5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd in Series - Powerful pirate love well told!
This was my first Heather Graham but it won't be my last.It is the second in the wonderful North American Woman series (Sweet Savage Eden #1, A Pirate's Pleasure #2, and Love Not A Rebel #3).This second one is set in 18th century America (Virginia) and the Caribbean, and it captivated me from page one.I never lost interest. It's the story of Lady Skye Kinsdale whose father has ordered her home to Virginia to marry a man he's promised her to from birth--a man she's never met. She's coming home aboard her father's ship from England where she has been at a finishing school. Before she leaves England her father has her wed by proxy to the man, Lord Roc Cameron, but she knows nothing of it.When her ship has nearly arrived, it is seized by pirate One Eyed Jack, a ruthless killer. But before he can have her, another pirate, Silver Hawk, retakes both vessels and holds Skye captive.Skye, who was trained to use a sword by the finest swordsman in Europe, can hold her own against the pirates, and does.Silver Hawk ("Hawk") admires her courage...and her golden haired beauty. But Hawk confuses Skye.On the one hand he is ruthless, rough and domineering and on the other he is gentle and honorable and holds her through her nightmares as she fears darkness.Unaware she's been wed to Lord Cameron, Skye finds herself attracted to the pirate scum (her word). And so the adventure begins...and it is a real adventure. The plot is intricate and has a major twist I did not see coming.I could not put it down and stayed up very late to read it.Once it was finished, I had to read it again--immediately.You won't regret buying this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worst of NAW series
I LOVED this series by Heather Graham overall, but I got annoyed this particular heroine. I was ready for the pirate captain dump her on some desert island to get rid of her she was so naggy and shrewish, with no particular redeeming qualities. I found their verbal sparring in the book annoying after a while, her constant unreasonable escape attempts silly (I mean, really???) You've on an island where you can see from the ship's window that its a pirate's lair with no possible means of escape other than to fall into worse hands, but you decide you're going to do it anyway - well, just because... Why? No explicable reason...) And then when the hero is playing duel roles, I found I just couldn't believe she wouldn't recognize his voice, something about his ways - even with a wig - that would give her a clue. AND - then he (spoiler) makes her think she might not be able to tell which man is the father of her child???? How cruel! That said, I LOVE this series. This book (in my opinion) is just the weak link.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pirates Pleasure Will Provide The Ultimate Pleasure and Fascinate you!
I have a three letter word that describes this book. "OMG!! Ok, "omg" is not a word but its the best word, letters, or slang to describe this fabulous book.

The man and the girl are not just perfect but born for each other. The chemistry is outrageous. Sky is one of my most favorite female characters so far. She is strong even though she does have a few weakness's but that does not stop her from fighting for what she wants. I won't add to much more because the first 2 chapters will tell you everything you need to know. I have read over 100 books this year so far and over 300 last year and this book was the most unpredictable. The twist in this book made A Pirates pleasure my favorite book of all time! If you have not read this book then please do asap. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars She turns romance into literature!!!
I have just recently discovered the wonderful Heather Graham and I have to tell you that she takes the romance novel to an entirely new level and dimension. Her alpha male heroes and ultra-sassy heroines are unforgettable, but more than that she turns this genre into literature. You can see the stories unfold as if you were watching an epic movie from the fifties with Technicolor and the best actors of the day.If only they made movies like this today, but alas there are no stars to portray these valiant characters and no directors clever enough to bring them to life.Lucky for us they come alive during the reading of Ms. Graham's spectacular stories.A Pirate's Pleasure is truly a masterpiece. It is beautifully written and one cannot wait to turn the page and see what new adventure awaits. The love story is captivating and tender and makes the reader feel the romance and the emotion.

Brava, Ms. Graham.I have just ordered several more of your books and cannot wait to indulge myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was great!
I was almost scared off this book by two things-- the one-star reviews and the hideously cheesy cover that I was afraid someone would see me looking at! Hide the cover with a paper bag and forget you ever saw it, because it is not indicative of the story's worth. This book was well-written and engaging from the very first page. The plot line was actually so well concealed that I was completely taken by surprise at where it was going, in a very, very good way. After reading the book, I went back and re-read the one-star reviews and realized that those women had either given up and thrown the book away (gasp!) before they got to the plot spoiler, OR they were feminists who were much MUCH to eager to cry rape. There absolutely was NO rape in this book.

This is a great book, despite the cover, and gave me two days of mini-vacation right in my house. I definitely recommend it; you will be happy you gave it a chance! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb North American Woman Romance (1st in Series)
I have become a real fan of Heather Graham's work and believe this North American Woman series (Sweet Savage Eden, A Pirate's Pleasure and Love Not A Rebel) is one you will really enjoy. This is the first book in the series and I just loved it.It's Jasmine's ("Jassy") and Jamie's story which begins in 17th century England and leads to the New World, Virginia to be precise.Jassy does not want to marry the dark Lord Cameron and thinks herself in love with his friend the fair Robert, but she is only the bastard daughter of a dead nobleman and she doesn't want to die in starvation and poverty like her mother, so she consents.Jamie Cameron wants the beautiful Jassy...she makes his blood boil, and her wild spirit reminds him of Virginia, the land he has come to love where he is building a life.He thinks she will be strong enough to endure the life in the wilderness where there are still Indians and pressures to survive. However, Jamie does not tell Jassy, who longs for the security of Jamie's beautiful manor in England, that he is taking her to America. She does not love him.She does not even like him and is honest that she is marrying him so she will not starve. Can she love a man she hates? Can she forget the fair Robert? Can Jamie love the tavern wench who wants only his wealth? So begins an adventure that is so well told and so well done, I will read it again and again.Heather Graham's writing is just superb. Her portrait of early America is wonderful. The story pulls you in and does not let you go.There are no slow spots as the action and characters become so real. The sexual tension permeates the book and is very believable. You love Jassy and Jamie and you will find yourself drawn back to those historical times at the beginning of America.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made me cry!
One of the best of Heather Graham for sure! Could not put this one down - in spite of, at times, wanting to personally castrate the main character, Jamie. He's hard-nosed, obnoxious, and downright mean to Jassie, but Graham brings it together so well at the end and has enough depth of characterization that in spite of the hero's decidely unheroic behavior at times, we do begrudgingly understand him. My hatred of him, at times, made me obsessively keep turning pages! Could not put it down. Not for you if you don't like borderline rape scenes, obsession and controlling male characters. That said, I found Jamie to be just the type of man who came to conquer the New World, and had the type of personality it would have required. My hat's off to Graham for this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic disappointment.
I read this for the first time as a teenager--pilfered it from the paperbacks section of the library, actually. As a hormone-ruled young man confused about his sexuality and fascinated by the dangerous sensuality of Jamie Cameron, I really enjoyed the book as a teen. Now, over a decade later, I picked up a new copy of the book and found myself shaking my head in annoyance over the same character I'd found so fascinating.Overall the story lacks in many areas, but it's the relationship between Jassy and Jamie that baffles me.Their conversations are unrealistic (and that's after the typical suspension of disbelief one wields when diving into historical romance) and utterly lacking in any flow or chemistry, and Jamie is pointlessly cruel and stubborn in ways that do nothing to flesh out his character. You don't expect romance-novel males to be realistic; that's part of the fun. They're a fantasy.I just can't imagine Jamie Cameron as anyone's ideal fantasy, when he offers very little to make him sympathetic--and very little to make him believably strong and powerful other than his own wanking on about how he takes what he wants and does what he wants.Any compassion or kindness that he shows in an effort to make him sympathetic to the reader just comes off as a sneering, smirking game to toy with Jassy even more.He displays little to no remorse when it's demonstrated that his treatment of her, in many cases, is wholly unjustified. The part near the end, after the (SPOILER) birth of their son, when things seem to be getting better until he abruptly decides to distance himself and dismiss Jassy back to England really just comes out of nowhere and seems to make little sense and have little motivation other than the author's desire to create one more rift between them that's solved by the final conflict.

I'm not a big fan of the flat, one-dimensional portrayal of characters such as Hope or Powan, either--and I'm not saying that just because I'm part Native.I'm looking at them from a professional writer's perspective, not an offended Native American's (the research put into that aspect was actually quite good, and I have to agree with the tribe member's review there). It's the characters themselves and not the depiction of their culture that lacks.

The sex is steamy, even if full of the vague euphemisms one expects.(Isn't that part of the fun of romance novels?Removing the messier, more awkward aspects of sex to focus on the better parts?)Oddly, as a boy I didn't like Jassy much. Now that I'm older I find myself enjoying her more, down to the point of feeling terrible for her after the way Jamie treated her despite the fact that she's a bit of a stubborn, stuck-up brat.I also loved Elizabeth and would have loved to see more of her character.Jassy's half-brother, on the other hand, seemed to suffer from the same melange of unnecessary cruelty and jerkishness as Jamie, while people constantly excused him for it.Yes, sometimes characters will be jerks, just as sometimes real people are jerks. But these two lacked reason and depth, and the story was presented as if their actions were supposed to make sense when, in truth, they didn't.

I'm rating this 3/5 for three reasons:

1. This book introduced me to Heather Graham, who's become one of my favorite romance novelists;
2. despite my complaining, parts of it were enjoyable (and I don't just mean the passionately depicted sex); and
3. sheer nostalgia, as despite finding more to criticize with age, this book brought back many fond memories of my youth.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is books has absolutely no SUSPENSE
I'll admit, I was intrigued the for the first 20 or 30 pages of the book when you first meet this supposedly drop dead gorgeous poor young orphan. However, after the 2 handsome strangers jerk her away to meet her "rich" estranged family all the suspense dies there. There is absolutely NO PLOT in this book and the romantic dialogue in the book certainly does NOT make you blush! So if the books is free, try it, but if its not, don't waste your hard earned money!

5-0 out of 5 stars HistoricallyCorrect
I am a Pamunkey Indian and I wish to commend Ms. Graham for her research and correct use of the Tribe in her book. This is the ONLY book I have ever seen that uses the Tribe name and the history of our people. We are the forgotten tribe.I love to read historical romances and this is one of the best I have ever read.I had to buy the book again as my last copy began to fall apart from my constant rereading of it. ... Product Description

These masters of romantic suspense deliver three dangerously addictive new stories that will keep you... On the Edge

HEATHER GRAHAM: "Will they make it? And if they do, how on earth will they manage? And last, but never least, will they survive together? The combination of romance and suspense is irresistible. I love the genre, and hope to give back just a percentage of the pleasure I've enjoyed over the years."

CARLA NEGGERS: "Romantic suspense has it all--a great love story, interesting characters, pulse-pounding action, a sense of adventure and drama and more than a dash of fun. I love to write romantic suspense, and I love to read it."

SHARON SALA: "Writing romantic suspense is, for me, a challenge, both creatively and emotionally. I love the freedom of developing stories that not only challenge the reader to figure out 'who done it,' but also, to give them characters that they will never forget."

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Anthology !!!
On The Edge:3 Novels in1 by Heather Graham was a really good anthology.I enjoy books like this one.I am such a bookworm! The characters were great !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 enjoyable stories.
These 3 stories were fairly short but readers are not left feeling short changed. The characters felt real and the action was fast paced.
I recommend reading this book.It has romance and mystery, and a cast of secondary characters that makes me feel like perhaps there will be a sequel to some of the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for the sun.
This book contains three (not two) enchanting tales of romantic suspense that are just perfect for light summer reading.

In the first entry by Heather Graham, Kit Delaney returns to the home she was born in and the family she is estranged from after the untimely death of her beloved father. There she begins a relationship with David Moore an enigmatic member of the household whose purposes are not entirely clear to her.She also engenders the enmity of at least one of her relatives -all of whom are afraid she will cheat them out of their rightful inheritance. The question is how far they will go to get Kit out of the picture and wether David can or will come to her rescue.

In "Shelter Island" the second tale, by Carla Neggers, Dr.Antonia Winter believes she is being stalked. She is afraid to ask for help because of the repercussions that a false alarm might have on her medical career and on the political aspirations of her new suitor, Hank Callahan. When she secretly retreats to an old cottage, belonging to a friend, on Shelter Island she is followed by Hank and by her stalker. Who will get to her first?

The last story, bySharon Sala, "Capsized",is myfavorite.Kelly Sloan is a DEA agent in an undercover operation that goes sour when a released prisoner whom she put away recognizes her. After three days of torture she manages to escape and swim to shore in Texas where she is rescued by Quinn McCord, a Texas Ranger with problems of his own. Together they must outwit the drug kingpin who has offered a two million dollar reward for Kelly's murder, in time for Kelly to testify against Dominic Ortega. The sparks fly in this tale of love and revenge.

These three tales are a good value for light, fun summer reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great romantic suspense anthology
"Bougainvillea" by Heather Graham.Almost two decades ago her mother drowned. Her father never explained why, but he left their Bougainvillea home and never returned. With his recent death, his daughter Katherine "Kit" Delaney goes back to the family home. There she meets David Moore, a friend from her childhood. As they fall in love, Kit's tragic past catches up to her present fueled further by her doubts about whose side her beloved is on.

"Shelter Island" by Carla Neggers.Dr. Antonia Winter feels someone is stalking her.Not wanting to hurt her boyfriend's run for the senate with unsubstantiated stories, Antonia decides to leave for Shelter Island for awhile. However, Hank Callahan would rather not be a politician if he must give up his beloved Antonia. With a hurricane coming and a stalker following Antonia, Hank has his work cut out for him if he wants to keep her safe.

"Capsized" by Sharon Sala.In Mexico, DEA Agent Kelly Sloan realizes her cover is blown, which means she needs to escape before Ortega disposes of her in his malevolent manner. She manages to get to the sea, but drifts for three days before being found by Texas Ranger Quinn McCord. As she recovers her strength she and her male nurse fall in love, but Ortega and his in-law Gruber need her dead.

All three tales are taut romantic suspense thrillers that will please sub-genre fans except for the fact that readers will know each one could have been a stand-alone full-length novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars I did not know this book...
was like the 6th in a series. Hence, I did not know many of the characters and was overwhelmed by the quantity of them. If the story stayed with Tia and Taylor, I would have been OK but the author kept bringing in characters from past books that I knew nothing about. I stopped reading after a rape scene of a husband and wife (I guess he saved her from jail in the last book). I just was not interested enough to keep going - the men were a bit too rough & mean in this book for my taste. I know someone else critized the rape scenes too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Ending
This is the perfect ending to the McKenzie saga.Although I was hoping for a story about Sydney, Tia takes the main stage and runs with it.She is not immune to the hard times of the war, and makes a stand all on her own. And Taylor isn't too shabby himself.I wasn't able to put this book down at all.I think I read it in the manner of two days.Graham is a wonderful story teller.

There were some odd things that happened towards the end of the book, and I am hoping that it was the printer's fault and not Ms Graham forgetting her character names.Ian's youngest daughter is named Katie (I think), and at the end of the book is called Kelly. When Tia tells Jarrett she is pregnant again for the 5th time, Jarrett hopes that it is a girl after 4 boys--but Tia's first child is a girl.

The McKenzie saga is one of the best stories I have ever read.I am very sad to see it end.I hope that Ms Graham one day continues the McKenzie saga with the grandkids--Sean, Jamie, and the rest of the kids.

2-0 out of 5 stars mediocre end to a cookie-cutter series
I read the first two books in this series ("Runaway" and "Captive") and enjoyed them very much--the author lives in Florida and is obviously a serious student of Florida history. However, once she started writing about the "next generation" of the McKenzie family, it was as though she ran out of ideas for plot and characterization. Honestly, except for the different names (and by the way, some of those names were just a bit too 20th-century for these novels!) the plot line and the characters were totally interchangeable in every one of the four novels set during the Civil War. From the author's description, all the males looked very much alike (how convenient!) and every story started out the same way--the hero and heroine despise each other because they are on opposite sides of the conflict, but it doesn't take very much for said hero and heroine to hit the sheets! Because "Triumph" was the last novel in this series, the author has several stories to deal with, (as well as several sets of lovers!) and every one of them is the same--conflict between man and woman because one supports the North and the other the South! Ms. Graham, there's a little novel called "Gone With the Wind" which was set during the Civil War, was very fascinating, and had lots of interesting characters and plot lines. Guess what? There were lots of different reasons why relationships didn't work out in that novel, and not one had to do with the fact that one person supported the North and one the South! It's unfortunate that this series didn't have more imaginative plot lines and character development; it could have been quite memorable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the McKenzie girls take the lead
"Triumph" is Tia McKenzie's story. Tia is Jarrett's daughter. Tia is just as headstrong and brave as those McKenzie men. Tia has a mission and sets out to get it done. She upholds her beliefs and her commitment to the cause she believes in. Tia's path crosses with Taylor Douglas. They are on opposite sides, but so are many close knit families and friends. Taylor succumbs to Tia's charms and Tia is drawn to Taylor. The two young people have many obstacles, but love is their greatest weapon. Will their love "triumph" in the end and overcome their problems?

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast moving, good history, but...........
I have always enjoyed Heather Graham's books. Especially the trilogy of One Wore Blue etc. I just picked this one up at the store, not realizing this too was part of a series. While the book held my interest and I wanted to continue through the end, I found it a bit frustrating. With all the T names, Taylor, Tia, Teela and Tara and the R's, Ria and Rhiannon things started to blur together. When the names of five or six family members started to appear on each page, I felt the author was rushing to squeeze in too much, too fast. Also at the end, it says that Tia named her first daughter Hope. But a few pages later, it seems unclear when it says that they were happy to have four sons and finally a daughter.I definitely am a Heather Graham fan and will look for more of her books, but hope that the next one takes it a bit slower. There was a distinct feeling that there was a rush to get every detail of each character settled before the end of the book.It was an ambitious project to be sure, but in some cases, I felt that it took away from the story of Tia and Taylor, who by the way, were two very appealing characters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Heather Graham!!! On my top ten list!
I read this book when it came out, and since, have thoroughly enjoyed rereads! This is - in my opinion - Heather Graham'Shannon Drake's at her best! The story is well plotted, excellently researched (I am a Florida native) and the characters are amazingly well drawn. James/Running Bear's tragic character and the way he is torn between two worlds, is very painful and realistic. The horror and tragedy of Florida's Seminole Wars is viscerally captured by Graham, as well as the pain of two lovers whose circumstances seem insurmountable. A story of obsessive, impossible love, along with the very real tragedy of the times, could not be better told!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anything but Candy Coated!
James McKenzie was raw and passionate and oh so sexy. I love it when the author makes the hero "a real man". There are not many romantic books surrounding the Florida wars, I am glad Ms. Graham sprung that time to life. The Seminoles were among the bravest warriors and the injustice that was thrust into their lives should never be forgotten. Again, this as an excellent read but if you are light hearted and cant handle gritty love scenes, this is not for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rich with historical information but romance too much like Runaway....
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book and I plan on continuing the Florida series but the relationship between main characters, James and Teela was far too similar to the previous Jarrett and Tara's.I was hoping to discover a completely new and fresh approach to the dynamics between the lovers in this story but was a little dissapointed. Nevertheless, Heather again incorporates this fictional love story with real life events and peoples from Florida's past.I think Captive's theme was about overcoming all obstacles in order to obtain peace within and true love.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down
Make sure you read "Runaway" first because you are introduced to James "Running Bear " McKenzie in it and he like his brother is hot. Jarrett and Tara are also in it so loved that as well.I loved this story and the detail Heather Graham puts to it.You feel as if you are there. I can't wait to finish the series.

3-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Heather Graham/Shannon Drake book I enjoy
Heather Graham's books are all so alike that I recognised her writing as Shannon Drake before I even knew they were the same person. Her half-breed indian books always go something like:
Brawny Hero: "You hate me because I'm an indian."
Simpering female: "um...what?" as she tries to distract herself from his massive muscles and tanned skin.Of course this never works because he ususally wrestles her forcibly into bed and practically rapes her- but don't worry- she enjoys it in the end.

I can't say Captive was any different from her other books, but it was done so much better. For one, it was actually romantic, and I could see (without having to be told) that the characters attracted to each other.Amazingly enough, I found Teela rather compelling- no she was no rocket scientist, but that's really to much to expect from Shannon Drake- er- Heather Graham.

The thing that annoyed me the most about the book is the reappearence of some of her previous characters. It's been, like, thirty years and they still look like they're twenty? Please. If Ms. Graham can't bear to age her characters, she shouldn't add them into her books.

If you're going to read any of Heather Graham's books, read this one. It's decent, the only decent one that I've read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!
Heather Graham is a genius! I forgot to put her on my list of authors of "favorites".She had written this book and The Vikings Woman several years ago and I just read it recently.OH MY STARS!! It had me on the edge of my seat and attacking my hubby. I wish she would write some more like these two.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money:( !!
...or your time into reading this book. It took all the grid I had to finish this one (I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't). The plot was so promising, but the heroine was dumb as a boot and extremely self-centered, and never grew up. By the end of the story I was hoping our wonderful viking hero would wake up and leave her on the mercy of her enemies. Melisande keeps repeating herself in all the conversations, so it felt like I was reading the same page over and over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 and 1/2 stars - 3rd in the Viking Trilogy - Great Viking Romance!
This is the third in Graham's Viking trilogy (Golden Surrender, The Viking's Woman and Lord of the Wolves). Set in 9th century Ireland (Eire), England and the north coast of France, these are the stories of Prince Olaf of Norway, the first Lord of the Wolves, and his bride, Princess Erin, daughter of the Irish High King, the Ard-Righ of Tara, and their descendants. I warn you that the Viking men are strong willed, arrogant and domineering, even if those in the last two books are half Irish. Their loves are independent, stubborn and courageous women who have lost much and still can fight with the best of the men. They have no intention of allowing a Viking male who has taken everything from them dominate them. But then wolves and the cubs of wolves mate for life or so says the druid who is advisor to the Irish king's family--and these men are wolves. Each of the marriages is arranged over the objection of the females who fight the husbands who have laid claim to their lands and to them. This third in the series tells the story of Olaf and Erin's son, Conar, who like his father is known as the Lord of the Wolves for he has been great in battle, and Countess Melisande whose castle lies on the north coast of France.Melisande's father, Count Manon, a virile and handsome man, loves his daughter deeply and takes pride in her beauty (which is considerable), her intelligence and her independence. At nearly 13, he knows her growing beauty and her vulnerability as Countess will require that she must one day wed and he's been surveying worthy candidates for the eventual day. With such a purpose in mind, he invites the Wolf's son, Conar, from Eire (Ireland) who he's been impressed with before, to visit his lands in France and meet Melisande. He will not force her to consider him if she doesn't like him, however.Melisande does not know that.Conar arrives just as the Count is slain by a neighbor who covets his daughter and his lands. With the Count's men now leaderless, they decide Melisande must marry Conar (though the marriage cannot be consummated for many years), as Conar will protect the lands.Melisande, who takes an instant dislike to the arrogant and demanding Viking, is forced into the marriage.Conar is willing to marry the difficult child to get the lands.Once wed (in a hasty ceremony), he sends her away to Ireland to his sister who is a nun so she can grow up.His family falls in love with her and many years later he decides to come for her.But she has escaped to his brother, Eric, in England and has no intention of being Conar's wife in truth. She wants an annulment. But Conar will "never' let her go.My only problem with this oneof the three books is that I never read a single conversation between Conar and Melisande that was not a fight over some demand of his.He gave his body to his mistresses and his mind and heart to his family and his rune reader, the lovely blonde Brenna. So when he decides he loves Melisande, I'm wondering, based on what?great sex?Apparently.Anyway, it does come together in the end but it's a bit of a stretch getting there. In the other books in the trilogy, the couples seemed to find some things in common to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Heather, exactly what I would expect!!!!!
I have been a Heather Graham fan for sometime now and I look forward to her books. She takes you to the era in which the event take place and as you read you are truly there. When you read her books, you just can't put them down until you have finished the entire book. She keeps her audience turning the pages; one after the other, over and over.

I will continue to purchase her books and will anticipate each and every moment as I read them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT, GREAT BOOK!
This was Heather Grahams third book in the Viking Series. First was Golden Surrender (which I thought was the best out of the three), Second is The Vikings Woman, and Third is The Lord of the Wolves. This Series has been my favorite series for a long time now. If you like Alpha Males, then this book is good for you. Heather Grahams writing style is fabulous! She knows how to keep her readers attention on each and every page. I loved this book, one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars #3 in the SLATER BROTHERS TRILOGY - JAMIE SLATER
Lieutenant Jamie Slater and Jon Red Feather are alerted to the smoke.
A small burned out wagon train. Dead cattle, dead bodies - looks like no survivors.Another Indian attack.

No survivors that is until he meets up with a hell-cat. Tess Stuart thinks he is one of the attackers. She sure means to defend herself.

After he subdues her, he finds out that she claims that the attackers were Von Heusen's men. Jon Red Feather informs Jamie the she is talking about Richard von Heusen, who calles himself a rancher.Von Heusen also wants the Stuart ranch.

They take her to the fort where she meets up with Dolly Simmons who is determined to accompany Tess to Wiltshire.Tess also meets Eliza Worthingham, Jamie's former lover, who is determined to have him, permanently.

Things heat up - when they get to the ranch in Wiltshire, von Heusen shows up and is backed down by Jamie and Jon.Well the hormones play a big factor in glueing the plot together which leads to some arguements [as usuall]. But she does sign over half of the ranch to Jamie, tieing up all her inheritance to prevent von Heusen from acquiring any of her property.

Yup! von Heusen's men are at it again as they abduct Tess and take her to the Comancheros who will in turn sell her to the Apache, Nalte.Nalte wants a blond, white woman for his bride.

It is a tale to be unfolded - but Jamie rescues Tess and makes friends with the Apache, Nalte and boy, what a show down when his brothers, Cole and Malachi show up with their wives and children to face down von Heusen and his gunslingers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--M -- a great trilogy if you can get through all the emotionally mixed-up hormones and the aftermath.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good History
This book and the two sequels that follow it are typical Heather Graham, which is good news to those of us who enjoy her writing.
In addition to the personal stories in each book, the American history in which the characters are involved is handled very well. Graham can see the several sides of the history at the time her characters live - during and after the Civil War.
She is one of the better historical romance writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good book!!
This is the last book in the trilogy of the Slater brothers and I have to admit it that it's one of my favorites of Heather Graham's. Tess Stuart is beautiful, strong-willed and knows what she wants and it's Jamie Slater. Jamie Slater is really a great hero, he's sexy, a litte bit arrogant but tender at the same time. Dark Stranger (the first in the trilogy)with Cole and Kristin is another favorite of mine, so i recommend that one too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slater Brothers Lasaga continues...Jamie & Tess's story
The sequel to Rides A Hero - the story continues. Though the Civil War is over Jamie has continued a lieutenant on the frontier of Texas protecting settlers during Indian raids. His 2 older brothers settled down but Jamie never found the one he couldn't live without so he's still single. While traveling with her rich uncle Tess Stuart's wagon train is raided and her uncle is murdered. It is left to look like an indian massacre but Tess knows better. The man who owns the town has been harrassing the Stuarts for a while now to sell out their ranch to him but they have refused. Now Tess is left to advenge her homeland herself. But she can't do it by herself. What better person to help her than one of the Slater Brothers who are know to be able to handle a gun. Tess's spirited personality captures Jamie's heart and the battle is on. The reader even "sees" Cole and Malachi show up with their families to help Jamie out. So it's good seeing the family come together once more. Kristin and Shannon still prove to be spirited themselves. It's a lot of fun reading-one I think you will enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This author is a ONE of a kind!
I love this book and did not put it down till I read it. Vikings, Highlanders, Vampires, shape shifters, and then brought into love stories is great. This book is based on how things were for women back in the era of Vikings. Women were married off by their fathers, brothers, uncles. But I love this book and you are truly an awesome writer.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 and 1/2 stars - 2nd in the Viking Trilogy - Great Viking Romance!
This is the second in Graham's Viking trilogy (Golden Surrender, The Viking's Woman and Lord of the Wolves).Set in 9th century Ireland (Eire), England and the north coast of France, these are the stories of Prince Olaf of Norway, the first Lord of the Wolves, and his bride, Princess Erin, daughter of the Irish High King, the Ard-Righ of Tara, and their descendants.I warn you that the Viking men are strong willed, arrogant and domineering, even if the two in the last two books are half Irish.Their loves are independent, stubborn and courageous women who have lost much and can fight with the best of the men. They have no intention of allowing a Viking male who has taken everything from them to dominate them. But then wolves and the cubs of wolves mate for life or so says the druid who is advisor to the Irish king's family and these men are wolves. Each of the marriages is arranged over the objection of the females who fight the husband who has laid claim to their lands and to them. This, the second story tells of Rhiannon, King Alfred's favorite niece who has lands on the Saxon coast of England, and Eric, second son of Olaf, King of Dubhlain in Eire (who we encountered in Golden Surrender).Alfred seeks Eric's aid to fight against the Danes, his enemies, and to defend Rhiannon's lands as most of her men are fighting with Alfred. But the message to tell Rhiannon that Eric is coming at Alfred's invitation is diverted through treachery and when Eric comes to her castle in his Viking ships, she thinks he's attacking and she defends. In the ensuing fight, she wounds him with her own arrow. When Alfred learns how Eric was greeted, he knows he must make up for it as he needs Eric's sword. So he decides to give both Rhiannon and her lands to the Viking lord. But while Eric wants the land badly, he does not want the woman. He has loved once and lost that love and does not desire to wed. And, Rhiannon loves one of her own people, Rowan, who she believed she would marry.Eric consents to the marriage thinking he'll send Rhiannon to Ireland and be rid of her.She is forced to marry him in a hasty ceremony. As predicted, Eric does not treat her well. The wedding night is somewhere between a seduction and a rape (it has elements of both). It is a battle between them for most of the book. But love wins in the end.Graham's writing is, as always, very well done with superb historical references woven into a love story that befits the cultures of the hero and heroine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book.
This was one of my first romance novels I read as a teen. A really fun and cheesy read, as only a historical romance novel can be.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was fine...
I remember reading the other reviews of this book on here and hesitating. One reviewer said she hated how the male lead, Eric, had been in love with another woman and was thinking of her throughout the book -- I think they mention that previous woman all of three times.Another reviewer (or it may have been the same one?) mentioned that she hated the domestic violence in the book -- Eric grabs our girl, Rhiannon, by the hair a time or two but there's no spanking or slapping or anything like that.Eric threatens all that of course but it's all bluster on his end.And let's remember the time period we're dealing with here and the fact that it's just this manly control that's attracting a lot of women to these kinds of historical romance novels. It's a fantasy so let's not be judgmental.

Now that I've defended the book, now let me rip it apart.Actually, no, this was a decent romance novel.I liked it.It wasn't the best I've ever read but it wasn't the worst either.I don't know if I'm happy I paid full price for it but that's another story. In fact, in total opposition to the other reviewers, my main problem with this romance novel was all the romance-y, touchy feely stuff.I'm just getting back into romance novels (I read them a lot when I was a teen) and what I seem to remember is the passion and arguments of two people fighting their feelings for each other but not saying how much they love each other "oh, and could this be true, my own love" etc, etc for pages on end.Again, not to judge, maybe it's just me, but I skipped over those pages. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it.
I loved the book. It did get a little slow and I skipped over a few words now and then, due to some of the words just kept repeating it self in my opinion. I enjoyed all 3 books and would love to read more of her stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Night Heat is three complete novels in one book.I love it when author do this.I would never have paid for all three books separately. The first and third stories were great and I enjoyed them greatly.I was a little disappointed in the second one. It tended to drag, and I didn't much care for it.It does however tie the other two together. If these were separate books, I would have stopped at book two becuase I would have figured book three would be more of book two.I think the first and third stories make this book worth your time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for
This repackaging of three older novels by Grahm was disappointing. Her more recent novels, such as Tall, Dark, and Deadly were a fun mix of romance and suspense. That's what I expected when I picked this book up. Instead, I found three formulaic love stories. The so-called suspense in each was hardly worth it. The chemistry between the couples was nearly non-existent. Out of the three stories, the best was the middle one, starring Wendy Hawk and Brad McKenna. Though the plot was predictable, (of course he was going to fit in to her world and of course his love would make her forgether dead husband) it was the best of the three. The connection between the characters (they all come back in Borrowed Angel, the last of the tales) is cute- it is sometimes nice to catch up with old characters. All in all, not terrible as a diversion, but not the best romance novel around. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars abridged audio is AWFUL!!!
Listening to the abridged version of this book was like listening to someone choose random bits and pieces out of a story, not even finishing one thought before jumping to some unrelated one. It was awful. Nor did it help that Juliet Mills was the reader on the cassettes. I enjoyed her in old television shows, but she has no talent doing voices. Sheer torture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forgettable
I read this about a month ago and had to scramble my brain to remember what it was about. When you forget the plot of a book a few weeks after you've read it you know it was not worth your time. The book details way too much history of the civil war in Florida--this got tedious and boring.

The romance just didn't work. It was unrealistic that Jarrett McKenzie the hero hunk had to win a wife in a poker game. The dialgoue, writing and plot were predictable. This is your typical, lousy, run of the mill romance novel. Better than the worst i've read but i would not recommend this book. Definitely not worth the overall 4 star rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
I forced myself to finish this book, because I always believe that a book has potential and it might get better.Well this one didn't.I don't think I have ever read a heroine who delighted more in making herself miserable. For the majority of the book every word out of her mouth to her husband is in anger, with endless threats and cruel words. Then she feels bad about what she says and then yells at him again, then wails over her bad relationship with himThe husband delights in being punished because he puts up with the shrew, laughs when she insults him, and can't stop sleeping with her even when she talks badly about his former wife, whom he loved. Then all of a sudden, oh my gosh, she loves him, where did that come from? This woman is completely unlovable, untrustworthy, and I suppose we were supposed to feel sympathetic to her, because she was running (always running) from her past. However we never really know what she is running from so any sympathy is lost with her racism towards Native Americans and her willingness to be nice to ANYONE except the man who saved her from the bad guys. Oh yes, everybody loves her at first sight because shes pretty and that excuses her behavior in almost every situation.
I couldn't wait for the book to end just so I could finish it and get it over with.It wasn't just the lack of romance between the characters, but the story was so dry and predictable.I found myself skipping page after page describing the history of Florida.I like history, but a lot of it wasn't necessary and 8 pages is a bit much.
I'm not going to judge an author on one book, but I was very disappointed with this one and I will be hesitant in reading anything of hers again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good incorporation of history and romance but........
I immediately liked this book because it was about Florida which is a state that I am very fond of and because my parents are moving there soon, I was even more intrigued to find out about this exotic land's past.I think that if you are a person who is drawn to stories with adventure and mystery, this is a good book for you but be aware that the main focus of the story is the passionate and confusing relationship of the two main characters. There was a lot of sex involved to say the least but it was done with taste. My only complaint is that by the middle of this book I grew annoyed and bored of the extreme love/hate romance between Jarrett and Tara. The constant "I wanted to rip his eyes out and touch his brozed muscles at the same time" attitude of Tara was overdone but nearing the end of the book I fell in love with the characters and felt the ending was very compelling.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very exciting
This was the first Heather Graham book I read.I didn't care for it very much.In fact, I was half way through and decided it was no longer worth my time.I think there's potential for me to like the author....just not this book. The reasons for the antagonism between the two main characters was stupid. They were fighting over really dumb things.I love history and romance and lived in Florida for awhile so it looked like a good book.

I've ordered a couple other of the author's books because I see the potential for good writing.I hope I like them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read in One Day
This was my first Heather Graham book and it knocked me out! It took about 6 hours to read it in basically one sitting. I felt as if I was with the family throughout their horrific ordeal. I look forward to finding another heart stopping mystery by Heather Graham! She is great!

4-0 out of 5 stars What?No spooks?
Having had read four of Ms Graham's novels, I was expecting some kind of paranormal twist, maybe at least some Dickens type of Christmas ghosts. But no, such was not to be this time around. One reviewer found this reminiscent of the stage play and movie, THE PETRIFIED FOREST, but I found it much more reminiscent of another stage play and movie, THE DESPERATE HOURS because of the common theme of parents...more the mother in this book which is to be expected from Heather Graham...protecting their children during a home invasion by gangsters.Be that as it may, this is a well written Christmas thriller. The three thieves are especially well drawn, and the desire of two of them to have a sham Christmas celebration complete with dinner and presents in spite of the probability that the family will be slaughtered before the bad guys leave.Basic predictability makes this a four star rather than five star book for me.However, the downplaying of the romantic part of the plot will make this more acceptable to guys like myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars I was on the edge of my seat!
Heather Graham is obviously a master of suspense as indicative by this book. I loved it! The tension began right at the beginning and continued to build until the very end.

The characterization was just as masterful. The story is centered around a very typical family dynamic. Dad is too harsh. Mom just wants her family together. The kids can hardly stand one another or stand being around their family. I think anyone could relate to these characters.

I was drawn in by the suspense and by the way this family pulled together when in danger. This book is truly worth reading. I highly recommend this holiday thriller. It was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving family Christmas story
I thought The Last Noel was great. And the writer on the fly leaf is gorgeous. There were pleasant surprises and a story line that I thought was predictable, yet often took a twist that surprised me.It was a very enjoyable read that I finished in one sitting. The story was uplifting and warm.I enjoyed it very much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lightweight Suspense
The Last Noel by Heather Graham is about a dysfunctional family that is taken prisoner in their vacation home on Christmas Eve by a band of jewel thieves with guns. The thieves have just killed a man and are looking for a safe place to wait out a New England snowstorm. The book is kind of schmaltzy-- the family decides to continue having their Christmas Celebration as if there were no men with guns holding them prisoner. One of the bad guys is a Joe Pesci-like character who is excited about taking part in a family Christmas. Even the lead bad guy wants to have a turkey Christmas dinner. The third guy has a history with a member of the family, a young woman, Kat, with whom he had a very serious love affair before he broke it off without warning.

Kat is an extremely annoying and stupid young woman. At first the bad guys don't know she's in the house because she is able to hide when they break in. However, while the family engages in singing Christmas carols around the piano (they're not going to let men with guns spoil their Christmas, remember?) she sits up on the second floor landing and listens with tears running down her face. When her former boyfriend is brought into the house, injured with a concussion, she sneaks down the stairs to talk to him when everybody is out of the room. She moons around over his adopting a life of crime and sulks about it. She could have left when the family was singing Christmas carols as that would have covered up the noise but she was too busy crying on the landing. There were several other opportunities for her to leave, but she didn't avail herself of them-- the excuse being that it would be too dangerous for her to go out in the blizzard, and there was nowhere nearby she could go for help. Wuss! Then, while the family is having a cozy game of Trivial Pursuit, Kat decides to make a break for it. The head bad guy hears a suspicious noise outside, sends the Joe Pesci character and LoverBoy out to see what is going on and LoverBoy catches her and brings her into the house.

Now Kat has managed to get a text message out to the local sheriff's department, but it is Christmas Eve, remember, and only two officers are on duty. One is a crusty, female sergeant with just a couple of years to retirement, and the other is a fresh-faced rookie. They case out the joint and sneak into the house, preparatory to doing... something. They don't know what they are going to do yet. They don't bother to notify anybody else about the text message and go in without back up.

Despite the book's predictability and hokiness, I enjoyed it. Sometimes it's fun to read a feel-good book, even if you know how it's going to end. This is one of those times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is more than just your average holiday romance novel. It's filled with dark suspense that had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The characters are complex, the plot is intricate, and the setting (a family business) adds depth and interest. Excellent!

2-0 out of 5 stars An OK Story !
I was really wanting to read a Christmas story. Aside from the fact that there is some snow on the ground and a wonderful house in Connecticut,it wasn't much of a holiday read. An OK story however, especially if you believe in reincarnation. Not one of my favorites, but I would venture into another Graham novel if it came highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy at times, but succulent nonetheless.
I have to say that I loved this book. I found it at a library book sale, and started it with unease. Within the first few pages, I was hooked.

I'm not really sure what it is about this book that's so great, but it is. It's a great romance, one of those meant-to-be stories that are so appealing. Especially since the characters seem to be fighting their feelings for the majority of the book! In addition, it's a delightful mystery. I have to say that this is THE FIRST mystery book I've ever read where I've suspected the culprit before he/she was revealed. That may not say much about the author's craft, but I loved it. For...us more gullible readers out there.

All in all, I would definetely say that this is a wonderful book. I read it twice in one day-once you pick it up, there's no puting it back!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Holiday Story!
This was a good holiday story and really should not be missed by fans of Heather Graham. This story really has it all.Past lives, Ghost, Intrigue, and Romance.

The characters are likeable and the book was well plotted.Although this book is not as great as some of Ms. Graham's past books it is still worth picking up and reading. It is really good at putting you in the holiday spirit, although it would make for a great read regardless of the time of year.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this book.
This is one of the worst "romance" novels I have read in a long, long time. The characters are not likable or realistic and the story is plodding and boring. ... Read more

Product Description
The war was over . . .

But Shannon McCahy and Malachi Slater, embittered by the conflict, still fought a raging battle of wills all their own. A Yankee whose only solace was the land she had struggled to save, Shannon hated the hot-tempered Malachi, a Rebel on the run who stood for all she had come to despise.

Yet as jayhawkers and bushwhackers descended upon the lawless Missouri border, the two joined forces in a desperate search for their endangered loved ones. They clashed relentlessly, but as time ran out they were forced to realize there was something between them far stronger than hatred . . . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars #2 of the SLATER BROTHERS TRILOGY -
I have to laugh at the attitudes of these two - Malachi Slater and Shannon McCahy.
It took them a long time to realize that it was them fighting their hormones instead of true hate of one another. They both felt the attraction from the start. But, of course, Shannon had to mouth off at almost every encounter. She was very nieve about the attraction and Malachi was only used to sex without love.

Cole had taken off when Malachi shows up at the ranch but Shannon doesn't know at first that it is him and not some maurader.
Then the ranch was invaded by a group of men from Kansas who grabbed Kristin. And, of course, Shannon blows up and wants to charge the 20 some men who have her sister.Malachi starts by having to save her from her own foolish actions. She could have gotten him killed.

Shannon is bound and determined to follow Malachi in the rescue of her sister.Yeah! right! Way out on the trail she once again gets caught and leads Malachi in the opposite direction where Justin Waller lays claim to her.He is determined to have her any way it takes. The more brutul the beter.

Captain Malachi Slater rescues her [again] and of course it leads to seduction [or sex if you will] and finally they make it to the town of Haywood.
Where Malachi meets up with Iris Andre, a former lover, who offers to get word of Kristin for Malachi.Of course, Shannon is up to her old tricks, of mouthing off before she even knows what is going on.

Mr. and Mrs Haywood, practically own most of this town and they decide, from what they could see, that Malachi and Shannon should get married.
Oh boy, more trouble. A saloon girl gets murdered. One thing leads to another and suddenly Shannon gets abducted [again] in her nightgown.

Malachi gets sidetracked again. Dumb female!
Matthew shows up and so does Jamie. They all converge on Fitz's town and plan to hold up a train.Well, she does it again, Shannon and Iris get caught for Fitz when Bear recognizes Shannon. Fitz is determined to kill Cole and his brothers then the women.

See what the train hold-up leads to - and how the Slater families get together, leaving Iris and Matthew back at the ranch. And the Slaters heading for Texas.
Great plot - dumb, emotional female - libertine men - and nasty villians.
Excellent read.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- M -- moral attitudes out the window.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slater Brothers Lasaga continue...Malachi & Shannon's story
The sequel to Dark Stranger - the story continues. Shannon McCahy (a yankee supporter) and Malachi Slater (a rebel soldier) pull together to look for Shannon's sister Kristin Slater, Malachi's sister-in-law, who has been kidnapped in hopes to draw her husband cole Slater out. The Civil War is over but the Slater brothers have been put on the Wanted List as murderers due to Cole Slater gunning down the man bushwacker that murdered his first wife and left Cole for dead. In Dark Stranger (the story of Kristin McCahy and Cole Slater) Shannon and Malachi couldn't be in the same room together without breaking into arguments- they hated each other that much or so it seemed. How are they going to be able to cooperate and work together to find Kristin and get word to Cole to stay put? They say the line between Love and Hate is very thin. Malachi spends as much or more time getting Shannon out of trouble because of her loud mouth and hot-temper. But when there's a threat of losing Shannon to bushwhackers Malachi realizes that he has crossed over from hate to love. All 3 brothers come together to save Kristin. It is great seeing them all together again. The characters are all powerful. It's a good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book...
As the sequel to "Dark Stranger," I eagerly picked up this book.In my opinion, it was much better than the first. The heroine, Shannon, acted accordingly in response to events from the first book, including the horrible death of her fiance by bushwhackers. She had alot to overcome to believe in love again.Between the two books, you see her growth into a woman.Malachi, the hero, was just that in my mind--a hero.Although he was stuck into a situation by Shannon's doing, he still protected her always.

4-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read!
The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the title.I thought it was a very catchy title standing out among all the other books on the shelf.I haven't read too many books that take place during or after the Civil War, but I was really impressed with this book. The characters were wonderful and fit well together, although I thought Shannon was a bit too agressive when facing enemies. And aside from Malachi having to rescue her over and over again and giving the reader the feeling that you were reading the same thing over again, it was an entertaining book.I read it in one day. It's definitely worth reading if you're a romance buff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Night of the Wolves
Heather Graham is one of my favorite authors. She keeps you spellbound until the very end.

I have read many of her books and look forward to new ones.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the full howl
Although I found the book rather enjoyable, I cannot say that I was whole heartedly impressed. The characters were not as well developed as they could have been, and it was difficult to get a real feel for either one of them. There was no real relationship development, which kept me from giving it the four or five stars.Yet, Graham did a good job with the setting, and I appreciated her historical references. Also, unless Graham intends to write a sequel to the novel there will be a few unanswered questions. However, this is an easy read and is great for a night with a mug of hot chocolate and relaxing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Something Is Missing
Normally I really enjoy books by Heather Graham.
And I did like Night of the Wolves. But like the previous reviewer said, this one almost seems to be thrown together.
The storyline and characters are interesting, but this story could have been so much better than it is.
For me this could have been an awesome read but due to the characters not being more fleshed out, as well a lack of emotion and description it ends up only an Ok read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Entertaining
You can't tell from the description that this is a vampire book.I do not like vampire books, so I was prepared to be disappointed. However, this book offered an interesting twist on the vampire theme:vampires in the old west. The 2 main characters, Alex and Cody, are surprisingly real and interesting.I ended up surprising myself and enjoying this book very much.If you don't like vampire books, you might give this one a try - it is not the typical vampire story. If you do like vampire books, you'll probably like this one, too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I love Heather Graham, don't get me wrong but for what the book cost I expected a whole lot more. Very boring and predictable. It was almost like something thrown together for a quick sale until her better books are available.
Don't waste your money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like cruel heroes....
If you do not mind a cruel hero, you will love this book.Of course, the heroine is not much better. However, the story was well-written and I can understand some of the conflict. But the hero can be downright nasty sometimes, and I found myself wondering how Erin could ever have fallen in love with him, with all his nastiness. Not to mention that he is physically violent also. But he is a Viking, and that was their way.The ending was wonderful, and the book, itself, enjoyable.A little less marital violence and bickering would have made this book a 5 star in my view.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Viking Trilogy -- excellent Viking love stoies!
This is the first in Graham's Viking trilogy (Golden Surrender, The Viking's Woman and Lord of the Wolves).Set in 9th century Ireland (Eire), England and the north coast of France, these are the stories of Prince Olaf of Norway, the first Lord of the Wolves, and his bride, Princess Erin, daughter of the Irish High King, the Ard-Righ of Tara, and their descendants. The men are strong willed, arrogant and domineering Vikings, even if the last two are half Irish.Their loves are independent, stubborn and courageous women who can fight with the best of the men and have no intention of allowing a Viking male to dominate them. But then wolves and the cubs of wolves mate for life or so says the druid who is advisor to the Irish king's family. Each of the marriages is arranged over the objection of the females who fight the husband who has laid claim to their lands and to them. This first story of Olaf and Erin is a good one and tells us much of what the Norsemen contributed to Ireland's history. For in conquering they also came to give to the land and to give of themselves.Olaf came in his dragon ship not only to conquer but to build a kingdom and to stay.He welcomes the Irish king's truce sealed by his daughter's hand even if he has no desire for the Irish wench.Erin, who has met the Wolf before and hates him, feels betrayed by the father she loves.Though the marriage begins on very bad terms, love does change things in the end.Graham's writing is, as always, very well done with superb historical references woven into a love story that befits the cultures of the hero and heroine. The sexual tension is high and the love between Olaf and Erin believable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the very best book!
I only wish this book was in hardcover. It is one of my favorites. If you like vikings you will love this series. Even though I do not like paperback books, this one is a "keeper"!

2-0 out of 5 stars Where is the love?
Well, I have nobody to blame but myself for reading this drivel. I wanted to rekindle my teenage love for Viking bodice-rippers and "Golden Surrender" seemed like an excellent book to fit the requirements. Too bad at some point I wanted to throw this book across the room or even worse - burn it.

Let me make it clear, my expectations for such literature are not very high, I know how this kind of stories are done: hero and heroine hate each from the get-go, for one reason or another they are forced to get married, swiftly they fall in love mainly via lots of flirting, fighting and foreplay, a virgin heroine's maidenhead is ravished (in a most glorious and satisfying manner, naturally), followed by numerous instances of passionate copulating, then some misunderstanding occurs that draws our love birds apart, but everything culminates in HEA after the difficulties are resolved and a child is born. What I do not expect from historical bodice-rippers, however, is for heroine to be madly in love with her husband after she is physically assaulted by him and the main character does just that in "Golden Surrender." But let me start from the beginning.

Olaf of Norway is a golden-haired Viking Lord whose ambition is to conquer Ireland and to become its wise and noble ruler. Erin is a beautiful, proud and strong green-eyed Irish princess who, after witnessing Olaf's army ravage an Irish village, cause the deaths of her aunt and uncle and viciously rape her friend, vows to kill the Norwegian Lord. To her horror, about 100 pages into the story, Erin's father pledges her hand in marriage to Olaf, her mortal enemy. The Irish princess is drugged to get through the wedding ceremony and finally comes back to her senses in their bedroom. Erin plans to kill her new husband with a pair of scissors, but is stopped by Olaf, who punishes her not by savagely taking her virginal body (as Erin fears), but by tying her hands to the bed at night. The bride is full of fear and hate for her new husband, but it doesn't stop her from admiring his body and quivering from desire for it as he dangles his family jewels in front of her face while tying her up. And that manly smell! Erin can hardly control her passion after getting a whiff of his scent, a sight of his chest hair and being repeatedly called a bitch!

As the time goes by, Erin is getting used to her role as a Viking Lord's wife, her husband comes to like her, but doesn't attempt to earn her love, rather, he taunts her by making her scrub his back or massage his body, always remembering to give her a good view of his... shaft. Of course, Erin is very close to the ecstasy at the sight of it. The things start to finally move along when one fateful morning, during an argument, Olaf slaps Erin's face for mentioning his dead lover's name. Erin is furious, but not for too long, this very night their marriage is finally consummated, as Olaf is so darn irresistible and has such a great skill with working bath soap and massage oil (page 200). The union is passionate and satisfactory to both, but Erin ends the night by crying and giving her husband a cold shoulder. But fear not, next morning things are different. The Irish princess finds herself almost in love with her enemy/spouse. She is now a toe-sucking vixen as well. Oh, what a difference can one night of Viking loving can make!

Their marital bliss is very short-lived however. The same day Olaf is called upon to protect his lands and is forced to leave his wife alone for almost 3 months. THE misunderstanding occurs when Olaf is on the way from the campaign. Not to go into much detail, Erin is accused of attempting to kill her husband, when in fact her intention is to protect him. Olaf doesn't care to hear her explanations and punishes her immediately by putting shackles on her and dragging her behind his horse. And this is where "Golden Surrender" takes a nose dive IMO. Erin is not only seriously hurt, she is pregnant, as well as innocent in the crime. But Olaf doesn't care, he is never apologetic, and Erin, in spite of her vow never to forget this assault, quivers in desire for her husband the next morning.

I say, give me a break! I sure don't expect a masterpiece reading a book named "Golden Surrender," but is it too much to ask for characters in a bodice-ripper to be marginally likable and make sense? Erin in this book is weak and almost a doormat, she never shows any strength of character, and even more, she seems to have a borderline personality disorder, she hates Olaf one minute and loves him the next. (The only other character I've encountered who acts in the same way is Nora from a widely popular YA novel "Hush, Hush.") And Olaf, well, he is good with massage oil, but otherwise is a jerk.

I personally prefer my historical bodice-rippers with a little more sense, chemistry between the hero and heroine and some humor. "Golden Surrender" is just a sad, dull story which relies heavily on forced (is that the right term?) seduction. 2 stars for smut.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Viking Romance Story
What a wonderful story. I read this book years ago when it first came out. Reading it this time was like I was reading it for the first time.Great characters, emotion, and detail. The alpha male was strong yet emotional. The fighting scenes were detailed and made the reader feel like they were right there.A great read! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dull and average!
Good book, cute not really memorable. However maybe I have this opinion simply because I am not a HUGE baseball fan. There is a LOT of baseball talk and Babe Ruth in it, and I really don't care to go that in depth with baseball.

On the other hand, the storyline was good, just cute and you can guess what is going to happen so that bums me out a little when I read.

It didn't really even seem like Christmas, maybe because it took place in Florida I don't really know but I wouldn't classify it as a good book to get you in the mood for Christmas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ghastly
No matter how reasonably priced this book is, don't buy it; it is ghastly. I thought it might be fun to read a Christmas romance and so decided on this one.The writing was terrible, the story dull, and as a plot devicethe ghost of Babe Ruth is brought back to help a young boy make his littleleague team.Dreadful! ...
