the craps table in a rare run winning a small fortune when a man collapses on her. He is the bodyguard of her boss and he has a knife in his back. Dillon helps her escape from under the dead man. Dillion is a PI currently on a job for Jessy's boss as well. Dillon takes an instant interest to Jessy. Jessy starts to see the dead man at home, at work. She thinks she's gone crazy. She's out to lunch with Dillon when the dead show up and freak Jessy out. She realizes Dillon can see them too. Dillon makes her transition into a nightwalker, people who see the dead, easing her fears and protecting her against those who mean them harm. An old ghost tale is coming to haunt those now living in the present. Dillonand Jessy together will be in the middle of the fray in the past and future.

Thoughts
Those who enjoy John Saul's supernatural thrillers will enjoy this book. I was excited to find a new supernatural thriller author. I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read. The pace is fast enough to keep me fascinated. I couldn't put it down. I loved all the characters, Dillon and Jessy along with all their friends and associates. Dillon and Jessy's relationship was written well, you can feel their chemistry. Those are good books IMO, ones that the emotion relays to the reader and keeps you captivated. I will definitely be looking into more from Heather Graham.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality
Jessy Sparhawk is a Vegas showgirl who prefers not to spend time gambling. When she finds herself in need of money, she sets all her misgivings aside and bets her savings hoping lady luck will stop by her table. She needs to double her money to keep her grandfather safe and happy in a retirement home, and desperately wants to come through for the man who has cared for her since her parents died when she was a child. Fortunately, her numbers hit, but she soon finds that her luck has a dark side when a man she doesn't know walks into the casino and literally dies on top of her. He whispers one word to her before expiring --- indigo.

When she sees the ghost of the dead man, Tanner Green, she starts worrying about her own sanity, but does her best to convince herself that it's just stress from the ordeal. To add another level to her now very complicated life, her grandfather keeps talking about ghost dancers he sees in the walls and the sky, which causes her more distress over his failing mental state and age. Jessy wants to write it off as stories from his childhood on the Lakota reservation, but even she has trouble convincing herself of that theory.

A few days after the events at the casino, she heads back to work hoping a change of scenery will calm her nerves when the ghost she convinced herself she wasn't seeing suddenly appears at her show. She starts to wonder seriously about her mental state, which becomes more ragged when she is almost hit by an onstage prop at her show. Her friends believe it's an attempt on her life, but she prefers to believe it was just an accident. Luckily for Jessy, Dillon Wolf, a private investigator working the Tanner Green murder case, among other things, wants to help her. While Jessy tried her best to ignore feelings for him after their first meeting the night of Green's murder, she soon finds herself drawn to him more each day.

Dillon also has a secret to share with Jessy --- he is a nightwalker, an individual who can see and interact with ghosts. She opens up to him and shares what she can. He believes she must help Green in order for him to move on and her nightmare to be over. Unfortunately, more events are in play than either Jessy or Dillon are aware of, and they find they will have more than just one ghost, and person, to save in the end.

Heather Graham's books have a wonderful paranormal quality to them, always reminding the reader there is something out there even when it can't be seen. NIGHTWALKER follows the same model, providing the audience with a look into the past through the eyes of the generally unseen. Her characters and their new-found apparitions have a way of drawing the reader in to experience the sorrows and mysteries that hold the ghosts to a bygone world.

The Native American background that Graham attributes to her characters adds to the story, lending it a very mystical feel. She weaves in just enough history to make the ghosts seem plausible. In fact, the history of a few of the ghosts is so interesting you wish they were bigger players.

While the story is set in Las Vegas, a good portion of the action takes place in a ghost town in the desert with a long and unhappy history. The events that occur in this forgotten town bring together the characters for an ending that closes doors not just in the present but also in the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Paranormal Old West
The latest book I completed from Graham was Nightwalker. It has a different take on it turning away from the typical, but oh, so lovable Cajun country, New England or Irish settings, Nightwalker takes you into the desert Southwest both past and present. I was really eager to delve into this ambiance (being of my own homeland atmosphere) and see the fusing of the Old West with the same setting in modern day.

All things considered, I have to say that I was hooked as I could be with any other work from Graham, but...there was that missing intoxicating allure that this author is famous for in my reading realm. I just didn't have the same seductive feel that I had with every single other book I have read from Graham. Although, she did include her trademark twist at the end (always a rare trait I seek out), I had long before already guessed the 'surprise' ending, which I also felt a bit bland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent !!!Easy reading, but not shallow.

Nightwalker is an excellent read for those who like paranormal mysteries. It draws you in from the beginning, keeps your interest, and wraps up the story nicely.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best I've read by this author so far...

NIGHTWALKER is a blend of romance, ghosts, reincarnation, Indian rituals and lots of suspense. I've not been a huge fan of Heather Graham, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I don't feel it rates a full five-star rating, but pretty darn close.

Product Description
When a fortune-teller shows bridesmaid Lauren Crow an omen of her gruesome death, she and her friends laugh it off as cheesy theatrics—until women begin disappearing in the night.

Even as the streets become more dangerous, Lauren finds herself lusting after a man who is himself dangerous— and quite possibly crazy. Mark Davidson prowls the city by night armed with crosses and holy water, in search of vampires, whose existence, he insists, is real. He is as irresistibly drawn to Lauren as she is to him, and not only because she's the image of his murdered fiancée. But Mark's frightening obsession with finding his lover's killer merely hides a bitter vendetta that cuts deeper than grief over a lost love.

As Lauren wrestles with desire and disbelief, sinister shadows lengthen over New Orleans, threatening her friends and foretelling a battle that may spell the end of the city's uneasy truce between the living and the undead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heather Graham fans will like this one
I have loved everything I have read to date from her. This book was no exception. Her eariler books were the best, but this one has an interesting plot and is a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good take on the modern vampire genre
Considering the multitude of vampire tales available these days, I wasn't expecting Heather Graham to come up with as entertaining a twist as she did here.Three L. A. gals are having a bachelorette party for one of them in New Orleans and of course in a city filled with fortune tellers, they do have to try one.Of course, the one they pick happens to be a true psychic and the reading for the one member of the party, Lauren, turns nightmarish.Next up, they encounter a charming stranger who is struck by Lauren's resemblence to his murdered former love and fiance. He does appear to be crazed, obsessed with tracking down vampires.Heather Graham does a good job of cloaking him in mystery and keeping all three of the young women in jeopardy up to and including a horrendous climax.Graham introduces us to some entrancing characters including the mysterious Jonas, Susan the fortune teller, police lieutenant Sean Canady, and the formidable Stephan. As usual, Graham has to slow down the plot with erotic scenes that go on for three or four pages, but I must admit that I found this to be a very good book by her. It's targetted at the female romantic suspense crowd, but as a guy, I quite liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood Red is Great Entertainment
Blood Red is not your typical romance/thriller. It wasn't what I'd normally pick up, but I really enjoyed it. Three women are in New Orleans for a wild batchelorette weekend and find themselves the target of a vampire. The Vampire chases them and almost succeeds in killing them all, except for a tall, dark and handsome vampire chaser. At first the women don't believe his tales of vampires-until they see the evidence with their own eyes. What follows is a battle between good and evil where everyone is not what they seem. This book is a great read

2-0 out of 5 stars Lucky to Get 2 Stars
This book was terrible. The Vampire storyline is the reason I got the book. Only to find the Vampirism to be written so terribly dull and predicable. The only so-called humor is when you laugh at the the fact that the author used awful and over done, vampire lines. Very cheesy, and not worth the time to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blood Red is Blood Good Fun
Lauren Crow is not having a good time.

After accompanying her friends Heidi and Deanna on a trip to New Orleans to celebrate Heidi's upcoming wedding, she receives bad news: her life is in danger.

The giver of this news is Susan, a fortune teller in Jackson Square. She stares into her crystal ball and tells Lauren to leave, to take her friends and go. Something stalks her, something wants her and she is in danger.

As if that weren't bad enough, she is being followed by a man named Mark Davidson. After finding Lauren in a New Orleans bar, he doesn't want to let her out of his sight. She is the spitting image of Katie, his first love, who was killed so many years ago by a murderous vampire.

Mark knows that if he lets Lauren out of his sight for one moment, Stephan will claim Lauren for his just like he did Katie. Lauren, however, is having none of this. She doesn't believe in vampire mumbo jumbo and won't accept the truth.

Until the vampire starts to hunt one of her friends. Suddenly the danger they are all in is very real and Lauren must rely on Mark for help. She must also try to ignore the growing passion that sparks to life between them.

But some things don't always go as planned...

Blood Red manages to breathe new life into the tired genre of vampire fiction and it does it extremely well. Having never read a book by Heather Graham before I wasn't sure what to expect; I didn't know if I was in for a bodice ripper with fangs or a book with fangs with a touch of fire. Thankfully it was the latter.

What makes Blood Red so successful is the characters. Lauren is no cardboard cut out heroine. She is tough and stands well on her own two feet. Mark Davidson, vampire hunter, isn't the rough and ready macho man that so many hero's end up being. In short, they aren't caricatures. They feel like living, breathing people.

Graham also manages to throw a new twist on vampire lore that works beautifully. They're still harmed by holy water but Graham has a few new twists up her sleeve. I love when an author take a paranormal element that's already been done to death and makes it his or her own. Graham excels in the paranormal and it never comes off feeling hokey or fake. You will honestly believe, even if for an instant, that vampires exist.

In short, I loved this book. I was hooked from the first page and couldn't stop reading. It's the perfect cure for a case of the blues or to make your summer night red hot. It has something to please everyone: suspense, romance, thrills, and paranormal elements. Graham manages to be deft at juggling all her balls and never drops a single one.

If you haven't fallen under Graham's spell yet, what are you waiting for? Blood Red is an absolute flat out fantastic book and you'll love every bloody moment of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment - Poor writing
Heather Graham is one of my favorite authors. I have read most of her books but I was really disappointmented when I read this one.
This book did not sound like her at all. Not only the story was not good but sometimes I had a hard time understading what she was talking about. Uses of pronouns instead of nouns made me to read a phrase a couple of times to finally get it.

It was a waste of time and I won't recommend this to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graham proves she remembers the romance!
Heather Graham is a writer that seems to do it all.Historicals set in Scotland, Historicals set during the Florida Civil War, Historicals about siblings torn apart during the War Between the States, and hard-edge Contemporary Suspense. So it won't be a surprise to find this is another in her endless line a good reads.

Alex McCord is just getting her life back together following a very rough divorce. She is facing a good job in the Florida Keys, and maybe a new romance. Then her ex-hubby arrives.David Denham is ever more handsome and troublesome.David knows something is rotten in paradise, and needs his ex-wife to prove it.

While they are trying to stop a killer, they cannot fight the killer attraction between them that still simmers, despite everything that has gone between them in the past.David is drop dead sexy, a really great Alpha hero and Alex is a charmer, too.

So many of the writers who came up through series romance in the last twenty years seems to have forgotten their romance fans and their romance roots.I often see fans bemoaning, "where's the romance" in their works.Delightfully, that is NOT the case with Grahams strong sexy, sizzling suspense - the romance is there in spades!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Romantic Suspense
Ms. Graham is a very talented author who has returned to her roots as a serial romance author with her latest effort. As a result she has given us another great read that is short and to the point but has great characterization and a fast moving plot that will have readers turning the pages.

The suspense portion of this read is great. You are really left to guessing who the killer is out of a cast of several likely suspects. There are enough red herrings thrown out that you are truly left guessing until the final pages. The chemistry between our main characters is great and the fact that they have a past relationship actually only addes to the the push and pull of their new and growing attraction.

This was a first class read by a great author whom I pick up simply because her name graces the cover.I highly recommend this read and really any other titles that she has penned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prophecing story line
Found the story line intriguing and look forward to the second book, incorporates a variety of paranormal aspects and I found the book to be suspenseful and thought it moved along fairly well.A variety of characters and personalities to grow the story around.Hope she finishes the series!

1-0 out of 5 stars Vampires Again...
I typically enjoy Heather Graham's books for a quick (no thought required) read. The beginning of this book showed some promise. The plot looked fairly solid (even though the "Superman Saves the World" stuff is a bit overdone), the character sketches were drawn to intrigue and she had some smart elements (she even mentions Valhalla in the beginning). From this point the story just went down hill. She relied too much upon the overdone, and used current popular literature as a crutch. She had a demonic plot to destroy the world and combined it with the saviors (who are selected people representing the 12 signs of the Zodiac as well as the four elements) and then she brought in the Vampires (and this is where she lost me). She didn't need them; her book could have worked (and worked better) without them. Suddenly, (in the last third of the book) she reveals some of the main characters to be vampires and instead of regular people representing the Zodiac you have some vampires mixed with regulars and suddenly the nun (who was a very interesting character as the oracle) is also being replaced by a vampire. You have vampire fights and vampire captures and it just becomes too complex (in the way that she brought in what was not needed). The story morphs into just another book with a vampire identity. It is really too bad. I won't be keeping up with this series and it was really so bad that she might not be writing a book two. ()

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy entertainment
I really liked this book, with its blend of paranormal, mystery and romance. It might not qualify as "great fiction" but its a really good read for a winter's afternoon!

The primary characters are well fleshed and believable, as are the descriptions of the various locales. The story opens with Scott Bryant's tale of a supernatural event occurring in his visit to California, laying the ground work for the rest of the novel.Melanie Regan's entry into the story continues the mix of supernatural mystery as they both embark on a journey that will lead them to Italy, much to Melanie's chagrin.

There in Italy, the story deepens as they descend into a world ruled by rules that were never dreamed of in sunny California, as Christianity, vampires, demons and Satan all enter the tale.Only at the very end do you discover whether or not Good or Evil will win the battle.

Anyone who enjoys supernatural twists to a tale will enjoy this one, even if it never makes it to any teacher's list of "Great American Novels" required reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dust to Dust by Heather Graham
I've read other great works by Heather: THE SÉANCE, HAUNTED and GHOST WALK to name a few, all of which were fun reads, so when I saw DUST TO DUST I was pretty excited to sit down and get started.

Sadly, I was disappointed. While it shared promise with ties to the book of Revelation (a personal favorite of mine), Mayan prophecies of the world ending in 2012 and the realm of the supernatural, it ended up just being a bunch of blah. Characters with great potential were left untouched, while the ones we were supposed to care for I found boring if not annoying. And finally, there's the twist towards the end that made it hard for me to finish reading.

I hate writing negative reviews about a book, especially seeing as I know how much work goes into writing one, but part of Amazon Vine's mission is to give honest opinions--good or bad.

My Verdict:

I was bored and had a hard time finishing. I thought maybe I was being too harsh so I read other reviews online and again, sadly, I was not alone in my opinion. You could certainly do worse; however, this one is safe to skip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kept my interest through lots of distractions
I received several books before December, and this is the one that kept my interest through a couple of weeks surrounding the birth of my child. The mix of paranormal and suspense, along with some romance, was just right. If I hadn't been interrupted by real life, I probably would have read this in one sitting. The apocalyptic events, mythical creatures, and confused humans combine to make a different sort of paranormal/supernatural suspense book, unlike others I've read.I'm going to pick up the other three in this series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting romantic suspense story!!!
Slow Burn by Heather Graham is an exciting romantic suspense story!!! I enjoyed reading it, couldn't put it down. Spencer's husband has been killed, and she is looking for his killer. Ex-cop and ex-lover David Delgado has been hired to watch over Spencer because someone is threatening her. Spencer and David have feelings for each other that have never died (great backstory on their relationship), but Spencer finds it hard to move on without knowing who killed her husband and allowing him to rest in peace. Truly one of the best contemporary romantic suspense stories that I've read. Lots of characters and possible suspects in this one. 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome read
Slow burn is an excellent read.I have read of all of Heather Graham's bboks and once again, this is top notch.David's love for Spencer is for all time. Graham makes him come to life and he is very realistic.what you would expect of a virile Latin male.I could fall in love with him.Spencer is feisty and has gumption.although it is a bit sad, the ending makes it all worthwhile. If you're into romantic suspense, the villian is not too hard to figure out.

it's a definite must read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but doesn't quite live up to the title
I love Heather Graham books, but this wasn't my favorite. It's good, but not quite a keeper.Read if you love trying to figure out who-done-it continuously.Too sad of a plot and head spinning with the suspicious actions of everyone around the main characters for me.I felt like I was being jerked around a little bit, led this way and that.Mainly, it just wasn't passionate enough and detailed enough for me in the romance part and that's why I read these books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow Burn Burns Up the Pages!!!
Wow!I haven't read a Graham book in a long time and I thought I would try out one of her contemporaries and boy was I shocked!I had only read her historicals all these years. This was excellent! The characters were so real and complex, I loved them!Especially the male lead of David Delgado.Whew, does he burn up the pages!!!

~Spencer Huntington just lost her husband, a police detective, to a brutal murder and now she is faced with the possibilty that the crime wasn't random at all.She needs help and only the trusted help of her husband's best friend and her former lover and ex-cop David Delgado. But, can she do it?She has to.She has to swallow her pride and put the past aside and get to the bottom of this heinous act.

David is from the wrong side of the tracks, being a former Cuban refugee as a child and struggling through life with nothing until his best friend Danny Huntington saved him.Danny made his friends David's too and they both fell in love with the same girl, a petite blonde rich girl named Spencer Montgomery.Ten years later, David is faced with his friend's murder and his widow, the only woman David ever loved.
...
Can their long lost love hinder their efforts for the truth or spur them on to the end?A killer awaits...

Gritty and very well written. As I would expect from Ms. Graham.David is very real and deep.Spencer is no 'rich girl' to be put on a shelf. These two make a real 'slow burn' on the pages and you will wish for more! The only complaint is that the killer is a little farfetched, but all in all, the story make up for it by far!Definate hot romance to read on a hot summer night even though I read it in March, lol.

1-0 out of 5 stars You'll scream in frustration
I certainly felt like doing so when the murderer was unveiled.I won't give anything away if for some reason you decide to read this book, but believe me the murderer is the one person who absolutely could not havecommitted the crime... at least not without more explanation fromPozzessere as to the logistics of the crime. But I went back and checkedand double-checked and I'm positive that this was a case of this author'shabitual sloppiness with details.Forget this book. It's not worth thefrustration. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars One of Graham's worst!
SOME SPOILERS!

You know, normally I go through a specific way I write my books. Opening paragraph is always an introduction & a brief description of how I felt or came to get this book. Second is always the book's description & the third is my overall feeling. For this review, I'm skipping all that & going straight to how I felt. This book sucked, big time. Or at least the 2nd half of the book did, and the ending? Oh man, that was the lamest & most drawn out thing I've read in a while.

If I had to give one good reason as to why this book failed overall, it would be that Graham tried to stuff too much into it. Literally, she's got like two different books in here. Several plot threads are abruptly thrown away in favor of bringing the new plot in. One of the characters (Len) was a creepy stalker up until 2/3 of the way through the book- he was literally following the main character of Ashley around & watching her without her knowledge. Not to mention his inner thoughts about her friend Karen later in the book where he pretty much thinks of her as a slut for being willing to have sex so quickly. (If you read that part in a different light, please feel free to correct me. But his thoughts about women putting out early were NOT complimentary!) Then suddenly he drops all of that & goes after her friend Karen. Y'know, the one who he was thinking badly of for sexxing him up.

Then when the book REALLY shifts into another light you are left going "Really? Why, Heather?". What could have been a nice creepy story about cults turns into something else entirely. When you do find out who the bad guys are, you're scratching your heads trying to remember who they are... and then rolling your eyes at it. Like another reviewer said, there are so many freaking coincidences that it's just ridiculous. Many of the plot elements could have been left out entirely & made for a better story. (Elements such as the suspciousness of Len, Sharon & another character that I won't mention because it's too much of a spoiler.)

Too many cooks will ruin the soup, but this is a case of one cook ruining the soup. Rather than go for a light sprinkling of everything or going for one main ingredient, she decided to upend her entire literary spice rack into one long novel. The only thing missing was for her to throw in some of her supernatural stuff & then she'd have had literally thrown the kitchen sink in as well.

I love Heather Graham, but I did NOT love this book. The only reason I gave it two stars is that I did enjoy the first half of the book & there were some cute scenes. If you are thinking about buying this book, check it out from the library instead & purchase one of her other books. If you haven't read anything of hers before, DON'T start with this book- it's just plain awful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Picture me.....REALLY disliking this book
The jacket blurb sounded great, but the book didn't come close to the hype. It's like a bad TV movie that leaves going-to-commercial cliffhangers that turn out to be nothing much. The ending is predictable, and I never got to like any of the characters.I am always let down when a good book ends, but not this time.........read to the end just to validate what I thought would happen.

Buy this at a library book sale..........that's where I'm bringing my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
I could NOT put this book down - it was one of Ms. Graham's best books. The mystery was well played, and suspense non-stop and the paranoia enough to make you doubt your own mother.Top it off with well-written, well-rounded characters (even the background ones) and this is a book sure to please people looking for a good mystery, good suspense, and even those who want a bit of romance to spice things up (although it isn't overly obtrusive). This is the type of book that turned me on to Heather Graham to begin with, and the type I hope she continues to turn out in high numbers.Kudos!

2-0 out of 5 stars Tedious and run-of-the-mill
This book was a definite disappointment. I nearly didn't finish it because it is very tedious and the actual story doesn't feature enough in comparison to the highly constructed "love affair". In this book, all the typical elements of an average crime story are put together - man and woman feel attracted and repelled by each other, argue a bit and land in bed, woman hears scary footsteps, rooms are searched, there are some wrong leads and a showdown. Yawn.
If those standard elements would at least have been mixed into a good story, then it would have been okay, but unfortunately even that didn't work. The wrong leads seem just as constructed as the love affair and the explanations/solutions for the wrong leads are in many cases just plainly unbelievable. There are too many characters and so in turn the characters are not well developed.
More room is given to the characters' private lives and thoughts and not enough attention is paid to the crimes, which are supposed to be the subject of the book. Those get solved in a by-the-way manner and the solution is delivered in a most uninspired and unsatisfying manner. Much more could have been made out of this story idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either
Picture me Dead started out strong, then fizzled off for a few chapters. The romance doesn't start until midway through and there is no flirting or lead in to the sex. The suspense picks up about 2/3 into the book and has you held in anticipation, but many of the red herrings get cleared too early and then it is obvious, at least it was for me who was left as the bad guy.
This would not be a book to read if you have to go visit someone at the hospital unless you enjoy the feeling of someone following you in the parking garage, and that shot of fear that goes with it.
Even though I do not think this is one of Heather Graham's best books, it wasa quick read and did have some good suspense that held to the end. Despite my ability to solve the mystery part of it, the average reader who rarely does, will probably think the ending is shocking.
This really is more of a 3 and 1/2 stars, but since that wasn't an option I went for the 4 over lowering the score. It isn't a bad read, just not one of the best. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly interesting
This was not one of her best ones, but it was good. It didn't capture and keep my attention like some of her other books, but I thought it was a decent plot and story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I loved this book--it was entertaining, a page turner--and hope to read more like it in the future!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I also felt like I had missed something along the way in this book.I went back and reread the beginning to make sure I hadn't skipped over something important when I was about half way through the book.It just didn't flow well to me.I thought the characters were silly not to have realized who they really were. Also, since the main femaile character was supposed to be very powerful and had almost defeated the bad guy before, why was she worried this time? The ending also left me cold.Altogether, I was very disappointed since I really enjoy reading vampire novels.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
I didn't expect much after reading the back cover and was therefore pleasantly surprised by the well rounded the story of Jessica Fraser, psychologist and bed & breakfast owner in New Orleans. I'd categorize the book as a vampire mystery with some well placed love scenes thrown in rather than a vampire romance novel. There's a fresh new take on vampires and vampire hunters to surprise the reader and even though I wasn't compelled to read it in one day I was sufficiently interested by the story to finish the book and the further I read the more I was curious how the author would let it all end.

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Read!!!
Jessica Fraser travels to Transylvania for a conference. She is plagued the night before with unrest and questions why the idea of travel has her so upset.Despite her misgivings she packs her bags and wings her way east. While in Romania she feels as if she's being watched by the man she dreams about called "Master."She meets a man named Bryan and he requests her help and Jessica is not sure if she should help him or not. She's hiding a secret but the attraction she feels for Bryan is too strong. Together they will team up to fight evil but will they have a chance to be happy after the dust settles?

What can you say...It's Heather Graham. This was a fantastic page turner and one that I highly recommend. It was thrilled to find this was a continuation of her vampire stories she penned under her other name Shannon Drake.Ms. Graham is a wonderful talent who manages to interweave several different storylines together which ultimately gives the book more depth.Bryan and Jessica are fine additions to the stories she's created and the chemistry that burns between them is sexy.I highly recommend this read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sensual and Sassy Historical Romance
This novel of the Civil War is the first in a trilogy about the Camerons, a wealthy Virginia plantation family who find their loyalties divided when the Civil War breaks out. Most of this novel is told from the point of view of Kiernan Mackay, the spirited and beautiful neighbor of the Camerons who has loved the oldest Cameron brother, Jesse, for most of her life. Time and circumstances finally collaborate to get this couple together, but their bliss is short-lived when their beloved Virginia secedes from the Union and the lovers find themselves on opposite sides of the divide and neither is willing to compromise on their convictions. Jesse, an army surgeon, rides off to the North, leaving Kiernan behind in the little town of Harper's Ferry, which is about to find itself in the middle of a tug-of-war between the Union and the Confederacy. But war has a way of tearing people apart and throwing them back together in dramatic fashion, and as the bloody conflict rages on, Kiernan and Jesse begin to question their ideals, their loyalities, and their feelings for each other. This novel borderlines on being a bodice-ripper and it is a bit on the melodramatic side, but it's delicious and well-researched and I couldn't put it down. I've already put the next book in the trilogy on my wishlist.

3-0 out of 5 stars MORE OF A DETAILED HISTORY BOOK INSTEAD OF A GOOD STORY--
I was quite surprised, as this book really wasn't very good. It droned on and on, more like a detailed history lesson than anything else with a bit of a story woven in to it. I had to wade past a lot of facts to get through it. From previous reviews I was expecting more. The story itself was too drawn out and the ending tended to ramble on while the main character Kiernan's "I love you-I hate you" routine really got old.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay...
...It was good enough for me to read the sequel, but there is just something about the book that I just didn't care for. When I pick up a historical romance novel I want to feel like I was actually there; it should surround you and fill your head - not make you want to roll your eyes and smack your sister! One of the main characters in the book, Kiernan, was written to be mostly angry and just downright hateful towards her "lover" Jesse.Typically, you would expect this senario in a romance novel to some degree, but this went over the top.(As an example - Kiernan is always angry and mean towards Jesse until he would touch her or kiss her and then when they were "done" - She turns back into the devil -"You're a Yankee, look what you made me do!" - This will go on until almost the very last page.) Even though I liked the book I found myself skimming through some of the pages - not really wanting to wrap myself around every single word. It was good, but it could've been SOOoooo much better!

1-0 out of 5 stars ONE WORE BLUE
I COULD NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH I ORDERED IT,I NEVER RECEIVED IT BECAUSE BOTH TIMES I ORDERED IT I GOT A MESSAGE SAYING IT WAS ORDERED,THEN I ALSO RECEIVED A MESSAGE THAT I WOULD BE RECEIVING A REFUND BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS NOT AVAILABLE,EVEN THOUGH WHEN I ORDERED IT,IT SAID IT WAS NEW PRINT. I AM VERY UPSET WITH: "A1 BOOKS" TO THE POINT WHERE I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN.

The author has a way with words that keep you interested in the story.Plus she has knowledge and done research to make the story real.

1-0 out of 5 stars Purple Prose
Possibly the worst book I've ever tried to read. I suffered though about 60% of it and was put off by a huge cast of unlikable, cardboard, irrational characters in an inane plot. The adolescent writing style, purple prose, is witless, repetitive and infuriating.I'm all for the first amendment, but this book (and authors) should be outlawed.Harlequin and Thorndike press should be fined for publishing it.Burn all copies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!
Heather Graham is one of my favorite authors and I loved her work in Never Sleep with Strangers! The characters are appealing, the plot intriguing and the story well-written.I've read this book many times and will likely read it again!

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible...boring...confusing
This book was such a disappointment! It seemed as if there was no plot, and the entire purpose of the book was to simply gather a bunch of people, describe them and have them all in various scenes and conversations that make them look suspicious! There is no actual "solving" of the crime, something that I find in common with other books by Heather Graham. The main characters "stumble" upon the culprit, through no means of their own.Don't expect them to actually figure out "who-dun-it"!A jambled, thrown-together stew of characters who don't matter, and you don't even care who actually dies or lives.Very similar to other books by Graham, such as "Ghost Walk" and "Eyes of Fire" - there are a large grou of suspects who work together, stay at a resort together, or stay in a castle together - the only thing that changes is the location.Too formulaic in that sense, and much too hard to keep track of all these secondary characters that don't end up mattering at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars You'll Need a Character Roster!
Several times throughout this book, I thought the title gave away the identity of the killer. Then I wondered why an author would do that... and I continued wondering until the identity was revealed.

This tale begins with Cassandra (Jon's wife) being tossed over a balcony, but who did the tossing?Since Jon is hosting a Mystery Week for charity at his castle in Scotland, it could have been any of the guests in attendance.

Heather Graham has a great premise for a mystery but convolutes it with too many characters all of which could be the murderer.Cassandra was the murder victim and Sabrina hadn't attended the charity function, so those are the only two in the book who didn't have the author's finger pointing directly at them at one time or another. But Graham does point the finger at the remaining cast:Camy (Jon's assistant), Joshua (artist), Susan (writer's critic), and the mystery writers - Jon (the host), VJ, Tom, Joe, Brett, Reggie, Anna Lee, Dianne, and Thayer.

The mystery game takes place several years after Cassandra's death, and Jon is determined to have everyone return and finally figure out whom the real killer could be.It's a dangerous game but necessary for his peace of mind.

Joshua has created a tableau of famous villains in Jon's dungeon that is part of the mystery game. Each villain or victim is modeled after one of the guests and it gives all of them goose bumps when they see themselves immortalized in wax.And so the intrigue begins...

The story drags a bit as it jumps from one character to another without a smooth transition.Sabrina repetitively battles with her ex-husband, Brett, who wants to reconcile. She tries to ignore the feelings she still has for Jon.It seems as if all of these guests continue to argue and not get along which made me wonder why in the world they would be invited to a mystery week on a continuous basis. Why not have people who can get along - that would make for a more enjoyable time. But that wasn't Graham's intentions.

The villain and accomplice are very predictable but Graham continues to try to mislead the reader. Some of the scenes are so blatantly nonsense, it is easily seen as a chance for misguidance. But there are other times she makes you wonder if your villain choice is accurate.

With no real intrigue, Graham uses a passel of characters to baffle the reader. In my opinion, it would have been better to use fewer people and delve into the story line a bit more. There was no reason as to why Jon hosts these Mystery Weeks, no reason as to why this group of people is always invited, etc. These facts are tossed out and the reader is not to question why.A few of these would be ok, but there are too many loose ends from beginning to end that are not tied up.

NEVER SLEEP WITH STRANGERS is a decent story and average at best.I much preferred HAUNTED than this one.

Product Description
A slice of paradise in the turquoise waters of southern Florida, the island is a lush, breathtaking sanctuary. Few can resist its allure, or its primitive beauty -- but fewer still know its secrets.

On a weekend vacation with her brother and niece, Beth Anderson is unnerved when a stroll on the beach reveals what appears to be a skull, and instantly recalls the retired couple who disappeared off the island's coast a few months earlier. As a stranger approaches, Beth panics and covers the evidence. But when she later returns to the beach, the skull is gone.

With only her niece as a witness, there is no proof of foul play for Beth to bring to the authorities. To her brother, the missing skull is just a good story to tell at an island bonfire and campout that night. The tale is heard by an eager group of vacationers -- including charismatic Keith Henson, the stranger from the beach. Everyone dismisses the events as the product of an overactive imagination, but when Beth hears someone outside her tent, she instinctively knows her fears are justified.

Determined to find solid evidence to bring to the police, Beth digs deeper into the mystery of the skull -- and everywhere she goes, Keith Henson seems to appear. He claims to be keeping an eye on her safety, but Beth senses other motives. Then a body washes ashore, and Beth begins to think she needs more help than she bargained for. Because investigating is a dangerous game, and someone wants to stop Beth from playing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
I have read other Heather Graham books and they were light and entertaining. This bookhas no substance to it at all.Don't waste your time on the read there is no depth to the book at all.If this were her first attempt at writing she would have been told to find another career!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Island
Book arrived quickly, a real steal for the money!Great reading!I love Heather Graham books!Thumbs up!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not her best, but still not bad for a beach read
I will warn you ahead of time. This wasn't Graham's strongest book, not by a long shot. In fact, I would say that it is one of the weakest books she's put out so far. Even so, it's not bad for a fluff read.

The story begins with Beth & her family going to nearby Calliope Island for a weekend camping trip. From there she finds a skull, meets a hottie, loses a skull & gains a huge mystery. Unfortunately for the hottie, Beth is uber-suspicious of him from the start- something that puts a crimp in his secretive plans for the island.

(sigh) This book had a lot of potential but got bogged down by a shallow plot and characters. Rather than give Beth a good reason to be suspect of Keith (the hottie), Beth is irrationally suspicious of him. We're told that they're hot for each other, but it's just not believable. Then there's the background lusting of Ben & Amber, but that's practically non-existent & unbelievable.

If you want a brainless beach read then read this. If you want something with substance & written by Graham, look elsewhere.Whatever you do, I recommend checking this out from the library instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rooting for the bad guys
Characters in The Island are lacking such depth that it practically wants you to root for the bad guys. Seems like the author is writing for 12 year old girls, yet because of the adult situations, you know that's not true. If the setting had been an old haunted house, you would half expect to see the heroine walking backwards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a Journey, a fast paced journey!
Grabbed this book mainly because of the cover! I was in the mood for a mental vacation! This book is packed with suspense, some hot sex, and a lot of mystery! Page turner, and easy to read. HAPPY ENDING too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I've read this book--as well as the rest of the McKenzie saga--about four times now.Surrender is the next perfect continuation of the story.I love how Graham doesn't forget her previous characters and weaves them into each story she writes.I fell in love with Ian in Rebel, but fell more in love with Jerome. His fire and passion burn right through the pages.

I think the story could have been better had there been more interaction between Risa and Jerome. It seems they spend more time apart than they do together. And the times they do spend together, they are working against each other rather than making amends.

All in all, however, this is a wonderful story and quite a page turner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unlikable Main Characters
The "connection" between the hero and heroine of this book is disconcerting.Though their sexual encounters are told to be sizzling, all other behavior towards each other is consistently disrespectful and often intentionally hurtful. The author spends a considerable amount of time trying to convince the reader that Jerome and Risa are compassionate human beings, but they never display ANY kindness or tenderness towards each other. This is not my kind of love story.

2-0 out of 5 stars too many repetitions
This book has a nice begining (about 30 first pages out of about 300). What happens afterwards, seems a movement on a spiral. With a refren "you are a rebel; no, you are a rebel", all the sexual encounters of the heros consistenly occur in the same setting: close to water (ocean, lake - whatever). Plus several rather predictable splits and reconciliations. All in all it becomes a rather boring read. The historical setting is rather fresh (Florida, Civil War), however, it is described rather vaguely and not very believable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great one by Ms Graham!
"Surrender" is terrific! Oh, Jerome McKenzie, son of the brave, handsome James McKenzie, what a man! Risa Magee thought she was in love with Jerome's cousin, Ian McKenzie, who recently wed Southerner Alaina McMann. However, when Risa crosses paths with Jerome, the sparks are definitely lit and the dynamite is about to explode!!
Jerome's and Risa's story is exciting and suspenseful. As the sparks fly, you will definitely keep turning the pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly passionless romance
As romance novels go, this one wasn't bad.But it was definitely no page-turner either.

What I liked: I like historical romances, and to that extent, this book fit the bill. While I don't know how accurate the events in the book are, you got the feeling that you were getting a glimpse of history as you read.

I also liked Jerome. He's a very likeable character that made you want to read more about him.Risa was pretty likeable too even if the author did have her carry on a bit much about which side of the war each of them were on.The author infused a little mystery in the story that worked well, and had me interested in finding out what would happen next, and who was behind the dastardly deeds. She also had some decent scenes where Risa got herself into one scrape or another and Jerome had to get her out of it.It's because of these scenes that I liked Jerome.

What I didn't like:Jerome and Risa together didn't inspire much passion.Yes, there was some passion, but something was lacking in their interaction that made this book a little less than what it could have been.I think it's because the two characters didn't interact often enough in ways that would lead up to the type of passion typically seen in historical romances.Usually in these books, the sparks are flying when the two characters meet even though they fight off the growing feelings of love.In this book, while there were some sparks, they kind of fizzled, rather than grew into a raging fire.So it was hard for me to really care whether their romance grew into something meaningful or not.

I also didn't like the fact that the author had Jerome's sister involved in what could have been a decent subplot, but failed to deliver on it.I was left with questions about what happened with that part of the story. And to top it off, the book's ending was a little less than inspiring.

All in all, the pieces for a good story were all here, but the author didn't deliver. What you have is a fairly decent romance that you can pass the time with. But if you want a really good story, I suggest you look elsewhere. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in 3rd book
Graham is an excellent writer of characters. They are very well developed. Her historical facts and stories are also well written and interesting as they flow through her plots. My problem with "And One Rode West" was with Christa. Although her character was detailed and developed, I just didn't like her! I couldn't find any compassion and empathy for this spoiled, sarcastic and combative young woman. Jeremy was very likable, understanding, caring, loving and Christa didn't deserve the love of this nice guy. I couldn't see what Jeremy could love in her and in his place, from the get-go, I would have shipped her back to Virginia in a heartbeat. Honestly...I couldn't wait to be finished with this book. Sorry Ms. Graham and fans...

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful civil-war romance with great emotion
well, this is my first read of Ms. Graham book, also first read of civil-war love romance. Even this is the 3rd series, but I don't mind, this book has a great storyline, love/hate relation, and quite an adventure in the west and Indian territory. I really like a book when the couple has not state the three word "I love you" until the last last part of the book. That's make me want to read it until the last page ofcourse. And one more thing I learn from Ms. Graham's book comparing to other amazing authors, she write many love-scene without bored me, as each love-scene has different mood situation.

Christa has a strong, and brave personality even a bit stubborn, but its realistic. She remind me of Bronwyn in "Highland Velvet". And I like Jeremy too, coz I like the sound of his name.

My next collection of Heather Graham shall be "Runaway" & "captive", so let see will it be better than this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Favorite of the series
I read all three of these books and while I really really enjoyed the second one (the first was just okay) this third was my favorite. After reading the first two books I finally learned NOT to read the prologue, which always gives a glimpse from the pivotal scene of the book from one of the characters points of view, and then later you get the other person's point of view. I find it really distracting and misleading. You want to just continue from that exciting point and then she makes you go back to the beginning of the story, when you now have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen. I have no idea why the author does that. To create unnecessary tension and excitement to read the book quickly? Totally unnecessary and for me actually takes away from the journey.

This time I read the book without reading the prologue and was able to enjoy the story much more and I would still give it four stars. I really enjoyed seeing how the author was able to write a story about two people with such animosity towards eachother, but still draw the reader in and let them see the tenderness that really was inside of each one. You got to see the relationship grow. I also appreciate that while they may have been cruel to eachother, no one ever just gave up and walked away like a big baby. That simply wasn't an option (unlike some other romances I've read). It was exciting and quickly paced and I enjoyed the concept of them being forced into marriage by circumstances and then having to get to know eachother on a hard journey west.

These were great books, and aside from the cheesy inside cover (THANK YOU to the publisher for putting a normal cover on the very front... the cheeseball models always completely ruin the image I have in my head of what they look like) it is not just a historical romance. It was very good historical fiction as well (although pretty steamy in parts).

I have enjoyed this series by Heather Graham immensely and look forward to reading some of her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Part 3 of a trilogy; All 3 are 5 star reads; Terrific stories
I enjoyed this one as much as I did the previous 2 in this series. One of the best trilogies I've ever read. I hope you'll enjoy these as much as I did. Please share your reviews also. Reviews is what makes Amazon so wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better than Heather
Unlike other authors who attempt to write about our nation's darkest hour - the War Between the States - Heather Graham really knows the period, and her careful research is evident. She wraps up her trilogy in fine style with this third volume of the Cameron family saga with the tale of the younger sister, Christa.

Brothers Jesse, who fought for the Union ("One Wore Blue") and Daniel, who fought for the Confederacy ("One Wore Gray") are happy that the war's over and they can build a future with their wives, but what is left for Christa, who lost her fiance at Cold Harbor? Jeremy MacCauley, brother to Daniel's wife Callie, has also left his heart in the smoldering ashes of the war. In a desperate effort to save the Cameron estate from a carpetbagger, Jeremy and Christa throw themselves in a marriage of convenience....and ride off together for an adventure in the west that just might include the love of a lifetime!

With a great story, sensuous romance, and sympathetic characters, this is one not to miss. ... Read more

A stranger came riding. . .

Kristin McCahy was a fighter, struggling to keep the remnants of her family and ranch together as the Civil War raged around them. On the day when all hope seemed lost, a stranger rode to her rescue, his guns spitting fire and his eyes ablaze with a passion only she could quench.

His name was Cole Slater, and with him by her side, Kristin no longer had to fight her battles alone. Long after the gunfire faded into silence, Cole would be with her, as together they healed the wounds of their war-torn land and raised their children to greet the bright new dawn. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT TRILOGY - OF THE SLATER BROTHERS
Cole Slater is out for revenge and nothing is going to stop him.
That is until he saves and meets Kristin McCahy.

Zeke Moreau is a killer and rapist of the worst kind. He enjoys their pain. And he wants Kristin and he doesn't like being spurned, especially in front of his men.
Kristin and her sister hated Zeke because he and his gang had murdered their father, Gabriel McCahy.

She knew that she had to protect her 17 year old sister, Shannon from the maurading men. Even though she was only 18 herself. [Both girls were accurate shots and well trained in the use of guns.]

Her brother, Matthew had taken off and joined the Union Army. She was bound and determined to hold onto their ranch for Matthew no matter what it took.To help her was the freed slaves of her father, Samson and Delilah and their small child.

Cole knew that he had to move on before the trail got cold but maybe he could stop for a day or two and get a good meal. And this beautiful blonde gal was willing to make a proposition.Yup! he was willing to accept, but it would be by his rules.
With all their fighting and arguing it sure took them quite a while to figure out that they loved one another.

And the only way Cole could get Quantrill to rein in Zeke was to marry Kristin.Quantrill promised Cole that the McCahy girls would have his protection.

Then the Union Army stepped in.
The second part titled "The Lover" was a bit dragged out with all the emotional hang-ups before we began to see some real action again.Ah, but then Cole had to leave and so he called in his brothers, Malachi and Jamie who was only 20 years old.Never did get a take on Malachi's age.
All of this action starts in the summer of 1862.

Cole had a definite problem when he found out that Kristin had born him a son and not told him she was pregnant.
When he found Fitz he brought more trouble on himself and his brothers and of course his wife and sister-in-law.

This is an excellent story except for the dragging spots of the seductions, when I want action of the breath-stopping kind. Danger and romance go together but not prolonged emotional hang-ups. She just jumps in with both feet and hang the consequences.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [M] Shannon and Malachi's story follow in RIDES A HERO [1865] with Jamie's story follows that in APACHE SUMMER [1870].Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story...
This book for me was a turn on I LOVE the story line the dark stranger and the plot of it. I thought Cole was sexy strong breathtaking and just a good man, Kristin is a lovable heroine doing what she has to do for her family.. Great love scenes and i think if you like historicalromance novels (civil war) then this is for you and the thing is i'm not much of a civil war romance person....

3-0 out of 5 stars Promising story, but it fell flat
Reading an immediate love scene before any romantic tension is created always makes me feel like I'm outside of the story. It had potential, but I just didn't dig it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heather Graham delivers another hit!
Ms. Graham proves once again that she's a master of Civil War fiction with "Dark Stranger." Set against a usually-ignored theater of the war - Missouri - this novel seethes with sexual tension as well as the dark horror of the war. Missouri suffered the ravages of Quantrill's raiders and Lane's butchers, and Graham's heroine is caught in the crossfire. Graham easily achieves the usually-impossible task of creating a sympathetic hero from the nearly-savage and ruthless Cole by painting a vivid picture of the personal suffering so many men and women experienced in this war, and embodies the desperation of the women left to survive alone in heroine Kristin.

Ms. Graham's knowledge of the period is flawless and she blends history seamlessly into her story. Refreshing to see Civil War fiction that wasn't either sloppily researched, overpowering in detail, or overly burdened with attempts to be politically correct.

Bravo, Ms. Graham. Also recommend her "One Wore Blue" and "One Wore Gray."

4-0 out of 5 stars A little too simple, conflict lacking
It was a pleasure to read Dark Stranger.Even though the beginning is slow and nothing much happened except Kristin and Cole both wanting and hating each other, the second part of the book was a great read.I enjoy this book more than Runaway because Dark Stranger skipped most of the dull history. One thing I would criticize is the simplicity of the ending. There is not much meat and the conflict is resolved much quicker than I thought.A good ending, in my opinion, tightens a reader's breath, releases it, then tightens at least one more tme before everything is resolved, and this ending definitely does not fit my perspective of an ideal ending.I suggest the antagionist having revived when everybody thinks that he is dead, then the story would be much better.Nevertheless, very well-written...... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Wanted to personally castrate this main male character!!!!
I admit it, as with most of Heather Graham/Shannon Drake series books, I couldn't put this one down. However, I did agree with other reviewers in finding Ian spoiled, highhanded, and on occasion - completely obnoxious. I was disappointed with the plot twist of Ian constantly mooning over his ex - Risa, and found his behavior toward Alaina, who is an amazing woman, at times despicable. I closed the book still wanting to kick him in the gonads! I love Heather Graham, but I do get riled up over some of her heroes and their penchant for (almost) cheating. I actually find myself saying, "Yeah! Of course he didn't! Sure, right, Heather!" So if I, as the reader, don't believe it how in the world can the poor female character buy into his excuses, make "love" to him anyway? It then makes her character seem weaker and less appealing. I did not like Risa (the other woman) in this book. She was unconvincing as Alaina's "friend".I do like her very much in the next book of the series, where she meets Ian's cousin, Jerome, a blockade runner, and it seems the two portrayals in the back-to-back books don't match. She just made me want to slap her too in this book, and didn't find her opposed "sympathy" toward Alaina believable at all. At times, I wished they'd both run off together and leave poor Alaina to her life. I mean, Ian is a jerk! He is the one who is at fault for his "forced" marriage in the beginning, but completely blames poor Alaina and treats her horribly throughout the book! I love and hated this book. Can you tell??? This one just didn't convince me that it could be true love, and I expect him down the road to find other ways of abusing and cheating on his wife. Both the women are too good for him!
For the best of this series read, Captive. It is on my list of top five historical romances ever.

2-0 out of 5 stars troubled
I have read the first 2 books in this series...and loved them....I didnt hate this one but was very dissappointed and troubled.....I loved alaina"s character....was not impressed with risas(Ians first chose of a wife)and was agitated with Ian.....I felt that if he kept thinking of risa he should of let Alaina go....and with friends like risa who needs enemies....and then to have her hook up with Ians cousin in the next book...what the hell is that....heres a clue if ya going to marry be faithful,if not what is good for the goose is good for the wife....

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
This is probably one of my favorite Heather Graham books. Of course this is book #3 and I read it first....I like that both Ian and Alaina have their own views and are firm in their beliefs. Most women would have stood by their man without voicing their own opinions and not said a word. Both Ian and Alaina fought their own personal battles the way they chose to and in the end came together. I loved Julian in this book. I thought he provided some much needed comical relief at times. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars The McKenzie saga continues...
Ian McKenzie arrives home for a short visit from fighting on the Union side during the Civil War. At the beginning of his visit with his family he finds himself in a compromising position with a friend of the family's daughter, Alaina McMann, and to save her reputation and embarrassment to the 2 families he carries her off to be married. There is definitely attraction there and could grow to be a strong love but their strong opposing views of the war get in the way. Ian goes off to serve the Union side while Alaina begins participating in a smuggling ring for the Confederacy- and they clash each time they come together. Ian is handsome, strong and protective of Alaina while serving his devotion to the Union cause. He meets his match when he discovers that the Confederate spy he is working at capturing is non-only his own Alaina (this is revealed to the reader at the beginning of the book). The reader learns how Ian gets Alaina out of such a mess. Is their new love strong enough to survive such a test? And will Ian beable to save Alaina from the rope? They hang spies, you know! I enjoyed it. Great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebel -Another tale in the lives of the McKenzie clan
"Rebel" spins the story of Ian McKenzie and Alaina.Although not as much spice as "Captive," I enjoyed this book too.

Alaina was a tough and spirited Southerner loyal to the cause and Ian chose to join the Union's side.Although their views were different, their paths crossed and their lives were changed forever when they were caught "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Ian and Alaina are wedded and not in love at first, but as time passes, their love grows. However, where there is love, sometimes the pain comes along as well.Their love is no exception, especially during this time of war.Through it all, their love has to stand the test of time, war, betrayal, jealousy, as well as many other obstacles. Both Ian and Alaina have others in their lives vying for their love and to destroy the love that is shared between them. Will Ian and Alaina's new found love be enough to suffice and keep them together through the hardships they must endure?"Rebel" is worth reading to find out what is in store for these two courageous individuals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Night of The Blackbird
Found it a very interesting book, wasn't sure at first but as I read on I found it most compelling. I am never certain I am going to enjoy present day causes but Heather Graham knows how to keep her readersin suspense

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
This book was wayyy to political. I tried reading rather than skimming the political and historical parts, but there were too many. I think more thank half this book was just politics and history. Unless your into that, don't bother reading the book.

Also, there is no real plot. Let me rephrase that, there is a plot - Moira goes home for St. Patrick's Day with her current boyfriend and sees her old flame at home with her family. Then the author throws in an assassination attempt, but she keeps all the details hidden, so you have no idea what's going on till the last couple of pages - and it wasn't even a surprise - in fact, it was really obvious.

The author also has wayyy too many characters for one to keep track of who's who. And finally, there are alot of loose ends - like who killed Seamus and what was Patrick really up to.

Don't bother reading this book unless you have nothing better to do. And even then, just avoid it. It was that bad.

I would give his book 0 stars, but that wasn't an option

3-0 out of 5 stars Night of the Blackbird
I finished reading the book, but I was not that impressed with this one. The plot and the characters were not that interesting. I have read 5 of her books so far, and I loved the other 4.

3-0 out of 5 stars Way too political
Moira Kelly gets a guilt ridden phone call from her mother begging her to come back to Boston for St. Patrick's Day. For the very Irish Kelly family, this holiday is even more important than Christmas. Knowing that her father's health is failing and wanting to please her mother, Moira decides to change her plans to film her travel show in Florida, to a full look at St. Patrick's day celebrations in Boston.
Unfortunately, her visit is not a pleasant event. Dan O'Hara broke her heart some years ago, but he is back and ready to make a change. Moira has already moved on with the gorgeous Michael, whom she works with and who dotes on her lovingly.
Something is going on in her family's pub. The politics of Ireland are now in full force and someone among her is planning an assasination. The one person who knows anything mysteriously dies and Moira is left to suspect the one man she has loved nearly her whole life. Not knowing who to trust, Moira does some investigating of her own to find the killer, but what will it cost her?

This romantic suspense/mystery was a little more political than I enjoyed. The issues seemed to drone on about the Irish issues as if reading a text book concerning the continuing conflicts surrounding the dividing of Ireland.
Even with a number of red herrings, the plot was fairly predictable. Even the romance was not up to other Heather Graham novels.

Is it worth buying?
Unless you are very interested in Irish politics, the average reader may find this novel to be more wordy than it is suspenseful. Therefore, I do not recommend paying full price for Night of the Blackbird.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent suspense novel, not much understanding for the issues
Ms. Graham writes very engrossing suspense novels and this one is no exception. The characters are well developed and the story line full of twists and turns. She just doesn't have a real feel for the ethnicity of the characters, or so I feel.In spite of claims by some of the characters that they are not, she paints the Irish as revolutionaries to a man, most of them violent.Other than that, I recommend the book. ...
